A Halloween costume display at Your Dollar Store with More in Sechelt’s Tsain-Ko Village Shopping Centre. Costumes are part of what the Retail Council of Canada expects will be a billion dollars in spending, second only to Christmas shopping. And the fact that Halloween falls on a Saturday this year boosts the urge to celebrate, with activities ranging from an afternoon zombie walk in Roberts Creek to fireworks in Madeira Park, and costume parties and dances at bars, halls and Legions across the coast. Not to mention trick-or-treating! See events, Page 8. RIK JESPERSEN PHOTO

Unsightly wires could go underground Sechelt is prepared to kick in an initial $150,000 to help bury the cluster of utility wires strung from pole to pole in parts of the District’s village core. At its Oct. 21 meeting, Council unanimously approved providing two-thirds of the cost of burying 90 metres of wires currently strung between Highway 101 and a lane on the east side of Wharf Avenue just past the Golden City restaurant. The money, to come from the 2016 capital budget, would be spent only if BC

Hydro provided a $75,000 grant toward the project from its Beautification Fund. Council also gave Manager of Engineering Sanath Bandara the go-ahead to apply for the grant. Bandara told Council that the grant application was to have been submitted by Oct. 1, but that BC Hydro was extending that deadline in Sechelt’s case. Council was also told that there are extra costs associated with burying Telus and cable TV wires along with electrical wires in under-

ground conduits, but that BC Hydro would come up with a final estimate if the grant application is approved. The relatively short Wharf Avenue segment is only the first step in a more ambitious vision of burying utility wires in many parts of Sechelt’s Village neighbourhood. The complete 10-phase project would cost between $2,000 and $3,000 per metre, for a total of nearly $6 million. A portion of that could also be paid for with grants from the BC Hydro fund. Editorial Opinion Getting a shot saves lives

Vancouver Coastal Health is encouraging members of the public to get their flu shot - especially babies, young children and seniors. Influenza is highly contagious and can cause serious complications for individuals with weakened immune systems. Every year across Canada, between 4,000 and 8,000 people die from complications due to the flu and pneumonia, and 90 per cent of those who die are seniors. This year’s flu shot for adults protects against three flu strains, the H1N1 and H3N2 strains, as well as a new B strain. New flu vaccines for children will also protect against a second B strain. “For healthy people, falling sick with the flu means a few days of feeling miserable, but for young children, the elderly and those with underlying health conditions, it can lead to hospitalization and ICU admissions,” says VCH Medical Health Officer Dr. Paul Martiquet. “We’re encouraging everyone to get a flu shot so you’re not only protecting yourself, but also the high-risk people around you.” Flu shots are recommended for everyone. They are free in B.C. for all children from six months to five years of age, people 65 years and older, pregnant women, Aboriginal people, and those with chronic health conditions or compromised immune systems. The vaccine is also free for anyone who lives or works with a person who is at higher risk of problems from the flu. “In Canada, influenza causes the most deaths among vaccine-preventable diseases, outpacing all others combined,” says Dr. Martiquet. “You can spread the flu for up to 24 hours before you have any symptoms, so you can pass it on before you even know you’re sick. Getting the flu shot is the best way to prevent catching it or passing it on, and we’re encouraging the public to get their flu shot soon, as outbreaks have already been reported in nursing homes in VCH.” To protect patients in health care facilities, all B.C. health authorities require that doctors, staff, students and volunteers get immunized or wear a mask while at work during the flu season. To further protect patients, VCH is also asking unvaccinated visitors to our facilities do the same, beginning Dec. 1. Masks will be available at nursing stations and/or outpatient reception desks. People planning to visit loved ones in a health care facility or who will take family members to outpatient appointments during flu season are also eligible for a free flu shot. The influenza vaccine works by developing antibodies within two weeks of getting the shot. These antibodies protect against flu viruses circulating in the community. “Since the flu shot contains inactivated virus, it can’t make you sick. The most common side effect of the shot is a sore arm,” Dr. Martiquet explains. “FluMist, which is a nasal spray flu vaccine, contains weakened flu virus and its most common side effect is a runny nose.” Flu clinics throughout the VCH region have already begun; more information can be found on VCH’s Flu Shots & Clinics page (vch.ca). Information on other flu clinics in the community can be located at ImmunizeBC.ca. Submitted

