Plan Presented to La Palma Council Found ‘Unsustainable’ By Rico Dizon The 11-year Sustainable Financial Plan, presented to the La Palma City Council, did not garner favorable support by a majority of the City Council members during its March 5th regular meeting. City Manager Ellen Volmert came out empty handed in her recommendations that the City Council provided directions for the creation of the FY 2014-15 Budget in concern. No approvals were given to either the General Fund Revenue Policy, the Fund Restructure recommendation or the Fund Reserves Policy recommendations. It turned out that the City Council were expecting a copious Sustainable Financial Plan to be presented. The general

La Mirada Reviews Mid-Year Budget La Mirada’s annual mid-year budget report reviewed during Tuesday’s City Council Study Session meeting showed stabilizing revenues and continued cost cutting. The report examined current City revenues and expenditures, and projected estimates for the end of the current fiscal year. The City budget adopted last June projected a modest General Fund surplus of approximately $145,000, and the midyear report shows the surplus exceeding that figure. The City takes a conservative approach to forecasting revenues when preparing the budget. Updated estimates now project operating revenues increasing by $1.96 million or 4.74 percent above budgeted revenues by the end of the fiscal year on June 30. Most of the City’s revenues are received in the second half of the fiscal year. Additionally, the City’s ongoing efforts to reduce costs show expenditures decreasing by about $850,000 or 3 percent. “Revenues continue to show gradual growth, reflecting the general improvement of the local economy,” says City Manager Jeff Boynton. “Combined with efforts to reduce costs, the City is in a slightly improved financial position compared to prior years.” At mid-year, property tax revenue was $1.88 million. Property tax is currently projected to exceed the budgeted figure by $1 million due to steady increases in assessed property values and the City’s conservative approach to revenue forecasting. Sales tax revenue is projected to in-

crease $200,000 or 2.1 percent above the budgeted amount of $13,300,000. The increase in sales tax revenue is attributed to some new business activity and continued moderate growth in the economy. Measure I revenue was $1.46 million at mid-year. It is projected to be $4.8 million at year end, an increase of $800,000 or 20 percent above the conservative budget estimate. This funding source is planned for infrastructure repairs that are currently in the design phase. Construction is expected to begin this summer. Intergovernmental revenue is projected to be $6.8 million or 5.14 percent above the original budget. The City will be reimbursed approximately $2.5 million for costs incurred for the I-5 Freeway advance mitigation work on Trojan Way, Alondra Blvd., Stage Rd., and Firestone Blvd. General Fund expenditures were $11.8 million or 42.5 percent of budgeted appropriations. General Fund expenditures are projected to decrease due primarily to reduced staffing costs. The City is also continuing to make progress on a number of capital projects budgeted this year. Improvements to over 42 residential streets were completed in three phases last fall along with improvements to Alondra Blvd., Stage Rd. , T r o jan Way, and Firestone Blvd. Foster Park Phase III improvements were also completed last year. The Valley View Grade Separation remains in progress with an expected completion in early fall. Work on Imperial Hwy. medians began last month and will be completed in November.

The forward movement of the Downtown Artesia Pedestrian-Oriented Project on Pioneer Boulevard has yet to hurdle the third and hopefully, final obstacle that kept the project from fulfilling its targeted completion by the end of 2014. This is the review on whether the project is consistent to the City’s General Plan that includes the Mobility Element, the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) and traffic impact study. Deputy City Manager Justine Menzel reported during the City Council regular meeting and project update last March 10, “Two of the three outstanding issues have been resolved and these are the acquisitions of letter from the Los Angeles County Fire Department assuring that the new enhanced design of the project has met

Norwalk Officials Break Ground on New Clean Fueling Station By Pete Parker Local, state and federal officials gathered to break ground on a new clean fueling station in Norwalk last week that when completed will be one of the most modern facilities of its type in Southern California. On March 6th Norwalk Mayor Luigi Vernola lead a group of dignitaries to celebrate the beginning of the construction of the multi-million dollar CNG Fueling Station near the Norwalk Civic Center area. Vernola hailed the new project as being a “major accomplishment” for the City of Norwalk in its effort to turn its popular transit fleet “totally green.” The new, “environmentally friendly” (CNG) Compressed Natural Gas fueling station will be actually housed at the Norwalk Transportation and Public Services yard that is located off of Imperial Highway, just east of Norwalk City Hall.

