The forestry company operating in the Chapman Creek watershed has not maintained proper control of erosion and as a result sediment has been detected in the waterway, which is the source of nearly 90 per cent of the Sunshine Coast’s drinking water, the SCRD has been told. The SCRD’s regular environmental monitoring of the area was suspended at the end of October, but district staff detected “clear evidence” of sediment in the water during spot inspections they had since made at the logging site, engineering technician Monte Staats told the SCRD Board at its meeting Dec. 4. It was the first meeting of the newly elected board, which had been sworn in earlier in the day. West Howe Sound Director Ian Winn said he was troubled by the staff report. “It is very alarming to see what’s happening. It’s unfortunate that we can’t take quicker action… to watch over it and to provide the monitoring that’s needed,” said Winn. “The responsibility goes back to AJB.”

scolded the Board for not being more proactive. “As concerned citizens, we find it strange that this would be the time when things are getting worse that you would stop the regular monitoring. You would think that’s one thing that should definitely be continued,” Penner said. Board Vice-Chair Frank Mauro responded that the SCRD’s hands were tied. “Monitoring will be performed as available. A constant monitoring program is, I think, not within the current scope of the SCRD,” said Mauro. SCRD Chief Administrative Officer John France told the Board the issue was not being ignored. “We do continuous monitoring of turbidity at the water treatment plant,” France said. “We can’t basically raise an issue until demonstration of detrimental effect on water quality. “ France added that district staff would continue to monitor the situation and report to the Board in January or February. “We’ll certainly keep an eye on it,” he said.

AJB Investments, with headquarters in North Vancouver, owns the land and has been building roads in the area. After a blockade, organized by Hans Penner of Elphinstone Logging Focus (ELF), the company agreed in October to suspend operations in the watershed area until the new year. At the board meeting, Staats said the initial finding of sediment in the creek prompted a series of letters of concern among the SCRD, the Vancouver Coastal Health Authority, the Private Managed Forest Land Council and AJB. But the flurry of correspondence did not accomplish much. “[AJB] did a little bit of work to address [the concerns] but it appeared to be inadequate, so we sent a follow-up letter further highlighting those concerns and further requesting that they install and maintain adequate erosion and sediment control measures to control runoff away from the site,” Staats told the Board. Hans Penner, at the meeting as a member of the public, asked to speak to the issue and

Into the black: Coast real estate firm sold signs, and business cards imprinted with the new logo. “We are thrilled to welcome the Sussex team to the Royal LePage family,” Phil Soper, President and CEO of Royal LePage said in a news release. “This transaction is a game-changer in British Columbia’s Lower Mainland, adding more strength and quality to the nation’s largest real estate company.” Alan Stewart of Sussex will remain on board as General Manager, the release said. The company said that Royal LePage now has a more

In his first speech as newly inaugurated mayor, Bruce Milne said Sechelt had been through a revolution over the course of the recent election campaign that launched him back into office for the third time in 18 years. “We have here in Sechelt a minor revolution, a community uprising in a sense, without a gunshot, without a single act of violence, without even protests in the street,” Milne said of his Nov. 15 defeat of incumbent John Henderson and the election of three new members to the six-person council. “When the most threatening political act that a candidate fears is a letter to the editor or an avalanche of bumper stickers rather than an avalanche of bullets, we can count our blessings for the peace, order and good government that is our heri-

“ Minor Revolution” brought him to power, says Milne mayor and Alternate Director to the board of the Sunshine Coast Regional District. Lutes was named to both posts, although Milne will act as the primary SCRD Director for Sechelt. In his address, Milne spoke at length about the shíshálh First Nation, and expressed gratitude for its continuing gestures of welcome and co-operation to non-natives, despite their long history of exploitation and degradation of aboriginals. The new mayor also made veiled references to the previous municipal government, vowing to end what he called a cycle of secrecy, hostility and fear, which he said, “will take some time to overcome.” “Trust is a complex and fragile currency in any community. It has been tarnished and devalued in Sechelt,” said Milne. “You will be able to hold us accountable and while we may squirm, we will not lash out. There will be no rants,” he said to applause. After quoting Mahatma Gandhi, who advised that “we seek to be the change we want to see in the world,” Milne promised a council that would be caring and respectful, and invoked the words of the Dalai Lama: “The key to a happier and more successful world is the growth of compassion.” The next regular council meeting is scheduled for Dec. 17. Editorial Opinion

