HMG-CN Publishing Services La Palma Intercommunity Hospital this week was named one of the nation’s 100 Top Hospitals® by Truven Health AnalyticsTM, a leading provider of information and solutions to improve the cost and quality of healthcare. The Truven Health 100 Top Hospitals® study identifies hospitals and leadership teams that provide the highest level of value to their communities, based on a national balanced scorecard. The 100 Top Hospitals balanced scorecard measures hospital performance across 10 areas: mortality; inpatient complications; patient safety; average patient stay; expenses; profitability; patient satisfaction; adherence to clinical standards of care; and post-discharge mortality and readmission rates for acute myocardial infarction (heart attack), heart failure, and pneumonia. The study has been conducted annually since 1993. This is the first time that La Palma Intercommunity Hospital has been recognized with this award. “We are so proud to receive this prestigious award at La Palma Intercommunity Hospital,” said Virg Narbutas, CEO of La Palma Intercommunity Hospital. “This

recognition speaks volumes to our commitment to quality patient care and could not have been achieved without the hard work and dedication of all our staff.” For the 100 Top Hospitals® study, Truven Health researchers analyzed public information — Medicare cost reports, Medicare Provider Analysis and Review (MedPAR) data, and core measures and patient satisfaction data from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Hospital Compare website. The winning hospitals were announced in the March 3, 2014, edition of Modern Healthcare magazine. “This year’s 100 Top Hospitals represent the highest national standards in hospital care and management today. They set the benchmarks for peers around the country to follow — consistently delivering outstanding quality of care, satisfaction, and community value at a reasonable cost,” said Jean Chenoweth, senior vice president for performance improvement and the 100 Top Hospitals® program at Truven Health Analytics. “The majority of the 2014 award winners have produced year-to-year performance improvement, as well. This speaks to the consistent focus on excellence by the entire organization and the men and women who serve patients.” The study shows that if all hospitals in the U.S. performed at the level of this year's winners: • Nearly 165,000 additional lives could be saved • Nearly 90,000 additional patients could be complication-free • More than $5.4 billion could be saved • The average patient stay would decrease by half a day More information on this study and other 100 Top Hospitals research is available at 100tophospitals.com.

Breaking: Recall Campaign Launched Against Central Basin Director Leticia Vasquez By Randy Economy and Brian Hews Leticia Vasquez is no stranger to recall campaigns in Southeast Los Angeles County. The embattled Director of the Central Basin Municipal Water District was booted out Leticia Vasquez of office by voters in Lynwood on political corruption allegations ten years ago. The case was the focus of one of the biggest federal indictments in US history that landed then Lynwood Mayor Paul Richards in federal prison for a decade. She was recalled in 2007 after serving just one term in office in Lynwood. In addition to Richards, two other fellow councilmembers at that time went on to serve prison sentences for public corruption. Hews Media Group-Community Newspapers has learned that Vasquez is now the main target from a group of “concerned water customers” throughout the Central Basin territory. They want the Division 4 Director stripped of her elected duties for misusing her public office. This week, proponents announced a recall effort to oust Vasquez and HMG-CN has confirmed that organizers have begun the formal legal process of drafting the necessary documents to be filed with the Los Angeles County Registar-Recorder's Office in Norwalk. The organizers, who do not want to be publicly identified at the time this article was written, said the gathering of the needed signatures could commence as soon as recall notices are published in a newspaper of general circulation. One proponent said, "concerned ratepayers have grown frustrated with the antics and possible criminal activities that seem to be a part of everyday life for Vasquez. For over a year Leticia Vasquez has consistently made headlines for a campaign financed by a convicted felon, receiving substantial campaign funds from Pacifica Services and CEO Ernie Camacho, steering government contracts to personal friends and campaign supporters, filing a lawsuit against CBMWD, and allegedly shakingdown doing business with the struggling water agency." Central Basin has been at the center of growing controversy since Vasquez' election. HMG-CN has published numerous articles since Jan 2013 highlighting Vasquez’ suspect dealings. HMG-CN was the first to reveal that Vasquez filed an August 2013 "Qui Tam" whistleblower lawsuit against several former contractors and employees of Central Basin, most of whom she aggressively sought campaign contributions from during her 2012 run for office. The revelation of the lawsuit showed that Vasquez was trying to cash in on a possible $2.5 million verdict by using her insider status at the District as a sittingDirector. According to the proponent, "Vasquez took information that previous management at the District uncovered and claimed it as her own. She then proceeded to concoct a devious plan to portray herself as a "watchdog" at the District while simultaneously seeking a substantial reward." Fellow Board Members Art Chacon and Phil Hawkins have labeled Vasquez an opportunist trying to get rich. In addition, numerous constituent complaints have been filed against Vasquez with the District Attorney and the Fair Political Practices Committee who as recently as January 21, 2014 opened an active investigation against Vasquez for attempting to conceal campaign donations.