New Norwalk High School Principal ‘Moves’ Long-Time AP Biology Teacher By Kristin Grafft Biology teacher Della Robertson attended the Norwalk-La Mirada Unified School District Board meeting, along with a posse of supportive teachers, to shed light on a recent incident she had with the principal of Norwalk High School. Robertson said she believes the students in her A.P. biology class were treat-

ed unfairly when the new principal, Dr. Ryan Smith, moved Robertson to a different class mid-way through the school year. Robertson explained that she had been teaching a special curriculum she had cultivated based on the ‘Barcoding Life’s Matrix Program’—a program she is specially trained in. Now that Robertson is no longer teaching that class, those students will not be able to finish the curriculum or projects they had been working on. Kelley Rush, the president of the Teachers Association of Norwalk-La Mirada, said that her concern was more about the way Robertson was treated as opposed to just the class change. “It’s unthinkable that a long-time, highly respected employee of this district would be treated with such disrespect. Final ballot arguments were released last month by city officials outlining the pros and cons of a controversial measure that would dramatically change the manner in which Downey is protected. Voters in Downey would receive sample ballots regarding Downey City Council Amendment 14, Section 702 and seeks to have the City Charter amended, removing that states the City would provide for the staffing of the police and fire departments through its own staff and remove

am personally outraged,” Rush said. Rush explained that when Robertson first came to her with the issue she had told Robertson that, although the timing and lack of notice were “inconsiderate and lacked empathy,” the administrator did in fact have the ability to make that change, “according to contract language.” Instead Rush suggested that Robertson send an email to her administrator. “I did not give any false hope that the decision would be reversed, but was hoping it would make Della feel better to at least share her feelings and explain what her students would be missing and projects they would be unable to complete,” Rush said. However, Robertson never received a response to her email, subsequent emails,

notes or requests to meet until three weeks later, “after the principal was directed to do so.” “Della was just dismissed—ignored,” Rush said. Smith could not be reached to comment on the incident. District Superintendant Dr. Ruth Perez spoke on the administrations behalf saying that they really do appreciate all of Robertson’s time, but that the topic could not be discussed any further than that. “When it comes to talking about personnel and scheduling issues we really can’t discuss any of it,” she said. In regards to the ‘Barcoding Life’s Matrix Program,’ Perez said that it is not part of the College Board curriculum. She added that if Robertson would like to teach the program after class or outside of school, that offer has been extended to her.

the requirement that a two-thirds advisory vote was necessary before the City Council could consider alternative methods or agreements for providing police and fire services. In 1998 Downey city voters were supposedly “duped” into passing a poorly drafted Charter Amendment known as Section 702. That specific amendment allowed the Council to make decisions regarding Police Safety, Fire Department and Paramedic Protection, stating that Section 702 did not allow voter input. The City council has outsourced emergency medical transport services and city jail operations to private companies. Charter 14 was written to restore the voting public the right to choose, by majority vote, which public or private entity would best provide cost effective and efficient fire and police services to Downey. In a rebuttal on February 7, 2014, the City Council stated citizens “must keep” Downey Fire Department and Police Department in the hands of the voters and not in the hands of politicians, unions or special interest groups. Fifteen former city Mayors unanimously agreed and signed a Declaration of Argument / Rebuttals in the issue to vote NO, stating that by voting No, the citizens’ of Downey would remain in control of their own Police and Fire Departments. These documents were considered officially filed. Public Examination period was held through February 28, 2014.

