Many question John Soria's decision after witnesses said he joined the fight and sucker punched a Councilman

BY BRIAN HEWS It was May 18, 2019 when HMGLCCN first reported on a "huge" fight that broke out at the annual Contract Cities convention at the Renaissance Indian Wells, allegedly instigated by Commerce Councilman Ivan Altamirano.

Several witnesses to the melee have told Palm Desert detectives that after Commerce Councilman Ivan Altamirano sucker-punched fellow councilman Leonard Mendoza, allegedly over an argument involving cannabis in the City, the Chacons, along with Commerce Councilman Hugo Argumedo, ran over to check on Mendoza.

As they were bent down checking on Mendoza, the witnesses said that Soria, political operative Luis Reyes, and disgraced former Bell Gardens Councilman Mario Beltran led a charge with over ten other “thugs” and jumped the Chacons and Argumedo from behind, hitting and kicking the men, knocking them all to the floor.

The Chacons came away with several injuries, including a ruptured eye and a concussion, while Argumedo got a black eye and severely bruised ribs, their injuries consistent with being in a defenseless position on the ground.

Soria, along with Altamirano, have maintained they were the victims who were hit from behind and suckerpunched.

Yet Altamirano had minor injuries, with Soria attending another conference the following Monday, just 36 hours after the fight.

Fast-forward to the June 4 Commerce regular City Council meeting, where Soria entered the Council chambers accompanied by a man no one knew.

As Soria took his seat behind the dais, the diminutive man took a seat behind Soria.

Councilman Hugo Argumedo saw what was going on and questioned Soria about the man.

To the surprise of many in the room, the man said he was Soria’s bodyguard,

LA MIRADA’S ADOPTED BUDGET FUNDS KEY PROGRAMS AND SERVICES At its June 25 meeting, the La Mirada City Council adopted its budget for Fiscal Year 2019-20.

The budget for the new fiscal year, which begins July 1, reflects the City’s commitment to providing services that enhance the quality of life in La Mirada.

General Fund revenues of $40.7 million offset expenses of $36.6 million, without transfers. Funding for public safety, economic development, capital improvement projects, and community programs continues to be of high priority for the City.

The City will continue to dedicate a large amount of its resources to enhance the safety of the community. Public Safety is the largest budget item at $9.4 million. Funding will be allocated for services provided by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department and support services offered to the community through the Community Sheriff’s Station.

The City’s Public Safety Team will continue to provide services and programs that help strengthen partnerships with residents, businesses, and schools and help retain La Mirada among the safest cities in the region.

The La Mirada Grocery Outlet recently changed ownership with Amanda Paez and Steven Hernandez officially taking over the store located on Imperial Highway May 18, 2019.

Both were in the armed forces and stationed in San Diego with Hernandez getting discharged before Paez.

“I had already left the military and Amanda was still active duty. I wanted to have something close to her and to our home and there was a Grocery Outlet about a mile away from our house. I figured that would be a good place to start.”

Hernandez says he applied and was hired as a cashier right away. “I really enjoyed working for the company, and began to move up in the store.” He says that he had been with the chain for about a year when he learned about the ownership program.

CERRITOS' ASSESSED PROPERTY VALUES JUMP

ASSESSED VALUE for residential, commercial and industrial properties in Cerritos for 2017 was about $9.23 billion, in 2018, it was about $9.63 billion, an increase of about $399 million, according to Los Angeles County records.

To enhance accuracy and efficiency, Assessor IT experts designed and developed the Mobile Assets Tracking System

(MATS) and Train Tracks, with the latter being a collaborative effort between Assessor staff and students from the University of Southern California (USC).

BY TAMMYE MCDUFF Beginning July 1st, Shout Factory TV will stream episodes of Then Again with Herbie J Pilato, a 30-minute talkfest dedicated to classic television.

The six-episode first season will premiere on both Shout Factory’s streaming service and Amazon Prime. Four episodes will begin airing on July 1, 2019 followed by two additional episodes.

