HMG-LCCN EXCLUSIVE: COMMERCE MAYOR JOHN SORIA, WHO IS ALSO A L.A. COUNTY SHERIFF’S EMPLOYEE, SPONSORS POT BUS TO LAS VEGAS WITH CONVICTED FELON BY BRIAN HEWS

COMMERCE MAYOR and L.A. County Sheriff's Department employee John Soria, (center), in front of his pot-sponsored City-leased bus to Las Vegas. With him is (left) disgraced former Bell Gardens City Councilman and convicted felon Mario Beltran, and 2020 candidate for Commerce City Council Carlos Maravilla. Note the pot leaf inside Maravilla's Teamster's logo.

John Soria is the Mayor of Commerce, a tiny town in Los Angeles county that has the biggest card room in the world, the Commerce Casino, along with one of the biggest high-end outlet malls in the country, the Citadel. As Mayor of a city that has huge investment opportunities around the Citadel and the Casino, one would think Soria would work hard to enhance the City’s image to attract much needed investment, which would increase tax revenue and give the City money to augment public services and increase public safety. But Soria has apparently chosen another route, a self-aggrandizing strategy that involves working with questionable can-

Bellflower Moving Forward with Homeless Shelter BY TAMMYE MCDUFF In September of this year the city of Bellflower entered into a settlement agreement, to do their part and provide shelter for homeless residents. This was in response to a 2018 Citizens Satisfaction Survey where the City Council learned that residents concerns over the growing homeless population were at the top of the list of serious problems. In this survey 79 percent of residents believed public funds should be expended to address the issue and 84 percent

believed that homelessness could and should be solved. The City approved a temporary shelter for up to fifty homeless individuals who must prove they are Bellfolwer residents, beginning January 2020. The new shelter will be located at 8833 Cedar Street. In an effort to inform residents of this process, a meeting was held November 13, 2019, and the plan was not well-received with many angry residents attending and voicing their concerns.

BY TAMMYE MCDUFF The annual reorganization of the Artesia City Council, which was held this past Dec. 9, took an unusual twist that only a small circle of people could have seen coming. After a tribute to outgoing Mayor Tony

Lima, the City Clerk opened the nominations for Mayor and Mayor pro tem. Councilwoman Melissa Ramoso nominated Mayor pro tem Miguel Canales but when the vote was called, Canales fell short, with only Ramoso voting to install

CERRITOS HIGH STUDENT CREATES SCHOOL-WIDE SEXUAL HARASSMENT AWARENES PROGRAM STAFF REPORT

Thrisha Senthilnathan , a junior at Cerritos high school, is currently working on her gold award for Girl Scouts, choosing an issue that is not commonly talked about in society, sexual harassment. The topic of sexual harassment is prevalent, but many high schools do not fully prepare students; Senthilnathan saw this void and created a program called “ WE RISE ABOVE.” The main goal of the program is to educate high school students about the realities of sexual harassment, what they can do to prevent it, how they can protect themselves in different and difficult circumstances, all while opening them up to the topic of sexual harassment, sexual violence, and abuse. Senthilnathan started by recruiting fellow high school students, freshmen through senior, as ambassadors. Within a few weeks she was ready to go, hosting a sexual harassment prevention and educational workshop in the CHS school library this past December 5. The event was a huge success, with over 460 CHS students attending; even ABCUSD President of the Board Olga Rios attended. The ambassadors erected booths and created informational posters and handouts for the students. Two companies attended, Z Ultimate self-defense studios and a sexual

harassment organization called Waymakers. Z Ultimate taught various self-defense moves while Waymakers helped the students learn about counseling and what resources are available for support. Waymakers also brought a former victim of sexual harassment to share her experience with fellow students. Prior to the workshop , Senthilnathan worked with her ambassadors during sexual harassment awareness week in October visiting more than ninety class rooms to hand out information about sexual harassment including posters, pens, and t-shirts, and to make them aware of the Dec. 5 workshop. Throughout the week, three sexual harassment education videos were played on the school’s broadcast system impacting over 3,000 students. CHS’s broadcast team assisted Senthilnathan with publicizing the campaign and workshop. Senthilnathan told HMG-LCCN that the WE RISE ABOVE program would not have been possible without the help of CHS Principal, Mr. Walker; Vice Principal Ms. Lin ; Broadcast Director, Mr. Rodriguez and all the wonderful CHS teachers, along with and Z Ultimate self-defense studios and Waymakers.