One substantial donation that went unreported was a $1,797.80 lavish campaign fundraiser hosted by Andy Camacho, brother of Pacifica Services, Inc. owner Ernie Camacho. Camacho and his firm, longtime contractors with Central Basin, sued the District months ago. Last week, HMG-CN revealed that Vasquez sent a representative to shakedown Camacho in exchange for her vote to settle the lawsuit in Pacifica's favor. CBMWD lawyers have said their case against Pacifica is very strong, given more strength with the articles published this week by HMG-CN about Mike Sisson’s numerous Friday golf outings with former GM Art Aguilar and the thousands of racist and homophobic emails Sisson sent out from CBMWD while making $160 per hour. Recall proponents also cited Vasquez’ questionable 2012 campaign contributors that helped propel her back into public office. HMG-CN was the first to report Vasquez' campaign had largely been managed and financed by a convicted felon and former Central Basin Director Ricardo "Rick" Mayer of Whittier. It was also revealed that notable campaign contributors to Vasquez' campaign included recently indicted Senator Ronald Calderon of Montebello, Central Basin Director Robert “Bob” Apodaca (a staunch ally on the Board), attorney Ron Wilson, who is her long time life partner, past Central Basin vendors such as recently indicted former Assemblyman Tom Calderon, Pacifica Services Inc., Robert Garcia, Southwest Management Consultants, Golden State Advocacy, HDR Inc., Attorney Doug Wance, and C2 Group. Vasquez has also faced ongoing skepticism about her official place of residence. Her voter-identified residence is listed as 3817 Walnut Ave. in Lynwood while multiple sources claim that address is actually her brother's home and that she resides in Baldwin Hills with her boyfriend Ron Wilson. The Baldwin Hills address is not in her Central Basin service District. HMG-CN has learned that the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office of Public Corruption is aware of the residential controversy swirling around Vasquez and Wilson. The recall proponent noted that residency issues existed when Vasquez was on the Lynwood Council and the fact she did not live in Lynwood was a huge factor in her overwhelming recall. "Leticia Vasquez has always felt she was too good for the people she was elected to represent, she was more than willing to exploit them to get herself elected, but not to live among them," he added. Recall organizers have 160 days to collect the 10,420 signatures required to force an election to recall Vasquez. “That may seem like a lot, but we have a motivated and well-funded team in place that are sick and tired of "bottom of the barrel" predator politicians like Leticia Vasquez," the proponent said. He was told that Vasquez was talking about running for higher office the second she was sworn-in at Central Basin already plotting bigger paydays for herself. "This will hopefully be Leticia's last recall and the last time area voters will have to deal with this self-serving so-called public servant, we are done with her," he concluded

Dear Editor: My comment about this story might have nothing to do with water, but Mr. Roybal was a teacher at Garfield High School a few years ago and I was aware of at least two students he was accused of harrassing. I don’t know why he wasn’t fired then but he was transfered to Wilson that summer. I knew one of the guys that Roybal hit on pretty good. He said Mr. Roybal would help him with his homework and would take him to eat after school. He says he would buy him shirts and shoes too. I don’t know the other guy he was after, but I think he was younger than my friend. A few of my friends say that that boy was gay and thatn his parents took him out of school. I hear Mr.Roybal paid them money to shut up. I hope the school district finally fires him. He wasn’t never a good teacher and no students actually like him. Some students say he had magazines in his backpack and went crazy one time when some kids hide it under his desk Web Submittal

CRIME SUMMARIES Feb. 24-Mar. 2
Cerritos There were 11 Part I felony crimes investigated during this week’s reporting period, which is a nice decline from the 30 reported the previous week and the 2014 weekly average of about 19 Part I crimes. The following is a breakdown of the reported crimes by category: no robberies (always good news); one aggravated assault (a domestic violence case); four residential burglaries (the same as the previous week); one commercial burglary; four vehicle burglaries; one grand theft; and one stolen vehicle. Deputies made one felony arrest, 11 misdemeanor arrests, four warrant arrests, and issued 79 traffic citations. The Sheriff’s dispatch center also received 234 calls for service, a decrease from the 2014 weekly average of 251 calls. On Friday, 2/28, a woman reported that her boyfriend pushed her through a glass window. Fortunately, the victim was not seriously injured (this is the second report of a domestic violence incident in