Hundreds of people lined the streets of Sechelt's downtown on Saturday, Nov. 28 for the annual Parade of Lights, featuring about a dozen commercial and private vehicles dressed up in dazzling electrical displays. The judges' first prize and the People's Choice went to Gibsons Building Supplies "Christmas Train" (above), made up of a chain of hidden forklifts. Second prize went to Sechelt Tree Service. Another crowd favourite was the Swanson's Ready-Mix cement truck, which has taken top prize twice previously. RIK JESPERSEN PHOTO

‘World Party’ comes to the Sunshine Coast

If hearing loss affects your interactions with family and friends, then it’s time you did something about it! “The world is full of magic things, patiently waiting for our senses to grow sharper” - Yeats

Feel at home

The four comical and charming guys who are the stars of one of the top TV shows in Greece know something about the Sunshine Coast that most residents probably don’t: Coast Gravity Park, just a 10-minute drive on a dirt road past the Sechelt Landfill Site in East Porpoise Bay, is an international mountainbiking Mecca. “On the other side of the Atlantic, there are heaps of people that are so aware of this place,” said on-air personality George Kouros. “Everybody from the mountainbike scene in Greece, they follow what’s going on. They know this is the only place you can ride all year round

on such good trails that are so well-maintained.” That reputation prompted the Greek crew—Kouros, host-producer Sakis Tanimanidis, co-host George Mavridis and videographer Theo Plakidis—to trek the 10,000 kilometres to Sechelt for a few rides down the mountain. Their highly popular TV show is named “World Party,” and these young men live up fully to that theme. They’re on the road several months a year, living the dream of 20-to40-somethings everywhere. “We see everything as an experience, not ‘a trip,’” said Tanimanidis. “In each country, we try to get the experience of the local culture, and

ANY WINE ORDER! Meet Kevin, our hardwood refinishing specialist! Kevin has been installing and refinishing hardwood for over 20 years and joined Custom Carpet’s team in 2008.

Why refinish? Whether you’ve had hardwood floors for a long rime or just discovered them under old carpeting, you’ve probably considered refinishing them. Waxing and/or buffing often provides a good shine but refinishing the floor is usually the only way to regain the original richness and beauty of the wood.

reflect a positive attitude on life everywhere.” Before the Sunshine Coast, the foursome stopped in Toronto to try their hand at hockey—with a bunch of nine-year-old players skating rings around them—followed by a round of beerdrinking and axe-throwing, at the same time. Next stops on the “World Party” tour include Whistler, Alaska and then two weeks in Hawaii. The one real downhiller in the troupe is its youngest member, Kouros. “George`s dream as a mountain biker was to come to the number-one spot on the planet to mountain bike,” said Tanimanidis. The only other mountainbiking adventure that the “World Party” crew tried was down the volcano called Mount Batur in Bali. The verdict from Kouros on Coast Gravity Park: “It’s the best place I’ve ridden in the whole world,” he said. The segment with the mountain bike adventure will air in Greece next spring and be on YouTube shortly after. Rik Jespersen

Green screen art Star Wars, Star Wars, nothing but Star Wars. The Force will not only awaken, it will full-on invade the Gibsons Public Art Gallery on Dec. 10. Toys, collectibles, fan art, and other...crap (let’s be blunt and honest here), as well as a special effects green screen. Visitors are invited to use this screen with their own personal cameras and computers. With basic video editing software, visitors can film themselves and then later add a digital background of their choice, whatever that may be. An empty green screen is a blank canvas for a film maker's imagination. And what can be imagined in place of the screen is by no means limited to Star Wars. It can be anything, the possibilities of an imagination here are limitless. 'Star Wars: The Gibsons Public Art Gallery Holiday Special' will feature a show and shine of action figures and several noted talks and workshops. Workshops are $10, or $8 for GPAG members. On Dec. 11 from 3:304:30pm, Will Maher, the Lead VFX Instructor at the Art Institute of Vancouver, will present a talk on the visual effects of the Star Wars films. Admission for the talk is a suggested $2 donation (general admission for a visit to the gallery remains free, by donation). On Dec. 13 Miyuki Shinkai will lead a Star Wars origami class, instructing participants in the ancient art of folding paper into ornaments in the likeness of popular Star Wars characters. Second, it was alleged the dispensary did not require buyers to have a medicinal marihuana licence or any medical documentation showing that they required cannabis for a medical purpose. Moreover they also offered internet ordering and delivery options, meaning anyone could go online and order marihuana-infused products to be delivered to their door. “The business owners were not abiding by the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act, nor were they in line with the recent court 14A 107min

