CERRITOS AREA RESIDENTS NOT HEEDING CORONAVIRUS WARNINGS
HMG-LCCN EXCLUSIVE
COVERED CALIFORNIA ENROLLMENT DEBACLE WRONGLY CANCELED THOUSANDS OF HEALTH PLANS BY BRIAN HEWS

BY BRIAN HEWS HMG-LCCN dispatched our reporters out to get pictures of "closed parks" and found something very surprising during this time of "stay at home" orders. The playground equipment was closed, with yellow tape preventing people from playing on the equipment, but basketball and volleyball courts remained open, with people playing sports and not physical distancing. According to experts, the coronavirus pandemic is about to explode in the state, and people who might not have any symptoms can be carrying the virus unknowingly passing it on to others. It is why governor Newsom implemented the stay at home order unless you work for an essential service company or must go shopping for food. Over 40 million Californians are grappling with the stay at home order. “We need to bend the curve in the state of California,” Gov. Gavin Newsom said during a news conference. “There’s a social contract here. People, I think, recognize the need to do more. They will adjust and adapt as they have.” As of March 22, 2020, 2 p.m. Pacific Daylight Time, there are a total of 1,733 positive cases and 27 deaths in California (including one non-California resident).

A glitch in the auto-enrollment system for Covered California, the massive state-run system that offers health plans and financial assistance if enrollees qualify, unnecessarily canceled "thousands of health policies" placing tens of thousands of California families in the position of not having health care, Hews Media Group-Los Cerritos Community News has learned. The cancellations came at a particularly bad time given the coronavirus pandemic. HMG-LCCN talked to several fami-

USNS MERCY COMING TO THE PORT OF LA BY TAMMYE MCDUFF On Sunday March 22nd, it was announced that the USNS Mercy is on its way to the port of Los Angeles to provide 1,000 needed hospital beds. The Humanitarian Assistance mission of the USNS Mercy is a key pillar of the Surface Navy. This is an opportunity for Los Angeles residents to experience firsthand the critical role of the US Navy. For the past four years, Emergency Response personnel at all levels of government have participated in a program during LA Fleet Week to plan for a major disaster like the one we are facing now. Personnel have an opportunity to forge relationships and learn how to work together in a time of crisis. To-
day, we have an opportunity to benefit from these programs to help us through this crisis. USNS Mercy departed from Naval Station San Diego on Monday, March 23. Over 800 Navy medical personnel and support staff, and more than 70 civil service mariners will be aboard the ship. The ship will serve as a referral hospital for non-COVID-19 patients currently admitted to shore-based hospitals, and will provide a full spectrum of medical care to include critical and urgent care for adults. Mercy's support will allow local hospitals to focus on treating COVID-19 patients with their intensive

In an incident that only can only be called extremely strange, HMG-LCCN learned on Wednesday that Central Basin Municipal Water employees, who are on the side of the purveyors, Director Bob Apodaca and Asm. Cristina Garcia appointed Directors John Oskoui and Dan Arrighi, called the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Deputies and told the sheriffs to remove current CB President Leticia Vasquez. Six deputy patrol cars answered the call and created chaos when they all parked in front of the building located on Telegraph Rd. in Commerce. In humiliating fashion, Vasquez was taken by the deputies and forced into the back of a patrol vehicle, sitting there for over 30 minutes. When the sheriff’s finally sorted things out, they found out that the reason the employees called them was to prevent Vasquez from obtaining expense