Letters to the Editor – Opinions Thank you, Justin

(Addressed to Prime Minister-designate Justin Trudeau and copied to the Local) Congratulations on your well-earned victory on Oct. 19! Here is an expression of deep gratitude, and a suggestion for a solution to give expression to the popular vote in Ottawa. Here is a heartfelt thank-you for continuing the honourable legacy of your late father. On behalf of the Sunshine Coast Peace Group, I would like to take this opportunity to thank you most profusely for your first action as PMelect, announcing the end of Canada’s bombing of Iraq and Syria. It was with growing dismay that we observed Canada’s increasing international belligerence under the previous administration. This attitude and escalating program of aggression were out of touch with Canadian values. In order to promote respect for popular sentiment by future governments, we suggest that you act immediately to reform the Senate to reflect, as far as possible, the popular vote. You can do this now by inviting the Greens and the NDP to provide lists of nominees to fill vacancies in the Senate. Please begin a tradition of appointing Senators now based on the popular vote in the previous election. Over time, the Senate will thus become a truly meaningful institution for the people, correcting some of the injustice caused by our first-past-the-post system. On a personal note, I would like to express my family’s deep gratitude for your family’s enormous sacrifice on behalf of the well-being of our nation and our world. May the Great Spirit give you continued strength and protection on your journey. May your love grow as you share it with others. Roger Lagassé, Halfmoon Bay Sunshine Coast Peace Group

WE did it

(Addressed to the Justin Trudeau, Tom Mulcair and Elizabeth May and copied to the Local) Congratulations to all of us! Somehow, in spite of our broken first-past-the-post voting system, we joined forces to defeat Stephen Harper. Oct. 19 was a day in the history of citizens’ democracy. We took our country back from the brink of a corporate government greedy for power and control for its own elite, at the expense of everyone else. What is extraordinary and ground-breaking about this election is that we did it at all. For your essential, determined help: Dogwood Initiative, Lead Now, Avaaz.org, Open Media, Friends of CBC, SumofUs.org and in our riding, Sunshine Coast Alliance for Democracy - THANK YOU. For the past nine years, as we realized what was happening in the guise of ‘democracy’ we were frustrated that the parties did not actually consider the benefit and well being of all Canadians. With the brilliant, political move Harper made when he morphed the Conservative brand to himself, we needed a government whose values coincided with the true majority (Libs, NDP & Green) not a (true minority) government who ruled for the elite. But each party stuck to its own turf. Even as The Liberal Party was decimated, even as the NDP surged ahead, even as the Greens knew they’d be stealing votes and endangering a left win, each party became more determined to win for themselves. In the end, it wasn’t really Trudeau who won. Canadian voters did what we had to do. You all forced us to vote strategically. Caitlin Hicks, Roberts Creek

Where there’s wood…

(Re “Wood Rules”, the Local, Oct. 22) The editorial discusses how to handle your wood

this winter, with no acknowledgement of the state of wood smoke pollution on the Sunshine Coast. People accept burning wood here as a 'green' thing to do, seemingly unaware how toxic and unhealthy it is. The argument that man has been burning wood since the beginning of time is often an uneducated reaction to being told it is extremely hazardous to our health. EPA approved wood stoves still emit toxic smoke. Most people do not follow the guidelines for burning wood safely (an oxymoron) and I see people stockpiling cut wood outside their homes in summer, often illegally from the beach, it rains, the wood is soaked, it rains again, they cover with a tarp and trap the damp, then burn it, with dark blue, sometimes nearly black smoke coming out of their chimneys. The Utah Physicians for a Healthy Environment, a pro-active group of medical professionals in that State, who see firsthand the serious health issues arising from living in a heavy wood smoke area, have stated 16 reasons why wood burning, both indoors and outdoors, should be banned in all residential areas. Four of these are: (1) lifetime cancer risk is 12X greater for wood smoke compared to an equal volume of second hand cigarette smoke; (2) wood smoke is the third largest source of dioxins, and dioxin is one of the most intensely toxic compounds known to science; (3) wood smoke easily penetrates homes of neighbors, creating indoor concentrations up to 88 per cent as high as outdoor air; (4) if you smell wood smoke, you are being harmed. The sweet smell comes from deadly compounds like benzene. Once you can smell the smoke, you know the concentration of particulate matter is dangerously high. This means that on the Coast, for most of the fall, win-

ter and early spring months, the air is seriously toxic. Remember last summer’s forest fires and the air quality warnings. Connect the dots. I hear people say they love the smell of smoke; but wood smoke is a serious health hazard. Valerie Pusey, Gibsons