decisions relating to cannabis derivatives or edible marihuana products,” said Cst. Harrison Mohr with Sunshine Coast RCMP. “But most concerning to us was that the business did not have any restrictions in place on whom they would sell their products to.” He also points out that police must work under and enforce current legislation. No arrests have been made at this time, however the investigation is ongoing and charges against the owners may be recommended at a later date. Submitted by RCMP

On Saturday Nov. 28, Sunshine Coast RCMP executed a search warrant on a business operating from a residence in the Selma Park area of Sechelt. The warrant follows a lengthy investigation by police, after being made aware that marihuana-infused candies and baked goods were being sold from the home. The RCMP targeted this operation for two reasons. First, the business was operating out of a house in a quiet residential neighbourhood. Police received complaints from numerous neighbours relating to the increased traffic to and from the residence,

Editorial Opinion The value of trees Across Canada, towns and cities face a one-two punch: aging infrastructure and the extreme weather climate change brings. Unless we do something, many of our roads, railways, transit lines, bridges, stormwater pipes and other built structures could become obsolete. Our newly elected federal government took up the challenge with a campaign pledge to double infrastructure investments from $65 billion to nearly $125 billion over the next 10 years. While the political commitments are long overdue, we shouldn’t lose sight of less-expensive and longer-lasting solutions to many of our infrastructure needs, like planting trees in urban areas for stormwater management and other services. We often take trees and green spaces for granted, but we shouldn’t. They clean and cool air, filter and regulate water, reduce energy use and protect homes and businesses during storms. Recognizing urban trees as infrastructure assets opens up new ways to assess their value and justify investment in their maintenance. Living, green infrastructure increases in value over time, unlike grey infrastructure, such as stormwater pipes, which depreciate. As trees mature they provide exponentially more benefits to residents. Healthy street trees can lengthen the lifespan of built infrastructure like roads and sidewalks by shading them and reducing effects of weathering, and they provide significant human health benefits. This summer, using data from Toronto, David Suzuki Foundation Ontario director Faisal Moola and his academic colleagues found that adding 10 trees to a block can produce health benefits equivalent to a $10,000 salary raise or being seven years younger. Unfortunately, urban forest stewardship varies widely across the country. Few municipalities have the necessary financial resources to manage and protect their urban forests in the face of growing and diverse threats. To help resolve this, provincial and federal governments need to update the definition of infrastructure to include green infrastructure such as trees, rain gardens and permeable surfaces, and allow municipalities to spend money to develop and maintain these assets. Higher levels of government must also update the standards by which municipalities report and manage their government assets to include trees, parks, wetlands, woodlots and public aquifers. That would facilitate setting minimum provincial standards for maintenance of critical green infrastructure and would improve management practices. We have provincial standards for grey infrastructure such as roads, so why not for green infrastructure? With the help of the David Suzuki Foundation, the tiny town of Gibsons has already started on this path. (With research help from the foundation, Gibsons is working towards putting a dollar value on its natural assets or green infrastructure.) It’s also important to make living, green infrastructure a crucial component of provincial and federal climate change strategies. The unique, multi-purpose benefits of living, green infrastructure make it an incredibly valuable tool for cities and towns to improve resiliency in the face of climate change. If we're going to build, let's build green. Green infrastructure complements and reduces costs associated with traditional grey concrete, steel and asphalt infrastructure. It also provides a multitude of co-benefits that improve the health and well-being of residents and makes our communities more beautiful and pleasant. David Suzuki

