BRIANNA L AW R E N C E Born in Sacramento, California, Brianna Lawrence is a Northern California raised Interior Architect currently working out of San Francisco. She attended the Academy of Art University from 2013 to her graduation with a BFA in 2017. As a designer, Brianna’s strengths lay in programming, color theory, and concept development. She always strives to push a concept further and nudge the known. An avid nature enthusiast, Brianna gleans much inspiration from the natural world, its inner workings, and how we are symbiant with the Earth’s life patterns. When the isn’t designing, Brianna enjoys photography and being outside with friends. The Presidio of San Francisco is a sure favorite for both hobbies and is a frequent visit when she has free time. Brianna would like to honor her family for their support and love through every victory, discouragement, and joy-filled moment alike. She would also like to thank each instructor who has shaped her into the woman and designer she is today. Notably, Katie Valkuchak, Sean Stuart, Olga Zhovreboff, and many more. Finally, Brianna would like to thank each and every friend who has been there for the whirlwind of being a twentysomething and in college, you know who you are. Thank you.

Curiosity CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT

“Inspire. Illuminate. Teach.” These are the three words National Geographic chose to identify their brand and to activate their mission. The one thing those words all have in common is human curiosity. Merriam-Webster defines curiosity as:

CURIOSITY (noun): 1 the desire to learn or know more about something or someone 2 something that is interesting because it is unusual

This desire to learn and know are key catalysts that provide a need for National Geographic’s services. Curiosity leads to the discovery of new plant species, the realization of life outside of Earth, an awareness of a dying breed, and even a call to action to help those who may not have the means to do so themselves. In every situation that National Geographic has been a part of, the beginning started with a desire to learn more, do more, and bring awareness to something that someone was passionate about. Now how does that translate to National Geographic’s west coast headquarters? Big picture, it means the public areas should inspire a sense of awe and offer opportunities for learning new things. A place where anyone at any point in their life is stimulated to learn and/or teach. Where there are hierarchies of space for different demographics to be targeted and a wide offering of topics. The office space on the second level should be inspiring, a place where work can be showcased, new and up-and-coming projects can be teased, and employees who might normally be spending 90% of their time outdoors can feel comfortable and inspired. On a smaller scale those ideas might mean having little nooks all around the first level for children to play in and learn in ways specific to them. Or having the flexibility to change the space around for events catering to a more specific audience on occasion. It might even mean a large aquarium in the middle of the building with a staircase that winds around it. The idea is to inspire curiosity in this space so that the guests leave yearning for more of what the west coast has to offer.

natural, bright, inviting, warm & cultivating

The main focus of the first level is the exhibition space and the content displayed there. Therefore the color pallet is slightly muted and light to only complement the content rather than show it up. Brass accents throughout the space create a little sparkle that surprises the eye and creates joy in the viewer. The goal is to support the content in the displays. This is executed through the use of light pink in the restrooms, accent tiling in the cafe space, furniture choices, and even in the lighting. While most of the first level will be a very light grey color with only the furniture providing color. The store space will have the most color with the emerald POS counter and brass display tables and hardware. The cafe will also feature pink in the ceiling feature and brass furniture. If there is a display nearby there will consequently not be a large saturation of color in that area and vice versa.

L

2

bold, high-end, sleek, modern, yet soft & inviting

One of the first rules of color is that contrast provides diversity and is key for a bold statement. Complementary colors are high in contrast which is what drove the decision to use emerald and dusty rose as the two main colors for the second level offices. This contrast of color also provides an opportunity for mystery and curiosity. These colors will be used mainly as accents and pops of color where interest or attention is needed, with most of the space in a light grey. For example, the window seat with its warm wood frame lined in gold plates and the emerald seat cushion contrasts with the pink tonal pillows. Or the pastel pink bathrooms with brass fixtures. The emerald break room cabinets, brass hardware, and Calacatta Gold counters all help accent the space while still providing an inviting workspace. The color remains secondary, and the contrast in tone and color conveys an upscale space.

To further my concept, this dashed line shows where the conference room from the second level drops down two feet into the first to show the guests that is something going on upstairs that they can’t fully see, just shadows through a material that is similar to frosted glass.

These egg shaped chairs actually hang from the ceiling and provide a fun, mobile seating option. They are a commercial grade rattan-like resin that is durable while still providing the look and feel of handknotted rattan.

These display tables are suspended from the floor to the ceiling, each at different levels and in different sizes which provide interest while still showcasing the product well.

4 5 6

Large aquarium runs from the first floor to the second with the mechanical base in the basement. Guests can walk around the tank on the stairs that lead up to a landing 7’ 6 AFF. They can also see a little into the second level through a small area of glass that runs along the seam between the floors.

These display cases are versatile in the sense that they are created for any form of exhibition. Doublewalled glass encloses sculptures and artifacts while also converts to a photo print showcase with the prints sandwiched between the two panels of glass. They can also be moved around the space as needed.

The things displayed around this column will hold a special significance as guests will be drawn to this moving display space. The two outer circles are two rotating platforms that are flush with the flooring to provide access to all. There is seating provided or room for standing.

This is a window seat in the shape of NetGeo’s logo turned on its side. It pops out as a frame for the window and also features a seat for “bay watching”. It can also provide an additional small meeting area.

These moving presentation walls curve at the ceiling for the employees to co-work on projects as well as present. They can tape up print-outs, use whiteboard markers or chalk markers to sketch out layout ideas, the possibilities are endless!

The Large Conference Room is one of the more obvious motifs that reflect the concept of curiosity. The entire room drops down into the cafe space below. There is semi-opaque glass that allows exhibit guests to see that there are things and people in the dropped room, but not make out details.