the past two weeks). Two residential burglaries were also reported on 2/28. The first occurred in the afternoon in the 11300 block of Sharon Street. The front door was pried, but fortunately there appears to have been no entry into the home. Later that afternoon, in the 11000 block of Hibbing Street, a suspect shattered a rear window of the residence but nothing was taken. A witness observed a white Lexus parked in front of the location at about the same time of the break-in, although it is unknown if the vehicle was involved. The other two residential burglaries occurred over the weekend. On Saturday, 3/1, a suspect kicked in the front door of a home in the 19100 block of Martha Avenue. A laptop computer, jewelry, and $100 in cash were stolen. On Sunday, 3/2, someone broke a rear window and entered a home in the 13000 block of Rose Street. The report is not yet on file and it is unknown if any property was stolen. The commercial burglary occurred at a construction site on South Street near
Carmenita Avenue. Someone entered an unlocked trailer and stole a computer. Fingerprint investigations were conducted at each of these crime scenes, but no suspects have been identified at this time. Four vehicle burglaries occurred this past week, two in public parking lots and two in residential areas. All four vehicles were entered after thieves shattered windows to gain access. Just after midnight on Tuesday, 2/25, a Dodge Durango parked on College Place behind the Home Depot Center was entered and a purse was stolen. Just before noon on 3/2, a Mercedes parked in a public lot on 166th Street near Bloomfield was the target and a purse and jewelry were stolen. During overnight hours on 2/26-27, golf clubs were stolen from a Chevy Suburban parked in the 20100 block of Plaza De Cordoba. And finally, during the overnight hours of 2/26-27, a bag with school supplies was stolen from a Ford Expedition in the 19900 block of Mapes Avenue. The grand theft occurred at the Apple Store in the Los Cerritos Center. About noon on Thursday, 2/27, a male suspect made off with six sample iPhones. Although credit card fraud occurs at this store periodically, such brazen thefts are pretty rare. In the final crime category, auto theft, there was one reported crime this past week. On Friday, 2/28, between about 5 p.m. and 7 p.m., a 1989 Honda Civic was stolen from the Towne Center. Because older model Hondas and Toyotas (1990s and older) are frequently the target of auto thieves, it is suggested that a club or other steering wheel locking device be used in public parking lots. Preventing Vehicle Burglaries The La Mirada Public Safety Team would like to make residents aware of several types of thefts from vehicles. These thefts include catalytic converters, global positioning systems (GPS), third row seats, and personal belongings. “When you are away from your vehicle, it is important to lock your vehicle and place GPS devises, purses, cell phones, and other personal belongings in the trunk or out of plain view,â€? says Crime Scene Technician Jennifer Anderson. “It only takes a few seconds to gain entry to a vehicle and steal viewable contents.â€? By placing valuables out of sight, your vehicle is less likely to be targeted. At night, always park your vehicle near well-lit areas and remove all personal items from your vehicle. “Resident tips have played a key role in assisting deputies with the arrest of several criminals caught committing these types of offenses,â€? says Anderson. Residents are encouraged to be a good neighbor by joining Neighborhood Watch and reporting suspicious activity to the La Mirada Community Sheriff’s Station. To join Neighborhood Watch or to report suspicious activity, contact the La Mirada Community Sheriff’s Station at (562) 902-2960.

on administrative leave pending further progress in an independent investigation conducted by Sheppard, Mullin, Richter, and Hampton, LLP that had been called for on behalf of the board of directors of the facility “We were stunned, shocked and saddened at the level of corporate misconduct and concealment that was perpetrated by our former CEO,” said Brian Walton, chairman of the Board of Directors at Tri-City Regional Medical Center. “Our former CEO was a long-term health care professional whom we trusted with fulfilling our mission as a non-profit hospital. It’s been an arduous process of unraveling all of the financial malfeasance we discovered, but we are confident in our new administration’s ability to restore our focus to improving the wellbeing of the communities we serve.” Four months later, on April 7th 2011 the board at the hospital terminated Gerrick as President and CEO. Early in 2012, Jim Sherman, a veteran health care leader, was brought in to oversee the hospital’s operations. In addition, the hospital has added several other experienced individuals to its leadership team. The hospital also has added numerous new physicians to its medical staff, including recognized leaders in their respective areas of specialization.