Make it the law

(Re “Low-cost cat neutering”, the Local, Oct. 22) In reference to cat overpopulation, certainly kudos to Eagle Ridge Veterinary Hospital for offering a package deal for low-income people ($50 fee) to properly care for their cats including spay or neuter. From personal experience, I would recommend that any shots or flea treatment not be done at the same time as surgery. Call it system overload. Also, does the fee allow for a series of flea treatments since they are required once a month to be effective? In my opinion, spaying and neutering should have nothing to with 'interested individuals'. It should be mandatory for all cats (and dogs) to be spayed and neutered. Backyard breeding, people who do it for profit, fun, whatever, no matter the reason, should be against the law. You want to be a breeder, get trained and pay a licence fee to do so. Marsha Andrews, West Sechelt

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Letters to the Editor should be sent by e-mail to editor@thelocalweekly.ca. The deadline is Monday at 10am for that week’s paper. Generally, letters should not exceed 300 words. And all letters must be signed, include the writer’s community of residence and (not for publication) telephone number. Letters may be edited for a variety of reasons.

Federal Liberal strength seen across riding A close look at the individual results from the more than 220 polls in West Vancouver-Sunshine Coast-Sea to Sky Country shows the breadth of Liberal Pam Goldsmith-Jones’s dominance in the riding in the Oct. 19 federal election. A total of 66,631 votes were cast in the riding, but 173 were rejected as improperly filled out, leaving 66,458 “valid votes,” according to Elections Canada. The overall result saw Goldsmith Jones win 54.6 per cent of those votes; Conservative John Weston won 26.2 per cent; New Democrat Larry Koopman, 9.9 per cent; Green Ken Melamed, 8.9 per cent; Robin

Kehler, of the Radical Marijuana Party, 0.3 per cent; and Marxist Leninist Carol-Lee Chapman, 0.2 per cent. Although there were just a handful of polling stations on the Coast, each station had a number of different ballot boxes. Each of those boxes is deemed an individual poll. Goldmsith-Jones won all but one of the 61 polls on the Sunshine Coast. That was poll number 78, in Sechelt, which was won by New Democrat Larry Koopman, who drew 104 votes to GoldsmithJones’s 74. Goldsmith-Jones won by a wide margin in all other areas of the riding, too, except for West Vancouver. That’s

where Weston showed his only strength, winning 19 of 79 polls. In addition to the one Sechelt poll, Koopman also won the two polls in Mount Currie and came second in a number of polls in Squamish. Melamed, twice mayor of Whistler, was not dominant in any poll, but did place second behind Goldsmith-Jones in several polls in his home municipality. Not surprisingly, Goldsmith-Jones also showed strength in the 17 advance polls held in early October, winning all but four of them, which went to Weston. Rik Jespersen

ATM theft on camera Sunshine Coast RCMP are asking for the public’s help to identify the male in this photo, who allegedly stole a sum of money from an ATM machine in Sechelt in June of this year. The money was taken after another client accidentally left her debit card in the ATM after she was finished. The male walked up, withdrew a sum of money from her bank account, then left with both the money and the woman’s bank card. Anyone with information about this male or the theft is asked to contact Sunshine Coast RCMP, and reference file #154161. Submitted by RCMP

Stop your pumpkin from being trashed. “Forty-four per cent of what is being placed in curbside garbage is food scraps, kitchen waste and food soiled paper, making it the largest group of material that can be diverted from the landfill,” says Robyn Cooper, SCRD Manager, Waste Reduction and Recovery. “Pumpkins tossed in the trash take up valuable landfill space, and while rotting, contribute to the generation of methane, a potent greenhouse gas.” Instead of trashing your jack o’lantern after Halloween: • Eat them! Like squash, pumpkin is edible and

tasty – and the seeds can also be roasted. • Compost them at home. Chop your pumpkin into pieces and place them in your backyard composter. • Drop them off for composting at a commercial composting operation. “We are calling on all Sunshine Coast residents to consider how their Halloween fun could also avoid more garbage arriving at the landfill,” says Garry Nohr, SCRD Board Chair. “By composting your pumpkin or buying a second hand costume, you are helping achieve the Sunshine Coast’s goal of diverting 65 per cent of our garbage sent-to-landfill by 2016. In addition to composting your pumpkin, here are some ideas for shrinking your