During this time any member of the public was able to obtain a copy from the City Clerk’s office. In a press release dated March 11, 2014, the City moved to dismiss a meritless Strategic Lawsuit Against Public Participation [ SLAPP]; which charged the Downey Fire Association of trying to mislead the public. This was to ensure that Downey citizens fully understoond the consequences of their vote for Charter Amendment 14 on the June 3, 2014 ballot. In legal papers filed March 11, 2014 the following was clearly pointed out in the document: “The Downey Fire Association is a co-sponsor of the Charter amendment as part of the Association’s long-standing efforts, dating back to 1997, to require the City to contract for fire services with the Los Angeles County Fire Department.” The Association has spent over $124,000 through the end of December 2013 on the measure, including repeatedly threatening lawsuits against the City. The ballot title proposed by the Association lawyers would be a “blatant falsehood” and comes on the heels of widespread citizen complaints of fraud in the initiative’s signature gathering process. A motion by City officials has also filed to recover the City’s attorney’s fees and costs, estimated at $150,000 so far. The next hearing in the case is on March 18, 2014 and the City’s anti-SLAPP motion will be heard on May 27, 2014.

Cerritos

The following information is provided by Hews Media Group-Community Newspapers as a community service. There were 21 Part I felony crimes investigated during this week’s reporting period, which is a significant increase from the 11 reported the previous week. The following is a breakdown of the reported crimes by category: two robberies; one aggravated assault; four residential burglaries (the same as the previous two weeks); one commercial burglary; seven vehicle burglaries; five grand thefts; and one attempted vehicle theft. Deputies made five felony arrests, 20 misdemeanor arrests, five warrant arrests, and issued 140 traffic citations. The Sheriff’s dispatch center also received 286 calls for service, an increase over the 2014 weekly average of 255 calls. The first robbery occurred on 3/4 at 5:15 a.m. A woman living in the 11300 block of Candor Street went into her garage and sat down in her car when she was suddenly accosted by a male suspect in his 20s. The suspect pointed a handgun at her and demanded her purse. She handed the suspect her purse and he ran to a waiting vehicle and fled the area. The second robbery occurred two days later on Pioneer Boulevard near Gridley Park. At about 2:30 p.m., a 13-year-old Cerritos resident was walking down the sidewalk near the park when a younger teenage suspect pushed him down and ran off with his cell phone. The felony assault occurred on 3/7 and involved two co-workers at a business in the 16000 block of Arthur Street. An argument between the two ended up in the parking lot where a fight ensued. One combatant reported that he was knocked to the ground and kicked multiple times. There were four residential burglaries this past reporting period, the same as the previous week. On 3/3 a woman was arrested for burglary in the 17300 block of Grayland Avenue. The woman entered the home through a rear door, and when she returned a second time later in the afternoon, deputies were called. She claimed to be a real estate agent, but she was taken into custody when items from the home were found in her vehicle. On 3/5 a kitchen window was entered at a home in the 13400 block of Darvalle Street. A watch and about $4,400 in cash were stolen. Thanks to an alert neighbor, detectives have some good suspect and vehicle information and are actively working this case. Also on 3/5, during the day, someone removed a rear

window screen from a home in the 13700 block of Aclare Street but did not enter the residence. Finally, on 3/9 during the day, a suspect kicked in the front door of a home in the 12500 block of Destino Street and took an undetermined amount of jewelry. The commercial/other structure burglary involved a generator that was stolen from a construction site in the 18800 block of Pioneer Boulevard. Seven vehicle burglaries occurred this past week, four in residential areas and three in public lots. The first two incidents reported were at the same location in the 12400 block of Dawn Lane. Overnight between 3/2-3 a suspect took a cell phone and possibly additional unknown property from a Camry and a Tahoe. The third vehicle burglary occurred overnight on 3/8-9 in the 11300 block of Felson Street. Someone shattered the rear window on a Yukon and stole the third row seat. The final vehicle burglary in a residential area occurred in the 13500 block of Abana Street sometime between 3/5-7, and also involved the loss of a SUV’s third row seat. (SUV third row seats are frequent targets, so check out prevention strategies at www.safercerritos.com.) Sometime between 2/28-3/3 a suspect pried open a side compartment on a truck parked in the 13100 block of Alondra Boulevard and took a portable generator. During evening hours on 3/7 a cell phone was stolen from a Yukon parked near the LA Fitness on Alondra Boulevard. And sometime between 3/7-9 someone broke into several vehicles parked in an industrial area in the 13200 block of Alondra Boulevard, but the loss, if any, is unknown at this time. A housekeeper was reported to have stolen $4,000 in jewelry from a home in the 19200 block of Allingham Avenue. This crime apparently occurred back in December and the housekeeper has admitted to the theft. On 3/3 two suspects exited the Walmart in the Towne Center with three computer tablets valued at about $1,400. They were able to escape in a dark pickup truck. Victoria’s Secret at Los Cerritos Center reported that a shoplifter took clothing valued at $1,375. Sometime overnight on 3/7-8 someone stole a tailgate valued at $5,000 from a truck parked in a driveway in the 17700 block of Alora Avenue. And the final grand theft reported the loss of liquor valued at about $1,600 that was stolen from the Ralph’s market on South Street. The lone vehicle theft this past week was actually an attempted theft as the vehicle was not taken. This incident occurred during overnight hours on 3/7-8 and involved a Chevy Silverado pickup parked in a driveway in the 16800 block of Windward Avenue.