The stimulus package was passed and many are wondering when the money is coming. Trump and Treasury Secretary Mnuchin said the money would be out by early April, but most experts are saying early May. How large would the payments be? Most adults would get $1,200, although some would get less. For every child age 16 or under, the payment would be an additional $500. How many payments would there be? Just one. Future bills could order up additional payments, though. How do I know if I will get the full amount? It depends on your income. Single adults with Social Security numbers who have an adjusted gross income of $75,000 or less would get the full amount. Married couples with no children earning $150,000 or less would receive a total of $2,400. And someone filing as head of household would get the full payment if they earn $112,500 or less. Above those income figures, the payment decreases until it stops altogether for single people earning $99,000 or married people earning $198,000. In any given family and in most instances, everyone must have a valid Social Security number. There is an exception for members of the military. You can find your adjusted gross income on line 8b of the 2019 1040 federal tax return. What year’s income should I be looking at? 2019. If you haven’t prepared a tax return yet, you can use your 2018 return. If you haven’t filed that yet, you can use a 2019 Social Security statement showing your income. What if my recent income made me
ineligible, but I anticipate being eligible because of a loss of income in 2020? Do I get a payment? The bill does not appear to help people in that circumstance, but there are many other provisions in the legislation. You may be able to file for unemployment or for one of the new loans for small business owners or sole proprietors. Would I have to apply to receive a payment? No. If the Internal Revenue Service already has your bank account information, it would transfer the money to you via direct deposit based on the recent income-tax figures it already has. When would they arrive? Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said that he expected most people to get their payments within three weeks. If my payment doesn’t come soon, how can I be sure that it wasn’t misdirected? According to the bill, you would get a paper notice in the mail no later than a few weeks after your payment has been disbursed. That notice would contain information about where the payment ended up and in what form it was made. What if I haven’t filed tax returns recently, would that affect my ability to receive a payment? It could. File a return immediately, at least for 2018, according to the I.R.S. website. “Those without 2018 tax filings on record could potentially affect mailings of stimulus checks,” the site says. Would most people who are receiving Social Security retirement and disability payments each month also get a stimulus payment? Yes. Would eligible unemployed people get these stimulus payments? Veterans? Yes and yes.

SAFELY ORDER TAKEOUT DURING CORONAVIRUS
Officials at the FDA say there's no known risk that COVID-19 transmits through food, but experts clarify how you can still make delivery much safer. Whether you're already practicing social distancing or have put yourself into self-quarantine due to the outbreak, it's clear that you should have groceries and other essentials delivered to you if possible. But with experts sharing in a new article published in The New England Journal of Medicine that the virus that causes COVID-19 can live on surfaces anywhere from hours to multiple days, is eating food that we haven't prepared is actually safe. The short (and good!) answer: Yes. With many non-essential businesses closed, many restaurants have transitioned to delivery only. According to experts, eating your favorite meals in the comfort of your own home shouldn't put you at an elevated risk. Currently, experts at the FDA say there is no hard evidence "to support the transmission of COVID-19 associated with food or food packaging." While experts continue to discover new facts about the coronavirus, the FDA maintains that there's little scientific proof to suggest that people have been getting sick after eating a meal. Rather, most of the reported cases have been traced back to more direct exposure between humans. The FDA stated, "foodborne exposure to this virus is not known to be a route of transmission." Donald Schaffner, Ph.D., a food science extension specialist and a professor at Rutgers University's School of Environmental and Biological Sciences, confirms that experts such as himself aren't aware of any evidence suggesting the disease can be spread through eating contaminated food. "The overwhelming risk comes from being in close proximity to an infected person, especially if they sneeze or cough," he explains. This is why it's super important to wash your hands before handling any food, regardless if it came from a restaurant or your own kitchen — there's more plausibility that you could contaminate your meal with germs that weren't even in the kitchen to begin with. Here's what you can do to make sure your deliveries are as safe as possible, from advice published by the CDC as well as the FDA. It's best to avoid direct contact with delivery personnel. Many delivery services have already rolled out new features to make the delivery process much safer, with clear options for "contactless" delivery. If you're calling a local restaurant to arrange delivery, ask them up front to keep your delivery contactless if possible, simply allowing the courier to leave your meal on your doorstep. You can leave a tip for service within your delivery app, or place some cash in an envelope. The bag the food is delivered in should be your concern, since the coronavirus can reportedly survive for 24 hours on paper or cardboard, as well as 72 hours on plastic. Here's what you can do to minimize the risk of coming into contact with germs:
Place the delivery bag in your sink. Don't let it sit directly on other counter spaces in your kitchen or in the home. You can sanitize or disinfect your sink after the meal is over, and after you've thrown the delivery bag into the trash. Plate your food, or transfer it to another clean container in your kitchen. Be sure to avoid touching the food directly; use a clean utensil instead. Don't put any plastic, paper, or cardboard containers in your cupboard or your fridge, as it's unclear if cold temperatures can neutralize the virus currently. Wash your hands! You'll need to wash your hands for at least 20 seconds before you sit down to eat your meal. At some point, you should also wipe down your sink with a disinfecting wipe. A note on dishes that are served raw or at room temperature: Schaffner says he is not worried about the role that temperature plays when it comes to ordering food. "There is no data on the effect of heating or cooking on virus survival," he says. "We do have data from the related SARS-CoV-1 virus, which shows the virus is as easily inactivated as many other food borne pathogens." He also adds that many restaurants are already taking steps to keep their food from causing any other health issues, including Salmonella poisoning or E. coli exposure, and that you shouldn't solely order (or not order) items based on how they were cooked. Tips for picking food up at a takeout window or drive-thru: Businesses are trying their best to keep the need for human interaction at a minimum, so you shouldn't worry too much about quickly grabbing a packed meal. Schaffner again stresses taking a few precautions to minimizing your direct contact with the packaging itself. Try to maintain as much distance as you can between yourself and anyone else. This includes the personnel working the takeout window, or any customers waiting in line. Experts at Johns Hopkins University suggest a distance of at least six feet if possible to best reduce any risk of COVID19 transmission. Wear gloves. Since you won't be able to wash your hands immediately, wearing gloves is a good way to avoid touching contaminated surfaces while you are outside. If you are in a car, placing your order on the floor (or a surface that no one will directly touch) is best. If you're not equipped with gloves, you can use hand sanitizer to hold you over until you reach a sink. Use contactless payment if possible. Some debit or credit cards come equipped with capabilities that make it easy to "tap" to pay at a terminal, and services like Apple Pay or Google Pay allow you to simply wave your phone to pay your bill. This allows you to avoid having to hand over a physical credit or debit card, which is susceptible to germs. If you have exact cash, lay it on the takeout counter or pass it in a manner that allows you to avoid touching hands directly. Wash your hands! Do this when you get home, and follow the same set of instructions about properly disposing of takeout materials. It's tedious, yes, but it's these kinds of measured extra steps that will help keep your whole family safe.