"I know of no one in this industry more connected to, or passionate about, the world of classic television than Herbie J Pilato," says Joel Eisenberg, Executive Director, "We want this program to become historically important in the world of both art and culture."

SCAQMD LAUNCHES HOURLY AIR FORECASTS APP STAFF REPORT The South Coast Air Quality Management District [SCAQMD] has announced the launch of its new hourly air forecast that has the ability to predict air quality levels, hour-by-hour for fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and ozone (smog) for up to two consecutive days.

“Whether you are planning a hike after work, an outdoor exercise class, or making plans to take your children to the playground, this hourly air quality information can greatly impact public health,” said Wayne Nastri, South Coast AQMD’s Executive Officer, “we encourage all residents to download our new app or visit our website to better plan their activities during the times of day when air quality is predicted to be the cleanest.”

During the summer smog season, hot and stagnant days can increase the formation of ground-level ozone - known as smog to frequently lead to unhealthy air quality. South Coast AQMD recommends that residents stay abreast of air quality levels in their area and adjust outdoor activities accordingly.

Until now, South Coast AQMD had issued one daily forecast summarizing air quality conditions for 45 geographical areas in the region for the entire day. However, with improved modeling techniques developed by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration [NOAA], South Coast AQMD can now issue hourly air quality forecasts for the next one to two days.

"NOAA's air quality model predictions for the nation provide the foundation for essential services like these, which deliver critically important air quality forecasts to residents in southern

California," said Ivanka Stajner, Deputy Director, NOAA's Environmental Modeling Center.

Predicted air quality levels are reported as an Air Quality Index [AQI].

A higher AQI indicates higher levels of air pollutants, with potentially greater health concerns. The hourly forecast can now show how levels are expected to change throughout the day. If the AQI predicts unhealthy levels, the public can choose to reschedule outdoor activities to the time or day predicted to be the healthiest.

This is a vital tool for all residents in the South Coast Air Basin, especially doctors, patients, school personnel, parents, fitness instructors and sports coaches that work with sensitive groups such as children, the elderly or those with respiratory issues such as asthma.

LA PALMA'S FUN RUN SET FOR JULY 4 STAFF REPORT

STAFF REPORT The La Mirada City Council recognized residents Bill and Susan Savage and Mayor Steve De Ruse and his wife, Mary, on their 50th wedding anniversaries. The couples were recognized through the City’s Anniversary Recognition program at the June 25 meeting.

Bill and Susan have called La Mirada home for nearly 35 years. The two met in the summer of 1967 in South Gate, and in 1985 relocated their family to La Mirada. Bill served in the United States Army as a Specialist and worked as a member of the General’s Staff at the Communication Command in Vietnam. He later worked in the aerospace industry as an engineer. Susan worked as a financial advisor for a food industry broker.

They have both been active members of the community for many years. Bill served on the La Mirada Community Foundation from 2007 to 2010. Susan has served as a member of the Community Services Commission since its inception in 2000. She also served as a member of the Citizen Task Force on City Finances and Operations in 2012.

Mayor Pro Tem John Lewis congratulated Mayor Steve De Ruse and his wife, Mary, on their special milestone anniversary.

The couple married in 1969 and relocated to La Mirada on the day of their seventh wedding anniversary.

Mary worked as a professional Human Resources representative and in the banking industry prior to her retirement.

Mayor De Ruse was elected to the La Mirada City Council in 2011 and has served as a Councilmember and Mayor. He holds a Doctor of Ministry Degree, is a senior pastor of a local church, and is a former high school coach. They have both enjoyed living in La Mirada and raising their two children in the city.

“Bill and Susan Savage have been outstanding members of the La Mirada community for many years,” said Mayor Steve De Ruse. “It is an honor to celebrate this meaningful milestone together.”

The two couples share the same wedding day and Mayor De Ruse and Bill Savage lived in the same community growing up. Coincidentally, both chose La Mirada as the place they wanted to live and raise their families. Both couples have been active members of the La Mirada community and have enjoyed volunteering throughout the years.

