MEMBERS of the Annual Cancer Free Fashion Show, along with Kaiser Staff and care givers, at the 2019 Together We Care event. BY TAMMYE MCDUFF Helen Keller once said, “Although life is full of suffering, it is also full of the overcoming it.” The annual cancer survivor celebration, hosted by Kaiser Permanente at their Bellflower Medical Offices, reflected Helen Keller’s statement. The fiesta themed celebration was held this past June 28 for cancer survivors, caregivers, and family members as they gathered together to celebrate survivorship, showing that life after cancer can be healthy, fulfilling and meaningful. The event was open to past and present Kaiser Permanente patients, community residents, physicians, employees and volunteers. Timea Gaines is not only the Communications Specialist for Kaiser Permanente she is also a cancer survivor. “In 2015 I was diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer. It is not hereditary and I was the first in my family to have to deal with cancer. As you can imagine it was a frightening journey, but I am so grateful for the support I had.” Before moving to Southern California, Kaiser was her cancer care team in the Mid-Atlantic Region, when she moved to California, she went to work for Kaiser. “I couldn’t be happier to be here and continue to support the organization, I am cancer free and thriving.” Dozens of exhibitors were present with one booth dedicated to knitting and crochet classes. Dhaneya Kumaraswamy runs the Image of Hope Center at South Bay Medical. Kumaraswamy says knitting is therapeutic and relaxing, “patients are provided

APOLLO 11 Mission Control in 1969. The Columbia Memorial Space Center will celebrate the entire month of July with special events beginning July 13.

BY TAMMYE MCDUFF On July 20, 1969, the first words, as we mere mortals know it, were spoken on the moon, “it’s one small step for man … one giant leap for mankind” and thus Neil Alden Armstrong placed his boot on the surface of the moon. Apollo 11 was the first manned mission to land on the Moon. The first steps by humans on another planetary body were taken by Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin. Apollo 11

achieved its primary mission - to perform a manned lunar landing and return safely to Earth, paving the way for the Apollo lunar landing missions to follow. This summer there are many remembrances that will be held along with several documentaries that will be made public, but here in Southern California, in the city of Downey is where Apollo 11 was born. Gone are the acres of buildings and secret government programs, but in their place

Hawaiian Gardens Planning Commissioner Anna Rodriguez, who was appointed by current City Mayor Myra Maravilla, evidently does not think very highly of the City’s senior population. During public comment at a Hawaiian Gardens City Anna Rodriguez Council meeting, Rodriguez was heard on video wanting to cut from the City budget what she termed “excessive senior programs” and give all the money to the City’s youth programs. “No offense to the senior citizens, I see a lot of programs that I don't feel that there should be, its excessive.” As a planning commissioner, Rodriguez receives a stipend every month from the City, while also traveling to conventions, going to the pricey Contract Cities Convention in Palm Desert this past May. Rodriguez went on to say, “no offense to our senior citizens but I feel like some of the programs and events or trips they go on are excessive.” There are a small number of senior programs that is offered by the City, including arts and crafts, billiards, bingo, and Zumba. Others can be termed as activities occurring at the City’s Recreation Center such as cupcake decorating and free computer use. The City also runs a well-attended Golden Age Senior Club, Sunshine club, and delivers 1,540 meals each month to Hawaiian Gardens seniors. Two or three excursions are offered each month to places such as the Getty Museum and Pala Casino and average 30 participants on each trip. Still, the number of programs and excursions caused Rodriguez concern, indicating that “she wanted to see more funds spent on our youth.” Then Rodriguez said something that caused everyone in the room to gasp. “Yes, I would like to see more of [the money] geared towards our youth because eventually we're all going to pass away anyway.”