Robbery An armed robbery occurred at a business on the 15300 block of La Mirada Blvd. The suspect stole cash from the location. The incident remains under investigation. Aggravated Assault A domestic assault between a dating couple occurred near Alicante Rd. and Santa Gertrudes Ave. The suspect was arrested for battery. A suspect was taken into custody for attempting to start a fight on the 15200 block of Rosecrans Ave. No injuries were sustained. Residential Burglary A burglary to an attached residential garage was reported on the 15200 block of Cheshire St. A firearm was stolen from the unsecured garage. Vehicle Burglary Two separate vehicle burglaries were reported on the 13300 block of Beach Blvd. A laptop was stolen in one incident, and a purse in the other burglary. A burglary was reported on the 15600 block of Calverton Dr. The front driver’s door lock of the SUV was punched in. It appears the suspects attempted to take the 3rd row seat. Grand Theft A theft from an unlocked vehicle was reported on the 16100 Rosecrans Ave. A laptop computer and various other items were stolen. Various tools were taken from an uncovered pick-up truck bed on the 15900 block of Formby Drive. A theft occurred on the 14300 block of Alondra Blvd. Tires were stolen from two big-rig trucks parked at the location. Road Closures Enforced for Santa Ana Freeway Widening Project By Rico Dizon As part of the $1.6 billion Santa Ana Freeway (1-5) HOV Widening Projects, Caltrans closed one lane in both directions of Imperial Highway between the Imperial Highway Bridge and Pioneer Boulevard for three months beginning first week of March and until June of