Summer is a time for BBQ’s and 4th of July parties. We hope that you have a wonderful time with your friends and family as we celebrate our nation’s freedom.

As a reminder, the city has a zero tolerance for illegal fireworks. The Downey Police Department will be out in full force this 4th of July on the lookout for the use or possession of illegal fireworks. Fines begin at $2,000 for a first offense and increase up to $3,000. Safe and Sane fireworks will be available for sale at fireworks stands throughout the city from July 1st to July 4th. You must be 18 years old or older to purchase. Minors cannot possess or discharge fireworks unless in the presence of a responsible adult. The discharge hours for legal fireworks are on July 4th between the hours of 3:00pm to 10:00pm only. The city’s goal is to make 4th of July a safe and enjoyable holiday for all.

The third meeting for the Downey Business Watch Program is scheduled for July 11th at 9:00am inside the City Council Chambers. This program is a joint effort between the Downey Police Department and the Downey Chamber of Commerce to help prent and reduce crimes. The Program was developed to serve as a tool for businesses who seek information on reducing the chances of becoming a victim of a crime. Through the Program, merchants learn crime prevention techniques and strategies that help reduce business-related crime. The program also helps owners become familiar with resources available from the Downey Police Department. The Business Watch Program focuses on teaching employees how to be observant and aware. Trained employees are a business’ front line and a great resource to deter crime. The Business Watch Program offers free quarterly training seminars for businesses in the City of Downey. Quarterly seminar topics will be offered in areas such as: Active Shooter Training; Fraud; False Identification; Identify theft; Credit Card Fraud; Building Security; Burglary Prevention; Robbery Prevention; Shoplifting Prevention and Merchandise Display and Layout.

The Twilight Summer Concert series continues this month with the Marine Division Band on July 10th and The Wiseguys Swing Band July 17th. Unsung heroes are extraordinary everyday people who do the right thing and are committed to excellence in their work, while being humble of their everyday contributions. The library continues to bring summer programs and events for our children to enjoy. On July 15th the summer library show ‘Kids Imagine Nation’ will be held at the Downey Theatre at 4:00pm. Kids Imagine Nation is a children’s musical group which

writes and performs their own music and theatrical live shows. They’re a fun bunch to watch and great for kids of all ages. On July 22nd ‘Anthony the Magic!’ is set to visit the Downey Theatre. This is a magic and illusion team that will bring wonder to children’s eyes and spark their imagination. Both shows are free to the public and are guaranteed to be a great time for the family.

With students out of school for the summer you will see many of them walking our streets to spend time with their friends at local restaurants and shops. Mothers are also walking with their little ones to local parks or to the Columbia Memorial Space Center for summer play dates and summer camps. Please remember to be mindful of your speed and drive carefully. Our police officers are patrolling our city and keeping our city safe but we also need you to do your part and abide by the law.

CERRITOS AND LA PALMA AGREE TO JOINT STREET UPGRADES STAFF REPORT

BY TAMMYE MCDUFF In December 2015, the Bellflower City Council approved to fund the Homeless Prevention and Rapid Re-housing Program [HPRP] with Our Place Housing Solutions, operating under Kingdom Causes Bellflower [KCB].

Since that time the agreement has been renewed annually to provide various forms of assistance and services to prevent households from becoming homeless and help those who are experiencing homelessness to be quickly re-housed and stabilized.

Assistance under the HPRP includes rental vouchers, mediation services, housing searches, credit counseling/repair, and related costs for eligible extremely lowincome and at-risk homeless populations.

Since it began 2016, the HPRP has assisted 64 families or individuals in the City with housing related services and short-

term rental assistance for those at risk of becoming homeless.

An additional seventeen individuals were assisted under the Extremely Low Income Rental Assistance Voucher Program which provides rental vouchers of up to twelve months for those currently experiencing homelessness.