ARRESTS MADE BY LAKEWOOD SHERIFFS FOR ILLEGAL FIREWORKS

MONTEBELLO UNIFIED ASSISTANT SUPERINTENDENT INTERFERED IN HIRING PROCESS FOR HIS LIVE-IN HUSBAND BY BRIAN HEWS Hews Media Group-Los Cerritos Community News has learned that the Montebello Unified School District Personnel Commission has found that MUSD Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources Dr. Angel Gallardo improperly interfered to get his live-in husband appointed to a job within the district. The Commission reviewed evidence and interviewed several witnesses under sworn testimony to come to its conclusion of Gallardo’s corrupt attempt to secure the MUSD’s classified position of Attendance Officer for his husband. According to Transparent California, the Attendance Officer earns over $71,000 annually in total pay. The interference by Gallardo was of such magnitude that it could cost him his job. Gallardo did not leave any area untouched, interfering at every level of the process to try and get his husband hired, starting with choosing the two members of the panel who would be conducting the interviews. Gallardo had no power under MUSD policies to choose the interviewers, and even if he did he would be forced to re-

cuse himself since one of the candidates was his husband. Witnesses testified that Gallardo then tried to intimidate everyone involved by interjecting himself into the examination scoring portion of the interview telling one of the panel members that “he really wanted his husband to have a job…. really wanted to bring him into the district…. and was going to find a way to get him in. Once again, Gallardo did not have the authority to properly interject, only members of the Personnel Commission staff have that power. Lastly, he attempted to get the scores of the entire interview process thrown out after his husband miserably failed the test. Two of the interviewers said that the husband “did not possess the necessary skills to be an effective employee, had poor English skills, dressed inappropriately, mumbled throughout the interview, and just plain presented poorly." They also indicated that the husband failed the oral part of the exam by scoring below 70%. Apparently Gallardo’s husband was hired for some period of time as the documents show that the Commission ordered that no further payroll checks be issued.

As temperatures continue to rise, vector control experts stress the need for the public to take preventative steps against mosquitoes. West Nile virus is a mosquito-transmitted disease that can cause debilitating illness and death to humans as well as birds, horses and other wildlife. Twenty percent of infected people will exhibit flu-like symptoms, and one in 150 people infected will require hospitalization. There is currently no cure or vaccine for the virus. The Greater Los Angeles Vector Control District (GLACVCD), a local government and public health agency dedicated to reducing populations of public health vectors and preventing human infection associated with mosquito-transmitted diseases, has issued the following tips to stay safe. • Eliminate standing water around the home. It takes as little as five days for mosquito eggs to hatch into biting adults. • Many children play sports or are outdoors from late afternoon to the evening hours, when mosquitoes are most active. Anyone outside during these hours should wear long-sleeved shirts and pants and use insect repellent containing DEET, Picaridin and oil of lemon eucalyptus. • To help West Nile Virus surveillance and control efforts, report dead birds at westnile.ca.gov. For more information, call GLACVCD at (562) 944-9656 or visit glacvcd.org.

Discover if you have the willingness, ability and resources to take on the challenge of helping a child in need. After being diagnosed with leukemia from radiation, a young girl named Sadako was told to fold origami paper cranes in the hope of making a thousand of them. She was inspired to do so by the Japanese legend that one who created a thousand origami cranes would be granted a wish. Her wish was simply to live through her disease. In retelling her story, it is said she only managed to fold only 644 cranes before she died. Her friends and family helped finish her dream by folding the rest of the cranes, which were buried with Sadako.

LIBERTY UTILITIES LOWER RATES FOR SOCAL CUSTOMERS BY TAMMYE MCDUFF

Liberty Utilities recently filed a letter with the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) to lower water rates by approximately 2.32 percent. Liberty serves customers in the communities of Artesia, Bellflower, Compton, Lynwood, Norwalk, Santa Fe Springs, and parts of unincorporated Los Angeles. The new rates, which were implemented on July 1, 2019, reflects the net effect of Liberty’s lower interest rate on debt. The average residential customer in the Los Angeles areas served by Liberty uses approximately 21.1 CCF (15,782 gallons) of water during a twomonth billing period. “We are pleased to share that local water rates will be decreasing by more than two percent,” said Alison Vai, Program Manager, Communications and Media Relations, for Liberty Utilities Apple Valley and Park Water. Effective July 2018, Liberty Utilities lowered rates by four percent in Los Angeles areas to ensure the federal corporate tax savings were passed through to customers. Liberty Utilities Co. owns and operates regulated water, wastewater, natural gas and electric transmission and distribution utilities in 12 states, including Arizona, Arkansas, California, Georgia, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Massachusetts, Missouri, New Hampshire, Oklahoma and Texas, delivering services to approximately 783,000 customers across the United States.