RAISING AWARENESS: from (l-r) standing: Paris Kang, Annette Hsieh, Thrisha Senthilnathan, ABCUSD President of the Board Dr Olga Rios, Jermayne Le, Christine Chiang, Francine Carillo, Nicole Zarate. From (l-r) sitting: Ryan Betonio, Khushi Patel, and Emily Villarreal.

CERRITOS MOTHER NEEDS FUNDS FOR AMPUTEE DAUGHTER’S WHEELCHAIR AFTER INSURANCE DENIAL FROM KABC & JESSICA DE NOVA The mother of a 17-year-old, double above-knee amputee has turned to a fundraiser to help her daughter get a new wheelchair after their insurance denied them multiple times over three years. Olivia Fernandes is a double leg amputee like her mom, Shawn Fernandes. Both have a rare genetic condition-popliteal pterygium syndrome. There was a 50% chance Shawn would pass it on to her children; her two older children don’t have the condition. Shawn and Olivia’s legs didn’t develop in the womb. “She had surgery every six weeks her first year of life,” Shawn said. Wheelchairs and prosthetic legs are a part of daily life for this mom and daughter, but Olivia outgrew a chair she got when she was 10 years old. Their insurance denied them an ultralight wheelchair for three years. The Fernandes family was told they couldn’t get coverage for the chair because Olivia had prosthetic legs. The mom and daughter said prosthetic legs aren’t for 24-hour, 7-day use. They can cause sores and fall off at any moment, landing Olivia in the hospital with injured

MAN STOPPED IN CERRITOS FLEES, FOUND CARRYING METHAMPHETAMINE BY BRIAN HEWS This past Saturday, December 7 at approximately 11:55 AM, Cerritos Sheriff Station deputies observed a driver failing to stop at a stop sign at the intersection of 162nd Street Elaine Ave. The deputies initiated a vehicle stop but after the driver stopped his vehicle, he got out of the car and ran dropping his sunglasses case in the process. Inside the case, deputies observed a considerable amount of methamphetamine. After a short foot pursuit and area containment, the male adult suspect was located in the backyard of 12148 Cedarville St., Norwalk. The suspect admitted to deputies that he ran from them because he knew he had a “no bail’ felony ‘theft’ warrant out of Orange County. The suspect was also in possession of 28 financial access cards, which are credit cards and bank cards, and a magnetic strip detector used to manufacture fraudulent access cards. The suspect, who was from Riverside, was arrested for numerous felony charges.

wrists. The additional 20 pounds are a lot on the 80-pound teen. “You’re tired. You get home…your hips and back, everything is hurting. You take them off, you let your skin heal, breathe, be healthy. It’s just really important to take care of the legs you do have,” Shawn said. Those legs weren’t enough. Around the house, countertops are too tall for Olivia. “If I want to get food, I have to reach and I literally can’t even reach the cups,” Olivia said. As she prepared to drive and go off to college, Olivia needed an ultralight wheelchair she could load and unload from the driver’s seat. She’s mortified at the thought of having to rely on her dad and older brother to carry her around. “It’s just really embarrassing because, like yeah, I’m almost an adult,” Olivia said. To her mom, Olivia is still her little girl and she is desperate. “This has gone beyond what I can do by myself. I can’t win this one on my own,” Shawn said. Shawn started a GoFundMe account to raise the money necessary for her daughter’s wheelchair.

