The turnout of community members was great and many of them took part by making designer ties, handcrafted handbags and fashionable jewelry. Even the Superintendent of ABC Unified School District, Dr. Gary Smuts, enjoyed trying his hand at creating bobbin lace. (See photo above) Many student volunteers attended and the weather cooperated, making it not too hot and not too cold for Line Dancing lessons and Cardio Salsa workouts. Those who stopped and visited for awhile discovered that besides teaching a variety of useful and creative arts and crafts, many of the Adult School teachers and students organize ways to give back to our local community and

Address Canvassers Taking to the Streets The 2010 Census has launched its next operation, Address Canvassing. A preliminary wave began on March 29th, and the mass effort launched on April 6, 2009. The entire phase will conclude by June 19, 2009. During Address Canvassing, the Census Bureau will put to work approximately 140,000 people to canvass all known streets and roads throughout the country. The canvassers will identify every living quarter where people live or could potentially live, and verify more than 145 million addresses. For the first time in Decennial Census history, census workers will confirm, add, and delete addresses using a GPSequipped hand-held computer. Each computer is so secure that it will work only when activated by the fingerprint of its assigned operator. Each building or structure will receive Global Positioning System (GPS) coordinates to make sure it is also recorded in the right location. Census workers also will update maps by adding new roads. This work will ensure that the census address list is complete so that everyone can be counted in the 2010 census.

I think many of our local elected officials have forgotten how to “talk” and “inter act” with those who work as “trusted” public employees at our City Halls, School Districts, and State Legislative offices. For years, I served as a “public” employee with the City of Norwalk, the California State Assembly, the City of Cypress, and the City of Buena Park. I work as a public information officer and municipal communications specialist, and even rose to the ranks of “President-Elect” of the California Public Information Officers Association. OPINION/GUEST COLUMNS/LETTERS TO THE EDITOR and essentially isolated from their party's support as punishment for not towing the party line. Nearly all Republicans in Congress voted against Obama's desperately needed stimulus package while at the same time offering no workable alternative solution to our current economic crisis. In fact, they now proudly trumpet themselves as the "Party of No". Mr. Kauble must have read at least some of this in the news. Mr. Kauble mentions that a recent DHS document "seems to label" all Christian Conservatives and veterans as "more dangerous to national security than Al Queda (sic)". Really? Did anyone of rational thought and not a member of the Fox News staff really say that? No. Just because some domestic terrorists have a disproportionate affiliation with former military service and Christian extremist groups as the document reported, that does not mean that veterans and Christian extremists are all terrorists. Just because there are stupid people does not mean that all people are stupid. If Mr. Kauble has been paying attention to his Republican Party over the past several years, then he has noticed that it is losing elections to Democrats and members to the Democratic Party because it is the Republican Party that has gone out of its way to marginalize those who fail to tow the party line. The only line that the Democratic Party "tows" is the line that includes those who support the disenfranchised, the poor, the hungry and sick, the undereducated, the minorities and the weak. If the Republican Party ever decides to show a genuine" concern for those who are not white, and Christian, and/or upper-middleclass and above, then it will find voters more willing to listen to and debate (and maybe embrace) their ideas. a free ride for medical care, welfare, food stamp, college tuition (I’m missing something, I know it) on the backs of taxpaying, documented, excuse me, legal United States citizens? Are that they know what the Constitution, Declaration of Independence and the Bill of Rights stand for (GASP!)