THREE STORY APARTMENT PROJECT IN EAST LAKEWOOD APPROVED By Rico Dizon The Lakewood City Council has approved an amendment to the city’s general plan to give way to the development and construction of a three-story apartment building at the corner of Bloomfield Avenue and Centralia Street. The long vacated half an acre property used to be a gas station. It was purchased in 1997 by Casa Madrid, owner of several apartment dwellings in Long Angeles and Orange County. The property remained vacant until recently when the new owner conveyed his plan to develop the 21, 780 sq. ft. lot and build a three-storey building that will house 22 apartment units. Sources inside the Central Basin Municipal Water District are telling Hews Media Group-Community Newspaper that outspoken Director Leticia Vasquez leaked privileged informaLeticia Vasquez tion to a local radio reporter regarding the ongoing criminal investigation into the now infamous “slush fund.” At least three sources that work inside the Commerce-based water utility told HMG-CN on the condition of anonymity that Vasquez allegedly provided billing invoices from the law firm Arent Fox to CBMWD regarding the law firm’s participation in the investigation into the $2.75 million fund. This newspaper was the first to report the existence of the fund several months

ago. According to the sources, the only people at CBMWD who possessed the billing invoices were Vasquez and Arent Fox Attorney Michael Zweiback. Zweiback and Arent Fox is representing CBMWD in the fund investigation. The sources said that any documents officially released to a media outlet would have the invoice explanations redacted or “blacked out.” Other details would be also be blacked out due to attorney-client privilege. In a request made months ago, HMGCN received all billings from Sedgwick in relation to the slush fund consisting of hundreds of pages. All explanations were redacted, with only the amount of billing showing. “The only information you could read from the invoice should have been Arent Fox and the amount billed,” said the source. HMG-CN has been told that Vasquez

After surveying more than 500 likely voters in the NLMUSD area, the district found that 64 percent would support a bond measure in the November 2014 election for classroom repairs and improved instructional facilities. Local Real Estate Values How's the Market? The tide has turned and it is now in favor of the seller! Low interest rates coupled with low inventory creates a winning environment for those wanting to sell their home today. The driving force of sales, simply put is---supply and demand. The City of Whittier remains a highly desirable location for mid to high income earners, thus maintaining a consistent level of consumer demand. What does this mean for Whittier sellers? It means that there are multiple buyers interested in placing an offer on your property. Multiple offers create the potential to sell your home "above" fair market value. 2012 2013 Current Month Change from Last COMMERCE, CA Year Average Sales Price* $218,042 $272,370 $297,512 9.23% Avg # Days on Market* 89 49 38 -22% 2012 2013 Current Month Change from Last NORWALK, CA Year Average Sales Price* $262,418 $310,888 $324,122 4.26% Avg # Days on Market* 77 52 52 0% 2012 2013 Current Month Change from Last LA MIRADA, CA Year Average Sales Price* $362,851 $414,546 $430,329 3.81% Avg # Days on Market* 81 47 48 2% 2012 2013 Current Month Change from Last CERRITOS, CA Year Average Sales Price* $489,330 $549,096 $582,560 6.09% Avg # Days on Market* 83 52 48 -8% 2012 2013 Current Month Change from Last ARTESIA, CA Year Average Sales Price* $297,135 $359,678 $365,098 1.51% Avg # Days on Market* 78 49 39 -20% 2012 2013 Current Month Change from Last BELLFLOWER, CA Year Average Sales Price* $287,002 $331,349 $399,514 20.57% Avg # Days on Market* 84 59 61 3% 2012 2013 Current Month Change from Last HAWAIIAN GARDENS, CA Year Average Sales Price* $165,800 $226,361 $302,625 33.69% Avg # Days on Market* 92 30 61 103% 2012 2013 Current Month Change from Last SANTA FE SPRINGS, CA Year Average Sales Price* $321,522 $362,246 $324,365 -10.46% Avg # Days on Market* 81 60 56 -7% 2012 2013 Current Month Change from Last DOWNEY, CA Year Average Sales Price* $360,351 $403,020 $433,249 7.50% Avg # Days on Market* 79 56 47 -16% 2012 2013 Current Month Change from Last LAKEWOOD, CA Year Average Sales Price* $352,194 $415,584 $426,943 2.73% Avg # Days on Market* 77 47 51 9% 2012 2013 Current Month Change from Last LA PALMA, CA Year Average Sales Price* $472,960 $549,875 $570,000 3.66% Avg # Days on Market* 85 64 90 41% 2012 2013 Current Month Change from Last WHITTIER Year Average Sales Price* $324,773 $387,820 $403,600 4.07% Avg # Days on Market* 81 54 68 26% 30yr Fixed Mortgage*** 3.35 4.46% 1.11%