Pet Smarts

Halloween is upon us and, while fun for children, it can be stressful for pets. Recently I was asked if taking a dog with the family while trick-or-treating is a good idea. Unless the dog is extremely comfortable with loud noises, people dressed in unusual clothing, and the excited behavior of children, I would leave him at home. If you choose to bring the dog, make sure he is leashed, wearing identification and is very visible (with a flashing collar and reflective coat available at pet supply place). Pets should be kept inside the house. Many dogs and cats are afraid of fireworks so keeping pets inside prevents them from running off at the sound of fireworks. Contrary

to popular advice in the past, it does not make fear worse in a dog to comfort a frightened dog: it is fine to comfort a dog who is frightened. The sound and sight of trick-or-treaters repeatedly appearing at the front door can be scary for pets, and some dogs may become territorial, so containing dogs and cats in another part of the house reduces their anxiety and prevents a pet from running out the front door. Chocolate and products containing xylitol are poisonous to dogs and novel pieces of costumes can be hazardous to dogs if ingested (in particular, curious puppies, may ingest unusual objects). Keeping these items out of reach of dogs will help avoid an emergency trip to the vet. For pets that find Halloween very stressful despite owners’ efforts to keep them safe and calm, there are products one can use. For example, plug-in dispens-

ers of calming scent (they contain species specific imitation pheromones which often reduce anxiety in cats and dogs) are available at most vets. There are several easily available homeopathic remedies, herbs and flower essences that can help with fear of loud noises and vets can prescribe pharmaceutical products if a pet needs them. Every pet should wear current identification so owners can be contacted quickly when a missing pet is found. Adding a cell number to the identification tag helps reunite owners and dogs quickly. If your pet does go missing, contact the local branch of the SPCA, vets and municipal bylaw departments with a description of your missing pet and location where they were last seen. Post on social media. The local facebook page for missing pets is: https://www.facebook.com/ missingpetssunshinecoastbc

Beginning next week, the Sunshine Coast Regional District (SCRD) is launching a new process and software for dog licensing as part of an effort to curb the problem of lost dogs and to better track licences issued to Sunshine Coast residents. This year only, dog licences for 2016 will be sold beginning Nov. 2. A licence for spayed or neutered dogs is now $25 (up from $15) while

a licence for an unaltered dog is $50 (up from $35), the first increases since 2009. Licences purchased after Jan. 31 double in price. Seniors purchasing a dog licence now receive a 25 per cent discount. When dog owners purchase their pet’s licence this year, the tag and number allocated will remain throughout the life of the dog, removing the need to issue a new tag each year.

The SCRD provides dog control services in Halfmoon Bay, Roberts Creek, Elphinstone, West Howe Sound and to the Sechelt Indian Government District. The Town of Gibsons and the District of Sechelt provide dog control services to citizens living in those municipalities. For more information, visit www.scrd.ca/Dog-Control or call 604-885-6817. Are you planning on going away this winter and would like to add some safe and effective remedies to your firstaid kit? Depending on where you will be going, and the kind of activities you will be doing, homeopathic remedies can be used for a variety of conditions. Homeopathic remedies act quickly, are safe and gentle to use for adults and children, and are especially helpful when medical attention is not readily available and can help prevent conditions from getting worse and ruining your trip. For minor conditions and injuries, here are a few to consider: Belladonna is used for high fevers that come on suddenly during early stages of an illness, sore throats or ear aches that are very red and sore, and injuries that are throbbing and red, as well as, heat stroke with throbbing headache and red face. Glonoine is also useful for heatstroke where the headache is made worse by bending forward. For itchy hives brought on by getting wet or in cold weather, or contact with unknown vegetation, try