? That they know history and what the intent of our Founding Forefathers for the greatest country on earth were? Or is it that they have some of the highest rated television and radio shows knocking liberal hosts off the air and also putting liberal radio stations out of business and burying NBC, CNN, et al in the ratings and getting this message to the people who have stopped sitting idly by and have taken action against a liberal, socialist agenda administration? Concerning Arlen Spector, no loss. Mr Spector admitted the reason he switched parties was due to the fact he was getting destroyed in his state primary polls, not because the Republican party was going to far right, and he wanted to stay in the Senate. The Republicans never had him and his voting record reflects that. And just in case you missed it, here’s some interesting info about how the Democrats feel about him “coming over”; Senior Senate Democrats are objecting to the deal Majority Leader Harry Reid made with Sen. Arlen Specter, saying they will vote against letting the former Republican shoot to the top of powerful committees after he switches parties. Several Democrats are furious with Sen. Reid (D-Nev.) for agreeing to let Specter (Pa.) keep his seniority, accrued over more than 28 years as a GOP senator. That agreement would allow Specter to leap past senior Democrats on powerful panels — including the Appropriations and Judiciary committees. “I won’t be happy if I don’t get to
chair something because of Arlen Specter,” said Sen. Barbara Mikulski (D-Md.), who sits on the Appropriations Committee with Specter and is fifth in seniority among Democrats, behind Chairman Daniel Inouye (Hawaii) and Sens. Robert Byrd (W.Va.), Patrick Leahy (Vt.) and Tom Harkin (Iowa). “I’m happy with the Democratic order, but I don’t want to be
Dear Publisher:
I read your rant today. Like most liberal blathering it was full of false statements and information from the opening sentence. Since it was emboldened in ink, I saw your rant and did not hear it. I’m a commonsense-thinking conservative.” CNN (22-May-2007) All three have been bombastic but calling some one a racist is a strong accusation! What is that based on? Do You or Someone Close to You Snore?
Snoring is a sign of a restricted airway that becomes relaxed during sleep. The tissues in the back of the throat can start fluttering during the breathing cycles. Although simple snoring usually does not disturb the sleeper it can cause social issues for others.

The incidence of snoring increases with age, weight gain, alcohol use, and prescription medications for sleep aid. Snoring can also be a sign of a more serious disorder called sleep apnea. Sleep apnea is characterized by pauses in breathing from a few seconds to a couple of minutes. This can occur a few times during the night or hundreds of times. It can result in a low oxygen saturation level in the blood starving the tissues and organs. It can result in heart disease and death. A medical doctor can confirm a diagnosis of sleep apnea after carefully reviewing the results of a sleep study test. This is done in sleep study centers and it monitors such criteria as blood oxygen level, REM cycles, and number breathing cessations per hour. You can ask yourself these questions to see if you should seek help. What are my chances of dozing when I sit and read, watch TV, sit in public places, wait for red lights while driving, sit as a passenger in a car, and the likelihood of falling to sleep after lunch? If you are tired or fatigued easily during the day it would be very prudent to consult with your physician for advice. Sleep apnea can be initiated from the brain or from physical factors that obstruct and collapse the breathing space. Exactly where the collapse occurs in the back of the throat can determine the treatment alternatives. This is referred to as obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Treatments for OSA can vary from anti-snoring devices made by dentists, sleeping on specially tilted pillows, neck

wellness resource slings, or wearing facemasks attached to positive pressure air pumps. As with all treatment options these CPAP pumps cannot be tolerated by everyone and may have a limited success with some individuals. In severe cases where respiratory arrest is possible surgery may be an option. Surgical removal of excessive soft tissues in the throat and nasal sinus surgeries have been performed open up the airways with moderated success. In extreme cases skeletal surgeries are performed to open up airways with great success. It sounds like a lot of treatment, but we are talking about a life-threatening situation if left untreated. Regardless, I hope that you can appreciate that snoring may be a sign of a more serious problem and that it should be discussed with your physician or dentist. Your dentist can do a quick airway analysis, ask a few questions, and refer you to a physician specializing in sleep apnea. Depending upon the results you may just have a snoring problem that can be alleviated with a simple appliance to open the air space for normal sleep or require a more elaborate treatment. Are You One of the 130 Million Americans Suffering From Chronic Pain? By Linda Bock