Around that same time, hospital personnel informed their legal attorney Bearl Weiner of the Law firm of Selvin and Weiner APC about Gerrick’s activities, and that according to the report filed to the IRS, Gerrick “had engaged in and/or failed to stop a variety of harassing, offensive, intimidating, or oppressive acts that allegedly resulted in the creation of a hostile work environment” at the Hawaiian Gardens based medical facility. Attorney Weiner promptly reported the allegations to the hospital board directors regarding Gerrick, and the board immediately launched an internal investigation. HMG-CN has also learned that Gerrick spent hospital funds for improper payments (allegedly given to Drobot) over a number of years. The Sheppard Mullin investigation also revealed that when Gerrick tried to get payments or reimbursements, the hospital’s Director of Finance at Tri- Cities Medical Group refused to approve such payments unless Gerrick “complied with hospital and internal revenue service requirements concerning documentation for payment or reimbursement of expenses.” The IRS filing slams Gerrick for repeatedly failing and refusing to follow mandated protocol and as a result Tri City Hospital’s Director of Finance refused to approve such payments and also refused
to sign expense reimbursement checks that Gerrick had requested. HMG-CN has also learned that Gerrick alone approved the payments and signed the checks, in direct contravention of Internal Revenue Service standards. In the IRS filing the hospital’s Director of Finance acknowledged that because of Gerrick’s “threats she felt intimidated by him and therefore did not report the events to attorney Weiner or the board.” The newspaper was also informed that Gerrick caused Tri Cities Hospital to make “inappropriate arrangements with third-party vendors that were detrimental to the hospital.” One of those vendors is believed to be Dr. Michel Drobot. Sheppard-Mullin investigators also informed IRS officials that Gerrick “actively concealed his activities and actions in misconduct from Mr. Weiner and board of directors at Tri City Hospital.” Drobot, 69, of Corona Del Mar, orchestrated a wide-ranging conspiracy involving the Calderon’s and according to Federal prosecutor’s paid illegal kickbacks in exchange for legislation to be written to directly benefit a multi-million dollar spinal surgery operation that was run out of the two facilities. Drobot agreed to plead guilty to just two felony counts, which could send him to federal prison for as long as 10 years. Prosecutors allege the Drobot, from 1997 to 2013, and the main owner of Pacific Hospital until late last year, said that he “ran a scheme in which he billed workers’ compensation insurers hundreds of millions of dollars for spinal surgeries performed on patients who had been referred by dozens of doctors, chiropractors, and others who were paid illegal kickbacks.” For the referrals for the spinal surgeries, Drobot typically paid a kickback of $15,000 per lumbar fusion surgery and $10,000 per cervical fusion surgery.

GOLF
Continued from page 1 Services was banking millions of dollars in lucrative engineering consulting contracts with the besieged agency that is the focus of a massive criminal probe by the US Department of Justice, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office and the Internal Revenue Service. Almost every Friday, Maggie Gomez, administrative assistant at the Commercebased water utility would book tee times for the group at some of the most exclusive courses in Southern California, with Aguilar always treated and serving as the center of attention. Talega in San Clemente, Tijeras Creek in Ranch Santa Margarita, Black Gold in Yorba Linda, and Industry Hills in the city of Industry. Most of these courses have green fees over $90 per person, sometimes much more than that figure, and that does not count on-course and after-round food and beverages. Taking into account the hourly pay rates of those involved, Ernie Camacho (estimate) $500; Sisson $165; Hennesey $125; and Aguilar $100 per hour and adding those to the green fees and the food and beverage, the total could easily reach $6,000. Worse, the outings would last the entire day with no one from the group going back to work at CBMWD. Shockingly, CBMWD would be charged for those hours by Pacifica. Aguilar, always invited yet never paying, would relish the perks of being GM and cozy up to one of the district’s biggest vendors, Pacifica Services, a company now suing CBMWD, with CBMWD counter suing for negligence and contract fraud in Superior Court. But Aguilar forgot something in the process of schmoosing with Camacho and Sisson. Hews Media Group-Community News has obtained documents through a public record records request that show Aguilar and Sisson taking more than twenty golf outings in a 17-month period, with Aguilar failing to report all but three outings on his Statement of Economic Interest-Form 700. One source at CBMWD said, “these are the golf dates mentioned in emails, there were many more that were not documented in writing electronically.” State laws are clear; failure to report or amend carries a late fine of $10 per day, up to a $100 fine may be assessed. In addition, if a matter is referred to the FPPC Enforcement Division for failure to file or failure to include all required economic interests, the fine may be substantially higher, and could also be subject to criminal prosecution. According to the Fair Political Practices Commission website Form 700’s are “an important means for the official that files them, the media, and the public to help gauge where potential conflicts of interest may exist. These state mandated forms include information about the sources of an official’s income, investments, business positions, real property holdings and gifts. Merely reporting an economic interest is not a conflict in itself; a conflict arises when an official governmental decision, made by the official, impacts their economic interests.” The key words here are “impacting their economic interests.” For Aguilar and Pacifica Services, using golf courses to conduct taxpayer business became routine, and standard operating procedure. In August of 2012, HMG-CN exclusively obtained documents that detailed an orchestrated collaboration between Aguilar, former Interim CBMWD GM
Dave Hill, Sisson, and Camacho, showing contracts being altered that were never approved by the Directors at CBMWD. At the time, the besieged public agency was the focus of a massive criminal probe by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. HMG-CN also obtained email exchanges between Hill, Camacho, his son Michael Camacho, and Sisson dating back several years that graphically outlined how the private consulting firm leveraged its political clout at the agency outside of the public glare. The documents outlined how Camacho, Sisson, and Aguilar interfaced via company emails and graphically displayed how the “pay to play” scheme between the agency and Pacifica Services was conducted both at CBMWD and on the golf course. Based on source inside CBMWD, HMG-CN has made an additional public record request that could further show the depth of control Pacifica and Sisson had over CBMWD and Aguilar. One CBMWD source who did not want to be identified said, “ Sisson, Aguilar, and Hennessey would go golfing almost every week, blatantly using company resources to schedule their outings, everyone here knew where they were going, Sisson would make sure of that by wearing golf outfits on Friday. They did not care because they had Aguilar in their pocket.” Calls into Aguilar and Pacifica for comment went unreturned.