There were two events held separately for the students and provided the children with special needs to participate. Christine Balbuena, the principal of the school told Hews Media GroupCommunity Newspapers at the event, “We appreciate the support from all the sponsors who donated and really appreciate the community coming together for this event.” Raffle prizes included Dr. Dre Beats Headphones, JBL Audio products, school backpacks, and gift certificates from local eatery Frantone’s Pizza. Chamber officials said that “given the serious assertions of the lawsuit and upon advice of the chamber’s attorney, we will have no comment on this issue at this time. Former Controversy In 2012 a public comment from Mexicoborn Huntington Park City Councilwoman Rosa Perez sparked a media frenzy after she blamed “the Americans” who served as past elected officials for problems with residential and business water meters. Perez, who was elected in 2011, stunned the mostly Spanish speaking audience in attendance at Huntington Park City Hall when the comment was made. At the time, Perez said “I wanted to come into (elected) office, and to see what the problems are in the city and try to bring solutions to them. A big problem is that people think that when the Americans were in office everything was all great and when the Latinos came in, then all the problems came in.” During her past rant, Perez continued in Spanish by claiming, “but the Americans did a lot of these contracts that are costing us (Latinos) much money.” Several residents immediately reacted with loud yells in protest to the comments.

Central Basin Director Vasquez Manipulates Local Radio Reporter By Brian Hews There is a reason we are given two ears and one mouth, it’s better to listen and understand first, then talk. Central Basin Municipal Water District Director Brian Hews Leticia Vasquez has Publisher been reaching out to several members of the media during the past several months in hopes of landing a sympathetic ear. She apparently has found one in a well-known public television and radio investigative journalist. Despite her campaign being funded by a convicted felon, voting to fire people who found the infamous slush fund, and despite facing legal challenges including being under criminal investigation by the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office of Public Integrity, Vasquez has

This latest story is very disturbing. Ms. Vasquez seems to have no ethical boundaries. It is growing more evident with each passing day that this young lady is unfit to serve in an elected capacity. Obviously the lessons learned in Lynwood by Ms. Vasquez have become a distant memory. After a year of reading about the various exploits of Ms. Vasquez and her two equally unethical colleagues Roybal and Apodaca, one has to question why the appropriate authorities haven’t taken necessary action? There appears to be a complete collapse within the District Attorney’s office under the guidance of Ms. Lacey. Mr. Cooley displayed an iron fortitude when it came to public corruption that Ms. Lacey perhaps fears she is incapable of replicating? This newspaper has amased a wealth of investigative research which should provide the basis for a comprehensive investigation. Ms. Vasquez should do the right thing and resign to spare herself the embarrass-

found a friend in KPCC Public Radio investigative reporter Karen Foshay. Foshay and KPCC entered the CBMWD saga back in May 2013, five months after Hews Media Group-Community News wrote its first article on the current crisis at the embattled water agency. Foshay is a smart reporter, one of the most respected in Southern California, winning several awards for her work in the past. But she is using her mouth and not listening with her ears. HMG-CN had written nine articles, most about Vasquez, Roybal, and Apodaca before May. Foshay, realizing what a story CBMWD has become, suddenly joined the fray in May. Sources inside the water agency are saying that Vasquez is now manipulating Foshay for her own personal gain. Based on what Vasquez told her, Foshay published a slush fund article in December 2013 that portrayed Vasquez as a hero and a savior to CBMWD. Vasquez never told Foshay the truth about a whistleblower lawsuit she had filed way back in August of last year against the very agency she was elected to represent trying to cash-in on millions while using insider information to file the lawsuit. And Foshay did not seem to want to hear that from anyone, including HMGCN. Sources inside CBMWD are tell-

ment of either another recall or worse, her prosecution for public corruption. Those served by the Central Basin deserve better. Wayne Carter Sr. Money money money! None of these phony’s have any shame. They lie about wanting to serve the public when in fact, all they want to do is screw the hard working tax payer by stealing as much money, goods and services as they can. I wish the evil Queen Leticia would work as hard at her job at the water district, as she does scheming to fleece the tax payer. And being a lackey for that Teachers Jail inmate King Roybal and his Homie Apodaca. Karma is coming for you thieves and scoundrels. Just ask former Bell crook Rizzo and his Homie Spaccia. Can’t wait for Leticia’s lawsuit to hit the courts. I’m gonna have a front row seat! Lee Irvin Re: Cashing In Pacifica also pulled the same stuff in Pico Rivera with the local school district. El Rancho Unified was also fleeced by Pacifica for millions in bond work that resulted in very little progress. Ernie Camacho had Joe Rivera in his hip pocket, ala

