Seawatch residents urged to ‘lawyer up’ Sechelt Mayor Bruce Milne is urging residents of the sinkhole-prone Seawatch neighbourhood, “to seek independent legal advice” and consider joining a class-action suit, as District Council prepares to decide whether to try to fix the problem or condemn the subdivision altogether. But not all residents feel that resorting to litigation is the right move, with one homeowner suggesting that the Council is being “manipulated” by its lawyers. Milne read a carefully worded statement at the Dec. 2 Council meeting, saying that years of studies and reports provide no “certainty in the way of a permanent solution for the [sinkhole] problem.” At least three large sinkholes have developed in the past few years in the subdivision on Sechelt Inlet in the northwest part of the District—two of them last February, forcing Erin and Ross Storey and their three children to flee their damaged home. The Storeys do not expect ever to be able to move back into the abandoned Gale Ave. North property and

have named 32 defendants in a lawsuit, including the District and the developer. Milne said the Storeys’ lawyer was considering inviting the owners of the 14 homes affected to join a class action, which he said would enhance the prospect of “reaching a mutually satisfactory omnibus solution.” However, in an interview with The Local, Seawatch homeowner Mike Paddison said that assertion was incorrect. Paddison said he was contacted Dec. 3 by the Storey’s lawyer, who said, “'We don’t know why the District said we’re [organizing a class action] because it isn’t true.'” Paddison also criticized this Council and previous District Councils over the past several years for “doing nothing” to seriously assess and fix the subdivision’s underground problems. “Every time they get advice from their consultants they dig in their heels and say, ‘Oh my God, we can’t afford this,’” Paddison said. “They haven’t taken even one of their consultants’ recommendations and run with it.” Paddison said that rather than spend a few hundred

3

thousand dollars on learning more about the problem, the District is ready to go to its insurers, “and have them spend $10 million or $20 million buying everybody out. That’s not sound economics.” Milne said he still wants to have a promised, but now delayed meeting with the homeowners. “I think Council—before it makes its final decision— should hear from those residents in terms of what they think options are,” the mayor said. Paddison said he looked forward to the meeting and that he bears no grudge against the current council, adding that he thinks “they’ve been manipulated into this position.” He acknowledged that the Storeys’ home and perhaps some others are under threat of more sinkholes, but said that bore-hole tests on his property have determined his house sits on “extremely hard soil.” “We spent eight years finding this house. We live in the most beautiful place on Earth,” said Paddison. “I’m not going to move away without a battle.” Rik Jespersen

The Town of Gibsons, at the suggestion of Councillor Stafford Lumley, plans to ask the federal government to transfer to the Town the property at O'Shea and School roads, formerly used as the local RCMP detachment. It would be used for "the purposes of low-rent, affordable housing, or converting the existing building for use as transition housing."

Editorial Opinion Santa’s driving checklist With the arrival of winter weather, the Canada Safety Council is reminding Canadians to winter-proof their vehicles to make any driving they may do become easier, safer and more reliable. One of the most beneficial preventative measures you can take is to install winter tires on your car. Get four tires that are suitable for your vehicle, paying special attention to the mountain/snowflake symbol on the side to indicate that they conform to winter tire standards. Don’t wait for the first snowfall to make the change, either — winter tires should be installed when the ambient temperature drops below 7C. This is when the rubber in all-season tires hardens and starts losing the grip it offers. According to the Tire and Rubber Association of Canada’s Winter Tire Report, only half of Canadian motorists outside Quebec — where winter tire use is mandatory according to provincial law — use winter tires, with 63 per cent of people surveyed incorrectly believing that all-season tires offer adequate braking power and traction for Canadian winters. The survey showed the biggest obstacle to switching to winter tires was the cost. In Quebec, where the tires have been mandatory since 2008, crashes have decreased significantly; a study done for the province’s transportation ministers showed an 18 per cent drop. Don’t put a price on peace of mind — winter tires can save lives. In addition to the installation of winter tires, basic maintenance of your vehicle is also of critical importance: • Make sure lights are all working properly. Replace any head lights, brake lights or other lights on your vehicle if they’re not in working condition. Especially in the winter, it’s important to see and be seen. • Ensure you have a fully-charged battery. In cold weather, a depleted battery might not be enough to start your vehicle. Have your battery tested before cold weather hits, and be proactive in changing it for a new one before the old battery fails. • Know you’ll be able to stop safely. Winter tires are an important part of gaining traction when stopping, but you should also check that your brakes are working well. • Windshield wipers and washer fluid should be working right. Replace any windshield wipers that are streaky, as any accumulation of snow or ice could make visibility much poorer. Also, fill up on winter windshield washer fluid (-35C or -40C) and keep a second jug in your vehicle at all times in case of emergency. • Keep a brush and scraper in your vehicle. You never know when you might need to brush snow or scrape ice off your car. Be prepared for these eventualities and they won’t catch you by surprise. Consider keeping a flashlight, too, as the extra light may prove useful on dark winter nights. Driving in the winter always poses a new set of challenges to even the most experienced of drivers. Ensure that you’re well prepared to face the elements, leave yourself plenty of time and space to get stopped if necessary and, if possible, avoid driving in poor visibility bad weather conditions entirely. The Canada Safety Council wishes you a happy and safe winter. Submitted