SHAKEDOWN
Continued from page 1 against Pacifica in favor of Pacifica. CB’s suit against Pacifica is potentially worth upwards of $5 million to the cashstrapped water agency. According to sources, Pacifica Services may not have possessed the necessary California State License to contract with public agencies while doing work for CB. If this is the case, fraud may have been committed by Pacifica and CB could sue for the entire $5 million. Pacifica has counter-sued the District and is seeking in excess of $300,000 in unpaid invoices that CB has determined are invalid. Only a few days after the “shakedown” meeting with Camacho, and possibly violating Brown Act laws, Vasquez, and Board Members Robert Apodaca and James Roybal called for a Special Board meeting this Tuesday, March 4th at 11am with only Pacifica and the District’s listed lawsuits on the agenda. Also noteworthy is the fact that Pacifica Vice President Mike Sisson is scheduled for a deposition this week regarding the lawsuit between the two parties. One source, who did not want to be identified who is familiar with the situation told HMG-CN that “Normal practice would have been for the Board President to call the Special Meeting, but according to current President Phil Hawkins, he was blindsided once again by the three banding together.” Central Basin has a regularly scheduled Board Meeting set for March 13th, and held a meeting only eight days ago. Hawkins, a former State Assemblyman and longtime CB Director, questioned the process to call for the meeting and indicated the three could have violated Brown Act Open Meeting Laws. Hawkins said, “if these three are coming in to give Pacifica a sudden victory and huge financial windfall against the strong advice of our legal counsel, then I think we have a bigger problem here.” Pacifica’s long association with CB began in 2007 with a presentation by then CB Consultant Tom Calderon strongly recommending that CB retain the services
of the minority-owned Pasadena engineering firm. Subsequently, Pacifica bid and won a $600,000 contract in 2007. HMG-CN exclusively published documents that showed eight no-bid contract extensions over the next five years resulting in Pacifica billing in excess of $5 million. During this time, Board Members Phil Hawkins and Art Chacon were demanding an audit and accountability of the contract and sought to block further extensions including a final $2.2 million two-year extension that would have ran into 2015. Attempts to audit Pacifica’s contract and billings were then blocked by Vasquez, Apodaca, and Roybal. Then in January 2013, Vasquez, Apodaca, and Roybal stopped the investigation by Interim Chief Operating Officer Chuck Fuentes and Assistant to the General Manager Ron Beilke into Pacifica’s contracts by firing the two without notice. HMG-CN reported in Feb 2013 that Vasquez, Apodaca, and Roybal accepted a combined $45,000 in “reported” campaign contributions from Camacho and his Pacifica-related sources, including his family. Sources familiar with the District claim that Roybal and Vasquez boasted that Camacho may have provided huge “unreported” support to their respective campaigns. Both candidates secured victories while reporting almost $30,000 in unpaid campaign debt. Some of the debt remains unpaid. HMG-CN has published a series of articles highlighting Pacifica’s influence at the troubled water agency. Reports initially published by HMG-CN highlighted the existence of a $2.7 million “slush fund” that secretly netted Pacifica an estimated $750,000 in fees. Also reported was the discovery of regularly scheduled day-long Friday golf outings at lavish exclusive courses that included Pacifica’s Camacho, Vice President Mike Sisson, Pacifica employee Scott Hennessey and former CB General Manager Art Aguilar. Aguilar reported only three “golf donations” made to him by Pacifica on his mandatory 700 Statement of Economic Interests disclosure forms while golfing at least 20 times and is expected to be investigated by the Fair Political Practices Commission. This weekend, HMG-CN received part of an estimated 16,000 emails distributed by Pacifica’s VP and CB point man Mike Sisson that were extremely offensive and sexually explicit. These emails, generated onsite at CB and on District-owned equipment by Sisson, can be best described as homophobic and racist while targeting Muslims, Palestinians, Hispanics, Blacks, Asians, seniors, naked woman, obese individuals, liberals, immigrants, Wal Mart shoppers and rednecks. Sisson, a conservative republican, also distributed extremely offensive emails pertaining to President Obama, First Lady Michelle Obama, Rep. Nancy Pelosi, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid as well as other well-know liberal U.S. politicians. When informed of Tuesday’s Special Board Meeting, CB Director Art Chacon commented, “considering we held a Board Meeting only eight days ago where our newly hired legal counsel assured us that the outcome of our lawsuit against Pacifica would result in the likely recovery of millions in ratepayer monies, I question where Apodaca, Roybal, and Vasquez plan to go with this emergency meeting.” Chacon added, “with the discovery that these three Director’s solicited over $40,000 in campaign contributions from Pacifica as well as the recent news of all the golf outings and now the discovery of
MARCH 7, 2014

thousands and thousands of racially offensive emails initiated by Pacifica’s VP Mike Sisson, I think this Board needs to get out of the way and let the legal system do its job”.