COMMUNITY NEWS GROUP • MAY 8, 2009 system). For many patients, managing their pain has forced healthcare professionals, such as Dr. Stanley Chou of Pacific Comprehensive Pain Management, to expand beyond traditional Western medicine which relies on drugs and surgery. More and more, acupuncture is becoming center stage in pain management. Dr. Chou, for example, is not only a diplomate on the American Board of Anesthesiology and the Board of Pain Management, he’s a Diplomate on the Board of Acupuncture, NCCAO. Acupuncture can be used alone or in conjunction with drug therapy, physical therapy, and surgery. Acupuncture specialists view pain differently from Western medicine. Acute and chronic pain can be debilitating, interfering with a patient’s daily life and overall health. Fortunately, both types of pain respond to acupuncture—this is because the pain is usually caused by a blockage in the flow of the body’s qi, or energy. The blockage could be due to physical obstruction, too much or too little energy, or an accumulation of cold, heat and/or dampness. Acupuncture is one of the oldest, most commonly used medical procedures in the world. Originating in China more than 2,000 years ago, acupuncture became better known in the United States in 1971, when New York Times reporter James Reston wrote about how doctors in China used needles to ease his pain after surgery. The term acupuncture describes a family of procedures involving stimulation of anatomical points on the body by a variety of techniques. The acupuncture technique that has been most studied scientifically involves penetrating the skin with thin, solid, metallic needles that are manipulated by the hands or by electrical stimulation. Acupuncture is often effective in managing certain types of pain; it stimulates the large and small nerve fibers that inhibit pain signaling; and may produce a placebo effect through the release of endorphins and enkephalins. Acupuncture is often used in the treatment of back pain, minor surgery, and other pain conditions. Research indicates there are areas where acupuncture interventions are very useful. For example, promising results have emerged showing efficacy of acupuncture in adult postoperative and chemotherapy nausea and vomiting and in postoperative dental pain. There are other
situations such as addiction, stroke rehabilitation, headache, menstrual cramps, tennis elbow, fibromyalgia, myofascial pain, osteoarthritis, low-back pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, and asthma in which acupuncture may be useful as an adjunct treatment or as part of a comprehensive management program or even an acceptable treatment alternative. For more information on combining acupuncture with traditional medicine to help your pain, Dr. Chou can be reached at 562-799-3888. His office is located at 10861 Cherry Street, Suite 308, Los Alamito, CA 90720.

Norwalk Softball Continues Unpleasant Pattern With Mayfair, Suburban League Winning Streak Snapped By Loren Kopff LAKEWOOD-For Norwalk softball head coach Paulette Gasporra, it's a case of deja vu when her team goes up against Mayfair. Since the Suburban League switched to a weekly home and home format in 2006 rather than the more popular first round-second round configuration, the Lancers have won the first game against Mayfair three straight seasons. But, for the third straight season, it has been the Monsoons who have spoiled a bid for a sweep as Mayfair blanked the visiting Lancers 2-0 last Friday on Kristen Jaeger's one-hitter. Norwalk had won its first nine league games which is believed to be the longest such streak in school history and with a win last Friday, would have eliminated Mayfair from league title consideration. Now, Gasporra's squad will spend its bye week still in first place but even with La Mirada in the loss column with Mayfair at 6-2 and facing last place Artesia and sixth place John Glenn to end the regular season. "I don't know if it's not being able to; I think we both have very strong programs," Gasporra said of losing the second game to Mayfair. "It's just a point of starting the game and finishing the game. It's not an easy win and it's not going to be an easy loss for either ballclub." In 2007, Norwalk edged Mayfair 10-9 in eight innings before losing two days later. Last season, the Lancers blanked the
Monsoons 3-0 but lost a ninth inning heartbreaker at home to finish the week. Last Wednesday, Norwalk, the 10th ranked team in the California Interscholastic FederationSouthern Section Division II poll, got the seventh one-hitter of the season from senior Stephanie Jimenez and got by Mayfair 3-1. But the Monsoons got to Jimenez in the bottom of the second last Friday when Natalie Garcia cracked a one-out home run over the centerfield fence. Jaeger followed that up with a bloop double behind second base in no man's land between center and right. Garcia had moved up two spots in the lineup from the first meeting. After Jimenez struck out Brittney Boggs, Lindsay Burillo blooped a single into shallow right to bring in Jaeger. Jimenez would retire 12 of