Drink, drugs and driving: The RCMP is looking for you The Sunshine Coast RCMP’s holiday season Counter Attack campaign has begun. Every year, police across Canada respond to collisions where impaired drivers have injured or killed people because they chose to drive while they were impaired. Impaired driving is entirely preventable, and has immense costs and devastating effects in communities such as the Sunshine Coast. 27 percent of motor vehicle fatalities involve impaired driving, and therefore impaired driving enforcement is a national priority of the RCMP. Sunshine Coast RCMP Cst Harrison Mohr highlights how impaired driving continues to be an issue here on the Sunshine Coast, after charges of refusing to provide a breath sample were forwarded against a young man last week: This young man chose to drive after leaving a local pub, and rolled the truck he was driving in West Sechelt. He made the conscious decision to drive, and that decision easily could have killed him, the 3 passengers he had with him, or any other person on the roads that night. Cst Mohr said that luckily in this instance no one was seriously injured, but it could have been much worse. Sunshine Coast RCMP will be targeting impaired drivers throughout this holiday season, setting up road checks all over the Coast, and looking for drivers impaired by both drugs and alcohol. Cst Mohr asks the community to speak up and take a stand against impaired driving. If you see someone getting behind the wheel after they’ve been drinking, say something, or call 911. Sometimes one friend encouraging another not to drive can go a lot further than any message from the police. For those who do decide to drive after drinking too much, RCMP have a warning for those individuals: If you choose to drive while impaired, will be looking for you, and we are taking a zero-tolerance approach to all impaired drivers. Letters to the Editor – Opinions Christmas Shopping on the Sunshine Coast

I am a true blue community booster and shop local regularly especially at Christmas time. On December 3rd I was completely done my Christmas shopping. Yes, I make a list. And yes, I start early. AND I shop local. We keep our Christmas giving simple - keeping to mostly items like books, music (CDs), consumables, special Christmas tree ornaments and items to wear. We purchase things from school groups raising money such as chocolates from the Chatelech grad class, poinsettias from the Elphi grad class. We donate to local charities - a gift to family and friends who have everything. We give the gift of entertainment - tickets to a ballet or concert - on the coast and off. I make handmade ornaments and jams. We find most everything for our friends and family right here on the coast. When was the last time your strolled Cowrie Street or Gibsons Landing? We are so fortunate to have such unique, friendly and specialty stores on the Sunshine Coast. I challenge everyone to do the same... and I guarantee you will find something for everyone on your Christmas list plus boost our local economy. It is a very satisfying feeling during the Christmas season.