ing HMG-CN that those involved in the investigation of the lawsuit, the FBI and Arent Fox who represents CBMWD in the investigation, were “extremely angry at Foshay for the December article. Some are even saying that the current massive criminal investigation could have been compromised when the journalist wrote and published a story on the fund that and used Vasquez as a source. Then Foshay wrote another online article about the massive legal fees in relation to the slush fund. Again it showed manipulation by Vasquez. Vasquez leaked privileged documents to Foshay, documents that should have been redacted, in which Foshay published the contents. The story on page 1 outlines what Vasquez did. Again, high-level sources and Arent Fox were extremely angry and indicated they will refer this leak to the LA District Attorney’s office for prosecution on obstruction of justice against Vasquez. They said the FBI is now very suspect of Arent Fox/CBMWD, where before they were working hand-in-hand with Arent Fox; that is obstruction of justice by Vasquez. What’s worse, now Foshay is ignoring investigating Vasquez, witnessed by a recent Foshay radio show on KPCC where she slammed all players in the fund investigation with the exception of Vasquez. Two ears, one mouth. Roybal, Vasquez and Apodaca. But the only twist there was that Ernie’s brother Andy was the general counsel for El Rancho. That’s right, Kunkle and Camacho were the lawyers for the district for many years, working side by side with that other crook, Supt. Norb Genis. Money talks and the rest of us just get the shaft. Any more juice Pacifica stories out there folks? Mike Tyse Another day at Central Basin, another disgrace. Of course the District Attorney “punted on this issue and as I recall, Central Basin’s former Ethics Committee refered Roybal’s abuse to the Los Angeles Civil Granb Jury. So what happened? Nothing of course. So once again our water bills go to pay yet another Central Basin mistake? Nothing against Fuentes, this is all on that guy Roybal. Why is he still President of the board?? Why doesn’t he get delegated to odd man out since he’s such a lame tool? I can’t stand that place anymore. CRIME SUMMARIES Jan. 27-Feb. 2

Cerritos There were 23 Part I felonies reported

La Mirada

Two male juvenile suspects were arrested in La Mirada near Biola University for burglary and booked at Norwalk Sheriff‘s Station on Jan. 30, 2014. At approximately 12:45 p.m., an alert resident reported suspicious persons in a neighbor‘s yard on the 15300 block of Stanton Avenue. Sheriff‘s Deputies swiftly responded and contained the area where the suspects were last seen fleeing on foot. The suspects were ultimately apprehended and taken into custody. Stolen property from the residence was recovered and returned to the owner. The partnership between residents and the La Mirada Public Safety Team was effective in putting a stop to this crime. Without the help of vigilant neighbors willing collaborate with law enforcement, the apprehension of these burglars would have been greatly reduced. Residents are encouraged to continue to partner with the La Mirada Public Safety Team to prevent crime and report suspicious activity. Anyone with information involving crimes is urged to contact the La Mirada Community Sheriff‘s Station at (562) 902-2982. Information can also be provided anonymously by calling Crime Stoppers at 800-222-TIPS (8477); by texting the letters TIPLA plus the crime tip to CRIMES (274637); or by visiting: http:// lacrimestoppers.org.

during this week’s reporting period, which is an increase of two over the 21 reported the previous week. Three robberies were reported, including two shoplifts which escalated into a robberies. A single residential burglary occurred last week, a nice decrease from the six the prior week, although there were four commercial burglaries reported. Vehicle burglaries decreased from eight to six, but grand theft reports increased from two to six. Finally, there were two vehicles reported stolen, which is a slight decline from the three reported the previous week and a nice reduction from the 2014 weekly average of 4.6 stolen vehicles reported in Cerritos. This past week three robberies were investigated by Sheriff’s detectives. On January 29 two women took about $100 in clothing from Babies ‘R’ Us on South Street. The suspects attempted to return bedding items, and when refused by the store manager they took several clothing items and fled the store. The second robbery was a shoplift gone bad which occurred at Walmart when the suspect fought with loss prevention officers in the parking lot. Both suspects are outstanding and being pursued by Cerritos Station detectives. The final occurrence was a street robbery outside of the Wells Fargo Bank on Gridley Road. A convenience store employee was carrying a bag of receipts through the parking lot when he was assaulted and knocked down by a suspect who grabbed the money bag and absconded down the street. The suspect is still outstanding, but fortunately the victim was uninjured. The residential burglary occurred during the overnight hours in the 17000 block of DeGroot Avenue. Unknown suspects took a garage door remote control from an unlocked car in the driveway and accessed the garage. Various athletic items were stolen, some of which were recovered by deputies in the street in front of the residence. Commercial burglaries this past week included the loss of two pitching machines and related items from a storage shed at Valley Christian High School. A second school burglary was reported at Cerritos High School where a kitchen was entered at about 12:30 a.m, last Friday, but nothing apparently taken. Also about midnight last Saturday, someone broke a window at Cerritos Infiniti and stole some car keys. Another window was shattered at a business on Edwards Road in the afternoon last Sunday and it has yet to be determined what might have been taken. No suspects have been arrested and all four of these burglaries remain under investigation. Vehicle burglaries declined by two from the previous week, from eight to six. Four occurred in residential areas and two in commercial parking lots. During the overnight hours between January 24 and 27 someone broke a rear window of a Toyota Avalon on Betty Avenue and took an iPad. About the same time period someone pried open a sliding door of a Chevy van on Cedarcrest Drive and took miscellaneous equipment. On July 29 a window of an SUV was shattered on Palo Verde Avenue, but apparently no property was removed. And during the late afternoon on Judy Way somehow a driver’s door of a Toyota van was unlocked by the