Letters to the Editor – Opinions Oh, the irony

(There is) double-irony, considering Gibsons Council’s misappropriation of park designated funds to their Fridaymarket venture, and considering your David Suzuki editorial (Dec. 3) regarding the value of trees, in particular, and green infrastructure in general. The losing of park funding is combined with a hotel construction which will cut down all the trees surrounding the band stand shelter. Yet Gibsons council is, as Dr. Suzuki says in your editorial, “working towards putting a dollar value on its natural assets or green infrastructure”. How ironical is this situation? The Suzuki Foundation places a value of $10,000 on 10 trees in green infrastructure, and yet Gibsons council has virtually eliminated park funding, as well as giving over part of Winegarden Park to hotel developers. It is totally inappropriate, ill-conceived, illogical and a foolishly arrogant set of manoeuvres. Keith Receveur, Gibsons

Seniors’ isolation

Approaching the holidays, I'm reminded of the National Seniors Council Report on social isolation. It talks about how ageism, poverty, illness, loss of spouse, friends or a driver’s licence, lack of access to community supports, transportation and housing can lead to social isolation. Let's ensure everyone of all ages is included this season and work toward this year 'round. The Sunshine Coast Seniors Planning Table is more than half way through a first year of funding. Here’s where we've been and where we're going. In 2015, the Sunshine Coast Community Foundation awarded $143,000 to local programs. As foundation Chair Cam Reid said: "Seniors’ issues are a key feature of the Foundation’s 2014 Vital Signs Report which drove the decision to select the Seniors Planning

Table as one of the initiatives to fund, thanks to a very generous anonymous donor.” Systems are being put in place to support the Seniors Planning Table over the long term. This includes the involvement of more than 50 individuals and 20 organizations on the Planning Table, Steering Committee and seven Action Groups and an annual cycle of gathering information about community needs and assets, taking action, and assessing results.
The Planning Table hosted BC's Seniors Advocate and contributed questions on seniors’ issues to a recent federal All Candidates meeting. A “mapping of seniors services” event was held to support service delivery, and a list of community-based education/ information events related to the priorities of the Planning Table was compiled and publicized. Upcoming Action Group activities include implementing a Dementia Friendly Communities Action Plan, educating about substandard housing based on a new locally adapted seniors-specific definition, and presenting a public education campaign called, “it’s Not Right” to help neighbours, friends and families know how to be supportive if an older adult is experiencing abuse.
Thanks to everyone for giving so generously of their time and expertise. Thanks to the Community Foundation for the opportunity to do this work. Alison Leaney, Seniors Planning Table

at 7pm, once again the doors of the coffee shop in Wilson Creek will be thrown open for those who would like to witness the event and offer their financial and moral support. I’m much older and my hair is much greyer than Kate, but stylist, Nikki Lloyd, of Electric Chair, in Gibson’s says she will have no problems taking it off. And Nikki has once again offered her services free of charge. I’m looking to raise $2,000 and a donation jar has been set up at the coffee shop for any and all who wish to contribute. In addition, I have a special page on the Cancer Foundation website and it can be accessed at http://donate. bccancerfoundation.com/ site/TR/Events/ResponsiveT R?px=1917960&pg=personal &fr_id=2800. Hair today…

