ore than 400 family members and friends were among the invited guests at the Artesia Community Center on May 22 to celebrate the city of Artesia’s 50th Anniversary at the 2009 Miss Artesia and Miss Artesia Teen Pageant. Pageant Director Linda Gonzalez said that this year’s pageant was “the biggest we’ve ever had in the seven years that I have been the director. Our theme for the pageant was the Fabulous Fifties in celebration of the city’s 50th anniversary.” Gonzalez wanted to wish each of the beautiful contestants “the best of luck! It was a great pleasure to have them participate in this year’s pageant activities.” Gonzalez said the ages of the 18 contestants range from 13 for a Miss Teen contestant, up to 25 for a Miss Artesia contestant. The judges considered the contestants after each was interviewed, gave an onstage speech, answered a question from the judges and the way they presented themselves on stage in their gowns.

Editor’s Note: Father Denis Edward O’Brien, USMC, wrote the following:
Hawaiian Garden residents filled the city council chamber to capacity, venting their anger and disgust at the way the media had described the city in the recent gang bust throughout Southern California at the City Council meeting May 27. They were particular incensed with media reports that one in 15 people living in Hawaiian Gardens was a gang member. That statement was said by Sal Hernandez, the FBI’s top agent in Los Angeles and quoted throughout the media. The residents stated that was not true, and accused the Lakewood Sheriff deputies who patrol the city streets of holding a grudge against city residents because of the killing of Deputy Jerry Ortiz by a Varrio Hawaiian Garden gang member four years ago. Hawaiian Gardens Mayor Michael Gomez said there have been many questions about the city’s role in the probe. He said the operation was the culmination of a four-year investigation that included the Attorney Generals Office, the FBI, ATF, and the IRS Criminal Investigation office. He said there were 80 locations under investigation with only 20 that were located in Hawaiian Gardens. “The day the operation began he was called

Free Household Hazardous And Electronic Waste In Norwalk On July 11 Los Angeles County residents can dispose of household hazardous waste including unused pharmaceuticals, antifreeze, car batteries, used motor oil, paint, pesticides; home-generated sharps waste such as hypodermic needles, pen needles, syringes, lancets, and intravenous needles; universal waste including household batteries, fluorescent light bulbs; and electronic waste (e-waste) such as TVs and monitors, computers, VCRs, stereos, and cell phones at the next free Countywide Household Hazardous Waste Roundup. The Roundup will be held in Norwalk, at Cerritos College in Stadium Parking Lot C-1, 11110 Alondra Blvd., on Saturday, July 11, 2009 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Residents can bring up to 15 gallons or 125 pounds of household hazardous waste per vehicle to the Roundup. “The Roundups offer County of Los Angeles residents a convenient way to discard common household products, e-waste and universal waste such as household batteries and fluorescent light bulbs that are hazardous to people and the environment if not properly disposed of,” said County of Los Angeles Supervisor Don Knabe (4th Dist.), Chairman of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors. “And, even though old computer monitors and key boards can be reused, refurbished, or recycled, electronic waste is a growing problem.” We can all do our part to avoid the serious pollution problems that result when these items end up in landfills or storm drains,” said Cerritos Mayor Bruce Barrows.

Cerritos businesses must obtain permit prior to pruning trees A tree pruning permit is required for any entity wishing to prune or trim trees within commercial, industrial and multi-family zoned areas, as well as common areas within all residential developments that are governed by homeowners associations. In addition, all tree trimmers working in the City of Cerritos must have a Cerritos business license. Cerritos business owners who wish to trim their trees should contact the City’s Public Works department to obtain a $150 tree pruning permit. As part of the permit process, the City will send a certified arborist to the business, who will talk with your tree-trimming contractor to explain the proper tree trimming techniques, which are established by the International Society of Arboriculture to promote tree health and stability. The certified arborist will also inspect the trees after they are pruned to ensure proper pruning. Proper tree-trimming techniques include removing no more than 25 percent of a tree’s foliage or mass. Penalties will be imposed for improper tree trimming activities pursuant to Chapter 9.75 of the Cerritos Municipal Code. For more information on tree care or to obtain a tree pruning permit, contact the Cerritos Public Works Department at (562) 916-1220.