Saving Branch 140

Remembrance Day has come and gone and it would be appropriate to reflect on what happened. As everyone could see, it was clear, that the Branch played a significant role in drawing a large crowd to the official ceremony and bringing many people together afterwards inside the comfortable surroundings of Sechelt Branch 140. The Legion, veterans, and Branch 140 were on most people’s mind for all the right reasons. It was also clear, that Branch 140 was playing a significant role for the community on this important day. Naturally, we all want people to feel and think this way for the rest of the year as well, but that is easier said than done, especially when one realizes that this Branch is run by volunteers and does so on a shoestring budget. Keeping itself going has become a difficult task. It is no secret, that the Branch finds itself in a precarious situation, largely due to significant annual deficits over the last 4 years. Much has been written about the causes of this predicament. However, this Branch cannot survive withSherryl Latimer, Sechelt out the efforts of volunteers. unaware that their Legion is operated by volunteers. Only a handful of people are actually paid employees, such as the chef and a few bartenders. After the Ladies Auxiliary stopped running the kitchen in 2010, the Branch had to hire paid help, virtually turning a small surplus into a significant deficit. The only way the Branch was able to cope over the last 4 years was the fact that some money was set aside for a rainy day. Those reserves are about to run dry and unless something concrete happens over the next year and a half, the Branch will be forced to close its doors. Furthermore, it is not widely known , that all those kind contributions to the Poppy Fund and other charitable activities are in fact going to the veterans and other charities . None of the money of the Poppy fund is used for operational purposes. Finally, the picture for Branch 140 could get even worse: as the Branch has been operated by a select group of extremely dedicated volunteers, often the same people year after year, those Date people are now tired and frustrated. This makes the upcoming Branch elections on Dec. 14 a crucial process as Provincial powers have dictated, that if the Branch is unable to field a full slate of people for the Executive , the Branch will have to close! It is now time for members and the community at large to follow the famous words of the late John F. Kennedy who at one time challenged his citizens “ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country”. Substitute the word “country” with “local Legion” and you have the rallying slogan to help save Sechelt Branch 140. Paul Lith, Branch 140 finance committee

Sechelt businesses attacked Sunshine Coast RCMP are investigating after a vandal smashed the windows of numerous businesses in downtown Sechelt in the early morning hours of Saturday, December 6. Within the span of about half an hour, four businesses in the downtown core had a rock thrown through their window, while a shopping cart was used to break the glass of a fifth business. Nothing was taken from any of the

businesses, and it does not appear that there was any intent to break and enter the premises. Cst Harrison Mohr said police do not believe the businesses were targeted for any specific reason, but clearly the person that did this gave absolutely no thought to all the hard work these owners put into their businesses, and the pride they take in being a part of this community. Police do have a person of interest, but ask anyone

We’re not going to destroy or damage anything that nature gave us,” said Lumley, who owns two restaurants on the Gibsons waterfront. “Let’s get all the information, let’s weigh it, let’s make an intelligent decision on it,” he said. According to Rowe, it will be some time before all the information is in. A crucial report on the effects of the hotel construction on the Gibsons aquifer is likely months away from completion. The mayor noted that the drilling of test holes, which will yield key information for the report, had yet to be started. Among the many who attended the inaugural and the reception was White’s father Howard White, the founder of Harbour Publishing and a former candidate for the provincial legislature. He said he was “savouring every second” of his son’s success. “I messed around in politics myself for quite a few years” White said, “and I’m very happy to be passing the torch to my son, and he seems to know what to do with it.” The younger White served three terms as a local school trustee, starting in 2005.

elected Nov. 15, along with newly elected Councillors Stafford Lumley, Jeremy Valeriote and Silas White. Neither of the councillors who went down to defeat, Lee Ann Johnson and Dan Bouman, attended the meeting, but Rowe did acknowledge them in his speech. “Both of them have devoted much time and effort on behalf of our community. I’d like to formally extend our thanks and appreciation to them for their contributions,” said Rowe. Rowe said after the election last month that invitations had been extended to Johnson and Rowe for formal thanks to be made to them at the Dec.16 meeting. The new council’s first act was to appoint White as the Gibsons Director on the board of the Sunshine Coast Regional District, with Valeriote, a former SCRD staff member, as the Alternate Director. At a reception on the upper level of the Market following the council meeting, Lumley acknowledged that the fate of the controversial George Hotel proposal was the prevailing issue during the campaign. Gibsons newly elected town council was sworn in before an enthusiastic overflow crowd at the Gibsons Public Market Dec. 2, with Mayor Wayne Rowe suggesting that issues will be dealt with differently in the future to avoid some of the antagonistic council meetings of the past year. “We will be considering revisions to council procedures to ensure that council business is conducted efficiently and respectfully,” Rowe said in his inaugural address, after he and the four councillors took their oaths. “We will seek the advice of committees established as necessary with specific objectives and clear parameters,” Rowe said. “We will also consider ways in which we can provide a forum for meaningful dialogue on matters of general or specific interest.” Rowe did not specify what changes he had in mind, but tension over the proposed George Hotel project spilled over into confrontations at some council meetings over the past year. The next council meeting is scheduled for the evening of Dec. 16, but it’s not clear if Rowe will lay out some of his proposed changes then or wait until the new year. Congratulations to Mr. Brian Moore for a very successful 37 year career with Lehigh Materials Ltd. It is very rare to hear these days that an individual is as dedicated and loyal to one career for this amount of time! Brian transferred to the Sechelt Operation 25 years ago from Construction Aggregates Ltd. Hillside – Port Mellon. He played an important roll in the commissioning of the Sechelt Pit. He repaired loaders, re-built buckets and kept our mobile equipment in operation from the start. Brian utilized his expertise operating every piece of mobile equipment we had on site; Dozer, Excavator, Loader, Rubber Tired Backhoe and Grader. He also took the time out of his busy schedule to take some of our junior operators under his wing so he could share his knowledge. We are fortunate enough that we will utilize his skills in years to come through the operators that he has trained in the past! Thank you Mr. Brian Moore for all your years of service and dedication. Wishing you all the best in your future endeavors!