As a Catholic Women’s League member, when I decided I was going to shave my head as a breast cancer fundraiser I did not have to look very far for a place to host the event. Fellow league member, Anne Stuart, remembered that her daughter, Grace Bland, and Lyle Mumford, co-owners of Strait Coffee in Wilson Creek had hosted a similar event a couple of years ago. At that time Strait employee, Kate Hergott’s “Shave for the Brave”, raised over $5,000 for Young Adult Cancer Canada. And as it also happens, I am a retired employee of Strait Coffee. It was a no brainer: I had a chat with Grace and Lyle and they were 100 per cent on board. It is really great to have such wonderful support like this from our local merchants. So it is that on Jan. 2, 2016,

Gibsons trail expanding In this waterfront town of 4,500 people, municipal leaders have prioritized the development of a continuous, integrated bicycle network to promote both recreation and transportation cycling, and the trail now welcomes casual hikers and mountain bikers who relish the opportunity to enter deep into nature, at the heart of their town. The Town has received a $75,000 BikeBC grant for a Cycling Connector, a 1.8km shared roadway and trail cycling route that connects upper and lower Gibsons, linking the shops, schools and seniors facilities in upper Gibsons with the residential and tourist-oriented

waterfront of lower Gibsons. The grant amount represents 50 per cent of the estimated $150,000 project cost; the balance of funding will be provided by the Town. The project has three distinct segments: Stewart Road, which will be widened to accommodate a bike lane uphill and shared lane downhill; the Shaw/Stewart trail link, a minimal grade trail to be surfaced with fine crushed gravel; and Shaw Rd, a traffic calmed shared roadway which will be suitable for cyclists of all ages and abilities, and in fact, through slower vehicle speeds will enhance safety for all road users. Thanks to the efforts of community volunteers and a BikeBC grant, there will be improved access to a scenic trail that connects upper and lower Gibsons. “We truly appreciate the work volunteers devoted this year to roughing in the trail,” said Gibsons Mayor Wayne Rowe. “Their work has made the trail suitable for casual hiking and mountain bikes; we look forward to supplementing this work in 2016 by widening the trail, and adding a gravel surface to increase accessibility for a broader range of users, from road bikers to those who rely on scooters for the mobility challenged.”

Pam GoldsmithJones MP, West Vancouver Sunshine Coast, Sea to Sky Country

It is a privilege to serve as your Member of Parliament. Thank you for electing me and thank you to The Local for the opportunity to write a monthly column. I thought I would call the column Pull of the Tide to quote Elaine Park (Pender Harbour Living Heritage Society) in a recent presentation, where she concluded by saying "we live by the pull of the tide". My goal for our riding is to harness the significant contribution we can make, as Canadians living on the west coast of our great country. Also, I wish to ensure that I stay well connected to you, particularly since I now have additional responsibilities as Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, The Honourable Stephane Dion. You can expect open government and an open door

from me and from the staff and volunteers who will be supporting our constituency. After consulting with people throughout the riding about how best to serve you, I have signed a lease for an office in Horseshoe Bay. It is situated as centrally as possible within the riding and easily accessible by bus and ferry with plenty of free parking. Right now the landlord is putting in new floors and fresh paint on the walls. We will celebrate our opening in January. Part of my decision to have one office – at least for now - is so that our precious resources may be invested in providing staff in the field, to help you. Local resident Lucie McKiernan will be working part-time on the coast. Whether in private meetings at venues like Rockwood Lodge, other community venues, or at local public meetings, Lucie and I will be here to listen and contribute. When I am in Ottawa or elsewhere in our riding Lucie is available to support you. Our coast email and phone numbers will be available

Christmas in the Landing The fourth annual “Lights in the Landing” December celebration has begun in Gibsons Landing with more than 25,000 lights now visible at dusk from Gibsons Marina to Molly’s Reach and beyond. The lighting of the trees and storefronts in the Landing is just one of the events planned to create a vibrant seasonal atmosphere in the Landing and encourage people to shop local, eat, sip and be merry. The highlight event of the season occurs on Saturday Dec. 12 when Santa will sail into the Gibsons Harbour public dock at 11am accompanied by carolers.