BY TAMMYE MCDUFF Long time Cerritos resident, Marcella Kroupa McMahon [Marcy] celebrated her 99th birthday this month. Next year she will join the honorary status of Centurion, eagerly waiting to receive a telephone call from the president. Marcy is one out of 50,000 Cerritos residents to attain such an honor, with the older two being 101 and 103. Marcy was born in 1920 in Minnesota, graduated from the Twin Cities College and moved to Southern California. She married Ray McMahon in 1940 who was a World War II Marine veteran. Her parents Tillie Worshek and Frank Kroupa were both from Southern Minnesota and were born in the late 1800’s. Her parents were both immigrants from Czech- Bohemia. “December is the absolute best month to celebrate a birthday” she said, “everything is always so decorated for the holidays, plus I get to wear my favorite colors – green and red!” As a December baby she says “I never felt deprived about getting birthday presents, because the whole world gets to celebrate with me!” “I have owned three homes in my lifetime,” said Marcy, ”and each one I purchased in December, because it is such a lovely month, after all!” Her late husband of almost 60 years bought their first Honeymoon model home in Downey during the 1940’s. Later on they moved to an exclusive executive home in South Bay Palos Verdes and later retired and downsized to their small garden cottage compound in Cerritos. The two enjoyed traveling in their RV and loved to create the absolutely enchant-

ing garden that has some plants that are over 50 years old and still thriving Staying active my pruning and replanting helps to keep Marcy moving and can be seen in her hat and fancy garden gloves every day. She keeps her mind sharp by playing Kings in the Corner, a Midwestern snappy card game that feels like everybody's playing a single solitaire game, but there's only one winner. She is a parishioner of St. Hedwig’s in Rossmoor and a former GUILD attendee of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, St. Raymond’s, St. Lawrence Martyr and St. John Fisher Catholic Churches. Marcy celebrated this last double digit her birthday, with her two sons and her dearest fur-baby Coco. Relatives flew in to celebrate ‘to the ninety nines’ with a formal dinner party that even Gatsby would be envious of. “I got to divulge in my favorite dessert ‘Hello Dollies’, they were seven layers of chocolate deliciousness,” laughed Marcy, “I was even a little bit naughty and imbibed with a cranberry liqueur. I’ll save the candle for next year – all 100 of them!” After 99 years she says she is still waiting to get that beautiful red car with a big bow delivered to her driveway on Christmas morning. “This has always been a dream of mine. Perhaps this article will find its way to the North Pole and Santa will have his reindeer deliver one!” Marcy says she doesn’t want to get married again but says she misses having a companion that enjoys dry Gimlets, melting candles, cuckoo clocks and orchids. She still loves French Art and long Sunday drives. “Perhaps I will finish my memoirs in time for my 100th birthday."

Biola University’s Campus Safety Awards Dinner was held December 6, Michael Pierce, who joined the Biola University community August 2010 as Vice President of Business and Financial Affairs, was the keynote speaker. The Campus Safety Department's main responsibility is to provide safety and protection of students, staff and visitors. They are the primary law enforcement agency on campus and officers have full police enforcement responsibilities while on duty. They are basically police officers, armed, equipped with TASERs, Oleoresin Capsicum spray and batons. In addition to state-mandated training courses, officers have ten in-service trainings annually that cover emergency preparedness, physical skills and customer service. Campus Safety conducts a joint training at the start of each semester with the department of Residence Life for Officers, Dispatchers, Residence Directors and Residence Coordinators that cover student safety issues and response to emergencies on-campus. Armed officers receive firearms training no less than four times a year, as well as biannual active shooter response training. Among the numerous acknowledgements and awards given out that evening was to Anne Haraksin for receiving the Special Appreciation Award for her hard work. Chief of the Campus Safety Department John Ojeisekhoba, was also honored for his dedication and service as police chief for the past ten years.

JENNIFER HONG HOLDS CAMPAIGN FUNDRAISER

HONOR LAKEWOOD VETERANS BY SHARING THEIR STORY The City of Lakewood invites residents to submit a story and photo of a Lakewood-connected veteran or activeduty servicemember to be featured on the Veterans History Project website, www. lakewoodveterans.org. The information is used to create a page on the website as a permanent tribute to the military servicemembers who lived, worked or were involved in the Lakewood community from its founding through today. In 2014, as part of the city’s 60th anniversary, residents submitted family photos of their military servicemembers for a special gallery to honor their role in the city’s founding. The collection is still available online at www.lakewoodcity. org/60thMilitary. The city would especially like to include the stories of these servicemembers in the Lakewood Veterans History Project website, if a family member can provide the information.