we have a few bad apples, but what city doesn’t. He pointed to Long Beach and said they have a big gang problem, more so than Hawaiian Gardens, but all we hear is Hawaiian Gardens. He said, “We are a good city.” Councilwoman Michiko OyamaCanada agreed and said she didn’t believe for every 15 residents there was a gang member. Lakewood Captain Christy Guyovich told those present that the Sheriff’s Department initiated the investigation, but had to call in federal officers because the Department could not do the investigation alone. The Fed’s took over the investigation. “The city did not know this operation was happening until the very end. The Lakewood Station only provided the site for the press conference but did not know what would be said.” She said their mission was to go out after the leaders of the gang. The various agencies took what we gave them and ran with it, ultimately indicting 147 people. The Grand jury legally indicted them and the Sheriff’s Department was part of the investigation team. She pointed out that there was not just one gang but many others involved in the investigation. “It was not just in Hawaiian Gardens,” she stated, “It was all over Los Angeles County, Riverside County with 30 other cities affected by this operation.” The residents were not satisfied and accused the councilmember’s of being out of touch with the community. They wanted to know why their complaints about harassment by sheriff deputies were not investigated and taken to Lakewood. They said if the deputies didn’t like the way they were dressed they were accused of being gang members. ”They’re supposed to make our streets safe, not make us afraid to go out on them.” Capt Guyovich said the Lakewood Station does not get many complaints from Hawaiian Gardens. At this point the council was accused of not being in touch with the community. “You need to reach out to us,” was the basis of the comments.

La Palma Kiwanis Dedicate Tree in Honor of Former Mayor By Larry Caballero Kiwanis President George Mast and community leaders dedicated a tree in the memory of former Mayor Duane Schuster at Walker Junior High School in La Palma May 7. “Duane was very active in the city for over 30 years who always showed up early for any project and stayed until the dust cleared,” said Mast. Schuster died last year at the age of 76, and the city honored him as its Honorary Grand Marshall for its La Palma Days Parade. A native of Badger, Iowa, he lived in La Palma for 38 years. Schuster was well known in the city for supporting numerous community causes. La Palma volunteer Bert Poan

When purchasing paintbrushes and roller covers, try to buy the highest quality that you can afford as it really does make a difference. If you aren't sure what to buy, choose rollers for large spaces, traditional paintbrushes for smaller spaces and thin angled paintbrushes for corners and trim. Paintbrushes and roller covers come in natural and synthetic materials. "Use a synthetic brush when you use latex paint since latex can make natural bristles frizzy," says Manfredini. "Natural brushes are best when used with oil-based finishes."
Get started With the right paint and tools on hand, its time to get to work. Push the furniture into the middle of the room and cover with a plastic tarp or old sheet. Next, put painter's tape along the borders of the space, such as the doors, windows and trim. Paint in wide brush strokes and alternate the direction you paint to avoid stripes on the wall. In no time, you'll have a beautiful room to enjoy. For more painting tips and advice, visit the painting tips section at acehardware.com, or stop by your neighborhood Ace Hardware store.

Exterior Improvements Speed Home Offers, Lower Costs With a "For Sale" sign in your front yard, you want potential buyers to take a good, long look at your property. And even if you're not planning a move, you want to be sure you protect and maintain your home to keep future repairs at a minimum. Real estate is a tough market today. If you're a seller, creating curb appeal is a key to entice potential buyers to come inside for a second look. Home selling experts predict that as many as 40 percent of potential buyers reject a home based on their first impression of the front of the house. The general appearance of the front yard is the single largest factor shaping impressions of your home. Even if your home is not on the market, projects that improve your home's curbside appeal can also create a safer home, help protect your assets and give the entire front of the house a beautiful look. "Driveways and sidewalks are the first impression people have of your home. Well-maintained driveways and sidewalks create a strong first impression. On the other hand, if they are worn, cracked, stained and faded, that creates messages about what someone might find inside the home," says home improvement industry expert Gordon Blickle of Gardner-Gibson. Driveways are often overlooked, spoiling an otherwise manicured landscape. Unless it is severely cracked, crumbling or poses a safety hazard, there's no need to spend thousands on removing and replacing it. There are easier options to make over a tired driveway that will boost the
curb appeal of a home.