watch out for coronavirus scams The LASD has seen an uptick in fake emails, texts and phishing scams related to the COVID-19 emergency. They are warning the public not to click on unknown links that appear in your cellphone texts or in emails and instead go directly to trusted sites by typing in the website address yourself. Here are some of the common tactics criminals are using: Fake charities. Scammers play on your good intentions by using names that sound a lot like the names of real charities. Be sure to do your research and donate directly to legitimate charities. Pay safely by credit card, never by gift card or wire transfer. Phishing emails. These emails often appear to be from familiar company names or pretend to be someone you know. Some have been fake emails claiming to be from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) with information on the virus. Others can pretend to be from a government agency, in view of the talk of economic stimulus checks, and will ask for your private information to send you money. Be assured legitimate government agencies will never do that. These emails are all dangerous because they contain links that if clicked on, can install software or other programs that can steal your private information or lock you out of your data. Counterfeit treatments or equipment. Be cautious of anyone selling products that claim to prevent, treat, diagnose or
cure COVID-19. Watch for counterfeit products such as sanitizing products and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), including N95 respirator masks, goggles, full face shields, protective gowns and gloves. More information on unapproved or counterfeit PPE can be found at www. cdc.gov/niosh. Protect your computer and electronic devices by: • Keeping your software up to date and use security software • Regularly backing up your data • Setting your cellphone to update software automatically • Using multi-factor authentication for your accounts Please follow these tips from the FBI to protect yourself: • Never open attachments or click links within emails from senders you don’t recognize. • Never provide your username, password, date of birth, Social Security number, financial data or other personal information in response to an email or robocall. • Always verify the web address of legitimate websites and manually type them into your browser. • Check for misspellings or wrong domains within a link (for example, an address that should end in a “.gov” ends in “.com” instead). Don’t trust the link as typed in the email as it can look correct but will actually link to a fraudulent site. Use your mouse to hover over the link (don’t click). The real link will display so you can check it.