To get started, visit the Veterans History Project website at www.lakewoodveterans.org and click on the "Submit a Story" tab, or browse the stories posted there. You can also download a flyer at that page for details on the information you need to prepare, and guidelines for selecting and scanning a photo of your veteran. Flyers and worksheets are also available at the Public Information Department in city hall. If you don't have Internet access, or need assistance, help is available. You can schedule an appointment to bring your information and photo to the Weingart Senior Center on pre-arranged dates and times. A volunteer will complete the online form for you and scan and upload the photo. For more information please call Lakewood’s Community Relations Office at 562-866-9771, extension 3123 or email CommunityRelations@lakewoodcity.org.

BY TAMMYE MCDUFF As a successful businesswoman, Jennifer Hong has operated a multi-million dollar garment business headquartered in Cerritos for many years. And her crusade for Cerritos City Council shows her acumen in organizing and implementing a thriving campaign with her latest fundraiser at the Cerritos Sheraton Hotel. Hong currently serves Chair of the Cerritos Planning Commission and has garnered endorsements from Cerritos Mayor pro tem Frank Yokoyama; Cerritos councilman and former Mayor Mark Pulido; Cerritos Councilwoman and former Mayor Grace Hu, ABCUSD Board President Dr. Olga Rios and numerous other city and district officials. Among keynote speakers was President Dr. Rios and Cerritos College Trustee Dr. Shin Liu, both who praised Hong’s ability to look ahead and forecast policies. As a member of the Planning Commission, Hong currently acts as an advisory to the City Council establishing policies and governing the growth and

development of the city of Cerritos. The evening was not all political speeches, the 150 attendees were entertained by world renowned artists Yihan Chen, a pipa soloist and guzheng instructor and acclaimed tenor James Chiao. Chen is a mesmerizing master of the ancient four-string Chinese lute and has garnered top awards for Chinese music performances at the Freedom International Chinese instrument Competition and the Art Cup. Chiao was a fisherman in the South China Sea, now he is the composer of the highly anticipated musical ‘Mannequin Man by Day, Tenor by Night’, he is one of the three sons of famous Chinese folk composer Fei Chiao. Hong’s campaign is running on three major pledges: to make Cerritos safer by promoting more Neighborhood Watch involvement; improving infrastructure by repairing sidewalks, streets and the continuation of the park like feel of the city; preserving critical services and sustaining city programs. Meetings Teach Families About Foster-Adoption Foster care and foster-adoption are meaningful ways for individuals and couples to fulfill their dream of parenting. Children’s Bureau offers a comprehensive foster care and adoption program that brings families together for a lifetime. The agency is in need of resource families for children in foster care while reunifying with birth families or to provide legal permanency by adoption. “Children’s Bureau focuses on keeping siblings together whenever possible,” said Amy Heilman, Children’s Bureau’s Director of Foster Care and Adoption. “The sibling relationship is a strong and important long-term bond in the life of a child. We see that children adjust better and find more success in life when they join a family with their siblings. It takes away that worry about the safety of their brother or sister. The child can then focus on adjusting to the family they have joined and their new environment.” Although we find loving families for more than 300 at-risk children and finalize 100 adoptions annually, the need continues for more individuals and families to become resource parents, especially ones who are able to accept siblings. Resource parents (foster and adoptive) are concerned about the well-being of children and their families. Resource parents protect and nurture children, meet children’s developmen-

tal needs, support children’s relationships with their birth families and do all of this as a member of a professional team. Children’s Bureau welcomes every individual regardless of race, age, religion, disability, marital status, ethnic background, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression to become a resource for children. Qualifying families receive training and support throughout their journey. Children's Bureau now also offers a fee-for-service Domestic /Independent Adoption Home Study Program for families seeking the adoption of an infant whose birth mother is making an adoption plan for her newborn child. Discover if you have the willingness, ability and resources to take on the challenge of helping children in need. A monthly information meeting is being held Saturday, January 11, 2020 from 10:00 AM to Noon at Children’s Bureau’s Carson office, 460 East Carson Plaza Drive, Suite 102, Carson 90746. BELLFLOWER