the final 13 batters but Jaeger was nearly unstoppable. While the Lancers had runners on base in six of the seven innings, no one reached third base and sophomore catcher Claudia Torres got the team's lone hit, which came in the top of the sixth with two outs. It's the fewest hits in a game for Norwalk since collecting two in the season opener against Carson in the Downey Tournament. Jaeger would walk four and hit another batter to account for the other base runners for the Lancers, who fell to 18-7 overall. "She did a good job on the mound," Gasporra said of Jaeger. "With us, we needed to adjust our bats and we needed to come out a little stronger than we did. Like I said, it's a battle for what is now two games. It's always been a battle for us against anybody, but I do believe our program is strong. I think we should still be able to finish out on top. This [loss] is water under the bridge." Now, for the fourth consecutive season, the Lancers will have a bye before facing La Mirada, the eight-time defending league champions. The Matadores spent this week
Morganalarm@gmail.com
playing Bellflower and could be sporting a 9-1-league mark by the time they host Norwalk on May 12. La Mirada has gone 99-5 in league during the past eight-plus seasons with two of those five losses coming to Norwalk; the first in 2001 (1-0 at La Mirada) and the second in 2006 (2-1 at La Mirada). "Having a bye week can go both ways," Gasporra said. "It gives us more time to relax and work on things we need to work on. We're still in first place. It's not us coming after La Mirada, it's La Mirada coming after us."
Norwalk's Jimenez Eyes a Suburban League Championship in Her Final Attempt By Loren Kopff Stephanie Jimenez, along with the rest of her Norwalk High softball team, couldn't have asked for a better situation to be in heading into the final week of the regular season. On Tuesday, the Lancers will visit eight-time defending Suburban League champion La Mirada with the rematch to be played on Thursday at Norwalk. Every player dreams of winning a league title in any sport but to do it against the most prolific team in the circuit for almost a decade would be a huge exclamation point, especially for Jimenez, who has become one of the top hurlers the past two seasons. When Jimenez faces the Matadores on Tuesday, she will be sporting a 16-7 record with an earned run average of 1.00. She has struck out 228 batters, walked only 23, pitched three no-hitters, seven one-hitters and three two-hitters. Opponents haven't scored on her 12 times and she went through a stretch of 56 straight scoreless innings from Mar. 27-Apr. 13. And if you don't think Jimenez is ready for the final week of the season, then you don't know her. "Everything that I've been working for this past season with this team has come down to La Mirada," Jimenez said. "That's the only team I want to beat. I really want to win league and as a team we've been working really hard to win league. If we win league, I'm going to remember that for the rest of my life." There could be another reason why Jimenez has been working harder than ever. Last season, Jimenez was holding a 4-1 lead at home against La Mirada and had two outs in the top of the fifth when Rebecca Walker laced a double to the right field gap. That would be the beginning of a seven-run outburst that enabled the Matadores to win 10-4. It was almost
a case of deja vu for Jimenez because exactly two weeks earlier, the right-hander was clinging to a 1-0 lead against Mayfair with two outs in the top of the seventh and a 2-2 count to Jessica Dugas. On the next pitch, Dugas singled in the tying run and the Lancers eventually lost 2-1 in nine innings. One out away from a victory in both games was the difference between a 9-3 league season and possibly a co-league championship at 11-1 with La Mirada. "I feel that we basically fell apart," Jimenez said. "It was really heartbreaking but then again if we would have scored more runs, it wouldn't have meant anything at the end. "To me it was just another hit and I honestly believed we were going to come back and score more runs, but it didn't happen." "It's hard because you work so long and it ends like that," said Norwalk head coach Paulette Gasporra. "Sometimes I don't believe in luck; it's just that things happen for whatever reason. To not finish where we want to finish stings a little. But it's not the end of the world." While Jimenez has been a four-year varsity member, she was a backup to Ashley Lininger in 2006 but still got a decision in four games and saved three others. Her lone victory was a one-hit shutout against Costa Mesa. But, she was also showing what she could do with her bat as she led the team with a .387 average and was walked 14 times, also tops on the team. As a sophomore, Jimenez was finding herself splitting time with Andrea Gutierrez and ended up with a 9-5 record and