he Cerritos High School auditorium was the scene of the 39th Annual Cerritos Junior Miss Competition Feb. 21 with 18 girls representing Cerritos, Whitney and Gahr High Schools competing for the coveted title that was won by Cerritos High’s Hillary Brown.

The girls had previously been interviewed and their scholastic records looked at. All that was left was how they expressed themselves, the talent and fitness part of the competition. The program opened with the girls doing a dance and physical routine on the stage. The audience clapped and cheered as their favorite rotated to the front of the stage, especially during the jump rope sequence. The talent portion of the program included various ethnic dances, a song and a piano player.

t was an event that Fairfax Principal Ed Zubiate described as a big step in the life of the school’s Basketball Center and former Artesia High basketball star Renardo Sidney, Jr. who announced his commitment attend USC next fall at Press Conference Feb. 22 in the school’s gymnasium. “I wish him well. He has a great career ahead of him.”

He concluded by saying, “We’re talking about a teenager. Kids don’t just play basketball. It’s about their education and about families coming together” Covering the Press Conference were representatives from the major media in the Greater Los Angeles area that included television and newspapers. Renardo moved from Mississippi to Southern California with is family in 2006, where he enrolled at Artesia High School, then known for its basketball prowness. Almost immediately he attracted the attention of many, including the New York Times and the Washington Post, both, which ran articles describing his talent and future basketball stardom.

he Cerritos City Council met in special session Feb. 19 to discuss the American Recovery Reinvestment Act (Stimulus] with Congresswoman Linda Sanchez and what it means to Cerritos.

According to Rep. Sanchez passage of the act means some good news for Cerritos. The city should receive approximately $500,000 in infrastructure money. “I understand the city has projects ready to go,” she said.

“Hopefully, the money will come quickly.”

She said some cities had expressed concern about the money trickling down to them from the state to the local level.

“What makes this difficult,” she stated, “if there is to much of a delay, California can lose some of this money.”

Reviewing federal grants the city has received she said “We’ve allocated more than $1 million for the COW buses that run on natural gas. She said for the fiscal year 2009 budget, which Congress is in the process of finalizing, there is a request from Cerritos for $750,000 for solar panels for the senior housing project and the sheriff station. She said, “We’ll try and get you funding for some of your top priority projects.”

Sanchez announced she has accepted a seat on the House Ways and Means Committee, which she described as a small but powerful committee. For example, it has jurisdiction over tax cuts that are called for in the stimulus bill as well as Health Care and Health Reform and Social Security. She is also on the Trade Subcommittee that will be looking at the existing trade agreements that are in place and seeing if they are actually beneficial to the country or if they need restructuring.

The latter would be for high tech computers in the 911 system.

A new request is for funding for a “Green” Supplemental Power System at the Cerritos Library at a cost of $360,000 that includes replacement of 150 desktop computers to reduce energy consumption and provide more efficient services to Library patrons. He said the city was told to compile a wish list in order of its priority and hopefully funding will be approved for some of them.

“The projects we are really interested in the “Solar” and “Go Green” areas which we understand money in those categories is available. He said the solar system in the city hall is 30 years old and needs to be replaced with newer solar technology.

The swimming pool at Cerritos Park East is operating on 27-year-old solar technology and should be replaced with a new Environmental Control System that will reduce energy usage by 70 percent.

The Liberty Park Shelter, scheduled to be replaced next year, will be lit by solar energy as well as the rest rooms. “We are also looking at other projects as well.

These are our top priorities,” he stated.

Councilman Joseph Cho , in addressing Rep. Sanchez, said, “I really appreciate your efforts in behalf of the City and to fund some of our projects.” On another topic he asked Gallucci to clarify the ownership of the Del Amo Bridge, which is on the lower end of the priority list.

Glaucci said the present alignment of the bridge puts it in Cerritos, However, if it was widened, ownership would be shared by Cerritos, Los Angeles County, Lakewood and La Palma with a slice in Cypress.

Rep. Sanchez said if the money for the bridge were forthcoming, each city would be allotted a certain amount of funding as their share for the bridge’s realignment.

Cerritos share would be $525,000.

The City Manager said one of the things they were looking at was the needs of all the city buildings. Expansion of the children’s area in the library is just one. It is one of the smallest areas in the library and has one of the largest usages. He said the expansion was the same as the sheriff station, we look at the needs and then enlarge it.

Mayor Pro Tem Bruce Barrows said one of the areas the council was concerned with is the city’s operating costs and how they can be reduced.