RECALL
Continued from page 1 HMG-CN was told that Susan Rodriguez, one of the petition gatherers in the recall effort against Mayor Joe Aguilar and City Councilmembers Ivan Altamirano, Tina Baca Del Rio, and Leila Leon, witnessed Councilwoman Leon driving along Fitzgerald Street. When Leon saw Rodriguez talking to a voter, she exited her vehicle, approached her and the voter, who was in the process of signing the document, and yelled, “don’t sign that petition!” Another signature gatherer who did not want to be identified told HMG-CN that Leon continued to tell the voter and Rodriguez that HMG-CN was “getting indicted for perjury.” The source went on to say that Leon then got back into her car, drove off, and continued to follow Rodriguez and her associates down the street. HMG-CN was also told that Councilwoman Baca Del Rio then arrived at the location where the signature gathering was being conducted and that she proceeded to “stare down” potential recall signature participants who were talking to proponents of the campaign. HMG-CN was told that signature collectors are “contemplating” filing a complaint with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department on both Leon and Baca del Rio for “voter intimidation” as well as “interfering in the electoral process.” The group of petition gatherers claim that they are on target in reaching their goal that would ensure a Fall special election. “The response has been positive and overwhelming at this stage of the gathering,” said Miguel Alvarado a resident of Commerce and one of the main leaders of the recall movement. Petition gathers have already visited homes throughout Commerce “for the first time” and are planning to double up on their efforts during the next several days, according to Alvarado. “We are moving forward and the residents are excited to sign the recall petitions,” he said. Alvarado would not give the exact number of signatures that have been collected thus far but did tell HMG-CN that the recall organizers are “working around the clock” to collect the 1,570 names that are required by election officials in order to force the recall election. “We want to collect 2,000 signatures, and the goal is to get this done as quickly as possible. People want change here in Commerce, especially the seniors who are living on tight budgets these days,” Alvarado stressed.

2014 SOFTBALL PREVIEW Experience and more incoming freshmen lead to stronger squads this season By Loren Kopff If the 2014 softball season is any indication what the future has in store for the seven area teams, then sit back and enjoy the new wave of young players. While experience and very deep benches still headline the area, the story may just be on the freshmen who figure to make an immediate presence. Cerritos, Gahr and Valley Christian are predicted to finish as league champions while Artesia, John Glenn, Norwalk and Whitney are hoping to bounce back from adequate 2013 campaigns.

Unlike the past seven head coaches who didn’t stay more than three seasons, Feenstra plans to stay here longer. “I know the organization and it’s something I’ve always wanted to do after I graduated from college-to come back and help the program out,” Feenstra said. “I didn’t know when it would happen, but I knew ultimately I would become the head coach here.” Artesia’s pitching staff is a bit rusty with junior Sarah Guerrero slated to be
the No. 1 hurler. But the Pioneers have pitching depth, something they haven’t had in quite some time. Artesia’s strength lies in the bats as sophomore center fielder Ali Vega, who moves from first base, batted .352 last season and scored 24 runs. Guerrero batted .318 and drove in 23 runs while senior infielder Sabrina Manzano hit .294, drove in 15 runs and scored 15 runs. “Sarah definitely has come a long way,” Feenstra said. “I know last year she said she didn’t play probably to the highest level as she could. So, she’s getting challenged a lot more.” Feenstra said that all of the infielders are interchangeable and her team will surprise some people with some of the talent they have. Artesia has won 13 Suburban League games since 1998 but lost to league powerhouses Cerritos by seven runs, Mayfair by five runs and La Mirada by four runs last season. In any event, Feenstra, who has stayed close with the program since she graduated, is very pleased to take over. “I think it’s different now because my name is on the program and there will be higher standards because of my name.” Feenstra said. “I just hold the girls higher than I would have had I been a volunteer coach or an assistant coach.”