Continued from page 1 A second meeting was held at Simms Park on December 10th to further discuss the complete plan for the location and construction of the Temporary Shelter Service [TSS] by December 31, 2019. Persons receiving services from the Shelter must be ‘Bellflower based’ meaning that provided services would be limited to those who can reasonably justify that Bellflower was indeed their home. Persons receiving TSS services must be referred to the shelter by LASD, CityNet or other qualified agencies approved by the City. A decision made by the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals puts limits on cities from enforcing so called ‘anti-nuisance’ regulations against homeless persons camping, loitering or sleeping outdoors, unless the City approves emergency shelter. Over the past few years the city has tried many methods with multiple organizations to solve this problem. They have contracted with two nonprofits, CityNet and Kingdom Causes, to identify and assist the homeless in finding shelter. Although these efforts were effective in determining who is from Bellflower and who is not, it was still not legal to enforce anti-camping, loitering or prohibitions on sleeping outside. The creation of the shelter gives City staff, LASD and other enforcement agencies an answer to the often heard statement “there is no law against being homeless. Although this statement remains true, the City now has an effective way to begin enforcing previously unenforceable City codes due to federal case law. Upon completion and opening of the TSS, Bellflower will be able to enforce and prosecute their anti-camping and anti-nuisance laws and their ordinances against aggressive panhandling. Persons violating the Bellflower Mu-

nicipal code by ‘camping’ or otherwise violating city codes will be referred to a bed at TSS. Those not choosing this option will be given the choice of leaving the City or going to jail. A second meeting was held at Simms Park to further explain to the more than 100 residents gathered, that upon signing the Catholic Worker case, the City had a very limited window to locate, build and open a TSS. The City considered six locations, after review the Cedar Street warehouse was chosen. The enclosed space had sufficient square footage for necessary TSS buildouts such as sleeping dorms, common areas, bathrooms and shower facilities and due to the SCE power line right of way, the location already had a secure, fenced alleyway separating future shelter inhabitants from residences that are located immediately west of the structure. The Council designated the City Manager, Jeff Stewart, the authority to quickly implement the TSS. To date there has been a multi-year lease with the property owners and approved the purchase of K-Rail necessary parking barriers. Mercy House has been approved as the organization that will oversee the TSS. Mercy House provides housing and comprehensive supportive services for a variety of homeless populations which includes families, adult men and women, mothers and their children, persons living with HIV/AIDS, individuals overcoming substance addictions, and some who are physically and mentally disabled. Stewart reiterated, “the only homeless people that will be allowed to be housed and supported in the TSS are those who can show proof they are from Bellflower or have a prior connection to the City. For more information regarding the TSS, contact City Hall at (562) 8041424. The City Clerk opened the nominations for Mayor pro tem and Councilman Tony Lima nominated Rene Trevino. After the vote, Trevino stated he was humbled and honored to be chosen as Mayor Pro Tem. “I will continue to advance the needs of the residents, our parks and programs. These programs are essential to our children, in order to steer them in a direction of being productive members of society, he stated. The process, as reported exclusively by HMG-LCCN, included paying Renea Ferrel, a former grant writer from Compton with a questionable background, $190,000 to screen cannabis applicants. The City also paid Ebony McGee Andersen, a current multi-level marketing salesperson, $210,000 to establish an award process for the cannabis applicants. Both miserably failed because neither had experience in cannabis screening prior to working for Soria. Several legitimate applicants who have licenses in other cities, some winning the licenses as the highest rated company, were excluded from the selection process. Many vehemently complained at a recent City Council meeting that the pro-