“Nightlight” on Dec. 20 will feature flaming instruments. PHOTO SUBMITTED

Follow The Only Animal deep into the forest Sunday, Dec. 20, the darkest night of the year, on a quest to bring back the light. The sun disappeared into the trees and has not been seen since. The hike begins at 4:30pm, and is suitable for enthusiastic hikers of all ages. Bring a flashlight. in January. I am very keen to spend time in our communities as much as I can. At the end of November I met with the Pender Harbour Advisory Council, the Sunshine Coast Conservation Association, the Seniors Planning Table in Sechelt, and the Gibsons Public Market. I will pursue funding requests that are already in the works, as well as arrange for meetings with relevant ministries on behalf of these organizations. Please feel welcome to contact us so that when we are on the coast we know that you would like to meet. By the next edition of this column our Horseshoe Bay office will be open at 6367 Bruce Street in West Vancouver. You can reach me anytime by email at pam. goldsmithjones@parl.gc.ca. Until our constituency office is open, please call the Ottawa office at 613-947-4617. Sara MacDonald will be on the other end of the line, ready to take your calls. Best wishes for happy winter holidays. I will see you in January 2016.

During the holidays music fills the air as local choirs busily rehearse for the Christmas concert season. The Pender Harbour Choir is preparing for a Merry Little Christmas on Dec. 12 at the Sunshine Coast Botanical Garden. Joy McLeod, a professional choir director for almost 40 years, has been leading the Pender Harbour Choir for eight. “It’s

such a rewarding thing to do,” say McLeod. “I can’t for the life of me think what I would do if I didn’t do music.” As a

community choir, there are no auditions. “We take all comers and help them learn,” says McLeod. “A lot of people have had experience in school or church choirs, but some haven’t. It’s a brand new experience and they want to give it a try.” Beyond being an opportunity to sing, learn music and meet new people, the choir also gives back to the community. The Pender Harbour Choir recently sang for the residents of Shorncliffe and Totem Lodge care facilities, as well as at Pender Harbour’s Remembrance Day ceremony. For their Christmas concert, the program will include works by local composers Kenneth Johnson, Miles Ramsay and Corylynn Haney, along with traditional seasonal favourites. McLeod is also working with the Coast Messiah Choir to prepare for two concerts Dec. 13 and 16 at St. John’s United Church. They will be singing the Christmas section of Handel’s Messiah which will include a string quartet, trumpets and harpsicord. Pamela Wood and Ian Poole

have been with the choir for three years. “I’ve sung all my life and any chance I get to sing Messiah I take it,” says Wood. “It’s such a beautiful piece, who could resist singing it?” Poole agrees, adding, “She’s very encouraging and lets you know you’re doing a good job,” referring to McLeod. “I love coming,” says first year singer Geniene Elliot. “It’s fabulous singing with this choir because of people like these who really know the music and I can just sing along. I get to have a fun.” The Pender Harbour Choir performs Merry Little Christmas, Saturday, Dec. 12, 2pm at the Sunshine Coast Botanical Garden. Tickets are $20, available at EarthFair, Sechelt Visitor Centre or at the door. For more information visit: penderharbourmusic.ca/choir. The Coast Messiah Choir performs Messiah Dec. 13 and 16 at 7pm at St. John’s United Church in Davis Bay. Tickets are $20 available at Sechelt Visitor Centre, Laedeli Gifts or by calling 604-885-9015. Investors Corner Dave Jephcott Community Futures Sunshine Coast

What does investing locally look like? It could

mean leveraging the largest personal investment in our lifetime – our mortgages – and influencing where our financial institutions are investing them. We’re often told to affect change, or “vote” with our wallets, so

the typical startup or entrepreneur will secure is capital raised from an “angel investor.” Usually friends or family of the entrepreneur, they will typically give more favourable terms than other lenders, and are often investing in the person rather than the viability of the business. They are focused on seeing the entrepreneur succeed rather than reap a huge profit on their investment. They are typically seen as the opposite of a venture capitalist. A venture capitalist is an investor that is willing to provide capital to startups or companies that need expansion funding because they can earn huge returns on their investments if these companies are successful. Naturally, venture capitalists also experience major losses when the companies they back aren’t successful. Many investors will have a particu-

why not vote with our investments? Credit unions are an excellent example of how we can all directly influence investments that flow to the local business community. The more capital that a local credit union has access to, the more money it has to lend to local businesses. The old conversation about shopping local and local investment was that the people who will do it are prepared to accept a lower return just because it’s local. This is a conversation that we are actively trying to turn upside-down. Investing locally need not be any less valuable than an international portfolio of investments into large corporations. But just as shopping locally is not charity, investing locally does not mean sacrificing a good return on your hard-won capital. The first investment that