KCB told HMG-LCCN that there are two separate types of funding that is utilized for the re-housing program. The first is one-time-only rental assistance and the other is an ongoing voucher program which offers a subsidy for up to twelve months.

The one time assistance could help with rent that may be in arrears, moving assistance or utility assistance.

This year KCB has assisted 31 households, 26 of them in the one-time assistance pocket and five with the voucher program.

The Cerritos City Council recently agreed to participate in a joint project with the City of La Palma for street improvements.

The work consists of street paving rehabilitation on Orangethorpe Avenue and South Street between Moody Street and Carmenita Road and Walker Street and Marquardt Avenue. The majority of the proposed work is in La Palma’s jurisdiction, but a small section falls within the Cerritos’s boundaries.

The City of Cerritos will apply unused funds from another residential street improvement project toward its part in this upgrade.

The City of La Palma will oversee the work and handle all administrative matters related to the project. Cerritos will reimburse La Palma for costs associated with improvements made to the section of the project that falls within the Cerritos city boundaries.

The work is scheduled to start Monday, July 8.

Cerritos Sheriff’s deputies will strictly enforce the law, which has helped protect thousands of residents from injuries and property damage.

PANERA BREAD OPENS IN NORWALK NEAR CITY HALL

BY TAMMYE MCDUFF The Norwalk City Council along with City residents celebrated the grand opening of Panera Bread just steps from City Hall.

“It’s just another high quality fast-casual restaurant opening in Norwalk,” said Vide Mayor Luigi Vernola, “we have been opening many lately, organizations recognize Norwalk is a great City to do business.”

For the most part I like the restaurant chain. It is a combination of quick, hearty food alternatives that trick the brain into accepting it as a healthier option.

The chain boasts everything from soups to salads to sandwiches. And then there's the bread and the dangerously delicious desserts that are far from low calorie.

The company’s website boasts, “Food as it should be, with great taste. Food that does good things for your body and the world around you.”

The menu touts no artificial preservatives, sweeteners, flavors or colors from artificial sources. Without knowing exactly what ingredients are used, whether fresh or canned, you can’t be certain, however the food is flavorful and does appeal to the senses. It actually looks good, there is nothing better than the smell of baked bread and it actually tastes like homemade.

Like many fast food restaurants, seating is optional, however the new Panera Bread has several selections. The inside dining room has tons of natural lighting and is decorated with very subtle natural

colors, giving to a relaxed setting. Guests can sit at a table top, a booth, or a bar with charging outlets, or choose to dine al fresco on the spacious covered patio, perfect for California evenings.

I decided to indulge a bit and ordered the Baja Mac & Cheese. The dish was certainly colorful made from tender shell pasta in a blend of rich cheeses including a tangy Vermont white cheddar cheese sauce, topped with pico de gallo, avocado and cilantro. The dish was surprising light for a cheesy pasta dish, the avocado was fresh and the cilantro was not overpowering.

My entrée came with a choice of bread and a drink. I opted for a French baguette side with a slightly blistered crust and although it is marketed as having a ‘winelike’ aroma – I didn’t notice it. To top off a delicious lunch, you must add a pastry or sweet and the Campfire S’mores Bar was just gooey enough, marshmallow-y enough and chocolat-y enough to round out the experience.

There have been some reviews that say Panera Bread pricing is too high, and I agree. For a large bowl of Mac & Cheese, fresh baguette, S’mores bar and ice tea the ticket was around $16.

Not to be missed is the Green Goddess Cobb Salad with Chicken, a healthy portion of good food or the new Summer Strawberry Caprese salad, both of which can easily be portioned into two helpings.

The new location is at 12531 Imperial Highway, in Norwalk just steps away from City Hall and just in time for their summer concerts.

RABIES CLINIC TO BE HELD IN CERRITOS STAFF REPORT The City of Cerritos will hold a lowcost rabies clinic for dogs and cats in Shelter 1 at Cerritos Park East from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, July 10.