t would only be fitting that in travel softball, the travel part plays a huge role. It’s not just travelling from one tournament to another to play for a championship, as there is another component of travelling that comes into play. More and more teams are bringing in players that live outside the immediate area of where she lives, or that live beyond a two-hour drive. In fact, there have been players that will leave their own state to play for a more desirable club in another state. It’s what has made the sport grow and grow, among other things, year after year. That’s where Kieren Lopez and the Artesia Punishers 18 Gold team come into play. Lopez is a second baseman for Frontier High in Bakersfield but an outfielder or utility player for the Punishers. Her journey to the Punishers, no pun intended, is similar to others who have decided to test the market and venture away from their home base. Lopez’ path to the Punishers began when she played against the younger Punishers teams in a friendly at Artesia Park while playing for the Bustos Elite 12-Under team out of Porterville. Lopez noticed how much more competitive they were from the teams she had played on and began to have thoughts of the Punish-

When I was older and I wanted to find a team that was really good and I knew that could get me to where I wanted to go, I knew that the Punishers would be the place to be. When Lopez was 15 years old, she wanted to find a more competitive team from Los Angeles. She and her mother, Serena, remembered the Punishers and knew they had a good 18-Under team and called Punishers head coach Bob Medina. “I was full of questions and thought I took up most of his time, Serena Lopez remembered. “But then I came to find out that he had a lot more to say than I did. He’s just a friendly guy and getting to talk to him, I got to know him on a personal basis that day. I was pretty much sold that first conversation I had with him. Having players come to the Punishers who don’t live in the Southland wasn’t

Continued from page 8 new to Medina. In 2007, when the Punishers won the Amateur Softball Association National Championship, one of their players, Ali Adelman, was a pitcher from San Diego. And more recently, they have had Trinity Seguritan, who hails from Waialua, Hawai’i. “When they come to us for tryouts or stuff like that geographically, I always explain to them what it consists of, and we’ll make some exceptions to them,” Medina said. “In the past, we’ve had a lot of San Diego kids; we’re constantly getting people from San Diego, Bakersfield, San Bernardino, and Kieren comes to us from Bakersfield. We get kids who are very dedicated…and they take on the challenge. I hope that they feel that we fulfill their obligation.” When Kieren Lopez was younger, she was recommended to the Punishers by another coach, Joe Castillo of the Bustos Elite, and when she was 15, she knew that she wasn’t going to play travel softball in the Bakersfield area as most of the girls go their separate ways, according to Serena. “I wanted to play for a team that was more competitive and getting recruited was the main goal,” Kieren Lopez said. “I knew if I stayed in Bakersfield, it would be less likely for me to get recruited to a school I wanted to go to rather than coming here with the Punishers.” Kieren Lopez tried out with five other teams but knew the Punishers were the one that felt like home and was immediately welcomed when she became a member of the Punishers and began hitting in groups at Medina’s business, VIP Batting. “Honestly, when we came into it, we thought it was going to be very frustrating A0424-Used Oil (Cerritos) 9/23/05 and setting ourselves up for maybe it not

happening,” Serena Lopez said. “Coming into it, I’m growing just as any other older adult with a child that’s getting into something like travel. I was oblivious and everything was explained to me. “We had a sit-down meeting and it was very casual,” she continued. “But Bobby explained quite a few things that I would run into, like…the place I can find the best food. It just feels like home every time I come through here.” “Someone far away has to already show their commitment, number one, 100 percent,” Medina said. “And they’re going to have to come to our practices. They’re going to have to come to our workouts, our friendlies, different things that we have. They’re going to have to come and show their commitment to the team because it’s easier to quit than it is to go forward, and I always tell the kids that.” On a good day, the Lopez contingent can get to Artesia in two hours, 10 minutes and on a regular day, two and half to three hours. At worst, it takes the Lopez family over four hours to get from Kern County to Artesia. In fact, the latest they would get back to their home was 2:00 a.m., which came after a practice at VIP and after talking to Medina. Then, Kieren Lopez had to go to school a few hours later. When she can’t make it to Artesia for a practice or a game, Kieren Lopez goes to a workout place Monday-Thursday in her area. A batting cage was also installed in her backyard and she would send Medina a video of her hitting about once a month. She says she always knew she could ask him questions through email. “Sometimes, my biggest challenge is at the drop of the hat, I’ll have a practice the next day,” Medina said. “I’ve gotten to the point where some of the kids have been very loyal and they understand our system; they know what’s going on. I’ll 1:33 PM Page 1 tell them to just stay home and not to