a 1.81 ERA with 126 strikeouts. Jimenez said that after watching the southpaw Lininger the previous season, she wanted to earn a spot on the varsity team instead of it automatically handed to her and that she worked on her confidence to earn that spot. "I just felt that I hit my spots more," Jimenez said of her freshman season. "I think that's more important than speed or anything else." That season, her batting average improved to .453 but she finally held the title of the number one pitcher last season and she didn't disappoint anyone. She went 16-9 overall, tossed four no-hitters, five one-hitters and three two-hitters. Jimenez blanked her opponents nine times, held them scoreless for 38 straight innings during one stretch and was the league's most valuable pitcher. It just went to prove that a member of a non-league champion can still be the best at her position. "I worked on being more consistent," Jimenez said. "That's what my main focus was on last year. My sophomore year was obviously confidence but last year was being more consistent." "You pick up kids as freshmen because they're going to be there and they're going to get that experience on the varsity level," Gasporra said. "So with Steph and [senior

first baseman] Michelle [Contreras], they came in as freshmen very strong players and there was no need to put them on a lower level team." This season, Jimenez is also showing that she can set the tone for not only the team, but how she does in the circle. She has been the leadoff hitter and is second behind Contreras with a .521 average. She has scored 29 times, best for the Lancers, and has drawn 11 walks. "My philosophy is hitting is contagious and if you know your first batter is going to get it done, you want it to follow through the lineup," Gasporra said. "She has a great on-base percentage whether it's getting a hit or a walk. She's not slow by any means either; she's very aggressive on the bases." Jimenez, who signed with Odessa (TX) College three weeks ago, says she is more focused on her team's performance than any of the statistics that opens a lot of eyes. Her road to bigger and better things can be linked to Gahr head coach Mike Rogers, who coached Jimenez with the Artesia Punishers and later the USA Athletics travel ball teams. Currently, Jimenez is with Cal Thunder, coached by Joe Vargas. She credits Rogers for teaching her how to deal with pressure. "It was a really good place to start off and build up your skills," Jimenez said. "But after a while, you have to move on and try new things and that's what I did. I was with him for too long and I wanted more and that's when I made the switch. "When I'm on the mound, I don't feel any pressure," Jimenez added. "I feel more of the pressure when we're on offense. I don't mind if the other team hits off me as long as I have my defense to back me up. If they get a good hit off of me, there's nothing I can do. It's just part of the game and I have to learn from it." "She's got a lot of talent and of course you need a pitcher to compete," Gasporra said. "She's done very well for our program but at the same time it takes nine players on the field, not just her. These last two and a half years, she has matured a lot on the mound to get the big W's that we needed."

Each card includes a note to one of our service personnel expressing gratitude and warm wishes. The students put their name and address on the back of the card in hopes that the soldier might like to start future correspondence. So far the class has donated 50 cards and more are in the making In addition to the above class, JoDee teaches a class in Computerized Machine Embroidery. She and her students had donated blankets to large philanthropic organizations in the past, but recently, they decided that they wanted to help their local community. They created 12 beautiful embroidered blankets and donated them to a Cerritos Law Enforcement Agency. They call this project “Blanket Hug” and were rewarded with the joy of giving when they found out that recently two of their blankets were used to embrace a 5 year old girl and her two year old sibling whom she had been taking care of for days, when they were abandoned. There are other teachers and students at the Adult School that give their time and the fruit of their art and labor to those who are less fortunate or are in need. The school provides a wonderful life-long learning environment, and they have found a way to parlay that learning into giving back to the community. April 20-26, 2009 April 20-26, 2009 Part I felony crime for this reporting period dropped to seventeen incidents from twenty-four the previous week although robberies, commercial and vehicle burglaries were higher. Residential burglaries remained the same and vehicle thefts dropped. Calls for service were also down at 322 compared to 340 the week before. The 2009 weekly average in calls