lar scope or appetite for riskand-reward scenarios. Modern community economic development practitioners now see traditional capital gains and social return on investment as tools that can co-exist and work symbiotically in a vibrant, diverse, growing community. Next time, we will look at how the new economy is trending towards investments that are aligned to the values and vision of the investor, of the community. We will explore some exciting local businesses that have innovative business models and opportunities for growth, and how debt financing and equity play a role in their future. Search & Rescue Dispatches Alan Skelley Coxswain RCMSAR Station 12

As the holiday season approaches, it brings with it busy times and crowded schedules for everyone. Although a less active time for recreational use in the back country or on the water, the winter months on the Sunshine Coast usher in

more changeable, rigorous weather: incidents may be fewer but may well be more urgent and serious for those involved. Search and Rescue crews are busy with training schedules these days, aiming always, with an eye on inclement weather conditions, to maintain a state of readiness. SAR teams, be they Ground or Marine will be standing by ready to respond 24/7 over the forthcoming holidays.

The Marine SAR Units, Stn 14 - Gibsons and Stn 12 Halfmoon Bay/Porpoise Bay continue with on-the-water training and will be accompanying the various Christmas Carol Cruise events as scheduled. RCMSAR Gibsons is anxiously awaiting delivery of their new fast response vessel scheduled for 2016, and take pleasure in welcoming Mark Coombs, a popular coxswain with Stn 12 who has relocated further south. Recent fund-

raising events for both RCMSAR units have been great successes, and thanks go out to the community who supported them and gave so generously. Sunshine Coast Ground SAR approaches the winter season with confidence and satisfaction that comes from intensive training and heightened professionalism. This was recognized recently at the annual SC SAR appreciation dinner at which Harry Almond was honoured upon his retirement after an unprecedented 17 years as chairman of Sunshine Coast SAR. Harry was one of the Coasts' early search managers, and although less active now, still has his shingle out for advice and help in emergencies. SC SAR focuses on the right people with the right training at the right time, and this was recognized at the dinner with the Top Pick award going to Jason Haines, who has been instrumental in regular training and has

Police Report Royal Canadian Mounted Police On December 3, police attended to an injured owl found by a motorist on the side of Highway 101 near Havies Road, Sechelt. The motorist also contacted the BC Conservation Officer Service who in turn contacted the Gibsons Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre. Police located the owl, which was still alive but incapable of moving very far, and kept an eye on it until Gibsons Wildlife Rehab volunteers arrived. The owl, which did not appear to have any broken wings, was taken by the volunteers to be nursed back to health from a possible concussion. On December 5 at around 6:30 pm, a hit and run was reported on Highway 101 after a pedestrian and her dog were in the crosswalk near Westly Road, Davis Bay.

An eastbound pick-up truck struck the dog, before the dog was hit by a second vehicle. Neither driver stopped to assist the pedestrian or her deceased dog. Police remind drivers to watch for pedestrians and for pedestrians to make sure they are visible to drivers, especially at night and in inclement weather. Sometime between December 1st and 4th, a considerable amount of gas was siphoned from a car’s gas tank on Crucil Lane in Gibsons. Information suggests that there may have been additional gas thefts in the area. Police ask vehicle owners to monitor their fuel levels, and report any suspect thefts or suspicious persons in the area. Police were called by two drivers after an apparent road rage incident in Gibsons. The incident started after one driver was alleged to have been driving slowly, while the other driver was alleged to have been tailgating.

Fortunately in this case both parties called police, who intervened before any violence occurred. Drivers are reminded to exercise extra patience at this time of year, when people tend to drive at more varied speeds due to weather and road conditions. Driving complaints should be reported to Sunshine Coast RCMP, and motorists should never leave their vehicles to confront another driver. Late on November 30, staff attended to an alarm at a business in the 4300 block of Highway 101 but found no signs of entry. The following morning, staff found that a large inflatable snowman had been moved outside a gated compound and another inflatable creature was halfway under a gate. Other items in the compound were knocked over and moved around. Due to the fact that nothing was actually stolen, it was determined that the strong winds were likely the cause of the mischief.

brought the rope team to top class status. Proper equipment is a vital part of Search and Rescue; Santa's sleigh famously is well-equipped in this regard, and for any SAR volunteers on your Christmas list, personal safety and communications gear will always be welcome.