Letters to the Editor – Opinions Colours of democracy

(Re:“Unique Gibsons street signs to stay”, the Local, Nov. 26) Your article concerning the final council vote on the hotly debated issue of Gibsons' street sign colours was quite informative, but unfortunately it did not pay fair due to the most important aspect of the entire affair. In particular, the mayor, and all four councillors, were able to participate and debate the matter, free from allegations of conflict of interest, and free of pressure from the paint and sign lobby. Most importantly, there was no voting along predetermined lines. Council members clearly felt comfortable taking opposing positions and voting their conscience. No boos were heard from the audience. No one stormed out in anger when one councillor referred to the current signs as 'ugly'. No one called for independent engineering surveys to confirm the risk of these signs to the 1.3 per cent of the population that suffers from colour blindness. No allegations of impropriety were raised. Given the divisiveness of other matters recently before council, it is comforting to know that, when it counts, both democracy and levelheadedness do still exist in Gibsons. Seeking sponsors

For many of us, the Christmas Season is full of magic, miracles, music, love and family. We would like to acknowledge those members of our community who may experience the season in a much different way, due to financial circumstances. Here is an opportunity for you to brighten someone's holiday by giving them a chance to attend "The Nutcracker", a traditional Christmas entertainment in many countries around the world. The Coast's very own live production includes lavish sets, lovely costumes, beautiful dancing, all to Tchaikovsky's wonderful music. Our continued ability to present this classic holiday ballet depends largely on the revenue generated from our ticket sales, so unfortunately we are not in a position to give complimentary tickets. But with your help, we can make

tickets available to people in the community who would otherwise not have the chance to attend. For a mention in our program you could sponsor two tickets ($50.00), four tickets ($100), 20 tickets ($500). Our ticket prices are $29 for adults, $19 for children (10 and under), so this would be an average price of adults/children. Please contact us at coastingalongtheatre@gmail.com, or 604-989-6050. Thank you for your support. Kathleen Holmes, Artistic director Coasting Along Theatre Society

Vandalism

Elphinstone Logging Focus (ELF) had two signage-banners calling for protection of two forest campaign areas recently vandalized. One banner was in support of ‘The Chanterelle Forest’ along Field Rd, and the second one in support of the ‘Mt. Elphinstone Prov. Park Expansion’ along the B & K Rd. Each banner was torn down, and then destroyed during the week of Nov.16-20. ELF placed these banners up to alert and inform the public about each one of these forest protection campaigns. They were professionally designed, installed high up and safely secured between trees so they wouldn’t blow down and be a hazard in any way. However, when we returned to ‘The Chanterelle Forest’, this

banner had not only been torn down, it was slashed in several places with a knife so that the banner could never be used again. Then, we found the Elphinstone Park Expansion banner had also been vandalized, and similarly shredded using a tool, like box cutters. This activity shows that someone is targeting ELF. We take exception to this, as our approach to forest protection campaigning has always been respectful, and peaceful. ELF’s mandate is to protect intact, older forests on the Sunshine Coast to secure bio-diversity for future generations, while promoting sustainable harvesting in secondgrowth tree farms. Hard times this Christmas on the Coast Times appear to be tougher for many families on the Sunshine Coast this Christmas, with more people than ever asking for a helping hand, according to Elves Club President Lynn Nestman. “Our community took a hit last summer [with the Howe Sound Pulp and Paper layoffs],” Nestman said. “This year, we’re already looking at a 15-to-20-per-cent increase in the number of people applying for help.” Last year, Nestman’s army of volunteers delivered hampers of food and toys to 663 locations from Port Mellon to Egmont, which fed more than 1,500 people. “I think we’ll be delivering well over 700 hampers this year. We’ll probably prepare 750,” said Nestman. The hampers last year each had the equivalent of three boxes full of food.

