Shop locally this holiday season P

resently there are several great initiatives being set in motion to help encourage Sunshine Coast residents to shop locally this holiday season. There is the shop local Christmas contest that has offered up over $4000 in prizes. Your local businesses came together to offer trips, a romantic night at a B&B, a $1000 youth sports package, food, health and wellness cer-

tificates, babysitting services, clothing and more. This online contest was put together by Duane Burnett and is a volunteer effort in support of our community. Burnett came up with the idea this past summer, and the response from businesses was so positive he had to cut it off at 28 prizes which are bundled into 12 prize packages over 12 days from December 1 to 12. Contact Burnett on

facebook for more details. The Gibsons and Sechelt Chamber of Commerce along with the Sechelt Downtown Business Association have also set up a Buy Local Challenge for Sunshine Coast residents. Their campaign outlines the economic benefits to buying local this holiday season. For more information please contact your respective Chamber of Commerce.

rize-winning poet and novelist Alison Pick, much-praised author of the prestigious Man Booker Prize long-listed Far to Go, reads at the SC Arts Centre in Sechelt, Saturday December 1 at 8 pm. Far to Go is the moving story of a Jewish Czech family whose lives are turned upside down by the arrival in the Sudetenland of Hitler’s army. Herself the grandchild of Jewish refugees fleeing the Nazi horror, Alison Pick represents a new generation of Canadians confronting the Holocaust, asking how what happened to our grandparents has affected who we are today. No stranger to awards, Pick’s Far to Go won the Canadian Jewish Book Award for fiction and was a Top 10 of 2010 Book at Now magazine and The Toronto Star. Her first novel, The Sweet Edge, was a Globe & Mail Top 100 Book of 2005. Named in 2002 the Bronwen Wallace most promising writer under the age of 35, she went on to win the 2003 National Magazine Award for Poetry and the 2005 CBC Literary Award

Editorial Opinion Let your voice be heard

A

s you know, the Sunshine Coast is a very unique place that stretches from Langdale to Egmont along the Salish Sea. It is basically connected by one main highway from top to bottom although there are many trails and back roads to explore its nooks and crannies. After travelling across Canada and around the world, one can quickly deduce that this area could potentially be the most livable place on earth. Geographically, it is a temperate rainforest, which means that we receive over 1400 millimetres of rain in a year. That doesn’t sound so good at first, but with the global demand for water increasing daily, and most places going through desertification due to global warming and development, the rainfall should be seen as a gift more than anything. It was my own son the other day that reminded me of this fact. He mentioned that he had learned in school that some people walk 5km to fill up one container of water; and it’s not even clean water! The Coast never seems to never get too hot or cold throughout the year. Especially compared to other places across Canada. MyDestination.com tells us that it is generally about 21.3 degrees Celsius in the summer, and usually about about 6 degrees Celsius in the winter. This means that we can be outside enjoying life or working even in the height of summer, and going for hikes and jogs while many things are still growing in the garden all winter long. Incredible really! It is home to the shíshálh Nation, a group of people that have lived here for centuries and now hold jurisdiction over their lands. They exercise the authority to provide services and education for their residents. They have cared for and been wise stewards of the land for centuries and represent the true history of this area. The overall demographics on the Coast also speak to the fact that our Coast is an amazing place to live. Why else would so many people sell everything they have and move here to retire? People realistically work their whole lives in places like Montreal, Winnipeg or Calgary and then leave family and friends behind to move here. Just take a peek outside your window today as you drive into Sechelt, or through Lower Gibsons and it becomes evident why people are so willing to leave their old lives and choose to reside here. There are also those old Coast families who have lived here for 50 plus years and have had to sit by and watch the influx of people set up shop here over time. It must be difficult for them and others to see the development and growth. Our Coast is feeling growing pains across the board right now and it feels like it is dividing residents rather than bringing them together. The only answer can be more communication and the sharing of ideas. This will help the Coast develop solid plans that reflect the needs of everyone in our community. We live in a time where the decisions we make now will either leave the next generation with an amazing future, or a big mess. I truly believe we are on the right track and after attending the Voice On The Coast meeting on Monday night many people have been inspired again to become less apathetic and more active in their community. The room was packed (standing room only) with Coast residents interested in discussing ways to create a better place for everyone here. This new organization was founded by Silas White and Chad Hersler, and wouldn’t be possible without the generous support of local organizations like the Sunshine Coast Community Fund and the Sunshine Coast Credit Union. Remember, we live in an incredible place but it is more important now than ever to engage in local issues and let your voice be heard. It’s as simple as talking to family and friends about the future of BC Ferries or even just buying local this holiday season. Jim Dorey, Editor