T
he Coronavirus pandemic has curtailed the spring athletic season for area high schools, leaving many to wonder if and when events will be resumed. While no official word has been made as of this past Tuesday from the California Interscholastic Federation, the governing body that oversees all high schools in the state, it still doesn’t look good as school districts have extended the possible return dates when high schoolers could return. Originally, the ABC Unified School District was set to return on Monday but the earliest that students can come back to their respective schools has been extended to May 5. The Norwalk/ La Mirada Unified School District is expected to return on Apr. 17 while no word has been made on Valley Christian High’s return. V.C. had scheduled to be
on Spring Break this upcoming week. The boys volleyball season is scheduled to end on Apr. 29 with softball and baseball seasons the next two days respectively. The other spring sports are to conclude their seasons anywhere from May 1 to May 9 with postseason events running from Apr. 23 (Ojai Tournament for boys tennis) to June 3 (CIF State Championships for boys golf). According to a Mar. 17 media release by the CIF State Office, the CIF has not made any decisions relating to the remainder of the spring sporting events. The state and the 10 Section Commissioners will have a meeting on Apr. 3 where hopefully, a final decision will be made one way or another, the statement said. Meanwhile, here is a recap of the area baseball and softball high school teams as far as how they were doing prior to the suspension/cancellation of their seasons and how many seniors each team has as well as that school’s graduation date. ARTESIA: Graduation is June 10 The baseball team was hoping to notch more than one victory in a season for the first time since 2017 and was halfway there following an 8-0 win in the first game of the season. But the Pioneers lost their next five games, scoring a total of 10 runs and were shutout twice. The last game played was on Mar. 3 and Artesia High would have visited Whitney High today to conclude the first week of 605 League action. There are seven seniors, five of whom are returners, on a team of 20. The softball team began the season with three straight wins but was 5-3 when the schools were shut down. Artesia’s last contest was a 12-0 loss to Edison High on