cess set up by Ferrel and Andersen was “tainted.” The pictures show Soria sponsoring a trip on November 22 to Las Vegas, using a City-leased bus loaded with officials, local Teamster union representatives, and Carlos Maravilla, a candidate running for City Council in Commerce. The word loaded was key to the trip. Soria branded the trip “Canna Bus to Las Vegas, ”designing a professional logo that included the city of Commerce’s name prominently displayed inside the famous Las Vegas sign logo, along with an Ace card that had a pot leaf. It is unknown if Soria asked for permission to use the Las Vegas sign logo or who paid for the logo. Seen in one of several pictures posted on the Commerce Now Facebook page is Soria on the City-leased bus, with what looks like a large beer in hand, and several officials, including candidate Maravilla, smiling broadly wearing his Teamsters t-shirt. Sources have told HMG-LCCN that it is against Commerce City policy to drink alcohol on a City-leased bus. Soria typed a phrase below the Facebook post, “CannaBus to Vegas. Puro pariiii!!! b4 the pariii!” Puro pari was used by two Los Angeles radio hosts when they talked about partying and getting extremely drunk, to the point of throwing up. Puro is drinking hard, pari is “puking” afterward. In another picture, Soria is seen with Maravilla and former Bell Gardens Councilman Mario Beltran, who is often seen in cities that are pushing for cannabis licenses. Beltran was accused by prosecutors of embezzling campaign funds from Ron Calderon to pay for his legal defense in a 2006 criminal case. Beltran pleaded guilty to four counts. Seven counts of grand theft, one

count of perjury and one count of failing to deposit cash was dismissed at sentencing as part of Beltran’s negotiated plea agreement. In addition, Beltran was accused of filing a false police report when he solicited a prostitute at a seedy hotel in 2013. The prostitute reportedly beat Beltran up and stole his Bell Gardens police badge. Yet there was Soria and Maravilla, in front of the Canna Bus to Las Vegas logo, both smiling with convicted felon Mario Beltran. The pictures could have many calling for Soria’s ouster from his Sheriff’s Department position given his credibility and judgement in courting a convicted felon. Soria’s job description calls for interaction between station personnel, other law enforcement agencies, and emergency service organizations. He also acts as a liaison to other public agencies and private organizations involved in crime prevention. And most important, Soria assists in the investigation of alleged violations of laws and regulations by gathering, assembling, and examining a variety of records and data pertinent to the case being investigated. “Seems like that Canna Bus to Vegas and hanging out with Mario Beltran goes against everything the Sheriff stands for,” said one Commerce resident who did not want to be identified, “not to mention the stain he placed on the City with that stupid logo.” “And what’s with Carlos Maravila, the Commerce Council candidate who also hangs around felons, I wonder what his Teamster bosses would think of that?” Several texts into Soria went unreturned.

WHITNEY FALLS IN CONSOLATION CHAMPIONSHIP WHILE GAHR, NORWALK FINISH ON STRONG NOTE BY LOREN KOPFF When the annual John GlennNorwalk Girls Basketball Varsity Classic began on Dec. 4, four area teams were dropped into the loser’s bracket due to first round losses. One of those four then won two straight games and played for the consolation championship. Whitney High found itself trailing Paramount High by double digits very early and throughout most of the first half, then rallied to get to within a basket late in the game before finally falling to the Pirates 49-44 last Saturday afternoon. The Lady Wildcats never led in the contest but were down by three points nearly halfway through the opening quarter before Paramount scored nine straight points to make it a 13-1 contest. The lead would balloon to 22-7 with 4:58 remaining in the first half before junior Kimberly Hosoda scored six straight points on a free throw, a two-pointer and a three-pointer in a span of a minute. By the time the half had ended, the Pirates were up 26-18 and the Lady Wildcats were feeling some momentum. “Well, the first quarter I thought we had a hard time running our offense because we were not focused and we made some bad decisions that led to a lot of turnovers,” said Whitney first-year head coach Myron Jacobs. “That’s why the first quarter was 14-3 Paramount, not to add that we weren’t hitting our shots.

In the second quarter, after making some adjustments, I thought our offense started to pick up.” Whitney shot 17 percent from the field in the first half and turned the ball over six times in the first quarter. But in the third quarter, Paramount began to widen its lead and scored nine straight points to lead by 17 points. However, Whitney ended the stanza strong and went on a 10-2 run over the final half of the quarter. The Lady Wildcats kept going in the final quarter and went on a 9-2 run over the first 3:47 to trail 39-37 following a three-pointer from senior Janelle Ho. Whitney would remain within two possessions the remainder of the game, but after freshman Rachel Song scored with 59 seconds remaining, Whitney would attempt two more shots. “Beside the fact that we didn’t start the game strong and Paramount was able to go up 14-3 in the first quarter, we knew that it was only going to get worse because of the height Paramount had in the key and we’ve seen that most of their points were because we didn’t box out,” Jacobs said. “We knew if we slowed the game down and control the rebounds and hit our open shots, we were going to be able to come back.” Ho and Hosoda were named to the all-tournament team and each scored 17 points. In addition, Hosoda grabbed six rebounds, had five steals and three assists.