The clinic is sponsored by Long Beach Animal Care Services and Artesia Animal Hospital, in cooperation with the City of Cerritos’ Community Safety and Community Participation divisions.

Rabies shots for dogs and cats will be available for $10, and canine bordetella (kennel cough) shots cost $17 each. Canine coronavirus vaccines are $15, and Lyme disease vaccines will be $23. DHPP shots, also known as the “6-in-1” vaccine that protects dogs from distemper, hepatitis, parainfluenza and parvovirus, will be available for $19. The comparable “4-in-1” (FVRCPP) shot for cats cost $18. Feline bordetella (FIP) shots will be $29, and feline coronavirus (FELV) shots are $20. In addition to vaccination fees, a $3 biohazard disposal fee will be charged for each treated animal.

payable to the City of Cerritos. A driver’s license number and expiration date are required on all checks. Returned checks are subject to a $10 service fee. AVID microchipping will also be available for $25 per cat or dog.

In addition to an annual rabies shot, dogs four months and older are required by law to have a license. Dog licenses will be sold to Cerritos, Long Beach, Los Alamitos, Seal Beach and Signal Hill residents at the clinic. Dog license fees for Cerritos residents are $20, or $10 for dogs that are spayed or neutered (a certificate is required to receive the discount). Seniors ages 60 and older may purchase up to three halfprice licenses per household for dogs that are spayed or neutered. To obtain a license, dog owners must show a copy of a current rabies certificate, valid for 12 months, and a sterility certificate if the dog is spayed or neutered. Checks for dog licenses should be made payable to City of Long Beach.

A big part of the Grocery Outlet business model is to immediately become involved in the local community. Paez and Hernandez have joined the La Mirada Chamber of Commerce and have already adopted the food bank at Grace Evangelical Free Church.

The EV Free team focuses on making friends with all who visit the food bank because many times, people in difficult financial situations need more than free groceries; they need someone to care about them, walk alongside them, listen to them, and pray for them. “We believe in the mission of EV Free,” says Paez,” and they are part of the LA Mission Food Bank.” Shoppers can contribute to EV Free by purchasing a $5.00 grab bag as they enter the store. The remaining $19.6 million will fund other Departments including City Administration, Community Development, Community Services, and the La Mirada Theatre for the Performing Arts.

A total of $23.31 million is allocated for capital improvements to improve neighborhood roads, resurface major streets, replace street identification signs, and landscape center medians. Projects will include construction on the fifth phase of Measure I Neighborhood Street Improvements, traffic signal and lighting enhancements on Rosecrans Avenue to improve pedestrian and commuter safety, landscaping enhancements on La Mirada Boulevard, Rosecrans Avenue, and Valley View Avenue, and various facility improvements.

“A strong financial foundation enables the City to provide quality services and programs to the community,” says City Manager Jeff Boynton. “The City continues to explore new and innovative ways to provide high quality services in an efficient and cost-effective manner.”

Somewhere in between the Contract Cities convention and June 4, Soria, who admitted to HMG-LCCN that he was a former Thai Kickboxing instructor, decided to hire the bodyguard.

He said he “he feared for his life,” the fear apparently related to the Contract Cities melee, the same melee that witnesses told detectives Soria, Reyes and Beltran jumped and beat people from behind.

An indignant Councilman Hugo Argumedo stated, “[Councilman Leonard] Mendoza and I were the ones who were beat up, is he guarding us too?

Why won’t you tell us your name? Who is paying this guy? There are six armed Sheriff’s Deputies in the building and you need a bodyguard?”

When the Sheriff’s learned that the man was a bodyguard, they asked if had a gun, the man answered no.

“This guy is five foot, ten inches tall, maybe 170 pounds,” Argumedo told HMG-LCCN, “and he is a bodyguard, without a gun, paid by the City, give me a break.”

The meeting ended without the bodyguard revealing his name.

Sources have told HMG-LCCN that the bodyguard is with Soria all the time, including travelling with him to all committee meetings, only leaving his side when Soria is at work.