CERRITOS LADY DONS (13-11 overall last season, 8-4 in the Suburban League, third place, lost to Lakewood 3-2 in the Division II first round) Head coach: Mike Freeman (first season) Team’s record previous five seasons: 67-57 Last time missed the playoffs: 2008 Key losses: Erin Clinton, Jasmine Javier (SR), Kaylilani Minami, Miki Okazaki Projected lineup: P-Jennifer Iseri (JR)/Melanie Okazaki (JR) C-Heather Cameron (JR)/Madison Lee (JR) 1B-Iseri/Lee/Destiny Lucero (FR) 2B-Lilianna Herrera (SR)/Leeann Tran (JR) 3B-Amanda Lejano (JR)/Okazaki SS-Lailoni Mayfield (FR) OF-Megan Darling (JR)/Alyssa Flores (SO)/Rebekah Maldonado (SO)/Justina Peko (JR)/Alana Soltis (FR)/Tran OF-Okazaki OF-Kaitlyn Bales (JR)/Cameron/Peko/ Tran Don’t look too much into the record Cerritos had last season. An injury to star junior pitcher Jennifer Iseri plus another pitcher leaving the team in the first month hampered the Lady Dons just a bit. But Cerritos remained a favorite to win the league last season and expect that to happen again this season with first-year head coach Mike Freeman replacing Bob

Medina. Freeman says the players will be more aggressive on the bases and at the plate as well as get up in the count more. “It’s a chance for me to implement my style of play,” Freeman said. “When I worked at Mater Dei under Doug Myers, I got the chance to put some stuff in but never my own system.” The defense was solid last year but the offense was blazing with junior catchers Heather Cameron batting .381 and Madison Lee batting .306. Cameron will be behind the plate about 85 percent of the time catching Iseri while Lee will be on the receiving end of junior Melanie Okazaki. When healthy, Iseri was 3-2 with an earned run average of 0.91 in almost 31 innings with 35 strikeouts. Freshman shortstop Lailoni Mayfield might be the leadoff hitter and has big shoes to fill replacing the graduated Erin Clinton while the primary outfielders will be sophomore Alyssa Flores in left, Okazaki in center and junior Kaitlyn Bales in right. Cerritos had a share of the league title in 2011, but has finished in second and third place since then. Freeman is confident his squad can take home the top prize again, which would be just the second time since the Lady Dons won the California Interscholastic FederationSouthern Section Division II championship in 2000. “I would be absolutely shocked if we didn’t,” Freeman said. “With the work we’ve put in…we’ve been going hard since September. Everyone is here every day and every single girl has gotten a lot better, especially with the hitting. You’re going to be surprised with the hitting.”
GAHR GLADIATORS (11-15 overall last season, 4-6 in the San Gabriel Valley League, fourth place) Head coach: Shawn Quarles (second season, 11-15) Team’s record previous five seasons: 43-84 Last time made the playoffs: 2009 Key losses: Erika Espinoza (SO-transferred to John Glenn), Mel Varela Projected lineup: P-Naomi Dickerson (FR)/Deidra Genera (JR)/Vanessa Montanez (JR)/Destiny Vasquez (JR) C-Brianna Besenty (JR)/Alyssa Kumiyama (FR)/Kristen Redaja (SO) 1B-Celeste Gonzalez (JR)/Alyssa Rodriguez (SO)/Redaja 2B-Erica Balboa (SR)/Besenty/Vasquez 3B-Genera/Celeste Gonzalez/Montanez/ Malia Quarles (FR) SS-Deja Portillo (JR)/Vasquez OF-Sabrina Quarles (JR) OF-Alyssa Cuffia (SO) OF-Balboa/Montanez Gahr has not won a San Gabriel

Valley League title since 2008 when the Gladiators advanced to the quarterfinals. But head coach Shawn Quarles believes the Gahr program is set for more than just this season. Gahr struggled again last season for its third straight fourth place finish despite the team batting .356 with eight everyday players hitting over .300. “I think it was a learning experience for us coaches as far as what we could expect and the personnel that we had,” Quarles said. “I wouldn’t say that I was disappointed. I think we did what we could.” Depth, depth and more depth is the story for Gahr and it starts with a pitching staff that Quarles plans to keep fresh by utilizing a rotating basis each game. Junior Deidra Genera won six games last season, had 50 strikeouts and lowered her earned run average by more than two runs. Junior Destiny Vasquez comes over from Norwalk where she was the team’s top hurler but also batted .516 with 32 hits, 24 RBI, 21 runs and five home runs. Junior Vanessa Montanez had an ERA of 1.07 in limited action last season while freshman Naomi Dickerson has already verbally committed to Penn State University Freshman Alyssa Kumiyama, who verbally committed to the University of South Carolina, is slated to be the No. 1 catcher while the infield is beyond solid with junior first baseman Celeste Gonzalez (.500, 37 hits, 35 RBI, 27 runs), senior second baseman Erica Balboa (.408, 31 hits, 24 runs, three home runs) and junior shortstop Deja Portillo. Genera, when not pitching, and freshman Malia Quarles, who will be a future University of California, Los Angeles player, will spend a lot of time at third base. The outfield is anchored by sophomore center fielder Alyssa Cuffia (.453, 34 hits, 24 runs and three home runs).