Mar. 7 in a Santa Fe Tournament game. The Lady Pioneers, who were building of the program’s third winning campaign in the last four seasons, graduate five seniors on a team of 13 and were expected to be one of two teams to vie for a 605 League title this season. The league opener was to be on Mar. 17 at Cerritos High and its next game would have been Tuesday at Oxford Academy. CERRITOS: Graduation is June 9 One of the main stories the past few seasons has been the rise of the Cerritos baseball team and the Dons were on their way to another successful campaign before everything was put on hold. Cerritos was 5-3 following an 8-6 win at Downey High and had won three of five games in the Newport Elks Tournament. The program went 21-8 last season, the program’s best mark in over two decades and has not had a losing record in five straight seasons entering 2020. Cerritos, the defending 605 League champions, which was scheduled to play a doubleheader at Valley Christian High on Mar. 20, would have hosted John Glenn High today. The Dons also had a scheduled home doubleheader with Villa Park High on Apr. 11 and an appearance in the Central Coast Tournament (Apr. 15-18) originally scheduled, among other games. The Dons graduate 15 of 22 players. The softball team, plagued with injuries, snapped a six-game losing streak with a 3-1 win against Norwalk High in its last game played. The Lady Dons were to participate in the Torrance National Tournament the week after the victory before beginning league play and would have hosted Glenn today. Other notable games would have been against La Mirada High and an appearance in the Woodbridge Tournament. Cerritos has not had a losing campaign since 2016 and has finished below .500 seven times in over two decades prior to this season. The Lady Dons graduate four out of a team of 20 players. GAHR: Graduation is June 10 The baseball team was trying shrug off the cobwebs of last season’s 13-16-1 record, the program’s first losing mark since 2008 and was 3-6 prior to a home meeting with Lynwood High on Mar. 10 in its San Gabriel Valley League opener. Gahr High was blanked in its first three games but proceeded to allow 19 runs over the next six games. Still, the Gladiators were seeking their sixth straight league crown and 15th in their last 22 seasons. Gahr was to have played in the National Classic from Apr. 4-9 and had several games left in the El Dorado Steakhouse Tournament, plus a road game at St. John Bosco High, among
others, left to play. Gahr graduates 12 out of a team of 20. The most dominant softball team in the area was off to another stellar start until play was halted. The Lady Gladiators had won all six games they had played, each one by a run, but was ranked sixth in the CIF-Southern Section Division 1 poll. The program has averaged 24 wins the past five seasons and was seeking its seventh straight league title. When games were shut down, Gahr was in the middle of the Torrance National Tournament and was slated to play Suburban League powerhouse La Mirada on Mar. 18. By now, Gahr would have played three of 10 league games. In addition, the Lady Gladiators, with only three seniors on a team of 18 players, was also slated to play in the Michelle Carew Classic from Apr. 1-4. JOHN GLENN: Graduation is June 1 Following six straight winning seasons under former head coach Jack Brooks, five of which resulting in playoff appearances, the baseball program was going through an overhaul with a new coach and a relatively new team The result was a 1-4 start with the lone win coming against Firebaugh High on Feb. 27. The Eagles last played on Mar. 3 and was blanked in two of their four losses. Glenn was to have hosted Norwalk High on Mar. 12 then be off until its 605 League opener against Cerritos. The Eagles were not scheduled to play any other nonleague games and have five seniors on a team of 15 players. The softball team was going through another sluggish start, winless through four games and blanked in its first two games while allowing 27 runs in the process. The Lady Eagles currently hold the longest playoff drought of the eight area teams (29 seasons) and have not had a winning season since 2004. The Lady Eagles last played on Mar. 5 and was to visit Valley Christian High on Mar. 12 in their final non-league game. LA MIRADA: Graduation is May 29 The baseball team was on its way to another stellar season, winning six of its first eight games and being ranked fifth in Division 1. The lone losses for the Matadors have been to Orange Lutheran High on Feb. 19 (2-0) and Ayala High on Feb. 29 (6-3) in the championship game of the Loara Tournament. La Mirada swept a doubleheader from Lakewood High last time out on Mar. 5 and the pitching staff has shutout three opponents. Seniors Jared Jones and Memo Pacheco each have a complete game shutout. The team was scheduled to go to Arizona for the Coach Bob Invitational Mar. 18-

Continued from page 10 21 before beginning Suburban League play in which the Matadors were to host Bellflower High today. Also scheduled was an appearance in the Boras Classic Apr. 14-17. Of the 26 players on the team, 15 of them are seniors. After a 3-1 start to the season, the softball team lost four straight games and eventually was sitting at 8-6 when games were put on hold. La Mirada last played on Mar. 7 and defeated Saugus High 8-6 in the final game of the Tournament of Champions in Bullhead City, AZ. It was the last of three straight wins. Upon their return to California, the Matadors were to have hosted a doubleheader against Cypress High and single games against Gahr and Whittier High before beginning Suburban League action against Bellflower. The team will graduate five seniors from a squad of 21 players. NORWALK: Graduation is June 2 The baseball team had already equaled the win total of last season by splitting its first eight games. The program has not seen a winning campaign since 2013, which is also the last time it has advanced to the playoffs. Because of construction to the athletic fields at the school, Norwalk High has played all its games on the road. The last time out was a 7-3 win at Rancho Alamitos High and the team was scheduled to face St. Paul High on Saturday in pool play action of the St. Paul Tournament. The Suburban League opener was slated for Tuesday against Firebaugh High, a newcomer to the league. There are five seniors on a team of 14 players. The softball team, looking to rebound from a two-win 2019 season, was off to a 6-3 start before everything stopped. The Lady Lancers began the season with a pair of shutouts and had scored 81 runs in the nine games and had already played half of the 605 League with a scheduled game against Whitney set for Mar. 12. Since a 3-1 loss to Cerritos on Mar. 4, Norwalk was to play four more non-league games prior to its Suburban League opener against Firebaugh on Tuesday. The Lady Lancers have four seniors on a team of