2014. The project consists of constructing one carpool and one general purpose lane in each direction from Los Angeles/ Orange County lines to Interstate 605. It will also widen Imperial Highway and reconstruct the sidewalks. In implementing the road closure, the far right lane (Lane # 3) will be closed in both the west-bound and east-bound directions. One west-bound lane on Imperial Highway (IH) will be closed from the IH bridge to Pioneer Boulevard. One east-bound lane on Imperial Highway (IH) will be closed from just before the IH bridge to Paddison Avenue. Caltrans clarifies that motorists, pedestrians and emergency responders will have access at all times during the temporary closures. Local commuters are encouraged to allow extra time to arrive at their respective destinations. Continued from page 1 public records request between Mike Sisson, a high-ranking Vice President at Pacifica Services, and several other people sent from his office computer system located at CB. The emails were written and exchanged during regular business hours, and many were also generated by Pacifica Services executive Scott Hennessey. Pasadena based Pacifica Services is owned and operated by Ernest Camacho, a very powerful and politically well-connected businessman in Los Angeles. Camacho donated large amounts of political cash to water district official’s campaigns all over Southern California including current CB Directors Leticia Vasquez and James Roybal. In addition to Sisson and Hennessey, others who were involved in the emails included James Cathcart, who at that time worked for HDR Engineering as well as Robert Shaffer, an attorney at Sedgwick Law Firm LLP. Both HDR and Sedgwick have secured hefty contracts granted in the past by CB officials. Others participants in the emails included Steve Know who is an attorney at SK Law Group, Dave Hill, who at the time was a top executive at CB and who briefly served as Interim General Manager at the besieged agency, and another Pacifica official, Executive Vice President Steve Carpino. Ironically, most of the parties involved in the “email exchange group” were also allegedly involved in the CB $2.75 Million “secret slush fund” that is now part of a massive criminal investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the US Attorney’s Office, the Internal Revenue Service and other federal agencies. Over the length of the emails, which started in 2008, the 2,500 emails reviewed by HMG-CN showed a pattern of blatant disregard by Sisson toward his consulting job at CB. In the emails, he continually makes disparaging remarks about current and past employees at the agency as well as current and former elected directors. The emails are being sent in batches to HMG-CN; there is reportedly a staggering 16,000 emails that Sisson sent in his time at CB. Sources tell HMG-CN that over 80% of the 16,000 emails are extremely offensive. Shockingly, during the time the emails were being sent by Sisson, he was billing CB $160 per hour; Hennessey billed CB $136 per hour. The emails graphically show that Sisson and his email group were homophobic racists who liked to pass around offensive pictures and descriptions of people including Muslims, Palestinians, Hispanics, Blacks, Asians, Seniors, naked woman, obese people, liberals, immigrants, WalMart shoppers and ” rednecks.” Sisson, who touts himself as a Conservative Republican in his emails, also sent extremely offensive emails pertaining to President Barack Obama, First Lady Michelle Obama, Rep. Nancy Pelosi, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and other well-known “liberal” U.S. politicians. CB Board President Phil Hawkins told HMG-CN in an interview on Saturday, “when HMG-CN informed me of the content of these emails I was extremely shocked and offended. This is one of the reasons why we have had trouble with this particular organization and I will be looking into these emails and contacting our lawyers for possible legal action. When called for comment, current General Manager Tony Perez said he “could not comment due to the ongoing litigation, but if what you describe is true, I personally find it highly offensive and an affront to the values of our organization.”

Councilman Gerard Goedhart thought, “The financial plan is not in fact sustainable, how can we go forward if we do not have a sustainable budget?” In addition Goedhart asked, “Assumptions must be more realistic unlike for instance, using Tesoros’s sales tax revenues for the operating expenses knowing that the company that replaced BP before has barely started and is still highly volatile.” Council Member Steve Hwangbo remarked, “Although we welcome parts of your concept which is the result of our prior negotiations, nevertheless, I need a more detailed and thorough financial plan.” He said, I noticed a huge expenditure in the Police Department. In previous meeting, he suggested, “instead of hiring outside consultants to undertake a study on how to make the department lean and mean, I think our police chief is capable of doing the task.” In the presentation, the General Fund for FY 2014-15 begun with a surplus of $689,061 but ended with a $226,261 deficit after the 11- year projection despite assuming full use of Tesoros’ tax proceeds. The expenditures caught up with the revenues and eventually surpassed the latter in the last five years of the presented plan. Sources specify the city has to cutback, primarily by reducing expenses including the non-replacement of vacating employees and demanding overtime from the current staff. Local residents believe the city needs to find other alternative sources of revenue. The City Manager and Staff are dealing with the task of delivering the revised Sustainable Financial Plan as requested by the City Council for the next meeting on March 18. Coincidentally, just 10 days shy prior to ending the interim work of Don Pruyn who presented the plan. Pruyn was hired in October last year shortly after the city’s former Finance Director Michael Solorza resigned.

For the city to choose, hire and analyze company services from one among these bids, we are looking at a new timeline of 5 to 11 months for the whole process.” Council Member Ali Taj found the quote “too high,” and both he and Mayor Tony Lima were of the opinion “the project is taking too long.” Lima said, “I have been with the City Council for 7 years now and we are still discussing about the same project. As we resolved one prob-

lem, another one kept showing up. Let us not expect a perfect plan.” City Attorney Kevin Ennis confided, “Former Mayor John Lyon had done outstanding projects for the city but in his original plan to have a more vibrant downtown in Artesia, he somehow forgot to factor a few issues including the vehicular and pedestrian traffic as outcome of the plan. Also, there are necessary litigations involved due to the deviations of the plan from the city’s Constitution and General Plan.” To fast tract the project, Rawlings offered to sit down with the City Attorney and the current engineer to revise the previous traffic study and present the inhouse study together with the bids to the City Council for a thorough “pros” and “cons” discussion in the next project update and City Council meeting scheduled on April 14.