Junior Sabrina Quarles is a transfer from Rosary. The tons of depth Gahr has means that a lot of talented players will be sitting on the bench. However, the secondyear head coach doesn’t see that as a problem. “Girls are always coming up hurt,” Shawn Quarles said. “We were actually down to 10 players over the winter because of all of the injuries we had. Just having various strong backups, especially if someone’s bat goes cold…it’s another fortunate thing we have; to be deep on the bench with very talented players.” Gahr, which dominated the league in the late 1990s and again not too long ago, could have a better squad than the 2007 team that went 24-5 overall, 10-0 in league and got to the first of two straight quarterfinal trips. But Shawn Quarles isn’t giving his team the league crown just yet, knowing that Downey and Warren are still the teams to beat. “Those schools are always going to put together good teams,” he said. “I definitely would have to say we’re right there in the mix. I think they have to worry about us just as much as we have to worry about them. We definitely plan on going to the playoffs but we’ll see how it all pans out.”
JOHN GLENN LADY EAGLES (10-12 overall last season, 3-9 in the Suburban League, fifth place) Head coach: Albert Enriquez (second season, 10-12) Team’s record previous five seasons: 35-75 Last time made the playoffs: 1990 Key losses: Gabby Cruz, Jocelyn Galvez, Jacqueline Leon, Brenda Lopez, Denise Miranda, Marina Ramirez, Jessica Wallace (SR)
Projected lineup: P-Destiny Enriquez (SO)/Ashley Armas (FR) C-Alyssa Fajardo (SO)/Briana Ruiz (SR) 1B-Maria Enriquez (FR)/Alize Lopez (FR)/Armas 2B-Jackie Mojica (JR)/Valeria Ortega (SR) 3B-Fajardo/Armas SS-Erika Espinoza (SO)/Ortega OF-Ortega OF-Fajardo OF-Yasmine Rojas (SR) The Lady Eagles began to make baby steps last season with Albert Enriquez coming in as the new head coach, as the program posted double digit victories for the first time since 2004. But the success in the preseason couldn’t carry over to the tough Suburban League slate where Glenn, although much more competitive than in recent years, still struggled. “As a coach, I really don’t count the preseason games,” Enriquez said. “We played some pretty bad teams that kind of hindered us going into league. We were looking to stay out of the basement. I think we [finished] where I thought we would be at with a freshman pitcher and a new coach coming in.” He says the team is in a better position this year than it was at this point last year and it starts with his daughter Destiny, a sophomore who surprised a lot of people last season in the circle. Some of her highlights were limiting Cerritos to three runs at home, holding Mayfair to five runs on the road and keeping her team in the game at La Mirada before losing 1-0. She received a lot of praise from the opposing league coaches last season and should be even better this season. “I think she has grown more mentality wise,” Enriquez said of his daughter. “She was a little timid last year. Her presence is a lot more intimidating on the mound.” Junior Jackie Mojica moves from third to second and will platoon with senior Valeria Ortega, who was the team’s shortstop last season. Sophomore Erika Espinoza is a transfer from Gahr while Briana Ruiz returns to Glenn after a two-year absence. She was the starting catcher as a freshman. Junior Destiny Hindman also returns after starting as a freshman. Junior Aiyana Ramirez, sophomore Ashley Hernandez and freshman Destiny Rangel are the other new varsity members. “I think this is the year we’re going to push these girls to the limit,” Albert Enriquez said. “This is definitely the year. The Lady Lancers also face Valley Christian at the end of the season. “That’s a tough [schedule] but you want to face those better teams to see where you really are; to see where you stand,” Aguirre said. “We’re up for the challenge.”

But distractions were the name of the game last season for longtime head coach Luis Lavayen. Whitney missed the playoffs for the third time under his watch despite having, what he called, the best team the school has had in a long time The Lady Wildcats will once again have junior pitcher Nicole Waldecker in the circle and will be throwing to sophomore Jenna Llamas, both of whom were once Cerritos Girls Softball Association All-Stars. Llamas moves from third base which will be occupied by freshman Karen Kaur, when she’s not pitching. Senior shortstop Kaya Quarles moves one spot over from her left. Freshman Ashley Iseri, the younger sister of Cerritos star pitcher Jennifer, is another former CGSA all-star and will hold down first base. The outfield is very inexperienced with two freshmen and a sophomore. “Not having any [returning] outfielders is what scares me,” Lavayen said. “We’re hoping to do okay. I really believe we’re going to do okay. Last year was the worst and yet I had the best team.” Senior Ann Munoz, sophomore Sabrina Dagoc and freshman Jessica Andres are the other varsity newcomers.