18 players. VALLEY CHRISTIAN: Graduation is May 21 The lone area team to have begun league action prior to stoppage in play was the Valley Christian baseball team, which lost to Maranatha High on Mar. 7 before crushing Village Christian High 14-2 on Mar. 10 in its last action. The Defenders were 4-7 and were seeking to end a twoyear absence from the postseason and had won two of their last three games. Other than their remaining 10 Olympic League games, including today’s road encounter against Maranatha, the Defenders were scheduled to play Legacy College Prep on Apr. 14 and Bishop Montgomery High on May 2. The team has five seniors out of 15 players. If the softball team was to keep its current pattern going from the previous four seasons, then the Lady Defenders were anticipating a trip to the playoffs. V.C. has reached the postseason in 2016 and 2018 after missing in 2017 and 2019 and was sporting a 3-5 record when play was halted. The team had to rescheduled games from the Savanna Showcase due to inclement weather and dropped a pair of games in the Santa Fe Tournament on Mar. 7, the last time the team played this season. The Lady Defenders, who would have visited Village Christian on Mar. 26 and Whittier Christian High on Tuesday to conclude the first round of Olympic League action, are looking for its first 10-win season since 2015. V.C. has four seniors out of 15 players. WHITNEY: Graduation is June 10 If there was ever a time for the Whitney baseball team to end a very long playoff drought that has lasted for over 20 seasons, this was it. The Wildcats were off to a 4-1 start after doubling up Calvary Chapel Downey High on 14-7 on Mar. 7. The program last had a winning season in 2017 when that team went 10-9. Prior to that, the program saw 17 straight losing seasons and did not have a season of more than five victories. Whitney was to have two more non-league games, then begin 605 League action this past week with a home game against Artesia today. What makes this situation even harder for the program is the fact that out of 10 players on the team, seven of them are seniors. When the softball team went 15-9 in 2019 and advanced to the quarterfinals, it had its best season since 2012. But in 2020, the program was not expected to play any 605 League games despite putting together a small schedule. The Lady Wildcats lost five of their first six games, yielding 62 runs. The team has two seniors on a team of 11 players