Letters to the Editor – Opinions Some bears may not hibernate at all The Sunshine Coast Bear Aware Program will be going into hibernation for the winter. Hibernation is an important survival strategy for bears when their natural food sources, such as green vegetation, berries, insects and fish, are no longer available. In the fall, bears experience a biological stage called hyperphagia. During this stage, bears prepare for hibernation by eating up to 20,000 calories per day in order to gain enough weight to survive the winter. In some cases, “foodconditioned” bears that are still able to access a nonnatural food reward (such as residential or commercial garbage) may not hibernate at all. Most black bears on the Sunshine Coast hibernate or den from December until March. Bear cubs are born in the den, usually during January and February. However, bears do not go into true hibernation because their body temperature and metabolic rate do not decrease as much as in other hibernating species and they may wake up relatively easily during their winter sleep. So please remember to remain “aware” when you are enjoying your winter activities! Thank-you to the Sunshine Coast Regional District (SCRD) and the Brit-

ish Columbia Conservation Foundation (BCCF) for their sponsorship of the local Bear Aware program. The support and partnership of the local Conservation Officer Service (COS), and our volunteers, were instrumental in the success this season. I would also like to thank the residents of the Sunshine Coast, for supporting the mandate of Bear Aware and for recognizing it’s significance towards the future of wildlife and community co-existence. For more information, please visit www.bearaware. bc.ca Kim Drescher, Sunshine Coast

High ferry costs damage our local economy The only long-term resolution to arrest and reverse BC Ferries’ escalating fares and impending service cuts is to take our ferries back as a crown corporation. In 2003 Gordon Campbell set up BC Ferries as a nominally independent corporation to be run on a user pay model. Rather than view our ferries as the marine links of our highways infrastructure, no different than a road or a bridge, the Campbell mandate requires BC Ferries to re-coup the majority of costs through fares. This has driven up fares at four and a half times the rate of inflation! In contrast, the Department of Highways operates

fourteen inland ferries, all of which are free of charge. In 2011 Ferry Commissioner Gordon Macatee conducted town hall meetings throughout BC’s coastal ferry dependent communities. What he heard was that our ferries are our highways and should be treated and funded as such. What he concluded was that fares had reached ‘the tipping point’ and that ferry usage was now on the decline as a result. The scheduled increases exacerbate the problem. The Campbell mandate created a self-defeating, downward spiral. As ferry usage declines due to increased fares and now service cuts, BC Ferries’ finances worsen, necessitating still higher fares, more cuts, still less usage, and down it goes. BC Ferries’ mandate doesn’t and can’t work. Demanding that coastal residents not only pay our fair share of our provincial highway system as well as shoulder the lion’s share of the cost to connect to that system is double dipping into coastal residents pockets. High ferry costs damage our local economy, limit the contact between family and friends and treats coastal residents as second-class citizens. The mandate needs to be changed and if the current provincial government won’t change it, perhaps its time to change the government! Jef Keighley, Halfmoon Bay

Freedom of information and privacy Alice Lutes has been striped of all her committee positions. This was done “in camera” by a council and mayor that refuses to reveal any elements from the meeting. Lutes would like the reason(s) for the council’s actions published. Lutes is the only re-elected council member. Over the past year, local news media and private citizens have described how the present Sechelt council has embarked on a fruitless gambit to interfere in the running of a private business, namely the golf course. The town has lost a legal action it brought against that business. The legal interactions must have come at a very high price tag and as such should be disclosed to the public. Can someone tell me where I can find these facts? Then, on November 23, a piece ran about this same group taking actions that both silence and potentially discredit Councillor Lutes. It appears to me that they have stripped a member, with a good performance record, of most of her vehicles for continuing to provide good service to the electorate. It appears the bad performers do not want the reasons for their actions illuminated and the good performer does. (Letters continued on page 5)

Volume 10 Issue 48

The Local - Thursday, November 29, 2012 5

Letters to the Editor – Opinions (Continued from page 4) For the mayor and to suggest that he is following the law by keeping elements of the in camera meeting undisclosed, is just not right. After all, whose freedom of information and privacy is he protecting with his silence? Since Lutes is calling for full disclosure, he is certainly not ascribing to the spirit of the act. Which in this case would have the mayor be silent to protect Lutes and her privacy. As such, it appears he is using the Act to keep his own actions and motivations hidden. I join Lutes in a demand to have all of the in-camera meeting minutes, pertaining to the matter of Lutes’ committee removals, published immediately. Peggy Malcolm, Halfmoon Bay

Taking responsibility for our collective action After reading the interview with Patrick Moore about how logging will save the world (Sunshine Coast Community Builders’ Building the Coast

Magazine, Fall 2012 edition), I was compelled to attend the SCCB’s inaugural Provoc-a-talks event. Patrick Moore promotes himself professionally as a co-founder of Greenpeace, yet Mr. Moore condemns Greenpeace and environmentalists in general, using false assertions, like “Greenpeace is basically opposing the use of wood.” Mr. Moore makes his living claiming that destructive resource extraction practices are not so bad, because there are worse habitat destroying elements on earth, such as forest fires and volcanic eruptions, and that humans need not fuss because the earth will take care of itself. Hiring so-called experts to say whatever suits the corporate economic bottom line (aka greenwashing) is generally accepted corporate policy these days, and it’s important to note that Mr. Moore does work with groups like the Canadian Associa-

tion of Petroleum Producers and Monsanto. What I find troubling is that this information was brought to us by the Coast Builders and sponsored by the Sunshine Coast Community Forest while the community’s cries for input into what happens in the Wilson Creek Watershed appears to fall on deaf ears. Forests with old growth trees seem to have an inherent social, cultural, and educational value far greater than the economic value for this community. The trees stand in the community forest, not the corporate forest after all. Instead of polarizing logging issues, I ask the SCCF to engage in a conversation with the community as a whole and work toward a common goal. We need to build bridges, not widen the gaps. We need to move beyond denial to take responsibility for our collective actions. Suazanne Senger, Sunshine Coast