worry about coming in. After they know our system, I believe it’s softball 101.” Medina has never had a player from outside Southern California begin the season in September and leave at any point because of the long distance. But he has turned down players from Texas and last year, from Illinois to pitch in the Premier Girls Fastpitch National Championships. Players who come from long distances to play for the Punishers but can’t make it for every practice or friendly still workout at home and keep in contact with Medina when they can’t make it to Southern California. They will even send in videos of their workouts. “She works so hard,” Medina said. “She’s a very hard worker. She works so hard out in the field, on the field, at bat every single time. And then not only that, the parent’s dedication because it really means a lot. If you don’t have the parent’s dedication, you don’t have the kid’s dedication.” An icing on the cake for Kieren Lopez was when she got a scholarship to Chaminade University in Hawai’i around the end of this past April or beginning of May. She recalls that Chaminade was the school she wanted from the beginning. “It was amazing to find out that I could actually go there. I felt like everything just came together and that it was going to work out. I was so excited.” “I was grateful for a lot of things,” Serena Lopez said. “I was grateful for her and her dedication. I was grateful for knowing my coach that led us here. I was grateful for getting to know Bobby and [assistant coach] Ed [Blanck] and the organization. Deann [Medina] is great; she does what she needs to do to get the paperwork going and get the parents going. If anyone would dream it for their kid, this is it.” Kieren Lopez has less than month with the Punishers before she heads off

to college and says she wouldn’t change a thing from the past three years, citing she has learned something new with every obstacle that has come her way. “I feel like it has built me as a player and as a person,” she said. “Living so far away, when I was on the team as a sophomore I was playing with a bunch of older girls and that obstacle, I got to become comfortable playing with older girls, and I learned from them. Coming into this year, and I’m older, I have more confidence now.” “I wouldn’t have come here if I didn’t know that coach Bobby would help me, and he did,” she later continued. “Because, the team was different from when I was a sophomore to now. It’s all completely new girls but I always wanted to come back to play for him.” “I believe that we fulfill our obligation every year getting them scholarships and going to college” Medina said. “It’s really about their kids, so that’s kind of what we do. In the end, the kids stick around, and they stay through the end. Now, we do have the option of letting them go because of certain issues. But, other than that, I can’t remember anybody that has quit because it’s too far.” But this won’t be the last time you’ll hear from the Lopez family from Bakersfield. Serena Lopez added that she has two younger girls and ‘hands down, I would bring them here and nowhere else’. She then said that she would hope that Medina never retires and accepts them. “I always tell people, I can’t walk up today and say, ‘you have to respect me because I have whatever, whatever’,” Medina said. “I always tell the kids respect is earned from day one all the way through. And if anybody knows who I am, I never change my way. I’m out here trying to help kids.”

CERRITOS COLLEGE students Francisca Lezama Conde and Rachael Zuniga-De La Rosa were recognized for winning the "Live Your Dream" Scholarship from the Soroptimist International of Cerritos-Artesia at the Cerritos College Board of Trustees meeting BY TAMMYE MCDUFF Soroptimist's ‘Live Your Dream Award’ program is a unique education grant for women who provide the primary financial support for their families. This Award affords young women the resources they need to improve their education, skills and employment prospects. At the Cerritos College Board meeting this past June, five students from the college were recognized in a special presentation by Soroptimist International of Cerritos-Artesia President Lola Rizkallah and Diana Needham. The scholarship is awarded to women who are head of household, motivated to achieve their educational and career goals, and have met and overcome challenges. This year’s first place recipient was Fran-

cisca Lezama Conde and placing second was Rachael Zuniga-De La Rosa. Special acknowledgment went to Andrea Aceves, Sarah Machai and Comilla Idrees. Every year, Soroptimist distributes more than $2 million in education grants to about 1,500 women all over the world. Over half of the Live Your Dream Awards recipients are survivors of domestic violence, trafficking or sexual assault. Nearly all of the women and families have overcome enormous obstacles including poverty, teen pregnancy, and drug or alcohol addiction. Live Your Dream Awards recipients may use the cash award to offset any costs associated with their efforts to attain higher education, such as books, childcare, tuition and transportation.