“I had a lady phone me just recently to tell me how wonderful last year was, and that she wanted to help this year. She said that food fed her family for one month. So that’s pretty cool. “This year it’s going to be even more spectacular,” she said. Nestman, now in her fourth year as president, said the Elves Club focus now is on more nutritional foods. In the past, they spent $5,000 of their $80,000 food budget on tins of cookies. Not anymore. “By taking away the cookies this year, they’re getting milk, cheese, salmon and tuna instead. That’s a better choice.” Elves volunteers will distribute all the hampers on Dec. 19. As a registered charity, some grant money does flow to the Elves Club from pro-

vincial gaming grants. But the organization really depends on the community to provide toys and donate funds for food. One of the biggest toy collection events is the annual Elves Lunch at the Blackfish Pub Tuesday, Dec. 8, from 10 am to 2 pm. “You bring a new, unwrapped toy and you receive a free lunch,” Nestman said. And one of the biggest sources of cash is the Elves Telethon on Coast Cable, this year on Saturday, Dec. 5, which last year generated nearly $14,000 in donations. “The public picks up the majority of our fundraising, they really do. And without them, we can’t do it,” Nestman said. To volunteer or get more information, Nestman can be reached at 886-3966 or 8862222. Rik Jespersen

Notes from the Upper Mainland Nicholas Simons MLA, Powell River and Sunshine Coast

Since my last update the Session ended in Victoria without much fanfare. I had the opportunity to respond to a motion that the government put forward suggesting that they continue to provide supports to people to live independent lives. I pointed to the problems that have only increased since this government came into power and said that inequality would be this government’s legacy, having put all its eggs in the LNG basket. My speech is available on my youtube channel. The Opposition put forward an energy policy, PowerBC, to demonstrate a way for our province to become a leader in promoting alternative energy, creating efficiencies in our homes and businesses, creating jobs throughout the province, all while protecting our farmland. I was honoured to lay a wreath at the Cenotaph in Sechelt this year. Thank you to representatives who laid the Province’s wreath at the other ceremonies, at the Legions in Gibsons, Roberts

The Middle Age Vegan Deb Calderon

I make dozens and dozens of new recipes. But there is one recipe which I always prepare for special days like Christmas and Thanksgiving. This meatless loaf comes from the fantastic site Engine 2. Do yourself a favour and

Festive Loaf

go to www.engine2diet.com and read the story of how the Engine 2 diet came to be. I find the story inspiring. "Lynn’s Meatloaf" reminds me of stuffing. I think it is the herbs in it that are so reminiscent of a holiday meal. I usually cook up some delicious mashed potatoes, Brussel sprouts and carrots, and top it all off with Creamy Golden Gravy (recipe from the Forks Over Knives website). Serve it with cranberry

sauce, and you have yourself a fiesta. One of the greatest gifts I have ever given myself is to change to eating a plantbased diet. For most of my life I ate the Standard American (or Canadian) diet, but I am so glad I made the switch. I feel better and I think I look better. But I also rest easy in my mind knowing that I am making a difference to the animals, and to the earth itself. Happy Holidays.

INGREDIENTS: • 2 stalks celery, chopped • ½ onion, chopped • 2 cloves garlic, minced or pressed • 10 ounces firm tofu, drained • ¼ cup walnuts, finely PHOTO SUBMITTED ground • 1 ½ cups cooked brown lentils • 1 ¼ cups quick-cooking oats • 3 tablespoons soy sauce • 2 tablespoons ketchup (additional for topping) • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard • 2 teaspoons dried parsley • ½ teaspoon each thyme, sage, and rosemary • Ketchup, to taste