Something totally phenomenal! Stargazing Unless you’ve been hiding under a moon rock, you’ve probably heard most of the end of the world theories attributed to the end of the Mayan calendar on December 21, 2012. Contrary to what you may have heard, the Mayans made no such end of the world predictions. Their Long Count calendar ends, but more like ours does on December 31 or at the end of a millennium as it did in 2000. Let’s look at the bad astronomy of some of the phenomena that will cause the end of the world as we know it. 1. The planets of our solar system will be in alignment. This is wrong. In spite of various alignments occurring in 1964, 1982 and 2000, the world didn’t end because the effects of such phenomena are of no consequence. On December 21, the planets will be scattered around the solar system and scientists don’t expect any major alignments in the next few decades. 2. The rogue planet Niburu will roar toward earth and flip the Earth’s axis reversing its rotation. This is also wrong. Unless it was deploying a Star Trek like

shield, it would be visible long ago. 3. The sun will align with the black hole at the centre of Milky Way Galaxy. Actually this is true. It will align with the black hole, but this happens every year at the Winter Solstice and we have lived to tell the tale each time. As December 21 marks the end of Baktun 13, the completion of a 5125 year cycle in the Maya calendar as it clicks over to a new one, some contemporary Mayans are predicting something totally phenomenal; harmony and balance between mankind and nature. Or, at least a good party! www.2012hoax.org http:// www.nasa.gov/topics/earth/ features/2012.html

The past several weeks may have been pretty tough. Although a longer cycle requiring that you ‘pay your dues’ somehow will continue, at least a period of reprieve has begun and will unfold until year’s end anyway. Use this opening to reach out to make meaningful connections and increase your confidences. Scorpio (Oct 22 – Nov 21) The past few weeks have seen you take a much more assertive approach than you probably have for some time. With this momentum you are now in a process of building upon new foundations. Deciphering what is important and wise and how to best nurture a healthy approach and still achieve effective outcomes is your next major step. Sagittarius (Nov 21 – Dec 21) While much is giving way and changing within, you are also feeling inspired to take some key initiatives without. With your ambitions on the rise to create a whole new foundation in your life, now is the time to focus and persevere. How things used to be is dissolving steadily now and your overall lifestyle is implied. Embrace the darkness to discern what is important. Capricorn (Dec 21 – Jan 19) While paying attention to the facts can be important and valuable, getting lost in the details can be a problem. Too much thinking and not enough awareness is the issue – losing sight of the forest for the trees. This is a good time to step back, broaden your scope and release the tensions built up by having too much on your mind. Aquarius (Jan 19 – Feb 19) Freedom is a state most people desire. Yet, it is more seldom appreciated that freedom cannot be realized without discipline. This is an important lesson for you now. Discipline implies a clear focus, realistic strategy and consistent follow through. Along the way resistance and/or blocks are encountered. Sometimes these come from within and must be overcome, like now. Pisces (Feb 19 – Mar 20) The time has come to make your presence known. Your willingness and determination to be seen and heard will produce positive results. In order to build your confidences you will have to give more, to make extra efforts than usual. Deciphering how to break through lines of resistance or simple lack of recognition is the greater, long-term task.

Astrologer comes to Coast

El Castillo; possibly a temple to the Mayan rain god, Chaac.

M

ichael O’Connor is a full-time professional Astrologer/Numerologist who writes our weekly horoscope. He is coming to the Sunshine Coast and will be offering in-person readings for all those interested. Michael has 30 years experience in the field and brings a wealth of knowledge and insight to each person he meets. All reading sessions are recorded for you and include charts and extra self-help material specifically selected to meet the client’s needs. He is very excited about his upcoming visit to the

Sunshine Coast, and recounts living here and loving the people and the community. Michael is also offering a double feature visual presentation. The presentation occurs on Saturday December 1 from 7 - 9:30 pm at Yoga By the Sea in Robert’s Creek. The first presentation is Astrology and the Intelligent Design of Nature. Michael will illustrate that between the staunchly opposed positions of religion and science regarding the nature or existence, astrology and the metaphysical and holistic paradigm upon which it

rests is largely overlooked. It will also offer valuable insights into how and why astrology works. The second presentation is Understanding Mayan Cosmology and 12-21-2012. Michael will provide an overview of Mayan cosmology and shed light on the significance of 12-21-2012 and upon the larger era 2012, a 36-42 year period in which it occurs. This now globally recognized date is just weeks away and so this is a great time to tune-in. To make an appointment: sunstarastrology@gmail. com or 1-888-352-2936