Sunshine Coast Ground SAR and Royal Canadian Marine SAR Stns 12 & 14 wish everyone happy holidays and remind all to stay safe by being prepared and properly equipped for the season. For more information about Search and Rescue on the Coast, please visit sunshinecoastsar.ca.

Horoscope

Tip of the Week: The New Moon in Sagittarius is the last one of 2015. Among the more positive character traits for Sagittarius is the capacity to be visionary, to see a deeper, wider and longer-term vision than average. In the widest sense this includes achieving success that benefits others, our family, our community and/or humanity in general. This is where Astrology can help a lot by helping us to understand who we are as individuals and the deeper motivations of why we are here, what constitutes our life purpose and how we can be successful both materially and spiritually too. Beyond mere prediction, good Astrology serves to see who you are in a deep and precise manner thus supporting choices that contain a deeper meaning a purpose for both the short and long term. The point of power is ever in the moment and now is the time to make meaningful investments into living your fullest life by shining your true light. Aries (Mar 21–Apr 20) You are in a sober and determined mood, eager to get down to business. Attending to practical affairs of all kinds is on your mind. This current momentum will continue through and beyond the turn of the New Year. Fortunately, the child within awakens for you at this time of the year. If you make the festive season your business, you can help make your holiday wishes comes true.

stage for you now. You feel inspired to take some key risks, even leaps of faith, yet you must also contend with various delays and restrictions. Some of these may be linked to your confidence levels. Yet curiosity is getting the better of you. You are eager to have new experiences, to invite experimentation into the mix. Libra (Sep 22–Oct 22) You are in an assertive mood and your energy levels are running high to support your cause. With so many fronts to attend to combined with a growing ambition for prosperous returns, this is good news indeed. Your confidence levels may still be a little below your ideal so it may be necessary to work a little harder to compensate. Scorpio (Oct 22–Nov 21) Where and how to invest continues to occupy your focus. Sometimes it is money, at other turns it is extra time that is required and sometimes it is simply extra effort that must be applied. This is also a time when who you know will balance with what you know and could even take the 51%. In any case, circumstances are leading you to keep an open mind yet to also take a sharp focus regarding business. Sagittarius (Nov 21–Dec 21) This New Moon will serve to activate the next wave of your creative initiative. It comes at a good time too as a new cycle rapidly approaches. Your basic task now is to know which direction to take. If ever there was a need for a solid plan this is it. Expansion in your public and/or professional life is highlighted and requires practical thinking and realistic action. Capricorn (Dec 21–Jan 19) A steady process of releasing old relationship commitments and/or relationship patterns continues.

Looking back, you and your life circumstances have likely changed considerably over the past few years. Now it is time for the next series of shifts. As ever, you get to choose and decide to contribute to the outcome. Take note: it is the small things you do every day that make the biggest difference. Aquarius (Jan 19–Feb 19) You are learning to see things more clearly, as they are. You are increasingly aware of the relativity of perceptions. What not so long ago was ‘the’ news is now just other news. At worst you do not know what to believe anymore. At best you feel liberated from sources you once accepted more literally. Yet you remain aware that the world needs wisdom and healing. Pisces (Feb 19–Mar 20) A new dynamic is emerging in your life. It includes expansion and increase but you have to play your part by having a plan. It will also require additional effort and discipline. This will be-

Taurus (Apr 20–May 21) Digging deep to access hidden treasures is keeping you busy now. While this focus includes your own talents and resources, you may also be scoping out those of others. Having your relationship desires fulfilled is woven into the plot. You may have to make extra efforts however. Some soul searching about what is meaningful to you is featured Gemini (May 21–Jun 21) Your adventure is guiding you to new relationship experiences. These may require more patience and effort than you initially anticipated. Extra diplomacy is implied. This includes making efforts to open your mind wider than you perhaps have for a while. This comes at a busy time requiring your attention on a variety of fronts. With your powers of analysis running so high, you also probably have a lot on your mind. In certain respects you feel determined to get to the bottom of things. All the while you feel passionately about the people you love.