Soria did not respond to any questions sent June 5 from HMG-LCCN concerning the bodyguard.

DANA POINT-The Artesia Punishers 14-Under travel softball team, coached by Andy Macias, has not played in too many tournaments this past spring and summer. But, the one tournament that matters will be the one the team will play in in the few weeks, which will be the USA Nationals.

The Punishers, with only 11 players for this tournament, went 1-2 in pool play action last Saturday at Dana Hills High, then fell to the (Rancho Cucamonga) Firecrackers-Garcia 9-5 this past Sunday for its only game in the single elimination tournament.

The Punishers were unable to get a runner on base through the first three innings, but it was a completely different story in the bottom of the fourth inning when 11 batters stepped up to the plate.

Three pitches later, Mia Mastan (Ridgecrest Intermediate) reached on an error before singles from Lily Uriarte (St. Pancratius) and Lucy Montelongo (Marshall Academy) loaded the bases. On a 2-2 count, a base hit to center from Anaiyah Yniquez (Our Lady of Rosary) brought home Mastan to make it a 4-2 contest.

“In the fourth inning, that’s when we made changes,” Macias said. “We got our little girls in there. They’re actually 12-year old’s playing 14-U. We got them in there because they’re very good bunters and some of them just keep the ball on the ground.”

Despite a scoreless fifth inning from both teams, the Punishers were still

feeling the momentum. But that was immediately lost when the Firecrackers erupted for seven runs to blow the game wide open. After Mastan worked the first five frames, allowing four hits and the two runs while throwing 46 pitches, Jazmine Macias replaced her and was greeted with a two-pitch triple from Isabel Tellez.

Two straight hits and a walk loaded the bases and following an out, two consecutive run-scoring singles made the score 7-4.

“We made the change for the reason that we had went [through] the batting order twice and…our center fielder is our main pitcher,” Andy Macias said.

“As you could see, they were hitting everything off her and we had to go back to our number two pitcher.”

The Punishers wouldn’t go down without a fight in the bottom of the sixth inning. With one out, Uriarte singled to left but was out on second when Montelongo reached on a fielder’s

choice. Yniquez then tripled three pitches later but was thrown out at home trying to stretch the hit into an inside the park home run.

“We sent her because the ball was hit all the way to the fence,” Macias said. “I think we had a good chance and the blue told us at the end if she would have slid, she would have been safe.”

Yniquez was the lone Punisher to get two hits while seven players all picked up a hit. The loss wrapped up a rough weekend that saw the Punishers fall to the (Costa Mesa) California Cruisers-Lowry 7-0 as they were held to two hits with only three runners reaching first base. In the next game, the Punishers rallied from a 3-0 deficit in the first inning to knock off the Santa Ana Xtreme-Maquivi 6-3. But pool play action ended with a 15-2 setback to the (Temecula) EC Bullets-Delamater.

The Punishers will take this weekend off, then spend the first two weekends next month playing in friendlies before participating in the USA Southern California Championships July 17-21, which they had qualified for a few weeks ago in the state qualifier where they finished in third place. At time of press, there were 10 14-Under teams that had qualified for the USA Southern California Championships.

In 2016, the Punishers finished in fifth place in the Amateur Softball Association National Championship.

The next season, they were second in the American Fastpitch Association National Championship and last season, the Punishers finished in second place in the United States Specialty Sports Association National Championship as well as fifth place in the USA National Championship.

STAFF REPORT As the 4th of July approaches, La Mirada's Public Safety team reminds the community that a "zero tolerance" approach will be in place for possession or discharge of illegal fireworks. The Public Safety team will strictly enforce the City's fireworks regulations and will issue a $1,000 fine to individuals caught discharging or in possession of illegal fireworks.

The City recently passed an ordinance which also allows the issuance of fines to individuals who allow dangerous or illegal fireworks to be discharged on or from a property that is owned, leased, rented, or otherwise lawfully possessed by them.