Firestone Boulevard Bridge Replacement Project at the San Gabriel River Construction starts April 14 HMG-CN News Service The bridge project will involve the replacement of the existing Firestone Boulevard Bridge in its entirety with a new bridge which meets current standards, with wider sidewalks, center median and shoulders. The same number of travel lanes (six) will be provided. The City of Norwalk is the lead agency on the project. On March 4, 2014, the City of Norwalk City Council awarded a contract to Reyes Construction of Pomona in the amount of $7,586,493 for the construction of the bridge. Based on the bid received from Reyes Construction, the total estimated cost of the project, including construction engineering, contract administration and contingency, is approximately $9.5 million. The project will be funded through a federal grant, which will fund 88.53% of the project cost and a Proposition C discretionary grant received through the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority, which will fund the remaining 11.47% of the project cost. Construction is scheduled to commence in April 2014 and be completed by December 2015. The project will be constructed in multiple stages. A description of each stage and estimated duration is below. •Preparation/mobilization: Est. duration: March-April 2014 (1.5 mos.); • Stage 0: Underground utilities and new pier walls will be constructed underneath the existing bridge within the San Gabriel River. Est. duration: April-June 2014 (2 mos.); •Stage 1: The north (westbound) side of the existing bridge will be demolished and reconstructed. The south (eastbound) side of the bridge will remain open. The incident occurred in the 13000 block of Rosecrans Avenue shortly after midnight. Both Chaidez and Montoya were apparently walking with their bicycles when they were struck. Now, Artesia has to regroup with an experienced squad, but also knowing that the league is getting tougher. “I thought going into the last game we were sitting kind of pretty,” Gaoghagan said. “We had who we wanted to throw. We just couldn’t get anything going.

“Obviously you want to make playoffs whenever you can and each year is a little bit different,” he later added. “Obviously we don’t have the talent that we had in 2003. So, we basically have to find the most athletic kids we can and just coach them.” Senior Tyler Brown, who pitched the final four road league games last season and went 3-6 overall, leads the pitching staff that will be deeper in numbers than in recent seasons. The infield is solid with senior Osbiel Montano and juniors Marcus Johnson, who was the catcher last season, Matt Munoz and Javier Vasquez. Senior center fielder Diego Castaneda is the leader of the outfield. With the exception of tying Norwalk for fourth place in 2011, the Pioneers have finished in the bottom three of the league since last going to the playoffs. During that time, Artesia has five wins over Norwalk, two wins over Bellflower and none against La Mirada and Mayfair. Those four teams have been consistent playoff participants but John Glenn is expected to be much improved this season. Artesia definitely has its work cut out for 2014. “I would say the top half is not as good as it was and I think the bottom half is probably better than they have been,” Gaoghagan said.

Parsonage graduated from Cerritos 20 years ago while Walling pitched for the Pioneers in 2001 and 2002. They replace Chris Aquino, who had been at the school the past three seasons.

TO ADVERTISE CALL 800-901-7211 “I thought it was a great opportunity to bring a great guy in to coach with me,” Parsonage said of Walling. “But I feel that we could have an opportunity to turn this program around back to how it was in the late 1980s when they won a CIF championship in 1989.” Parsonage said Aquino left the program with a basic foundation of fundamentals and while the players aren’t advanced yet, the co-head coaches have already seen changes in the mental part of the game in a short amount of time. The pitching staff is solid with senior Eugene Chang and junior Jacob Carter along with another junior, newcomer Ian Rosenburg. Junior Justin Fujii is the primary first baseman when not on the mound. However, the offense takes a hit as the top four hitters in league action all graduated. Parsonage said he and Walling don’t have super high expectations for this season other than to build from game to game and not to take a step backwards. “We’re going to turn it [around],” Parsonage said. “It’s going to take a little time, but we will turn it. I know we’ll turn it. It’s just the competitors that we are. We refuse to lose. We’re going to give these guys every bit of knowledge that we have in order to try to make them successful.”