Professional storyteller Naomi Steinberg comes to the Sechelt Arts Centre Thursday, Dec. 10 with her latest offering, Goose Feather. Steinberg travelled to France to interview her grandfather because she wanted to know, among other things, how her grandfather, a French national, had helped her grandmother, who was Jewish, survive the Second World War. She premiered the work at the Vancouver Fringe Festival in September 2014 and has been carrying it around the globe ever since. Which is how Steinberg thinks of it—as carrying a story that needs telling. The themes that emerged while she was writing the piece had to do with how we measure things and the road maps we create as we live our lives. “Why don’t I actually go around the planet, cross longitudes, cross latitudes, carry my own prime meridian, see what that means to

make a roadmap in that way,” she says. “It was important, conceptually, for me to think of this as going around the planet carrying a story rather than being an artist who is on tour.” After her run at the Fringe, she carried the story down to L.A., hopped a cargo ship to Australia, made her way to New Caledonia, Hong Kong, China, Japan, Russia (where she premiered the work in French), Norway, France, Switzerland, New York, Montreal, and back to Canada’s West Coast. Her stop in France meant performing the work for family and friends who had known her grandparents. “I was very aware of who was in the audience,” she says. “Afterward a cousin told me it brought back good memories. It was really moving.” Telling stories for 14 years has given Steinberg an affinity for finding and performing stories that inspire courage. “If someone hears of an average person doing an act which is simple yet life-saving, perhaps they will be more likely to take a risk themselves,” she says, noting that her grandfather didn’t think of himself as a hero.

After some research I find that there are no wheelchair taxis here in Sechelt and I want to get my dad home for an early Christmas, on December 15th from 12:00-3:00 p.m.

COINS

But here is my problem... There is no way to transport him with his wheelchair from the Sechelt Hospital to his home in Smugglers Cove. My dad is permanently hospitalized and chances are he will never return home. I want to do this for him as it will probably be his last Christmas. If anyone has an equipped van to transport a patient in a wheelchair I would be eternally grateful for your help. I am willing to pay for your time to fulfill this wish. My name is Charlene and you can call me at 604-885-8289 if you are able to help. I look forward to hearing from you. Kindest wishes.

Astrologer

Aries (Mar 21–Apr 20) You are learning to see the world as with new eyes. This includes seeing a bigger picture yet with the details clearly outlined. In some respects what you see may be hard to take. Endings on relationship fronts may especially prove difficult. Although rebirth follows death, it is the ending process that must be endured first. Each phase serves its own purpose so give each their time and due. Taurus (Apr 20–May 21) In this process of deep changes occurring within you and/or in your world, some stages are more activated and perhaps challenging than others, like now perhaps. Yet sometimes it is such difficult times that evoke creative inspiration and resolve to succeed. The time has come to bring the next phase of what makes you special into the world. The keyword now is vision.

It is the beginning of a new cycle, as every eight years, the troupe is set to learn all new routines and happily enough they are able to do so with all new equipment. New ribbons, ropes, balls and hoops. Awesome! I asked a couple of the gymnasts why they joined the team. Theresa Presley said she likes all the routines, Linsey Davidson said her favourite routine is doing “the dragon” with the ribbon. Abby Jefferies, who has been

a member of the group for two years, says she likes it a lot. In closing, a reminder to all about our Christmas Banquet at the Sechelt Legion. This is a chance for all athletes, coaches and volunteers plus friends and family to gather together to eat, socialize and dance. The Big Man in Red and his trusty elf are rumoured to be making an appearance. It all happens on Dec. 12 from 6-9 pm.

some time have now come to the forefront. To succeed you may have to make a series of very real investments. ‘Paying your dues’ may best describe this process. Doing the inner work has been necessary and will continue. Yet the time has come to explore new avenues of possibility. Sagittarius (Nov 21–Dec 21) Balancing an expansive urge with disciplined thought and action continues. This may well include breaking through limiting perspectives. As well, knowing who you can count on and who you cannot is important. Feeling things out among friends and other possible allies remains ideal. Now the focus is turning to nurture those alliances that feel genuine. Capricorn (Dec 21–Jan 19) You may feel as though you are undergoing a steady process of shedding skins. This can be an awkward and uncomfortable process. On the other hand, you are already beginning to reveal your new skin. This process is destined to continue for a while, so be patient with it and with you. Be willing to share your wisdom yet also be receptive to the wise instruction of others too.