suspect and a cell phone and backpack removed. Two vehicle burglaries were also reported, one at the Los Cerritos Center and one at the retail center on South Street and Palo Verde Avenue. In the late afternoon of January 28 a stereo, a wallet, and about $100 in cash was stolen from an older model Honda Civic parked at the mall. It is unknown how the suspect entered this vehicle. On July 30 at 8 p.m. a suspect shattered a window of another Honda Civic in the retail center on Palo Verde Avenue but did not remove any items. There were six grand thefts reported this past week involving a variety of items. Last Sunday at about 4:45 p.m. a bicycle locked to a shopping cart bin was stolen from the Home Depot center on Alondra Boulevard. The value of the bicycle was reported to be $6,000. Metal valves worth about $20,000 were stolen from the work site where a new residential development is being constructed at Artesia Boulevard and Bloomfield Avenue. A resident on Paseo Granada reported the loss of jewelry from her bedroom and another resident on Benfield Avenue reported the loss of stereo equipment from his unlocked vehicle parked in front of his residence. A scissor lift was also taken from Sunbelt Rentals on South Street. Finally, during the overnight hours of January 29 to 30, a Ford pickup was stolen from a home on Chaparral Avenue. The second vehicle reported stolen, also a pickup truck, was a Chevy taken at the Los Cerritos Center about 4 p.m. on Thursday, January 30. These cases are under investigation by our Sheriff’s detectives, but as with most property crimes, the solve rate is very low because there is usually no evidence available that leads to a suspect. Prevention is far more effective in stopping such crimes, so if you see something suspicious, please say something to our Sheriff’s dispatch center at (562) 860-0044 (or 9-1-1 for a crime in progress).

Nonboard level release of documents via a public records request would require redaction. “Director Vasquez interfered with a criminal investigation that is currently taking place here at CBMWD for her own political gain,” a source inside the agency told HMG-CN. Arent Fox is representing CBMWD in a criminal investigation, leaking these un-redacted documents would be considered obstruction of justice and Vasquez could be liable for criminal prosecution if found guilty.” “We were working closely with the FBI on the investigation, this maneuver impacts the trust between the two organizations and could hinder future cooperation.”

In the online article by KPCC FM Radio earlier this week, Doug Johnson, a government affairs expert and Fellow at Claremont McKenna College’s Rose Institute commented extensively on the contents of the billings, indicating they were not redacted. KPCC reporter Karen Foshay quoted Johnson in her article saying, “the attorney invoices provide a glimpse into what’s happening behind the scenes of the federal investigation. They are spending hours on these calls. Coordinate [ing] witness interviews. Prepared [ing] documents in questioning interview prep sessions. They are even coaching the board members and employees on how to interview when meeting with the US Attorney’s office.” “Vasquez had made herself a ‘confidential source’ for Foshay’s stories, leaking details of the slush fund to promote her own reformer agenda,” said a CBMWD source. “She wants to cash in on her whistleblower complaint against agents, top management and vendors of Central Basin.” HMG-CN has learned that high-ranking officials at CBMWD and at Arent Fox were outraged by the KPCC article and that they are contemplating filing an official inquiry into the matter with Los Angeles County District Attorney Jackie Lacey.