But all that being said, that was last year. This year’s team has a different emphasis, a different focus and a different culture to its own.” The Gladiators will be young this season and Perez says the emphasis will be on getting back to the fundamentals of defense. The pitching staff is very experienced and will make up for the lack of power from last season. Senior George Castillo went 5-0 last season as the third option behind Andrew Encinas and Greg Humbert, both of whom combined to go 15-2. Castillo and senior Octavio Lara, who didn’t start pitching until last February, have signed to go to Central Arizona University. According to Perez, senior Valentin Flores might have the most upside out of everyone on the pitching staff. The core of the Gahr culture, Perez says, will be senior shortstop Jaime Estrada (.479 last season), also going to Central Arizona University, junior catcher and second baseman Joe Dressel (.327) and sophomore third baseman Jesus Salazar, who was an outfielder last season. Junior left fielder Leotis Johnson III (.317) and sophomore catcher David Balboa, who was primarily a designated hitter last season, also bring some offense with them. We’re very lucky to have them and we’re excited to see what they can bring to the table this season.” Despite getting the transfers and already knowing that the league has been dominated by La Mirada and Mayfair recently, Brooks isn’t automatically giving his squad the league title, especially since the Eagles haven’t beaten Mayfair since 2007 and have one win over La Mirada since at least 1999. “Basically our goal, what we’ve discussed with this team, is to go out there and compete and play well every day,” Brooks said. “If we worry about ourselves and play like we’re capable of, it’s going to be an exciting year. We just want to play better, make our school proud, make the city proud and go out there and play an exciting brand of baseball.”

Valley Christian dropped to 1-4 after falling to Mayfair 5-0 this past Monday at home. The Lady Crusaders will travel to Ontario Christian on Tuesday and go to Paramount on Thursday. BOYS SOCCER Despite falling to St. Margaret’s 3-0 in a California Interscholastic FederationSouthern Section Division VI semifinal game on Mar. 4, the Crusaders were still awarded a berth in the Division III Southern California Regional state playoffs for the first time in school history. V.C., seeded sixth, upset third seeded and San Diego-based Gompers Prep 2-0 this past Monday as freshman Clay D’Amico scored twice. The win set up a rematch with second seeded St. Margaret’s this past Wednesday where the Crusaders lost 3-1. V.C.’s lone tally was from senior Jeremy Stanley. Gahr’s baseball team has dominated the area for a long time but early on in the 2014 season, Cerritos is trying to erase the bad memories of futility for the past five seasons. The Dons, who at one point trailed visiting Downey Calvary Chapel 6-2, erupted for 13 runs in the bottom of the sixth and blasted the Grizzlies 21-8 in a Newport Elks Tournament contest this past Wednesday. Cerritos improved to 3-1, its best start to a season since opening the 2003 season with five straight wins. The Dons had begun each of the last five seasons losing a combined 24 straight games and had not won a season opener since 2008. In addition, the 21 runs are the most since last season when Cerritos scored 17 at Rancho Alamitos and the 13 runs in one inning are the most since putting together a dozen runs in a 16-6 victory at Rancho Alamitos back on Apr. 21, 1998. Cerritos took a 7-6 lead backed by a five-run third inning as senior left fielder Juan Rodriguez, junior first baseman Justin Fujii and senior designated hitter Eugene Chang had consecutive run scoring hits. Then with the Grizzlies holding an 8-7 lead heading into the bottom of the sixth, the hosts batted around nearly twice, picking up 10 hits in the process. Fujii smacked a three-run home run while sophomore pinch hitter Jeffrey Liang went two for two and scored twice in the inning. Chang and Rodriguez each collected three hits as part of an 18-hit attack as the Dons will end the tournament today before visiting Southlands Christian on Tuesday. Also participating in the tournament is Gahr and the Gladiators advanced to today’s championship game of the Frank Lerner Division after edging Mater Dei 2-1 in eight innings this past Wednesday.