Aquarius (Jan 19–Feb 19) Circumstances of late are revealing some of your true colors. This is a good time to step back and review what is going on. At best you are seeing a bigger picture, travelling perhaps, in-tune with larger affairs in the world and/or simply feeling optimistic about the future. Of course, you may also be quite aware of the plight of humanity. Whatever is happening take note to know yourself better.

Pisces (Feb 19–Mar 20) Your world is beginning to open up. However, this expansive process comes with the sober realization of the efforts, duties and responsibilities implied. With your ambitions on a steady rise the answers you seek are quite simple: concentrate and follow through. The time is right to gain more exposure, yet do not take anyone or anything for granted. You are in something of a probationary period.

Hello all! I’d like to kick off my latest installment by mentioning the very popular sport, floor hockey. Our team, the Sunshine Coast Bears are still hard at it, practicing each Tuesday at Sechelt Learning Centre Gym. Program Coordinator, Annette Bertrand sent this report: “We had four floor hockey athletes travelling to Vancouver to attend the Jon Baillie Skills Competition. Assistant coach Darren Lane took Dustin Archer, Gus Vaughn, Brandon Lacey and Chris Walker over on Sunday, Nov. 29. This was a great opportunity for these four athletes to improve their floor hockey skills and to watch a few high-level floor hockey games.” In the future, the Bears hope to develop the 13-player travelling team necessary to participate in tournaments. I spoke with Gus Vaughn about the opportunity to go to the Skills Competition and he said quite clearly he was “keen on it” and he was looking forward to “taking on a challenge”. Bryan Ware has been a member of the Bears since their formation six years ago. Bryan is also a team member with pretty much every Special Olympics sport here on the Coast! And what of Rhythmic Gymnastics? I talked to the women of ribbon and hoop and found they are still going strong with Head Coach Grace Gardner and assistant coach Vanessa Nieuwenhuis.

drawing table. Focus to get clear and organized and you will feel the rush of power and enthusiasm you have been dreaming about. Virgo (Aug 23–Sep 22) Some big shifts are occurring close to home. These may also be described as activating you at core levels. Either way, you are in a good position to make some big moves. Your leadership potential will shine especially as you tap into weaving your broad visions with practical and realistic measures. Work within at least as much as without so your core strengths are activated. Libra (Sep 22–Oct 22) An extra busy cycle continues. Attending to matters on a variety of fronts is implied. Balancing work with social and cultural activities is featured as well. But now you are determined to take things to their next effective level. You mean business both literally and figuratively. Bringing your talents and efforts to the fore is fine, but you need to be rewarded and handsomely to remain enthusiastic. Scorpio (Oct 22–Nov 21) Some big dreams and visions that have been brewing in the back of your mind for

Gemini (May 21–Jun 21) New commitments on relationship fronts remain in the spotlight. A weave of practical strategies and spiritual attitudes characterize portions of this plot. There may even be dashes of love and romance mixed in. Yet the focus will shift this week. You will be called upon to give more yet. Fortunately, you will likely feel more willing and able to do just that. Cancer (Jun 21–Jul 22) Health is perhaps the single most important thing in life. It can be attributed to mind, emotions, body and soul. Whole health addresses all of the above. This is a central theme now in your life. Are you as healthy as you would like to be? Does denial and complacency play roulette with your present and future happiness? The only person who really needs to know is you. Leo (Jul 22–Aug 23) A new momentum is beginning to build. The cyclic waves it implies will continue for many months, years even. Yet the turn of the tide has begun. Your task now includes having a plan and building a realistic foundation. This may require returning to the