Central Basin Water Board President Roybal to be Removed By Randy Economy Controversial Central Basin Municipal Water District President James Roybal will be removed as President of the five member governing board on Friday during a special meeting that was announced on Wednesday HMG-CN has learned. Roybal has been under intense scrutiny by HMG-CN for the past year with Publisher Brian Hews calling for his resignation in an Editorial several weeks ago. HMG-CN reported that Roybal, who was elected in 2012, had been enrolled in the controversial program known as “Teacher Jail” by his employer the Los Angeles Unified School District. Roybal has yet to publicly comment about his participation in “Teacher Jail” publicly. Roybal is currently under investigation by several agencies including the LAUSD who last week issued a subpoena to Brian Hews, Publisher and Owner of Hews Media Group-Community Newspaper after the publication printed specific documents

and details documenting Roybal's participation in Teacher Jail. Hews confirmed that he has turned over documents to LAUSD Investigators last week regarding in regards to the subpoena request, but would not disclose the contents of their contents. The meeting is slated to begin at 1 p.m. on Friday. Sources also tell HMG-CN that Director Phil Hawkins, a former Assemblyman from Cerritos will be chosen as the new President of the Central Basin Municipal Water Board of Directors to replace Roybal. HMG-CN has also learned that longtime Roybal alley and fellow Director Robert Apodaca is going to support the change of leadership at the besieged agency that is the currently under criminal investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Downey Councilman Guerra Calls For Senator Wright's Resignation Downey Councilman and President of the Independent Cities Association Dn. Mario A. Guerra made the following comments after the recent jury verdict finding Senator Roderick Wright guilty of eight felonies including lying to the voters about his residence in order to hold office. "Senator Wright’s actions and those of elected officials like him are becoming commonplace, rather than the exception. Week after week, we read about a public official who placed their self-interests above those of the people they swore to represent. This most recent verdict merely emphasizes that the wrong people are representing our communities in Sacramento. Throughout my time serving the citizens of Downey I have always supported and implemented additional levels of transparency and accountability in government. For that reason I helped Downey become a Character Counts Community in order to break the cycle of individuals going into business, leading their families and even representing their constituents without character. I cannot emphasize how important it is for all elected officials at all levels to serve their constituents through constant and consistent acts of character – making sure to do what is right when nobody is watching.” Mayor Guerra added, “Once elected I look forward to working with tomorrow’s leaders to ensure that the public we all serve is treated with the utmost respect and that corruption at any level or in any organization is not tolerated. I pledge to bring a different kind of leadership to the 32nd district – leadership through character.”

Liu and her teammates Kirk Pierron, Lorie Wheeler and Sarah Craig, all students from the California Institute of Arts (Cal Arts) put their heads together and came up with a virtual futuristic taxi cab they dubbed the “Time Embassy.” “We took the idea that visitors who would ride in one particular taxi cab in Rome would that the guests on a jour-

A position at Walt Disney Imagineering is often found on surveys of “dream occupations,” and the company uses the Imaginations competition to reach students like Liu and other as a way to reach out to the widest possible job talent pool for its future workforce. “I didn’t fit into the engineering university world, so going to Cal Arts has been a real positive force in achieving my education goals,” Liu said.

The money could also go towards repairing and updating classrooms, removing asbestos and lead paint, and upgrading school security and fire safety. “As a District, it is important for the education and futures of our students to create a robust 21st century learning environment,” said Board President Margarita Rios. “In the next few months, we will continue to reach out to the Norwalk and La Mirada communities to gather information about specific needs within our schools, as well as provide information and answer questions about what a bond measure would mean for our community.” However, following the initial presentation made to the board on December 20, many members raised concerns regarding the ballot language, litigation and transparency with the public. One of the main concerns brought up was over the wording regarding “athletic

facilities”. Daryl Adams was dissatisfied with the ‘generic-ness’ of the phrasing and wanted to be clear that their intentions, among other things, would be to build new athletic fields and a stadium. Legal bond counsel David Casnocha was invited to the January 6 meeting in an attempt to dissuade those concerns and more fully explain the process and options the board has, should they choose to proceed. Casnocha explained that the initial 75word statement has many legal requirements that must be met, leaving ‘only so many words’ for elaborating on specific projects and intentions. “The 75 words should frame the picture,” he said. It is intended to be the “broad guidelines for what the district can spend the money on. ‘Exhibit B’ and the project list will cover all the other details.” The action taken at this weeks meeting means the board will continue its communication with the community regarding the needs and priorities of the district’s schools. These communications will then lead to a ‘wish list’ that will eventually become a part of the proposed bond language and ‘exhibit B’. Action taken at this meeting did not decide on any final numbers, costs or project details.

Norwalk High School seniors and teacher Dean Gray were honored at the Norwalk La Mirada Unified School District board meeting. The class of 2013 chose 12 organizations and successfully raised enough money to give each charity a check for $500. By Kristin Grafft Norwalk High School seniors and teacher Dean Gray were honored at the Norwalk La Mirada Unified School District board meeting on February 3 for their contributions to, “Giving Charity to Charities.” Gray started the program at Norwalk High School last year as a senior project for the graduating class of 2013. Each senior was to conduct thorough research, present their findings to their classmates, and then vote on which charities they would like to support. The class of 2013 chose 12 organizations and successfully raised enough money to give each charity a check for $500. This year, eleven charities were chosen and the class of 2014 managed to raise even more money. On Wednesday, January 15 charity representatives each accepted a $1000 check to go towards their organization. One student representative from each class also gave a speech at the assembly about why that particular charity was chosen. Gray spoke at the meeting on February 3 and said, “I couldn't be prouder of our kids and what they've done this year.” Gray added that, after the assembly, he was approached by one of the Norwalk High School juniors who asked how much money they had raised this year.