I thought not only of my own father, who served in World War II, but also of Warrant Officer Patrice Vincent and Corporal Nathan Cirillo, who lost their lives on Canadian soil in October. As Nate Dolha of the Squamish Chief recently reminded us, these two men joined over 114,000 Canadian men and women who have died since World War I in the defence of democracy, freedom, and the rule of law. I wish you a Merry Christmas and a happy, healthy 2015. I look forward to the great things we are going to accomplish together in the year to come.

Both of them have devoted much time and effort on behalf of our community and I would like to formally extend our thanks and appreciation to them for their contributions. The election of the new Council has generated a lot of excitement and more than a little hope for real progress. I am personally excited by the

This house on Reef Rd. in Sechelt was heavily damaged in what police believe was a deliberately-set fire on Dec. 2. RCMP Photo Police continue to investigate after being called to a house fire at 5812 Reef Road in Sechelt shortly before 4 pm on December 2. The Sechelt Fire Department called RCMP after getting reports of a fully-engulfed house fire. After further investigation by the Fire Department and an RCMP arson investigator, police believe this fire was deliberately set said Cst Harrison Mohr with Sunshine Coast RCMP. The fire gutted most of the upper floor of the FOR SALE BY OWNER

home, the garage, and a vehicle in the garage. This was a large and intense house fire that not only caused extensive property damage, but needlessly risked the lives of fire fighters and other emergency responders. As such, we are taking this criminal act very seriously. Police are confident this was an isolated incident, specific to that residence. Police ask anyone who saw anything suspicious around the time of the fire to call

the RCMP if they have not yet been spoken to by police. We would like to speak with anyone who saw any persons going to or leaving the residence before or after the fire started, or anyone that knows who was living at or staying at the residence. Police reinforce that in a case like this, even the smallest detail can be of great assistance. Call Cst Harrison Mohr with the General Investigations Section, at (604) 885-2266. Submitted

To this end we will be considering revisions to council procedures to ensure that council business is conducted efficiently and respectfully. As community input is vital to an effective Council we will seek the advice of committees established as necessary with specific objectives and clear parameters and we will also consider ways in which we can provide a forum for meaningful dialogue on matters of general or specific interest. Our core services must remain our number one priority. We will need to remain firm in our resolve to adhere to this strategy, notwithstanding pressure to fund other worthwhile initiatives. Finally, I want to thank you, the residents, for the faith that you have placed in the members of this Council. It is on your behalf that we assume the responsibility of guiding our Town during this next term. I have no doubt that the members of this Council, with your guidance, will devote their efforts to making our Town better and stronger and a place that we will all be proud to call home.

energy and enthusiasm of the members of this Council. It would be presumptuous for me at this time to enumerate a list of what we intend to accomplish this term as that will require our collective agreement. Rather, I prefer to focus on the “how” rather than the “what”. Firstly, we should not expect any immediate dramatic actions. To achieve something that will endure with the passage of time and withstand the inevitable turbulence along the way requires a solid foundation. Equally important is the building of trusting and respectful relationships, not only among council but also with our dedicated Town staff and with our neighbouring communities. Respect is a two way street and deserves to be reciprocated. To borrow from some words of Stephen Lewis: “we will strive to nurture an environment where people of different ideological convictions have respect for each other, where policy is debated rather than demeaned and where contentious issues are given thoughtful consideration.”