Rhus Tox. Hives brought on by bathing, try Urtica urens. Aconite is for shock, panic, fear and restlessness after an injury or accident or for anticipation for those who have a fear of flying. Gelsemium is also helpful for fear of flying when lethargy becomes the dominant symptom accompanying the fear. Arsenicum Album is effective for food poisoning. Ipecac for persistent nausea with vomiting and made worse by the smell of food. Nux Vomica is useful for digestive problems that are brought on my over use of alcohol, coffee and eating rich foods. Veratrum Album is used when there violent diarrhea, colicky cramps and violent vomiting. Pulsatilla for digestive complaints brought on by eating rich foods, especially fats and ice cream. Hypericum is helpful in relieving pain from injuries to parts rich in nerves, such as crushed fingers and toes. Apis is useful for insect bites when there is much swelling and redness. Ledum is also used for insect bites to prevent swelling. Staphysagria is useful for mosquito bites that get large and red. Cocculus is used for motion sickness, either during or right before travel if you know that you or your child are prone to motion sickness where nausea, vomiting and dizzi-

ness are experienced. Ruta is effective for injuries of torn and wrenched tendons, split ligaments of joints and for bruises of bones, better with rest. Rhus tox can be used for wrenched tendons and ligaments that feel better with movement. Arnica is the first remedy after accidents and injuries from falls for bruises and swelling, or for physical over exertion and overstraining. Homeopathic remedies can be found at most pharmacies and health food stores and are compact and easy to travel with. Take the above remedies in a 30c potency and up to 3-5 doses (1-3 pellets) of your chosen remedy 20 – 30 minutes apart at the onset symptoms. Once there is improvement of the symptoms then do not continue taking the remedy. If your symptoms return, however, then repeat the same remedy again. Do not continue to take the remedy if there is no improvement after 3-5 doses; try a different homeopathic remedy that matches your symptoms. If the condition is serious or becomes worse it is advisable to seek medical attention as soon as possible. Homeopathic remedies can be taken while seeking medical attention, or if not immediately available, to help prevent symptoms from getting worse. If symptoms persist beyond your trip, seek professional help.

Lagoon patron

The Ruby Lake Lagoon Nature Reserve Society is pleased to announce that The Honourable Judith Guichon, OBC, Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia, has accepted the Lagoon Society’s invitation to become an Honorary Patron. Patronage, in the sense of support and encouragement of worthy endeavours, is one of many functions of the Office of the Lieutenant Governor and derives from the concept of the Crown as the source of the highest honours and awards granted in our society. “We are very grateful and overjoyed that the Honourable Judith Guichon, Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia, has agreed to be an Honorary Patron of the Lagoon Society in support and recognition of our long standing and continued impact on the Sunshine Coast,” said Dr. Michael Jackson, a founder and volunteer president of the Lagoon Society. “In particular she was delighted to hear about our flagship Nature School Program which has now been running for ten years and also about our Biodiversity Summit in 2012 which led to the creation of the Sunshine Coast Biodiversity Strategy.” You can find out more about the Society on their newly redesigned website, www.lagoonsociety.com Submitted

How do a postal worker and a librarian amass a multimillion dollar art collection on public servants’ wages? That is the intriguing subject of the film Herb and Dorothy, the next film screening of the Sunshine Coast Film Society on Monday, Nov. 2 at 7:30pm at the Gibsons Heritage Theatre. Directed by Megumi Sasaki, Herb and Dorothy is the strangely compelling story of unassuming Herb and Dorothy Vogel who began collecting the work of New York City artists in the early 1960s following some very basic rules: the art had to be affordable, had to fit into their one bedroom apartment, and they had to be able to takeFamily it home Holy

on the subway or in a taxi. “We bought what we liked,” says Dorothy simply, at one point in the film. “We had no other restrictions.” The Vogels used Dorothy’s salary to pay their living expenses, while Herb’s went toward buying art. By the time they started collecting, abstract expressionism (artists like Jackson Pollock and Mark Rothko) and pop art (Jasper Johns and Andy Warhol) had become too expensive for them, so they focussed on minimalist and conceptual artists, painters and sculptors such as Robert Mangold, Donald Judd and Carl Andre, who had yet to make a name for themselves and whose work had not yet been accepted either by the public or galleries. The Vogels purchased many works directly from artists, often on payment plans, and even received a collage of Valley Curtain from Christo and CWL

Jeanne-Claude in exchange for cat sitting services. The Vogels had a passion and an eye for art, making them “mascots of the New York art scene,” as photographer and painter Chuck Close calls them. In 1992, after 30 years of collecting, the Vogels donated their entire collection, 4,782 works that had been

crammed into their apartment, to the National Gallery in Washington, DC. “I believe the collection is built on the generosity of artists,” says Dorothy, acknowledging that their unique relationships with artists who went on to become household names, allowed them to build such an important collection of art-

works. Donating the collection to a gallery that doesn’t charge admission is, for the Vogels, “Giving it back to the people of the United States.” Visit www.scfs.ca for more details and to reserve your ticket or buy tickets at the door. Tickets are $5 for members, $9 for non-members. Annual memberships are $20.