Upon hearing they had raised $11,000, she responded, “how about 15 next year for ’15?” “That just shows you where the school is going.” Gray said. The charities chosen for 2014 were the Make-a-Wish Foundation, Toys for Tots, Save the Children, Susan G. Komen, Mercy Ships, RAINN, SPCA-LA, Children's Hospital of Los Angeles, the World Food Program, UC Regents UCLA Stroke Research, and the Elton John AIDS Foundation (EJAF). In an email blast sent out by EJAF development associate Andreas M. Schwarz, he expressed his gratitude for the students of Norwalk High School, “not only for selecting EJAF as a beneficiary of this wonderful project, but also for reminding us that each individual can contribute to the urgent work of building an AIDS-free world,” Schwarz also said, “EJAF often talks about the big impact that small actions can have in the global fight against HIV/ AIDS. Earlier this month, the students at Norwalk High School in Los Angeles County offered us all an inspiring example of everyday individuals taking a stand against the epidemic.”

Norwalk hoopsters pick up important victories, sweep John Glenn By Loren Kopff With two weeks left in the regular season, every game is important for playoff positioning and such was the case when the Norwalk boys basketball team hosted John Glenn this past Monday night. The Lancers were hoping to stay within an arms length of Artesia for fourth place and the final automatic playoff berth out of the Suburban League. The Lancers, known for blowing leads late in the game several times this season, nearly did the same against their cross

town city rivals. But instead, they got a big basket from senior Alex Vidana late in the game and Norwalk escaped with a 53-49 win. Norwalk, which has won two of its past three games, improved to 9-15 overall and 3-6 in the league. The Lancers also avenged a 48-47 loss to Eagles to open up the league schedule. “I told my team at halftime, ‘we’re choking, we’re panicking, we’re not making them panic’,” said Norwalk head coach Jim Webster. “We had plenty of inside shots but we were just throwing the ball around.” Up by one and with the shot clock winding down to one second, Vidana launched a three-pointer from the left wing with 13 seconds left to give Norwalk a 51-47 lead. Glenn junior Daniel Morales would score on an offensive rebound with two seconds left but senior Rashaad Penny iced the game with two free throws. Norwalk held the lead for all but 18 seconds of the first half and led by as many as eight points (twice). However, the Eagles had the numbers on the glass with 19 rebounds in the first half to 14 from the Lancers. Both teams connected on eight field goals in the half, but the Lancers attempted 14 more shots and couldn’t take more of an advantage of Glenn’s 18 turnovers. “That’s how bad we are,” Webster admitted. “That’s pretty much how bad we are. [Glenn] had the hustle and the effort on loose balls and that’s why they outrebounded us.” Glenn (7-16, 1-8) would chip away at the Norwalk lead in the third quarter and took its first lead at the 3:08 mark of

the third quarter on senior Ardale Encabo’s basket. That was followed by a three-pointer from senior Suni Bedi. But Norwalk rallied and eventually took a three-point lead in the opening minutes of the final stanza before relinquishing it again. With 3:36 left in the game, senior Erich Webb scored after getting an offensive board to put Glenn up 45-44. About a half a minute later, senior Antonio Lucero put the Eagles up by three before a steal and basket from Penny began Norwalk’s final push. Norwalk took the lead for good at the 1:53 mark when Vidana scored on an off-balance shot. “We continue to get good shots and miss them,” Webster said. “And against a 3-2 zone, if you’re not going to hit some three’s from the corners or at the high post where we had those shots…and we’re not hustling on defense.” Bedi led the Eagles with 13 points while Webb added a dozen more along with 10 rebounds. Lucero chipped in with eight points and five boards. Norwalk was led by Penny (17 points, 12 rebounds and five steals) while sophomore Omar Tinoco scored a career-high 10 points, five rebounds and two assists. Norwalk hosted La Mirada this past Wednesday one full game behind Artesia for fourth place. Artesia visited John Glenn this past Wednesday. “We’re going to need [Artesia] to lose another game besides the ones they should lose because we lost to Glenn [in the first round],” Webster said. “We’re going to be a game behind if they do what we do. But we pretty much locked up fifth place with this win. [Fourth place] will come down to the last game of the season and if we can get in that position, then we’ll play hard for it. But maybe we can beat Cerritos and put us in a position to really get fourth.” Prior to the game, the Norwalk girls, still looking for consistency throughout an entire 32-minute game, struggled early against last place Glenn. In fact, Glenn had an 11-8 lead late in the opening quarter and still had a three-point lead when sophomore Savanna Aguilar opened the second quarter with a bucket. But the Lady Lancers scored the next 13 points of the stanza and went on to a 47-30 win. Norwalk snapped a threegame losing streak, all by a combined 12 points, and improved to 8-12 overall, 3-6 in league. “I think it was just the careless passing and our decision making and our ability to box-out,” said Norwalk first-year head coach Emily Osongco of the first quarter. “I think our girls are trying to out-jump someone when…Glenn definitely has