for service is currently 32. One robbery was reported last week. A male suspect robbed a bank in the 11400 block of South Street on Friday April 24 at 3:33 p.m. Although no weapon was seen, the suspect alluded to one. Residential burglaries remained the same at two cases last week. Rear windows were pried open in both. A camera was the only reported loss. The 2009 weekly average in this category is now 2.3. When victims leave doors and windows open or unlocked, no noise is produced by the suspect(s) as entry can be made with ease. Make it as difficult as possible for someone to gain entry into your home. Use locking pins on locked windows and deadbolts on locked doors. Force the would-be burglar to work hard and make noise if he or she intends to victimize you. Two commercial burglaries were recorded. Computers were stolen from a school and auto electronics were taken from a closed business after a rear door was pried open to gain entry. The 2009 weekly average commercial burglaries is 1.1. Vehicle burglaries were up by two cases as six were investigated last week. Only two were from high-volume commercial parking lots. Four involved SUVs, and GPS units were stolen in two. An MP3 player, cash, and a laptop computer were also taken. The 2009 weekly average in vehicle burglaries is at 8.1. Vehicle burglars rarely enter your vehicle to just look around, but are instead attracted to an item that they can see from outside. If your property is valuable and important to you, consider leaving it at home or taking it with you when you exit the vehicle. Remember, law enforcement officers cannot protect you from vehicle burglars. Only you can prevent your own vehicle burglary. Vehicle thefts also dropped from five cases to three last week. High-volume commercial parking lots were the crime scenes in two cases. A Honda, a Buick, and a Dodge were stolen. The 2009 weekly average in vehicle thefts is now 6.4. Protect your vehicle with some form of security. GPS tracking devices are useful after the vehicle is stolen, but a good visual deterrent may help you avoid that situation. Consider a steering wheel locking device.

boat “from” China. It took over a month before he, his mother and brother reached the United States mainland where they were reunited with his father and grandfather. His father had been a merchant marine during World War II. He opened a laundry in Salinas, California. The business was eventually successful enough that they were able to start hiring employees. By this time, Lee had graduated from high school and decided he wanted to go to UCLA and major in engineering. He thought it was a good idea at the time since he was always good with numbers. Soon the family was going to try their hand in the food business and opened a food-to-go restaurant. Sadly, the father died, but it didn’t stop Lee’s mother from making the business a success. He would help out as much as he could. He graduated from UCLA in 1960 and got married the same year. He began his first career at Litton Industries as an engineer, but he soon realized that he didn’t like it. So he attended USC Night School to learn about the restaurant business. It wasn’t long before he opened his first restaurant and then there was no stopping him. During his second career, he owned 15 restaurants, including the world famous, 10,000 square feet Jade West Restaurant in Century City that he built in 1972. “It was the first Chinese Restaurant to have linen tablecloths,” he said proudly. The marble for the restaurant was imported from Taiwan and the wood came from Hong Kong. He owned the restaurant for more than 30 years until 2004. Lee says that Selene, his wife of 48

years, has always been supportive. “I would spend many hours with the business, and she never complained.” He is very proud of the 12 years he spent on the Board of Directors for the California Restaurant Association. Lee has many photos of celebrities who had dropped by his Century City restaurant, but he was never that impressed with any of them. “They’re just ordinary people like me and you,” he says. Nevertheless, he remembers taking photos with Johnny Carson, Gene Kelly, Henry Fonda, Ingrid Bergman, Don Rickles, Rock Hudson and Doris Day. Drew Barrymore didn’t know that he was the owner and tipped him $5 for a take-out order. After he sold his last restaurant, he soon was looking for some activity to keep him busy. And he found it as a SCORE Counselor. Yet he still wanted more to do. You would think two careers would be enough, but he has recently earned his real estate license, so don’t be surprised if he becomes a real estate tycoon. He’s also thinking about writing a book. “Who knows—maybe my fourth career will be as a successful author,” he says. Continued from page 5 it” to end your rant. How very professional! But then again you are a publisher of a throw away, excuse me, I meant, community paper.