Sechelt residents are no longer allowed to burn garden waste or a variety of other materials - not even during the longstanding autumn grace period - following the approval of a new Open Air Burning bylaw. The bylaw, passed unanimously at the District’s Oct. 21 meeting, prohibits the burning of: toxic materials; garbage; construction waste; demolition waste; and garden refuse. The intent of the new bylaw was to put an end to the two-week period in October

when burning was allowed. During debate on the bylaw at the Oct. 7 council meeting, questions were raised about ending the annual burn period, as it provided an opportunity for owners of larger acreages to dispose of garden refuse without having to haul it away. But Councillor Alice Lutes argued that continuing with the old bylaw was “outrageous” and “a waste of good recyclable materials.” Lutes cited health reasons as well. “I have to speak very

strongly in favour of closing this window because all of us asthmatics have to close our windows in October when everyone is burning,” Lutes said. Mayor Bruce Milne noted that the Clean-Air Society had been pushing for a yearround ban and that, “we are moving to a more urbanized situation, with green-waste disposal now pretty much in place right across the Sunshine Coast, and the time has come to close the window.” Rik Jespersen

For the past 30 years members of the Life Drawing Group have been gathering Tuesdays at the Sunshine Coast Arts Centre to draw the human form. The work in “Life at 30” is from the current generation of artists drawing with the group over the past year. The artists represented in this show come from the length and breadth of the Sunshine Coast; some are professional artists with many decades of experience and others are beginning artists with little experience. The unique quality of the work in this exhibit is due to

the fact that once the model breaks their pose no further work is done on any of the drawings. As a result they have a spontaneity and immediacy not ordinarily seen in exhibitions of art where the usual criteria include finish, polish, and tidy coherence. There is also a time restraint on all of the drawings since poses are timed ranging from one to 30 minutes. The drawings show the freshest “take” on the human form which the artist can bring to bear on the subject. The drawings are unframed and literally “pa-

per” the walls of the gallery space, conveying something of the tremendous fresh unpolished output and much of the diversity of style and mentality of members of the Life Drawing Group. The result is a vibrant exhibition and an impressive celebration of the magnitude and diversity of humanity. The exhibition runs from Nov. 4 -18 at the Doris Crowston Gallery in the Sunshine Coast Arts Centre, the corner of Trail and Medusa in Sechelt. Bats have an image problem As Halloween approaches, images of scary, blood-sucking bats become common place. The Sunshine Coast Wildlife Project, in partnership with the BC Community Bat Program, wants to counter these myths and encourage community members to take action to help bats. “Conserving bats has always been important since over half of the bat species in BC are officially listed as species at risk,” says Wildlife Project Leader Michelle Evelyn. “But now that White Nose Syndrome has arrived in Canada, bat conservation is more important than ever.”

White Nose Syndrome (WNS) is a devastating disease caused by an introduced fungus that was first detected in a cave in New York in 2006. Since it was discovered, it has spread to 26 states and five provinces in North America, decimating bat populations along the way. An estimated six million bats have died from this disease so far and the number continues to climb. “Luckily White Nose Syndrome is not yet in BC” continues Evelyn, “But we are preparing for its arrival by raising awareness about bats, working with landowners who have bats in buildings, enhancing bat

habitat, and monitoring populations.” Building bat-houses is one way to encourage healthy bat populations. With the decline of large trees and undisturbed rock features, some bat species have adapted to using human-made structures, such as bat-houses. These small boxes have several crevices inside that provide a safe, dry habitat where bats can roost during summer months. To find out more about how you can help bats, please visit www.facebook. com/coastwildlife, email coastwildlife@gmail.com or call Dave at 604-989-1007. Submitted