height over us. But at the same time, in the second quarter, they got focused and did what we needed them to do.” After Norwalk had an 8-4 lead, the Lady Eagles (3-20, 0-9) scored seven straight points. But with 6:05 left in the half, a three-pointer from junior Jackie Aldana put the hosts in front for good at 14-13. Both teams would pretty much trade baskets in the third quarter but the key stat of the second half was in the rebounding department. After halftime, Norwalk grabbed 11 offensive rebounds and nine on the defensive end while Glenn, which had 18 rebounds in the first half, was limited to 10 in the second half. “I don’t know whether it’s their mindset of how to come out,” Osongso said. “But at the same time I know this team is definitely learning. Our goal is for them to play consistent. They have to understand it starts from the beginning. All of these games have been within reach, even for first place Mayfair. For us to lose by three [to Mayfair], it doesn’t make sense to us.” Aguilar led the Lady Eagles with 11 points and nine rebounds while senior Myra Gomez had eight points and nine boards and senior Mayra Ramirez added seven points, three rebounds and six steals. Junior J’Nae Harrison quietly led Norwalk with a career-high 17 points while Aldana added 11 points and four steals. Junior Monica Pineda also had 10 rebounds, three steals and two assists. “Monica has been in a slump where she has recognized it,” Osongco said. “Our goal is to help her overcome that. She’s harder on herself and I think she’s put that pressure on herself. Monica is definitely a very interesting and exciting player that I’m looking forward to see mature and make better decisions.” Both Norwalk teams, who are off tonight will end the regular season, at Cerritos on Tuesday and home against Artesia on Thursday. The Norwalk girls were a game and a half behind fourth place La Mirada entering this past Wednesday. Both Glenn teams will visit Bellflower tonight and host La Mirada on Tuesday to wrap up the regular season.

returning senior, a couple of juniors and a quartet of freshmen, Gahr has struggled in San Gabriel Valley League play. But the Gladiators put a hurting on visiting Paramount this past Wednesday night and used a 13-0 run late in the first quarter and early into the second quarter as a springboard to a 70-44 win. Gahr improved to 10-13 overall and 2-5 in league as the victory was a huge confidence builder for the remaining three regular season games. “Oh, it definitely is,” said Gahr assistant coach Art Jackson. “No doubt about it. We lost to them in the first round and turn around and beat them by 26 today. That’s the kind of energy we have. The difference is we came out and played the full 32 minutes today. When we were over there, we played 16 and we dug a hole.” Gahr trailed 15-8 but with 2:01 left in the first quarter, a basket from senior Ra’vyn Bowser started the scoring spree that lasted 66 seconds into the second quarter. Gahr would lead 28-24 at the half and had an eight-point advantage late in the third quarter before going on an 11-0 run to put the game out of reach. One of three leaders for the Gladiators

was freshman Miranda Ta’amu, who recorded a career-high 21 points with seven each in the first, third and fourth quarters. Ta’amu also grabbed 14 rebounds, missed three field goals and was nine of 14 from the charity stripe. Ta’amu has now scored in double figures in four of the last five games. “When Miranda figures out how good she can be and she uses that big body of hers, she’s going to put a lot of pain on people,” Jackson said. “And she’s starting to figure it out. She’s only a freshman and she’s going to be good. She’s going to be very good. “Everybody better look out. If you’re going to get us, you better get us now,” he added. “The future is going to be bright for us. We’re not going to stay down for long. It doesn’t work that way. But it was a good win. I’m happy for them.” Bowser led everyone with 25 points and had six rebounds while senior Chidera Agu came off the bench to add 10 points, 11 rebounds and three assists. In addition, Gahr turned the ball over only 10 times in the contest, twice in the first half. Following the game, the Gahr boys also picked up a big win, outlasting the Pi-

rates 85-69 with a barrage of three-pointers. The Gladiators (12-11, 4-3) drained 16 baskets from beyond the arc and like the girls, closed out the first quarter strong which set the tone for the remainder of the game. Paramount was leading 13-11 with 2:48 left in the opening quarter but the hosts went on a 13-0, then senior Malachi Hoosein opened the second quarter with his second of six three-pointers as Gahr led 27-13. The Gladiators maintained a double-digit lead until the Pirates scored the final seven points of the half. But Gahr outscored Paramount 24-13 in the third quarter and would lead by as much as 24 points late in the game. Hoosein led everyone with 26 points, 14 rebounds and six assists while junior Jeremy Carlyle added 16 points and his twin brother, Gregory, pitched in with 13 points. Sophomore Justin Smith came off the bench to pour in a career-high 11 points and also had three assists. Both Gahr teams, headed for the playoffs, will visit Downey tonight before hosting Dominguez on Tuesday and Lynwood on Thursday.