Councilmember Laura Lee questioned the realignment of the Del Amo Bridge and the $17 million cost. Do the other cities have to get their congress members on board? Gallucci said Lakewood asked to be lead construction. All we did was take the lead and asked for the money.

Lee also asked about the replacement of the city hall’s solar system. Will the benefits be expanded? Currently the system provides the buildings with its hot water and air conditioning. He said hopefully the benefits would expand. He added, whether we receive the grant or not, the upgrading will be coming before the council because the building and system are 30 years old.

Councilmember Carol Chen noted that the stimulus bill allocated approximately $8 million along with restrictions on how the money can be used to the state. Does that mean the money received by the city precludes additional funds coming to Cerritos?

Rep. Sanchez said the House bill was written so money would go to local governments. Unfortunately, the Senate version took that away, giving the state’s responsibility for allocating to the cities.

The bill allocates money to the city’s, per a formula, for infrastructure projects.

The states will allocate funding for other projects, which the cities can apply for.

She said there was a possibility Cerritos can receive a lot more money from the stimulus package.

Rep. Sanchez said while she felt California could have been allocated more

money, considering it is one of the largest states in the union, than it is slated to receive, overall she thought the stimulus bill was a good one and will stop the downward slide of the economy and create jobs.

Tom Primosch 1941 -2009 Tom Primosch completed his final marathon and it was a difficult obstacle path of cancer that brought him to the end point. Tired, but peaceful, he said his final farewell Monday, February 23rd in hospice care at the Little Sisters of the Poor Home for the Aged in San Pedro.

Tom and Dixie Primosch moved to Cerritos in 1972 and raised two sons.

He is survived by his wife, son Tommy, daughter-in-law Sandra and grandchildren: Allison, and twins Tyler and Zoe who reside in San Marcos. Son Ryan resides in Lakewood and is engaged to Cathy Fix. His brother Bill and wife Mary Jo reside in Bethesda, Md. Tom’s two sisters: Sister Imelda and Sister Antonette are Little Sisters in Homes for the Aged in the Philippines and in Bangalore, India.

Fondly remembered by his Army buddies as “Ranger Tom” he proudly served as a U.S. Army Ranger (special operations), five years in Okinawa, Germany and special deployment in the Vietnam War as a Captain.

Many remember Tom as an avid jogger who loved the long runs around Cerritos and neighboring cities. He jokingly would tell friends that he came in

first in half marathons—failing to mention that he was the only one running in that age group!

Tom was a founding (Charter) member of the Cerritos Republican Club. He was retired from Fluor Corporation after 30 years employment where he served in Project Management. After retirement he enrolled in Cerritos College Woodworking classes. He enjoyed sharing his many projects of various cabinets and tables that he uniquely designed and proudly built at the college and in his home garage. He proudly displayed several projects at the Del Mar Fair and received a second place ribbon for unique woodworking design.

  There was this young girl who came to America more than five decades ago. She lived her early years in the war-torn country of the Philippines. She learned that the Americans helped liberate her country from the oppressions of the enemy during World War II. The men in her early life – her father, both grandfathers and three uncles – were brave and gallant soldiers.

They fought side-by-side with the Americans until Bataan fell to the enemies. They all suffered greatly with the Americans in the infamous Bataan Death March and as prisoners of war.

After the War, this young girl’s dad had the great opportunity to join the United States Army. After fighting and serving in the Korean War, where he was missing in action for a while, he was able to bring this young girl and the rest of his growing family to America.

This girl, Ester, learned to love her new country with a great passion. She wanted to become an American in the best essence of the word. She wanted someday to give back to her new country by being educated, involved and a caring citizen. This passion is the legacy that I taught my children, especially Mark, who I detected early has a special gift for service.

We, as a family, want to give back to America and to our beloved City of Cerritos.

My husband Rudy and I came to Cerritos in 1972 with our four young children. Mark was a toddler then. He is a product of our ABC School District. He learned early in life about activism.

He was concerned about youth gangs in our neighborhood and fought peer pressure to join one. He searched for solutions and thus founded Club Kaibigan (means “Friends”). It is a Filipino cultural club that welcomes all students to join. After 25 years, it is still going strong, promoting good will and understanding among students of all backgrounds at Whitney High.

Mark went on to UCLA where he was elected Student Body President. He attended the University of Chicago for his Master’s in Public Policy. He interned in Washington, D.C. at the Department of Justice. He worked for the City of Long Beach for the City Manager. There he learned a great deal about city governance. At our state level, Mark served three Assembly Speakers. Presently, he is the District Director for our State Senator. Last but not least, he has the great honor of serving you on the ABC School District Board for the past seven years.