Athletic Directors scramble to make plans amidst Coronavirus pandemic shutdown BY LOREN KOPFF @LORENKOPFF ON TWITTER Thursday, March 12 will be a day in the world of sports that no one will ever forget. It was the day in which high school, collegiate and professional sporting events on all levels were beginning to get postponed or cancelled. Hour by hour on that day, and into the next few days, the hardest decisions were being made, but decisions that had to be made for the health and safety of everyone. In this immediate area, high school principals and athletic directors were scrambling around to come up with plans, both for the present and future, as to how they should cancel or postpone the remainder of the spring athletic season. “Once [the NCAA conference basketball tournaments were] being cancelled and the NBA was calling off games, I knew we would react someway,” said Artesia High co-athletic director Joe Veach. “I wasn’t quite sure how. I didn’t know if we would close the events or if we would do something to alter the events. But I knew we would react someway. Once I saw March Madness cancelled, that was kind of the big one where I went, ‘oh my gosh, they’re cancelling the basketball tournaments’.” Veach added that once it was around that time, the ABC Unified School District had said events would still go on, but with no spectators. Later on, as the news of the pandemic was growing worse, the decision was made to hold off on athletics until further notice. “The 605 League was already in close communication about how we might be handling the COVID-19 issues, which were quickly arising,” said Cerritos High co-athletic director Robert Adams. “Much more attention was being paid to how strongly affected areas, such as Washington state, were beginning to set up social distancing restrictions. Of course, we were all working with our districts to develop policies acceptable to them, and all of them were a little bit different.” “I read a lot and watch the news programs,” said Whitney High athletic director Jeff Day. “I figured the writing was on the wall for us. As a fan and [Los Angeles] Angels and [Los Angeles] Rams season ticket holder and everything UCLA, I was bummed as sports is a huge part of my life. [Two weeks ago], our monthly administration league meetings realized this is real and we are going to have to curtail our spring programs. At the time, we didn’t know if that meant delay, postpone or cancel.” Linda Parra, co-athletic director at John Glenn High, said she was amazed at
how quickly everything has transpired and added that on the day of the 605 League Principals/Athletic Directors meeting, which was on Mar. 12, Glenn principal Francisco Ramirez received a phone call from the Norwalk/La Mirada Unified School District in which it had already made the decision to cancel all athletic contests until Apr. 19. Soon after that, other schools and school districts followed suit. In the next 24-48 hours, each school was making contingency plans for the rest of the spring season, although it wasn’t that easy as something new was, and has been surfacing hour by hour for the past two weeks. Veach said his initial thought was not to shut down the spring sports as they are not as highly attended whereas football and basketball are. But what was making matters somewhat tricky was the fact that the other school districts for the other members of the 605 League had different opinions, which would have created some intricate planning for the rest of the season. He added that Oxford Academy athletic director David Clifton emailed the rest of the league stating that they were shutting down its events through the end of April, which would have been the end of the spring season as playoffs were scheduled to begin in May. Veach had proposed to have just one round of league competition once everyone returned from spring break. But that wouldn’t have worked in sports such as track and field and swimming in which teams face other league opponents once. “It was never set in stone; it was something we floated that I came up with,” Veach said. “Everybody seemed [like] we could do it. [But] with Glenn cancelling through spring break, I didn’t feel like they should have to forfeit. At this point, everyone was still [considering] playing.” “I informed our coaches that we would be cancelling all events until April.19,” Parra said. “We then got the news that we were restricted from practicing for two weeks. That has since changed, and we are restricted from practicing until after spring break. From there, we will be notified on how the district will proceed.” Since then, Cerritos principal Patrick Walker informed Glenn, Oxford Academy and Pioneer High that the ABCUSD had informed all its schools to cancel all athletics for the remainder of the school year. Veach also confirmed that directive by the district. Parra hasn’t received such word from the NLMUSD yet, but anticipates it will be the same direction Glenn will follow.

Continued from page 1 lies, who wished to remain anonymous, who expressed utter frustration, and fear, at the random cancellations. The cancellations caused those families to be without health care coverage for nearly two months until the situation was rectified. One family member told HMG-LCCN, “I have been with Covered California for two years, never missed a payment, I was on auto-pay with my credit card, nothing has changed in my family. Around December 15, 2019, I received a letter canceling my coverage, then I got a letter a couple weeks later from Blue Shield notifying me of the cancellation, and thanking me for being a customer.” “We were shocked, angry, and then fearful for our lack of coverage.” HMG-LCCN spoke to several Blue Shield agents who indicated the problem was with Covered California and stemmed from the massive agency changing the tax designation portion of the enrollment process. “The problem was so bad that Blue Shield had to assemble a team to handle all the complaints,” the agent said. Another said, “it’s just a mess.” The family member also stated the Covered California agents were extremely callous in handling the situation. “I wanted to get other coverage while waiting for the cancellation to be fixed, I could not even get a letter from them stating that my coverage was canceled, so without that I could not go and get my own insurance while they were fixing the problem.” After several back-and-forth emails, Covered California spokesperson James Scullary finally admitted the cancellations in a March 13 email, and put the blame administrative snafus. “Each year there are some cases that cannot be automatically processed, we have processes in place to identify those
To advertise call 562-407-3873 cases, review them, and if they are eligible for renewal, we manually renew their plans before any interruption in coverage.” Contradicting what the Blue Shield agents told HMG-LCCN, Scullary estimated “only 3,500 policies were delayed” and canceled. Over three months after Covered California customers were cancelled, and the eventual breakout of COVID-19, over 500 remained without health coverage. “We have identified all the impacted consumers and nearly all of them have had their coverage restored, including those who needed their coverage to apply to services received since Jan. 1. We are still processing about 500 cases and hope to have those completed next week.” “That’s great,” said the family member, “I know what they’re going through, I was on the phone for a total of five hours at least. My entire family had to go to the doctor and we all have prescriptions that we had to pay full price for, probably over $1000. Now I have to gather all the receipts fill out forms to get the money back. And during those months they never really told me if I was covered from January 1 or March 1, it was very disturbing.”