The use of safe and sane fireworks is permitted and only allowed on Thursday, July 4 from 3 to 10 p.m. The discharging of fireworks on City-owned property, including parks, streets, and sidewalks, is prohibited.

Residents are encouraged to celebrate safely. If you observe illegal fireworks, call the La Mirada Community Sheriff's Station at (562) 902-2960.

In the next inning, Duenas flied out to right field before Silva and Ivanna Villalobos (Bell Gardens High) were walked. Diaz then came up and smacked her second double of the game, allowing Silva to score. Diaz would go three for three as the Punishers would collect four hits. However, the team would also leave eight runners on base and commit five errors on defense. Lockett also worked into the third inning, yielding five hits and five runs, all unearned.

Even though the Punishers failed to qualify for the PGF National Championships, they are still going to the Triple Crown Sports World Series in Park City, Utah July 15-20. At time of press, the schedule had not been released, but the Punishers are in a pool with five other teams. A total of 57 16-Under teams will be participating in the World Series.

It was a very quick appearance in the Premier Girls Fastpitch’s Fresno Qualifier for the Artesia Punishers 16-Under team coached by Vince Gonzales. In a span of roughly 16 hours over two days, the Punishers went two and out and managed five hits in the two games.

Last Friday night, the Punishers squandered a one-run lead in the top of the fourth inning and fell to the Southern California Choppers-Del Castillo 7-5.

In the bottom of the second inning, and already down 3-0, Mya Diaz (Anaheim High) was walked and replaced by Rachelle Garcia (Monrovia High). After a sacrifice from Jaela Ruiz (Paramount High) and a groundout from Briana Zarate (Legacy High), Diaz would come home on an error.

The Punishers would take the lead in the next inning and began with a walk to Clarissa Lockett (Hawthorne Math and Science Academy), who then stole second on a 1-2 count to Jessica Lopez (Los Osos High). Five pitches later, Lopez singled and the runners moved up on the throw. The hit would be the only one for the Punishers in the contest. That set the stage for Natalie Plaza (Pacifica High), who grounded out to plate Lockett.

BY EDNA ETHINGTON Seventeen members of the Elected and Appointed Board of the La PalmaCerritos American Association of University Women (AAUW) met at Heritage Park in Cerritos on Saturday, June 22, 2019, to start planning activities and programs for the 2019-2020 AAUW year.

President Harriet Moses opened the meeting and announced Gail Ross as the Named Grant Committee Chair.

Gail presented Certificates of Recognition and AAUW Pins to Named Grant Honorees to President Harriet Moses and Secretary Christine Taxier for their support of the goals of AAUW and the AAUW Fund.

The Oath of Office to members of the Executive Board who were elected in May were adminsitered.

City Crime Summaries Cerritos June 9-16

BY BRIAN HEWS The Cerritos weekly tracking report for 2019 up to June 16 shows that overall calls for service in Cerritos has dropped by an average of 20 a week which is almost 10%.

Part one crimes which include homicide, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, grand theft, and petty theft is down nearly 10% from 2018 numbers.

However miscellaneous crimes which include arson, forgery, fraud, sex felonies, simple assaults, drugs or vandalism has gone up slightly.

The Cerritos Sheriff’s compile an innovative report entitled Supplemental Crime Analysis focusing on residential burglaries and outlining certain categories of the home burglary and why they occur with the category showing what houses are more burglarized.

For instance, out of seven residential burglaries, six occurred when there was not a vehicle in the driveway, six occurred when the homeowner did not have an alarm sign, six occurred while a fumigation was in process, and seven occurred if the people did not have a dog.

Interior categories include if the light was off six burglaries occurred, five occurred if the house did not have a motion sensor, five occurred if the perpetrators called the house and nobody answered the phone.

The sheriffs also use property location category that showed out of the seven burglaries the houses were next to a park, school, freeway, riverbed, or an alley.

Notable Arrests Five suspects were arrested throughout La Mirada for various warrants and narcotics violations.