Seal of approval Restore damaged asphalt by filling cracks with an asphalt crack filler or drive patch. Then renew the look of old, worn blacktop driveways with fast-drying Black Jack Ultra-Maxx 1000, a flexible, longlasting filler and sealer with a 10-year guarantee. Or seal with new Gardner Pro7, with no mixing required and a jet-black seven-year finish.
Beautify the borders Instead of having to keep the edge of the lawn trimmed against the driveway, create a "buffer" strip with a decorative rock garden or plant flowers along the path to build an inviting drive up to the home. If your driveway is adjacent to your neighbor's driveway, plant shrubs and flower beds between them for a small privacy wall.
Enlighten your view An economical way to create a custom-home look is adding inexpensive landscape lighting. Lowvoltage or solar lighting creates a softly-lit path to border the driveway, sidewalk and garden beds. While upgrading the look of the entire home, lighting deters unwanted visitors, improves home visibility, welcomes guests with a safe lighted path and decreases the chance of someone accidentally driving onto the lawn.

Norwalk’s Season Ends at Home Again, Jimenez Throws Two-Hitter By Loren Kopff It wasn’t supposed to end this way for Norwalk’s softball team, which finally broke the barrier of not having a piece of the Suburban League title. A week after doubling up La Mirada in the regular season finale, the Lancers were hoping to build on the program’s best season in school history, but one hit quickly changed that. With two outs in the top of the sixth inning and Don Lugo’s Melanie Fagaly facing a 1-2 count, she launched a pitch from senior Stephanie Jimenez over the left center fence and it held up as the Lancers were upset 1-0 in a California Interscholastic Federation-Southern Section Division II first round game. It’s the third straight season Norwalk’s season has ended with a loss at home. Norwalk concludes the 2009 season at 19-9 overall, just the second time in three years that the Lancers have won 19 games and third in school history. “It was a great battle and Stephanie did a phenomenal job on the mound,” said

Norwalk head coach Paulette Gasporra. “Defense-wise, I think we did a fantastic job. You take away the home run and you’re at a 0-0 ball game.” Indeed, Jimenez was in a groove with the exception of the home run. She struck out seven of the first 11 batters she faced and allowed a walk and an infield single through the first three frames. On that infield single, Suzie Hernandez laced a 3-0 pitch right back at Jimenez, which