VALLEY CHRISTIAN BOYS BASKETBALL GETS MANHANDLED BY LEAGUE-LEADING VILLAGE CHRISTIAN

“It’s so refreshing to have a dentist that engages and cares like he does. Dr. Urban and his staff go out of their way to make me feel comfortable.

By Loren Kopff

After visiting Dr. Urban’s office, all my dentist fears went away.”

The Valley Christian boys basketball team couldn’t keep visiting Village Christian’s biggest bear in hibernation this past Tuesday night. Bear Henderson pounded out a game-high 24 points to pace Village Christian to an 80-57 win over the host Crusaders. Village Christian opened the game on a 17-0 run as Valley Christian never got its deficit below 14 points the rest of the game. Village Christian, the two-time defending Olympic League champions and 2012 state champions, also received 20 points from Jerrick Ahanmisi and 15 more from Marsalis Johnson. One bright spot for Valley Christian (9-15, 1-5) was sophomore Stedmon Bryant, who scored a career-high 19 points, including five three-pointers. Sophomore Vaj Rice added 12 points and seven rebounds. Valley Christian will host Whittier Christian tonight, then end the regular season at Heritage Christian on Tuesday night. In other boys basketball action, Artesia has won two straight games and has pretty much locked down fourth place in the Suburban League. The Pioneers edged Bellflower 31-28 this past Monday night and defeated John Glenn this past Wednesday night to improve to 16-8 overall, 5-5 in league. Artesia hosts league-leading Mayfair tonight and visits Norwalk on Thursday night.

In other girls basketball action, Cerritos (16-4, 7-1) is still alive for a Suburban League crown and that will most likely be determined on Thursday night when the Lady Dons host Mayfair. The Pioneers then fell to John Glenn 3-2 in overtime this past Wednesday and saw a bid for a fourth-straight league title wash away. The Pioneers (11-7-5, 4-2-4), who trailed 2-0 at the half, got on the board two minutes into the second half when junior midfielder Ari Claro headed in a pass from senior midfielder Kevin Garcia. In other boys soccer action, Valley Christian slammed Village Christian 8-0 this past Tuesday afternoon to improve to 10-7-1 overall and 4-0-1 in the Olympic League. Remembering: Pete’s Plumbing Paul ‘Pete’ Hillis He came into this world kicking and screaming in 1943. According to his mother, she could hear the air raid horns sounding as well. Born July 10th, Paul “Pete” Hillis, Sr. left this world on February 1st, 2014. Born in Wilmington, Delaware, he attended local catholic schools in the area, including Salesianum High School. After high school, he went into the plumbing trade and found his calling in life. He remained in Delaware until he set his sights on California. He eventually settled in Lakewood and after 4 years of working for a local plumbing contractor, he decided to start his own company. Pete’s Plumbing was officially started on July 1, 1972 and was still under his direction (although he was supposed to be “retired“) until his passing. Pete is survived by his wife of 32 years, Patty, and his children, Pete Hillis, Jr. (Carrie), Bud Hillis, Tony Hillis (Janell), Taylor Harer (Dave), and Joshua Hillis, as well as his grandchildren and great-children. He is also survived by his brother, Walter Kruzienski of Aston, Pennsylvania, and nieces and nephews (who always referred to themselves as “his favorite”). And sadly, he was preceded in death by his son, Dwayne Hillis, his mother, Agnes Ciccaglione Kruzienski, his father, Walter Hillis, and his brothers, Buddy Hillis and Donnie Hillis. His larger than life personality leaves a definite void in the lives of the people who knew him. But he will live on through the retelling of his outrageous stories, jokes, and shenanigans. While reading this, those who knew him can close their eyes, picture his smile, and laugh while recalling a shared moment with him that will live in their heart. And, of course, he will be remembered for his passion for life, fierce sense of loyalty and the things he believed in. Funeral arrangements are being handled by White’s Funeral Home, 9903 Flower Avenue, Bellflower, California. A funeral mass celebrating his life will be held Friday, February 7th, 2014 at 1:30 p.m. at Holy Family Catholic Church, 18708 Clarkdale Avenue, Artesia, California.