Robbery An early morning robbery by force was reported on the 15200 block of Rosecrans Ave. No injuries were sustained during the incident.

Other Structure Burglary A storage container was broken into during an early morning burglary near the intersection of Biola Ave. and Stage Rd. Several power tools were stolen during a daytime theft on the 12300 block of La Mirada Blvd.

Vehicle Burglary Two early morning window smash burglaries were reported on the 15900 block of Jalon Rd.

A late night window smash burglary was reported on the 14100 block of Lake View Ave. A daytime burglary was reported on the 14700 block of Beach Blvd.

A 3rd row seat, laptop and clothes were reported stolen during an evening window smash burglary on the 14300 block of Firestone Blvd.

Grand Theft Various items were reported stolen from an early morning theft from an unlocked vehicle on the 12200 block of Santa Gertrudes Ave. A daytime theft was reported from an unlocked vehicle on the 16100 block of Rosecrans Ave. An unlocked vehicle was ransacked during a daytime theft on the 15900 block of Bluefield Ave. Cash was reported stolen on the 15700 block of Valley View Ave. A pallet jack was stolen on the 14500 block of Leffingwell Rd. Grand Theft Auto A stolen motorcycle was recovered near the intersection of Heron Ave. and Canary Ave.

Over the past two weeks there have been (20) reported Part 1 crimes in the City of Bellflower, up from (67) incidents during the previous two weeks.

The greatest number of incidents occurred on Wednesdays (6) and Fridays (4).

LA MIRADA COUNCIL RECOGNIZES CLEARMAN’S NORTH WOODS 30TH ANNIVERSARY STAFF REPORT The La Mirada City Council recognized Clearman’s North Woods Inn for its 30th anniversary at the June 25 meeting. Clearman’s North Woods Inn opened its restaurant 50 years ago, and now has three locations. The restaurant in La Mirada is located at 14305 Firestone Boulevard and is celebrating 30 years in the city. The warm woodsy atmosphere and snow-capped exterior has drawn patrons from near and far to

TAKE PREVENTATIVE STEPS AGAINST WEST NILE VIRUS As temperatures continue to rise, vector control experts stress the need for the public to take preventative steps against mosquitoes. West Nile virus is a mosquito-transmitted disease that can cause debilitating illness and death to humans as well as birds, horses and other wildlife.

Twenty percent of infected people will exhibit flu-like symptoms, and one in 150 people infected will require hospitalization. There is currently no cure or vaccine for the virus.

government and public health agency dedicated to reducing populations of public health vectors and preventing human infection associated with mosquito-transmitted diseases, has issued the following tips to stay safe.

• Eliminate standing water around the home. It takes as little as five days for mosquito eggs to hatch into biting adults.

• Many children play sports or are outdoors from late afternoon to the evening hours, when mosquitoes are most active. Anyone outside during these hours should wear long-sleeved shirts and pants and use insect repellent containing DEET, Picaridin and oil of lemon eucalyptus.

• To help West Nile Virus surveillance and control efforts, report dead birds at westnile.ca.gov.

IMPROVEMENTS SLATED FOR AUTO SQUARE LOTS The Cerritos City Council has awarded a $494,799.61 contract to Superior Paving Inc. of Corona to rehabilitate the first of two auto storage parking lots.

American Engineering will inspect and provide materials testing services for $60,463.

The City currently leases the two lots from Southern California Edison. The city then subleases the space to participat-

ing Auto Square dealers for the storage of vehicle inventory. Under a renewed lease to the City, Edison has required that certain improvements be made.

To minimize disruption to the businesses, the project has been divided into two phases. The first phase includes rehabilitating the parking lot at the northeast corner of Studebaker Road and Del Amo Boulevard. The space is currently subleased to three Auto Square dealerships.

The cost of the project will be reimbursed in full by auto dealers over a three-year period.

The work is expected to be completed in July. While work is being done, vehicles will be temporarily stored at the Los Cerritos Center in the parking lot area adjacent to the former Sears building.