Yes, I am proud of my hard working son, Mark Pulido. I respectfully ask for your support. I truly believe that he has earned your vote to allow him to serve you and our City of Cerritos.

He is truly the right choice to be your next Councilmember. He is “home grown” with the right mind and heart. The one we can consider our very own. I thank you very much.

Flower St., Suite 4210, Los Angeles CA 90071. (This is the same Jim Freeman (a political consultant) that was hired by members of the City Council over a year ago to send out the Tank Farm mailer.) The mailing address for this committee is also the same address as David Gould Company, another political consultant.

HOA Confusing Endorsements Dear Editor, The HOA has recently posted a message on its web site saying that they have endorsed two candidates for the upcoming Cerritos City Council race: Chris Fuentes and Carol Chen. Chris Fuentes is currently against the Cuesta Villas project. Since the HOA's #1 objective is to kill the Cuesta Villas project, their endorsement of Chris Fuentes is natural.

I was surprised, though, that they chose to also endorse Carol Chen, so I carefully read their endorsement statement to find out their reason.

Development of the office building and related improvements by Transpacific Development Company (TDC) are underway on a 3.87-acre parcel on the southeast corner of Towne Center Drive and Center Court Drive. Upon completion, the proposed office building will be the seventh building developed by TDC in the Cerritos Towne Center, and will provide approximately 91,334 square feet of commercial office space.

It is anticipated that the project will create approximately 350 new jobs in the City and provide an estimated $77 million of additional revenue for the City/Redevelopment Agency. (Ground and participation rents will result in $70 million for the City’s General Fund, and tax increment revenue will provide $7 million for the Redevelopment Agency.)

Atkinson, Andelson, Loya, Ruud & Romo, a law firm currently based in Cerritos, will lease 60 percent of the property, and will relocate its headquarters to the new building when it is completed.

Designed by John Spohrer of Archisystems International, the building will feature an artistic dome structure accented with a sculpture by artist Lyle London called “Undulating Spire.”

The building is contemporary in design and includes decorative finish materials, including colored glass and Alucobond material. A combination of circular and rectilinear shapes form the building’s exterior façades.

The main pedestrian entrances will be distinguished by arched stainless steel canopies that are intended to echo the materials and shapes used in the design of the building.

Construction is scheduled to be completed by fall 2009.

American Tire Depot has taken over a 71,712-square-foot warehouse at 16201 Commerce Way. The company will warehouse automotive and light truck tires and wheels. In addition, the building’s offices will house the accounting, executive and wholesale sales staff.

Stage Call Corporation, located at 14100 Park Place, has leased a 40,000 square foot building for the storage and staging of theatre production sets and props.

Fresh & Easy under construction in Cerritos A Fresh & Easy supermarket is under construction at the southeast corner of Artesia Boulevard and Carmenita Road in Cerritos. The building’s exterior is currently being remodeled, and interior improvements will soon be underway.

Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market is a company of Tesco, the United Kingdom’s largest retailer. The store provides fresh, highquality, wholesome food at budget prices.

Hearing loss & Heart Disease: What’s the connection?

A cardiovascular study reported that individuals between age 52 and 97, with a history of myocardial infarction (MI), are more likely to have “impaired cochlear function” – hearing loss. The study was conducted on 1600 subjects (41% men)

by Dr. Peter Torre III, at the University of Wisconsin. The findings were presented at the American Heart Association’s annual Cardiovascular Disease and Epidemiology Prevention conference. One interesting note, more than 50% were women and that begs the question: why are more women not being tested for hearing loss? It used to be that men were most likely to be affected by a noise-induced hearing loss, but as more women entered the work force that is no longer the case. Renardo was asked what he wanted. He replied he was just trying to go to college.

“I’m very excited about attending USC next fall.” Asked if the NBA had okayed his being drafted, would he still have opted for college? He answered, “Yes. I would not have entered the draft.” He added, he has committed to going to USC, even though he cannot sign until April 8.

Fairfax Basketball Coach Harvey Kitani described the last few months as being stressful for Renardo and his teammates as they near graduation and were trying to decide on which college to attend. “Today, that stress has gone away for Renardo with his announced commitment to attend USC in the fall.

fore we look back onto this year’s election for two open 4-year term seats let me introduce myself for the readers who yet know me. My name is Michael Ryan Udomratsak, age 19. I have lived here in Cerritos my whole life and enjoy its many resources and diverse community. Graduating from Cerritos High in 2007 I am continuing my education at Cerritos College with a major in Administration of Justice. My pursuits of this campaign are less questionable than some if not all. My goal is simple, my aim is locked, and myself is transparent to all. I begun my campaign rather late to my other neighbors but I proceeded with my purpose to not only vote in this year’s municipal election but take part as a candidate as well.