Dear Publisher: Once again the Publisher makes an outlandish attack against those who disagree with his liberal philosophy. Get over it. You guys won the election and now have control of the government. You should be happy, not angry. Last November, the Publisher attacked Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity for being liars and hateful. In my response to that rant, I reminded the Publisher that words have meaning and asked the Publisher to provide examples of these “lies” and “hateful words”. He did not respond to my request. (Publisher’s note: Transcript from Rush Limbaugh’s show found at http://www.alternet.org/blogs/ peek/50979/, playing a video titled “Barack, the Magic Negro”). Again, without providing any examples, in this rant he describes Limbaugh, Hannity and Glen Beck as being “bombastic and racist”. As is the case with many liberals, the Publisher can’t argue issues without resorting to personal attacks. I
guess if you disagree with President Obama’s agenda in pursuing a plan to significantly increase the role of the federal government, you must be racist. The unprecedented spending proposed by Obama and his fellow democrats will do untold damage to future generations of Americans. Rahm Emanuel’s comment, “Never let a crisis go to waste”, speaks volumes. The Publisher says that the “right wing” Republican party in a recent Pugh poll was described by respondents as not knowing “where the party is headed and don’t like it”. In some respects I agree. I believe Republicans should loudly and publicly restate the core values which allowed them to regain overwhelming control of Congress in the 1994 mid-term elections. Unfortunately, the Republican Party has deviated in recent years from these ideas. I must remind the Publisher that Barack Obama did not receive all of the votes in the recent election and that the Republican candidate garnered a substantial number of supporters. I voted for the “ultra conservative” John McCain because he said he was a Republican. Romney would have been a better candidate as he had extensive executive experience in the private sector as well as in government service and had a good understanding of economics. Obama, on the other hand, whose background consisted mainly of teaching and community

TO ADVERTISE CALL 800-901-7211 organizing, was lacking in those areas. Regarding the Arlen Specter debacle, the Publisher conveniently fails to mention that in March of this year Specter declared that he would not leave the Republican Party. Specter said the two party system was necessary to ensure a balanced approach to governance. Although his alleged reason for leaving was that his views more closely resembled those of the Democratic Party, could his decision have been based on the fact that he was losing badly in polls leading up to the 2010 midterm elections? I’ll let the readers decide. Gary Lee Cerritos
Passings Roger Berry (1939-2009)long-time president of the Cerritos Rod and Gun Club Roger Berry, emeritus associate professor of marketing and an alumnus of California State University, Dominguez Hills, died suddenly on April 9 at age 70. Roger William Berry was born in Lynwood, Calif. in 1939. He attended Lynwood High School and lived for many years in the Southern California communities of Cerritos and Lake Forest, moving to Prescott Valley, Ariz. in 2008. An avid sportsman, he was a founding member and longtime president of the Cerritos Rod and Gun Club. Among his many outdoor pursuits, he enjoyed deep sea fishing, hunting, photography, riding all-terrain vehicles and hiking with family and friends. Berry is survived by his wife Georgia; children Traci Goodbar, Michael Hart, Michelle Perez; grandchildren John Dominguez, Joshua Dominguez, Brandon Perez, Contessa Perez and Ronald Goodbar. Former Cerritos Resident Craig Kimsey Dies in Bicycle Accident Craig Kimsey, a former Cerritos resident, was killed while riding his bicycle on April 22, 2009. Kimsey was struck by a pick-up truck while riding on Highway 30 in Cheyenne, Wyoming. He was two blocks from home. Craig had only moved to Cheyenne about a month before his untimely and tragic death, and was working as a chef at a local restaurant. He lived with his cousin, Matt Kimsey, and his family. Craig attended Leal Elementary, Tetzlaff Junior High School, and graduated from Cerritos High Craig and his son School. Craig was Nickolas. one of five brothers. The oldest brother, Frank Daniel Kimsey, died less than a year ago. He was buried with military honors in Lake Michigan. Craig is survived by two sons, Patrick and Nickolas, and his brothers, Darrin, Michael, and Robert. He was also survived by his mother, Melinda Kimsey, who is a long-time Cerritos resident. Craig was an organ donor. All of his organs were donated to deserving men, women and children. The family says this was in keeping with Craig’s generosity and kindness. Craig was described as a man with a dear heart, and the family is quite certain that many others would be able to live because of Craig’s untimely death. Craig’s mother shared her final thought, “For it is in giving that we receive; and by dying we receive eternal life.” Craig was born on March 19, 1967 at Downey Community Hospital. A memorial service will be held at Crossroads Multinational Church, 12229 Del Amo Boulevard, Cerritos, and CA. 90703 on Tuesday, May 12th. Should you have any questions or condolences, the family requests you contact them.