Tip of the Week: As I write the Sun has just entered Scorpio in the Tropical Zodiac as 10:47 am PDT. Pluto which is in Capricorn and which is the ruling ‘planet’ (a rose by any other name…and this one has long, sharp thorns) is at the apex point of a T-Square formed by an Opposition between Uranus in Aries and Mercury in Libra, which is exact on October 25. Mars meanwhile, the traditional ruler of Scorpio and which now shares co-rulership, is in Virgo conjunct Jupiter and Venus, each 2 degrees apart. In my October 16th Horoscope I wrote the following: “While Mars is well placed in Virgo, Venus and Jupiter are both more challenged there. However, the fact that they are closely aligned serves to uplift their respective energies like quality time shared among good friends during challenging times simply chalked-up to bad weather.” As it turns out, the largest hurricane on record, according to news reports, is raging right now on the midwest coast of Mexico and it is heads inland. Experts are even saying it could move right across central Mexico and even grow again as it approaches the Gulf, on the other side of the country! By the time you read this that storm at least will have come and gone but will certainly have left a scourge of deep Scorpionic magnitude. In other words, that part of the world we be inexorably transformed and will be challenged to rise like the phoenix out of its ashes. Aries (Mar 21–Apr 20) The results of a prolonged invitation to deepen the scope and quality of your most intimate relationships should be pouring in by now. Over the past several months, but especially as many weeks, the returns are coming in. Some destinies are deeper than others and free will aside they have a way of producing predictable results. The other question is how to best respond. Taurus (Apr 20–May 21) Slowly but surely you are no longer quite the person you were a short while ago. This process will continue for many months. Yet already the signs are clear. These will bring challenges to decipher and define what makes you special. You are probably already quite busy answering this question. That you have to give more than usual is part of this plot. Gemini (May 21–Jun 21) More than just a new chapter, the next sequel in your life has begun. It includes commitment primarily to your immediate family and friends. To this end you probably have reason to feel confident, yet you may also have to adjust to another kind of busy schedule. Getting comfortable may also re-

underway. At deeper levels you may be busy dissolving inner doubts and indecision. At best these are serving to activate fresh inspirations, ideas and creative plans. Sagittarius (Nov 21–Dec 21) Despite a busy time of late making progress perhaps especially in your public, professional and social spheres, you may feel the need to retreat for a while. Some attention will still be directed towards gathering new knowledge, skills and tools. If you cannot get away entirely, balancing outer social responsibilities with a lot of private time at home might just do the trick. Capricorn (Dec 21–Jan 19) Exploring a fuller scope of your individuality is underway. This may lead you to examine what is healthy and balanced and what is not. In fact, there is reason to say that this process has been happening for the past several months. Consequently, prior commitments in both your public/professional life and that of your private/family are ending as new ones begin. Aquarius (Jan 19–Feb 19) A sudden turn of events in your public and professional life is getting your full attention. Circumstances are pushing you to give more and work harder than usual. This includes a mix of ambitious drive and active empathy. Positively, you are experiencing a healthy flow of returns for past efforts over the years. Expect this pace to continue and expect the unexpected. Pisces (Feb 19–Mar 20) An expansive cycle continues to call you out. It will however require more discipline and extra efforts. Reaching out to new connections and proposing creative collaborations may also prove necessary. As well, you may have to double up on your diplomatic efforts for pretty much the rest of the year. In the short term, concentrating your focus on deeper studies will provide needed balance.

quire home improvements. Cancer (Jun 21–Jul 22) Despite a fresh flow of creative inspirations and invitations to play, you remain in a busy cycle. Whether by choice or circumstance you have a lot of work to do. Fortunately, your energy levels are probably running quite high still. Pace yourself and prepare for yet another round of multi-tasking. Tuck in some cultural activities to keep your spirits up and your energy reserves high. Leo (Jul 22–Aug 23) Reaching within more deeply than you have for a while is now in focus. Your ambitions remain strong yet you may realize that you have to work within as much as without. This includes cultivating inner peace and confidence to accept and understand that there is a greater destiny at play. A major learning curve is rising, yet patience is a pre-requisite for success right now. Virgo (Aug 23–Sep 22) An expansive cycle continues. This may include direct action but may simply amount to seeing a bigger picture of possibility. As a steady stream of change in your lifestyle progresses, you may notice that old players have left the stage and new ones have arrived. Yet it is the larger reality of the changing times and how to best adapt that must be addressed. Libra (Sep 22–Oct 22) Working behind the scenes to produce measurable results without continues. Deciphering new and better ways to earn money is featured. The advent at least of new opportunities is also indicated and some of these doors may already have opened. Thanks to your own outreach efforts this is probably true. But the will take a while to achieve full momentum. Scorpio (Oct 22–Nov 21) Your world is changing quickly now. However, some of these changes may not be so apparent. Beneath the surface of what might otherwise be a busy, breakthrough pace, subtler processes are