For the tournament, Hosoda totaled 66 points, 27 rebounds and 20 steals. “I think Kimberly had a good tournament,” Jacobs said. “For her to have 66 points out of four games says a lot. Yes, I do think her numbers on free throws should be a little bit better. But any coach who sees her numbers would be happy with that. The scary part is she has not even played her best game yet. As a coach, I’m glad to have a kid who loves the game of basketball and plays so hard when she’s out on the court. She’s a great leader and I’m happy to have her on the team.” Whitney began the tournament falling to Inglewood High 58-42 before defeating Gahr High 62-40 and St. Joseph High 52-38. The Lady Wildcats, who lost to Northview High 47-32 this past Tuesday to drop their record to 3-7, will host Paramount tonight before competing in the Savanna Tournament next week. “The first nine games have really been a challenge,” Jacobs said. “I think it’s good we are playing up in competition because it’s only making us better. Every game we’ve played to now has showed improvement and I believe that will help us in league. But we do have a lot to fix and I believe when league comes, we will be ready.” Gahr High kicked off the final day of the tournament hoping to avoid going winless against Lawndale. Despite trailing most of the first half, the Lady Gladiators ended the first half on a roll and continued that momentum into the second half in a 47-29 victory. Gahr had previous lost to tournament runner-up

Orange Lutheran High 53-49, and John Glenn High 48-38. “It was a much-needed win,” said Gahr first-year head coach Darrell Gillcrese. “We’ve been fighting to stay in each of the games this week. I have to give a lot of praise to my young players for keeping the game close for a few quarters in each of the games.” Gahr took the lead for good with 40 seconds left in the first half on a basket from freshman Lauryn Teramoto. But with the Lady Gladiators clinging to a 22-20 lead, a steal and basket from senior Kayla Miyake started a 9-0 run that lasted the final 2:58 of the third quarter and gave them a 31-20 advantage. Gahr was paced by freshman Brya Arroyo, who was named to the alltournament team. She had a team-high 13 points with three rebounds and three steals. Miyake added 12 points, seven rebounds and seven steals while Teramoto pitched in with 10 points and eight rebounds. As a team, Gahr forced 40 turnovers and had 23 steals. “I am impressed with all my freshmen and sophomores that have had to play some major minutes so far, and they have learned and improved their game in each game they have played,” Gillcrese said. “I feel like they are getting battle-tested early so that they are ready for league. “Brya Arroyo has been solid this season,” he continued. “She has played with poised and continues to learn how to impact a game. She is very versatile in her game; she showed that she could play more than one position. It’s a bonus she can put the ball in the

Consecutive baskets from senior Zaafir Haider, the second off a steal, gave Whitney an early 7-3 lead before the Eagles managed to take a 10-8 lead with just under a minute left in the first quarter. The Wildcats regained the lead 35 seconds into the second quarter on a threepointer from freshman David Song and gained some breathing room at the end of the half when freshman Ethan Wong stole the ball and fed a pass to junior Dhilan Amin who scored at the buzzer, giving Whitney a 22-18 lead. Whitney’s lead expanded to seven points with 4:15 left in the third quarter on Amin’s lone three-pointer in the game. But Calvary Chapel Santa Ana rallied to tie the game at 32-32 with 90 seconds remaining in the stanza. The Wildcats opened a five-point lead