Continued from page 13 knocked the hurler to the ground. Between innings, a noticeable bruise was seen just under her neck. But Jimenez stayed poised and didn’t allow another hit until Fagaly’s home run. Ironically, Fagaly had fouled off five pitches in her previous at-bat. Jimenez capped off her final game in a Norwalk uniform by striking out 14, walking two and yielding five base runners. Meanwhile, Don Lugo’s Trina Guillen was trying to match her counterpart and had allowed two hits through the first five innings while striking out seven. With one out in the bottom of the second, sophomore shortstop Anai Zarate reached on an error and went to third on a single from junior right fielder Jordan Ancona. But Norwalk’s golden opportunity came in the bottom of the sixth when Jimenez hit a line drive to right, which was followed by an infield single from sophomore second baseman Lorraine Fitzgerald. After that came a rocket to center from senior first baseman Michelle Contreras but with no outs, Jimenez was unable to score. “I think at first, [Jimenez] was coming in and then the way the outfielder moved in…you can replay it in your head all you want,” Gasporra said. “We just needed to score.” On the next pitch, sophomore catcher Claudia Torres forced Jimenez at home before Zarate lined out to second with pinch runner Courtney Fischer being doubled up. Again, the Lancers had a shot to score in the seventh with two outs and two on after senior left fielder Celina Hernandez blooped a single into shallow left. But Jimenez lined out to short and the dream of the school’s first 20-win season died. “This season was a great season,” Gasporra said. “This was the first time we’re hanging a banner at Norwalk, which was our first goal. Our second goal was to play at [Deanna Manning] Stadium on June 6, but you take one goal at a time. Our program keeps on growing.” One of the highlights for the Lancers this past season was defeating La Mirada at home; the Matadores have lost six league games since 2001 with half coming to Norwalk. The Lancers lose only Contreras, Hernandez and Jimenez along with utility player Cristina Jacobo and the prospects of
another league title, this time all to themselves, looks very bright in 2010. The only thing that it still undetermined is the status of Gasporra, who has an 86-64-1 record in six years at the varsity level and has improved her league record and league finish each year. Her son, who is an athlete at St. Paul High, will be a senior and she wants to see his games. “It’s still 50-50,” Gasporra said. “I would love to come back as an assistant just because of my son. It’s really tough to leave the program but it’s like family out here. I have my own family that I have to support. My dad helps me coach; he’s been out on the softball field since I was five, so it’s hard to leave. These girls are fantastic and even my lower classmen, you still want to stick around for them.”

Fine Vintage Motown: Four Tops and Temptations Wow Cerritos By Glen Creason The answer to every ailment in society nowadays is “bad economy” and you could see it in effect over the weekend at Cerritos. Not that folks did not pack the place and spend their hard earned cash but they saved some dough and travel by performing a little staycation right here in Cerritos. Instead of traveling to Vegas for one of those big splashy, high voltage shows they just drove over to Center drive and got one here with no dazzle held back. The genre was R&B in the Motown style which was delivered with passion and certainly experience. On the docket were two of the biggest names from the era of driving beats, funky lyrics and lots of African-American style known by those of a certain vintage as the Tops and the Temps. The Four Tops and the Temptations have a legacy to protect and they make sure they are not giving their fans a wan rehash when they perform. On this night both groups gave it all they had and certainly pleased the faithful who stood frequently and once in a while actually clapped in time to the old favorites. To be fair, they participated pretty well and even sang verses when they were not even asked to do so. The Four Tops still have an original in Duke Fakir and some veterans along with Lawrence Payton Jr. who is second generation Tops. They played, as did the Temps in front of a full orchestra that included a knockout, eight man horn section. No need to experiment here and they did not but just played what they were bid
to do by the talking back crowd, including “Baby I Need Your Loving,” “Bernadette,” It’s the Same Old Song,” “Reach Out,” “Standing in the Shadows of Love,” and the gold-plated classic “I Can’t Help Myself” known by zillions as “Sugar Pie Honey Bunch.” There were lots more music and playful kidding from members but even the ballads did not resonate like the stuff we used to hear on KGFJ back in the day. The Temptations were all that and more. They also had an original in Otis Williams and an act that has sparkled for almost fifty years. Why fix it if it aint broke and the crisp choreography, energetic singing and wonderful songs are pretty good on their own but these guys are way better than just true to the spirit. They work hard and the songs sound fresh and powerful with the sweat up on stage plenty real from gents who have sung these songs hundreds of times. Part of the success is certainly the young powerhouse Bruce “Big Sexy” Williamson who is a sort of Department of Water and Power dynamo all on his own. Yet, all the members were marvelous singing and dancing with some all-time great songs like “How Sweet It Is to Be Loved by You,” “the Way You Do the Things You Do,” “Aint Too Proud to Beg,” “I Wish It Would Rain,” “Papa Was a Rolling Stone,” “Get Ready,” “Since I Lost My Baby,” “The Girls Alright With Me” and the one they will be tapping their feet to in the year four thousand “My Girl” that had every man woman and child singing along at the end.