Is Christmas stressful? Learn to simplify and say “no”. The pressure to create a perfect Christmas and spend time with family when you really want to say “no” can be stressful. If you feel a sense of obligation and guilt to give and also spend time in a way that is not true to your needs, or over-extend yourself emotionally, physically and financially to please others this can create stress on many levels. The cultural pressure during the Christmas season to over-spend on gifts and overindulge on rich foods is difficult to avoid. Foods that are high in sugar and saturated or trans fats can temporarily elevate your mood or have a numbing effect. Some people turn to these kinds of foods for emotional comfort, especially during times of stress. The same can also be with gift giving. Over-giving can stem from an underlying feeling of unworthiness or guilt. If you have young children this is an ideal time to begin

to revisit your values and break old patterns. Children do not need a lot of gifts to be happy, in fact too many can create stress for them. Spending more time with your children and being emotionally available to them is more meaningful than another gift. The Mayo Clinic states, “Indeed, stress symptoms can affect your body, your thoughts and feelings and your behavior. Being able to recognize common stress symptoms can give you a jump on managing them.” If you become depressed around Christmas, then it is time to make some changes or seek professional help. If you notice that you develop physical symptoms or an existing condition worsens, then possibly some underlying emotional issues are at play.

Working with modalities that understand the mind/ body connection, such as homeopathy, can help you become aware of how your emotions are affecting your physical health. Healing the underlying emotions that are triggered during the Christmas season can alleviate susceptibility to stress and tendencies to over-extending yourself. Christmas can be a joyous and magical time of year and needn’t be stressful. Being with loved ones on special occasions can be a meaningful and loving experience if coming from a genuinely healthy place. If this is not your experience, then consider seeking some help to heal your wounds so that you can begin to experience joy and good health all year round.

The 2014-18 District of Sechelt Council would like to thank members of the community who joined us at our December 3rd, 2014 Inaugural Meeting. For those who were unable to attend, an audio recording of the proceedings and a digital copy of Mayor Milne’s address can be accessed on Sechelt.ca. We also want to thank those who have served on Council over the past term and recognize the time served by Mayor John Henderson and Councillors Doug Hockley, Tom Lamb and Chris Moore. We recognize that all past and returning members of Council offered their best efforts to the task of governing our community and deserve our thanks for doing so. Sechelt Council’s Inaugural Meeting began with an acknowledgement that our community lies within Shishalth traditional territory. Expanding on our community’s recent Act of Recognition of the Shishalth culture, laws and protocol, Council is committed to having our community to take the next step and find a genuine reconciliation of who the Shishalth are and who we are. In addition, Council recognized the need for a different kind of reconciliation within our own community. Sechelt needs to learn how to disagree, how to manage differences, without

anger, intimidation or dismissal. We need to learn to embrace difference and diversity as strengths and not as things to eliminate. We made a commitment to govern with compassion and care. If we all take care with how we live, Sechelt will be a better place. As Council, our commitment is to take care of our community, to seriously care about what we do and how we do it.

In return, we ask the community to please take care of us – encourage us when we are tired, strengthen us when we are weak – care for your Council, with compassion, so your Council can take care of your community. We look forward to serving our community and extend best wishes to all for a safe and Happy Holiday Season.