Continued from page 10 hoop.” Gahr visited Glenn this past Tuesday and was saddled with a forfeit loss to the Lady Eagles. The Lady Gladiators will next be in action on Thursday at Garden Grove High. At 3-8, Gillcrese knows the record would have been better had it not been for the loss of the team’s leading scorer from last season, senior Clarissa Heredia, who was injured in the third game of the season. Heredia had scored 65 points in the first three games. “It’s been extremely difficult without having Clarissa; she is the X-factor for our team,” Gillcrese said. “She is truly missed. We can’t wait to get her back on the court. To be honest, we have not had Clarissa or Kayla Miyake in our lineup for several of the first 10 games. We look to pivot to having a solid lineup in our upcoming 18 games.” Following the Gahr game against Lawndale, the host schools met with the chance to end the tournament 2-2. Norwalk High proved to be too much for the Lady Eagles and turned a close first quarter into a 56-35 victory, improving to 4-3 overall. This was the second time in the past three seasons that Glenn

and Norwalk had played in the second game on the final day. In 2017, Norwalk was victorious 55-49 to capture the consolation championship. “I’m proud of the girls in them closing out the tourney strong,” said Norwalk head coach Ashley Baclaan. “We played a couple of hard games to start off, regathered ourselves and was able to execute to finish.” Glenn never led in the game but was able to tie the contest six times within the first three minutes, the last coming at 8-8 when senior Dominique Harrison scored off an offensive rebound. After that, the Lady Lancers went on a 15-5 run that lasted into the first minute of the second quarter, highlighted by nine points from junior Ariel Garate, who nailed a pair of three-pointers and converted a third three-point play. Norwalk would lead 28-20 with 2:45 remaining in the first half before Baclaan called a timeout. Her team responded by ending the half on a 10-0 run and never looked back. Garate, who was named to the all-tournament team, was solid in the half, scoring 15 of her team-high 16 points on 50 percent shooting from the field. She also had four rebounds and two steals in the half and finished the game with nine boards. “I think Ariel is starting to step into

her role of knowing her strengths and being a leader for the team,” Baclaan said. “Her shot has been dropping in for her and it’s great.” Both teams combined to score 12 points in the third quarter when the final stanza began, Glenn tried to get back into the game by going on a 6-0 run to trail by a dozen points. But Norwalk finished off its city rivals by ending the contest on an 11-2 run. Junior Brianna Flores, also named to the all-tournament team, also had 16 points and four rebounds while senior Clarissa Perez and sophomore Katrina Slaughter each added half a dozen points. Glenn was led by Harrison, who scored 17 points and had nine rebounds. Junior Cynthia Almanzar pitched in with seven points and five boards. Norwalk began the tournament falling to South Torrance High 52-25 and Fountain Valley High 61-23 before knocking off Lawndale. Glenn (6-3) lost to Lakewood High 62-41 and St. Joseph High 41-38 before the win over Gahr. Norwalk will visit California High tonight before hosting Western High on Tuesday and Anaheim High on Thursday while Glenn travels to Orange High on Saturday. Glenn will host Norwalk on Dec. 20 in their now-annual non-league meeting.

“Glenn, like any opponent, can’t be underestimated,” Baclaan said. “They came out and played hard. I think as for us, we just have to keep in mind of their abilities; how they got buckets and stops on us and prepare that they’re preparing for us too.”

CERRITOS TOWNE CENTER HOLIDAY

SKILLED BALLOON artist crafted candy canes, Santa hats, balloon stockings and all sorts of holiday happiness for dozens of children waiting to see that Jolly Old Elf. BY TAMMYE MCDUFF Cerritos Towne Shopping Center held their annual Holiday Celebration, Sunday, December 8th from 12:00 noon to 2:00 pm. Located right outside the in the Edwards Stadium 10 Courtyard, children were invited to have free photos taken with Kris Kringle. Holiday craft tables were stationed underneath the candy cane decorated pagoda and kids could decorate a gingerbread man or make reindeer antlers for themselves. Two crafty elves took

on the holiday chore of painting happy little faces with candy canes, snowflakes and poinsettias while parents could relax with a piping hot beverage. Rather tall North Pole helpers twisted brightly colored helium balloons into candy canes, elf and Santa hats, reindeer antlers, gingerbread men, teddy bears and even a Grinch or two. An extra bonus for mom and dad was a free gift card when spending $75.00 at Cerritos Towne Center.