This journey has been no easy road for the one less taken usually is. Working with under a thousand dollars, limited resources, and discouraging odds I hope you will hear my message. Running for council I hope to bring my motto, “Bridging the Gap” to life. Our city is like a well oiled machine that needs its gasoline. A city without its community and council cooperating fails.

Times are getting hard, that is no lie. But we cannot let this despair us from our efforts. Simple steps as polling decisions in construction, funding, etc. will go a long way. Gahr Stuns Top Ranked Diamond Ranch Behind Furious Fourth Quarter Rally, Advances To Semifinals

By Loren Kopff POMONA-Gahr boys basketball head coach Bob Becker confessed he has never felt better after a win than he did this past Tuesday night in a California Interscholastic Federation-Southern Section Division III-A quarterfinal game at Diamond Ranch.

The Gladiators trailed by as many as 16 points midway through the third quarter but outscored the Panthers 20-9 in the fourth quarter to shock the top ranked and top seeded Panthers on the road 63-62.

Gahr will now host fourth ranked and fourth seeded Golden Valley tonight in a semifinal game most likely to be played at Cerritos. It will be Gahr's first trip to the semis since the 1998-1999 season when it advanced all the way to the finals. The Gladiators held the lead for a total of 2:44 but the most important lead came with 1:01 remaining when senior Devin Golston sank a crucial free throw. It was his ninth point of the stanza and he finished with a teamleading 25 points and 10 rebounds.

"We've been there before," Becker said. "We kept our composure and the kids stayed positive. They just never gave up.

To me, it's just a sign of what kind of kids we have. We have kids that are never going to give up regardless of the score. They're going to play hard all the way through."

Gahr (17-14) was right with the Panthers, coached by former Artesia mentor Loren Grover, for the first four minutes of the game before going ice cold. Over the next 7:20, the eighth ranked and eighth seeded team in the division missed 14 straight shots from the field and scored just six points from the charity stripe. Diamond Ranch took advantage of the poor shooting to forge a 28-14 lead and was seemingly on its way to a rout. But the youth of Gahr's lineup which includes sophomores Jarion Henry, Davon Potts and Javonte Sales along

with Golston, senior Gipson Lyles and junior Cameron bell wouldn't let the team give up that easy in front of a very hostile crowd. Although the visitors trailed 36-24 at the half behind a dozen points from Garrett Johnson, who is headed to Fresno State and eight more by future Santa Clara star Chris Cunningham, and again by 10 points after three quarters, Gahr's defense picked it up at the right time over the final eight minutes.

"We wanted to contain [Garrett Johnson]," Becker said. "I think [Johnson] is a great player. We guarded him with a smaller guard to stay in front and keep him from penetrating the basket. He's much better than he looked tonight because we did a good job on him."

Golston scored the first two baskets of the fourth quarter to bring the Gladiators to within six points. The Diamond Ranch lead quickly went to 10 with under seven minutes to play but Henry scored four straight points, making it 59-56 with 4:15 left to play. The Panthers would hurt themselves at the free throw line, connecting on three of eight, all in the second half and after Cunningham was true on one of two free shots with 3:54 remaining, Gahr went on a 6-0 run. Golston tied the game on an ally oop pass from Lyles with 3:10 left, then took the lead with 1:49 remaining on a Lyles basket. Johnson would tie the game 33 seconds later but 15 ticks after that, Golston nailed the game winner.

The Gladiators shot 48 percent from the field in the second half while Diamond Ranch, which was close to 46 percent from the field in the first half, managed to connect on 11 fields out of 29 attempts in the second half. Lyles scored a dozen points, had five rebounds, three steals and two assists while Henry grabbed eight rebounds.

Artesia Sees Nothing Attractive in First Round Playoff Loss to Belles

By Loren Kopff INGLEWOOD-In any other season before the one that just concluded for the Artesia girls basketball team, an 8-15 team that finished in fifth place in its league would not advance to the California Interscholastic Federation-Southern Section playoffs.

Normally, you would need at least a .500 record to apply for an at-large berth if one didn't finish in the top three, or in Artesia's case, the top four in its league.

But Amanda Scott, through the help of athletic director Suzanne Murphy who did apply for an at-large berth, was given the opportunity to play in the postseason.

Scott, the first-year head coach who took over for Murphy in mid December, had her team go up against St. Mary's Academy, the fourth ranked and fourth seeded team in III-A last Thursday night and although the game was put away late in the first half, Scott is just amazed to see how far the Pioneers have come this past season.