Wreaths are synonymous with the holiday season and they can range from intricate to simple to flashy to rustic. Creating festive wreaths does not necessarily require a lot of skill, and wreaths can be fashioned from a variety of different materials. The first step to crafting wreaths is to gather the foundation pieces. This usually involves a sturdy material

that will serve as the wreath round. It can be vine, foam, branches, or even wire. You’ll also need decorative items that fit the theme of your wreath. These may be berries, ornaments, ribbons, bows, and other trinkets that will be attached to the wreath. Florist wire and tape can be used to attach the ornaments to the wreath. “Say cheese” wreath

Purchase a premade evergreen wreath or wrap boughs of pine around a wreath frame to make your own. Glue or tie on small wooden frames with photos of the family to the wreath. Fill in the barren spots with small bows and ornaments. Fruitful wreath Instead of an evergreen wreath, create something festive and edible. Fruit and vegetables in vibrant colours can be used to fashion a wreath. Use picks or wire to attach oranges, lemons, limes, clementines, and any other produce desired to a foam wreath. Use leaves to fill in sparse areas and a thick ribbon to hang the wreath. Holly vine wreath Purchase a plain grapevine wreath and decorate it with sprigs of holly leaves and stems with berries. Simple and festive, this wreath should take only a few minutes to make and then hang. Metallic wreath Add a glamorous touch to an evergreen wreath with faux fruit and pine cones that you paint with glimmering metallic colours. Intersperse items in gold, copper and silver for an eye-catching piece that can adorn any spot in

your home. Add a few twinkling lights to reflect off of the metallic elements to add even more appeal. Bells or glass ornament wreath Use flexible wire to string a wreath of metal bells or glass ornaments together in a ring shape. Bells not only look nice but also lend a gentle twinkling sound anytime the door is opened. Floral wreath Make a fresh flower wreath from a florist’s wreath and fresh blooms. Soak the foam wreath in water according to the packaged directions. Trim flower stems (carnations are durable) and insert the stems into the wreath. Attach a bow to the bottom of the wreath and then hang. This is one wreath that is best displayed the day of the festivities because it has a short shelf life. Cinnamon wreath This wreath looks beautiful and gives off that quintessential holiday aroma. Begin with a foam wreath and wrap with a two-inch wide ribbon to cover. Use hot glue to secure cinnamon sticks all around the wreath. For more colour, add sprigs of holly, bows or mistletoe. Metro

Pender Harbour choir a hit at concert

The Pender Harbour Choir held their Christmas concerts Dec. 5 in Davis Bay and Dec.7 in Madeira Park. The concerts were well-attended and featured striking seasonal music by Canadian composers and arrangers, including two from Pender Harbour. Kenneth Johnson’s “Christmas Lullaby”, a song from his upcoming stage production, Castles In The Snow, was premiered by the choir and directed by him. Corlynn Hanney’s “Christmas Angel” was also a lovely addition to the program. The 34-member choir is directed by Joy Macleod and accompanied by Paula Seward. Submitted

Whether you’ve had hardwood floors for a long rime or just discovered them under old carpeting, you’ve probably considered refinishing them. Waxing and/or buffing often provides a good shine but refinishing the floor is usually the only way to regain the original richness and beauty of the wood.

Tip of the Week: December 12, 2014 or 1212-2014, may not have quite the same impact as 12-12-2012 had, but it does present its own opportunity to speak of some of the virtues of the number 12. There is much more to it that may at first be apparent and the list of correspondences are many. In the human body there are 12 cranial nerves. In Chinese Medicine there are 12 tendinomuscular meridians, 12 divergent meridians, 12 principal meridians and 12 cutaneous regions. Once of the 5 Platonic Solids is the Dodecahedron which is comprised of 12 sides. A circle, which symbolizes a cycle and a sphere when divided into two then four presents the platform of 4 elements, 4 seasons and 4 principle directions and where each season has a beginning, middle and end provides a foundation for 12 solar months and 12 Zodiac Signs. The Circle divided by 12 is archetypal and not merely convenient or arbitrary. This is an indication of the true Zodiac, the wheel of life which is the measurement of the apparent cycle of the Sun producing the seasons. Astronomers especially seem quite confused about this as dogmatic assertions about 13 are regularly presented these days. This is the blinding influence of hubris. Western, Vedic and Chinese