Message from the Membership Services Director by Bryana Mason
It’s typical for the vast majority of small businesses to be local not only in location but in marketing focus. The wider your marketing base, the more people you are likely to reach. In hard times, looking beyond the regular geographical boundaries of your business is good business. Do not be afraid to market on a larger scale, but while utilizing cost-efficient marketing. When a recession or other difficult times hit, the marketing function of a business is usually the first to go. Remember with less advertising and marketing, the funnel of incoming prospects is reduced creating even more revenue decreases and setting up a vicious cycle that you do not want to get caught in. One key to salvage any business in hard times isn’t to reduce your marketing activities but to replace them with low-budget marketing. Lowbudget marketing included tactics such as PR, NETWORKING, PUBLIC SPEAKING, AND MORE. Get involved in the community, for example, join your local Chamber of Commerce, these organizations are not in it for themselves, but for you and the future of your business. They want to help you create contacts and business relationships with other business owners in your area. These meetings can create strategic partnerships that can help further your business and clientele base. This goes back to the LOWBUDGET marketing I mentioned earlier. Surviving hard times requires going BACK TO THE BASICS, back to the AND THE NORWALK fundamental principles of business. Some CHAMBER BUSINESS EXPO things to remember: make sure you are January 29th, 2009!!!! YOU WON’T doing regular financial checks, providing WANT TO MISS THESE BIG sales training, and managing your customer EVENTS Peace and ease for the holi- relationships; these basic steps can help day season! retain customers and create a rapport with Susan Arthur new clientele. Have a Happy Holiday Season!!!

Labor Law Corner Employee who quits job may be eligible for unemployment insurance. One of my employees quit to go to work for one of my competitors. After a few months she got laid off from her new job and now she’s collecting unemployment insurance from my reserve account. How can she do that when she’s the one who decided to quit my firm? Many employers believe they will have to pay unemployment insurance (UI) only when an employee is fired or laid off. Surprisingly, there are many circumstances where an employee who quits a job can collect UI.Any employer the employee works for in the “base period” of the claim may be liable to pay benefits, even if they were not the last employer. Under California law, an employee who quits with “good cause” may be eligible for UI benefits. “Good cause” means the employee’s reason for leaving must be something substantial and compelling that would cause a reasonable person who genuinely wanted to remain employed to quit anyway. Some examples include quitting to take a better job, to more a substantial distance when a spouse’s job is transferred, or when the employer relocates and the new commute distance is unreasonable. According to the California Employment Development Department (EDD), when an employee quits in order to accept a new job there is good
cause for leaving if: •There was a definite assurance of employment in another substantially better job that is at least as permanent as the job the individual leaves; or •A reasonable person who genuinely wanted to remain employed would have left to accept other work. An employee who quits her job for a substantially better job and then is laid off from the new job due to lack of work may be eligible to collect UI from the first employer’s reserve account. An employee also would be eligible for UI benefits if she quit her job for a substantially better job and then, for reasons beyond her control, the new job did not materialize. This might occur when an employee quits her job based on being given a definite start date by the new employer, who then rescinds the job offer or delays the start date. For more information about what factors are used to determine UI eligibility, go to EDD’s “Benefit Determination Guide” online at www.edd. ca.gov/UIBDG/ This is an excellent resource when responding to a former employee’s UI claim.