"It was absolutely amazing," Scott said.

"To come in when they were 0-6 and just to see the progression they made, especially in the last couple of weeks...they really

peaked. For us to get a chance to play [in the playoffs] was really special for us.

"It was a lot easier of an adjustment than I thought it was going to be," Scott continued. "The girls were really accepting and ready to learn. I would tell all of my friends these girls had their eyes wide open and they were ready to learn."

Although Artesia fell to the Belles 8360, it had its chances to make the game more respectable when the hosts had two starters remain on the bench to begin the second half, due to foul trouble. In fact, the game featured 54 fouls between the two teams and St. Mary's Academy had four players foul out but had one role player after another step up and keep the Pioneers at a distance.

Artesia led by seven points late in the opening quarter on the only basket of the night for junior Alyssa Gasporra. But that would be the last field goal for the Pioneers in over three minutes. During that time, the Belles went on a 14-1 run to lead by eight.

Artesia would score eight points in the second quarter and connect on only one of nine shots from the field as the Belles led 39-24 at the half, a lead that would only get bigger in the third quarter.

"We kind of started to get a little flustered," Scott said. "As soon as we started to get flustered, we started playing their game and our defense went backwards. I tried to call a timeout and calm them down but at that point...it's tough. Basketball is a game of runs."

Senior Nikki Perkins scored 15 points and was six of six from the charity stripe in the first half and continued to virtually be a one person show in the second half.

She added 10 of Artesia's 16 third quarter points and finished the game with 34, five off her career-high she set on Dec. 27 against Alhambra. Perkins reached the 30-point mark five times this past season and never scored fewer than 13 points in

season is so long; we've played over 30 games. You get tired of each other and in some seasons, coaches walk away saying, 'I needed it to be over'. Not with this season and not with this team. I don't want it to ever end. Yeah, we've lost 14 games but it means nothing right now."

"She's a pure athlete," Scott said. "Just the effort she puts forth; she goes the whole game. Usually you get people who score what she did-25 points a game-and decide they're not going to play defense. But she does everything on defense and is just an all-around player."

Meanwhile, St. Mary's Academy was doing everything possible to ensure it's big lead wouldn't shrink. With Jazmonai Haynes and Talia Rayford both on the bench with four fouls accumulated in the first half, Raven Gammage and Ericka Mergerson picked up the slack and combined for 27 points in the second half. When it was all said and done, Gammage and Rayford led the hosts with 18 points each while Mergerson scored 17 and Destini French 13. The Belles were 28 of 62 from the field while the Pioneers, who scored more free throws than field goals, shot 31 percent from the field. Sophomore Joelle Daniel added eight points and four rebounds and senior Tanesha Polamalu contributed six more points and six more rebounds. While the Pioneers lose five seniors, Scott is already thinking about next season with a high number of soon-to-be juniors.

"We have a lot of athletes that come into this school, so you can expect a very hard-nosed defensive team," Scott said.

"Our offense is going to come from our defense. Our team is going to be very well conditioned and in shape."

Cerritos Sheriff 's Crime Summary February 16-22, 2009 Part I felony investigations were up last week when thirty-three were recorded over twenty-eight the week before.

Robberies, residential and commercial burglaries increased, vehicle burglaries remained the same, and vehicle thefts

declined. Calls for service were also up as 348 were handled over 314 the previous reporting period. The 2009 weekly average in calls for service is now 312. There were two robberies reported last week. A female victim was loading items in her vehicle while parked in the 17600 block of Palo Verde Avenue on Monday February 16 at 10:30 a.m. when she was approached by a gun-wielding male suspect.

After demanding and receiving money, the suspect fled on foot. On Sunday February 22 at 7:15 p.m. a similarly described suspect approached another female as she was inside of her open garage in the 17700 block of Palo Verde Avenue. Her purse was relinquished after the suspect produced a handgun. Five residential burglaries were logged last week. There was one incident the previous week. Two homes were entered via open/unlocked doors or windows, two garage padlocks were pried off, and one bedroom window was shattered. A granite countertop, cash, TVs, and MP3 players were stolen. The new 2009 weekly average in this category is now 2.8. We have previously mentioned that the residential burglar will try to enter the home with the least amount of effort.

One commercial burglary was investigated last week. Software items were taken from a closed business. Vehicle burglaries remained the same at six last week for the third consecutive week. High-volume commercial parking lots were involved in all six of the crimes. SUVs were targeted in four. One victim reported a GPS unit taken. Other items reported stolen included purses, tools, sunglasses, cell phones, and an air conditioner control.