Continued from page 11 “During a 605 League meeting on Thursday, postponements and cancellations were discussed on a sport by sport basis,” Adams said. “By the time the meeting ended, the incredible fluidity of the situation was already making any plans difficult and the meeting adjourned with plans still being communicated as individual schools received district directives.” With the spring season pretty much a wash for most, or all schools, athletic administrators have been working on, or trying to put together some type of contingency plans for the summer and fall seasons. Veach said that he has been telling his coaches he doesn’t have the answers to any of their questions because every day something changes and that everyone just has to play it by ear. “Again, with the extreme fluidity of the situation, there are no firm plans on how, and more importantly, when athletics at Cerritos, or the 605 League commence,” Adams said. “Our focus has switched to the immediate concerns of

providing academic instruction to our students while the school closures remain in effect. As soon as some kind of timetable for that situation develops, I am certain we will meet and discuss a reasonable return to athletic activity in a manner reflective of the position in the calendar we are in at the time, as well as any considerations that may need to be made reflective of necessary social restrictions.” Parra said her goal is to hit the ground running and get all its athletes back on their playing fields/courts once she gets clearance and added that the students miss their practices, teams and coaches. She also said it will be interesting to see how the California Interscholastic Federation responds in regards to the summer dead period and wonders is schools will still be asked to enforce the dead period now that all schools are essentially on a dead period at this time. “I am keeping my fingers crossed we will be given access to practice as much as we want this summer. I am hoping to have my clearance steps in place for next year, but summer is on hold until I gather more information,” Day said. I’ll be in close contact with all student athletes and coaches in a few days (or more a week).”

CENTRAL BASIN
Continued from page 1 records related to employee spending. And they also found out that the employees filed a false police report. They immediately let Vasquez out of the car and let her go. The call to the sheriffs was made by Andrew Hamilton, current Finance Director of Central Basin, who does not recognize Vasquez nor Vice President Art Chacon as rightful Board Officers. Hamilton bases his abhorrent behavior on a questionable letter written by Olivarez Madruga Lemieux and O'Neill attorney Steve O'Neill on February 27 that argued the vote to elect Vasquez and Chacon was not approved by a majority. HMG-LCCN was first to report on that letter last week. Vasquez alleges that Hamilton, who accused other Central Basin employees of misuse of the agency’s credit card, is in fact misusing the credit cards himself. Hamilton also alledged that certain employees are committing payroll fraud, not coming into work and then receiving a paycheck. Hamilton was hired by disgraced former GM Kevin Hunt, who was let go in December 2019 after the agency found they never validated his contract. At the time an exclusive HMGLCCN report found that Hunt was land-

ing lucrative consulting contracts for his own company Hunt-Thorton, which was forbidden by his employment contract. In an email Vasquez told HMGLCCN, "What happened today is very unfortunate however it is crystal clear that we must move forward with conducting a forensic audit of Central Basins finances. Mr. Hamilton's disturbing and erratic behavior raises red flags about why he's continued to withhold requested financial documents from Directors." "Mr. Hamilton is also guilty of paying his friend Kevin Hunt a salary and benefits after being told Hunt's contract was invalid-this is a gift of public funds. Andrew has made numerous illegal payments that have never been approved or brought before the Board.' A retired law enforcement officer who did not want to be identified told HMGLCCN after reading the story, "The sheriffs totally mishandled the situation. The sheriff deputies should have separated Vasquez from the other employees inside the building and interviewed each party, not put her in a police vehicle. At that point she was basically arrested and unlawfully restrained. She was not free to leave or walk away, she was even guarded by a deputy sheriff to ensure her freedom was taken away. The deputies violated her constitutional rights." The entire incident was live streamed on Facebook by activist Juan Martinez.

You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call or visit this Internet Web site www.ndscorp.com/sales, using the file number assigned to this case 19-31207-PM-CA. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site.