4 5 6

The repetition of the presentation walls here keeps the space the same for this group of desks as well as providing privacy between the kitchen and those still working. It functions as a visual and auditory barrier in addition to its original purpose of a presentation and idea wall.

Here is a break in the upper level from working surfaces. The glass bench that rounds the aquarium as it rises from the first level lobby is a stopping and resting point. It is a place for guests to sit after entering the space and a small taste of what the company has to offer.

These bathrooms were designed with an oasis in mind. They are a place for the employees to take time for themselves in the lull between morning activities and beginning work. For guests, the luxurious amenities strengthen NatGeo’s position and prestige.

Community CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT

Tony Riviera, the owner and operator of Fox & Hound Market, comes from an Italian family and has transformed his passion for organic and clean food into a brand of restaurants and high end grocery stores. This Market is special to him because he wants to plant roots and invest in peoples’ emotional health in addition to their physical health. His vision is to achieve this through a space that is simultaneously specialty market, cafe, and prepared foods.

COMMUNITY (noun): a feeling of fellowship with others, as a result of sharing common attitudes, interests, and goals 2 the people of a district or country considered collectively, especially in the context of social values and responsibilities 1

With this concept in mind, the name: Fox & Hound Market tells a story of two animals who in any other context are naturally at odds, but in the context of their community, they are put together as friends. This serves as the launching point for the concepts by area: Market - Beauty Through Variety: Utilizing materials and finishes to provide contrast and interest. Prepared Foods - Harmony: Introduce symmetry and calming colors to achieve harmony. Cafe - Connection: The Latin root of the word is communis which means: shared by all or many. This is at the heart of what Mr. Riviera believes in. Through the use of repeated motifs, transitional surfaces and modern takes on classic Italian design, this space will be one where the guests feel like a community. The transitions between spaces will seamlessly guide the guests through the zones and allow for gathering, or connection, spots. The flow of the space itself will encourage points of gathering for the guests to conversate and catch up with eachother. Through the use of complimentary slate and bronze textures, patterns, and finishes, a warm and inviting atmosphere will usher guests in. Intersecting and dynamic lines pull the space together to create a modern, yet classic atmosphere inspired by classic Italian design.

036 | B r i a n n a L a w r e n c e

B r i a n n a L a w r e n c e | 037

Finishes natural, raw & harmonic

The same palette of colors and materials are used throughout the entire space to keep a continuous flow and connect each of the individual spaces together. The mixture of cool, calming greys and the warmth of natural wood and the mixed concrete creates a sort of harmony while providing contrast to a mainly neutral palette. The variety of texture in the materials also add contrast and interest and in most cases, invite the clients to interact with them. All of this working toward the ultimate goal of bringing people together in the space. Since Mr. Riviera is Italian and wants his roots to be evident in his enterprise, the warm yellow stucco walls and marble-like concrete mixture add that classic Italian touch in a more modern context while still retaining the timelessness of the culture. The raw quality of the materials and the exposed nature of the architecture work together to create a sense of honesty and openness which is crucial to the fastidious unity of a community.

THE SITE IS‌ 13 Wood Street, San Francisco, CA 94118. Built in 1955, this tri-story home was built for the Mariotto Family following their move from Italy to the city. They wanted a place the whole family could grow up in and launch into the world from. Originally built for one large family, it was only recently split into three separate apartments. There are two central stairs and a three car garage with storage. The garden level is a sort of in-laws quarters with access to a back patio area. The upper two levels are currently identical two bedroom, two bath apartments with interior stair access. The current residents are a brother who is a professor at the Academy of Art University, his sister and her husband who run the family business out of the building, and their niece who is a young professional.

Aloha Āina CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT

The occupant of this level is the twenty-something niece of the professor. She is an outgoing, nature-loving young professional who works in the City and surfs its waves in the meantime. This is her first job in the City and consequently her first home in the City. The concept expresses that while encompassing her lifestyle.

Aloha Āina (noun): 1 2

Aloha: love, respect, honor Āina: land, lit., “that which nourishes”

Aloha āina brings an understanding and perspective that shapes everything we do. Its spirit and essence begin with lōkahi, or the sense of being connected to all things. This reverence for the land and the foundation it lays for a person’s life is one that I felt strongly in speaking with the niece. To bring this feeling into her new home the floor plan will remain open and inviting with objects rather than stationary walls dividing and defining spaces. Plants and natural, raw materials bring the outdoors in while big, bright windows usher in natural light. Living as one with the land can mean many things, in this context it is seen as a light touch of color and light paired with sustainable materials and finishes. A more literal aspect being the surfboard storage behind the bed used as a headboard. The huge sliding doors to the patio can be left open to usher in light and fresh air through the whole space, even creating a cross-breeze if necessary.

Crystalline CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT

The Professor lives on this level and is very specific about his needs for the space. He wants zero clutter with a gallery-like atmosphere. With that in mind, clear crystals came to mind with their sharp edges, clean look, and elevated connotation.

Crystalline (adjective): 1 2

having the structure and form of a crystal very clear

Rather than literally putting glass everywhere and creating a disco ball, the design elements are influenced by the structure and form of the crystal. This means minimal decoration, non-symmetrical views, an austere atmosphere, and a generally minimalist design. There is also a general transparency in the space through the use of an open plan, frosted glass doors, and light furniture. The geometric structure of a cut crystal is evident in small-scale elements such as lighting, hardware, and pattern. Since the Professor requested a gallery-like atmosphere, most of the furnishings double as art and are extremely sculptural. The finishes and materials used are rich in texture and color without cluttering the space with smaller pieces of art or decoration. The furniture becomes the art in the home making it’s use clear and welcoming.

Trustworthy CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT

This level houses the Professor’s sister and brother-in-law who run the family business out of their home. They need a space that is conducive to a good working environment as well as client meetings but still feels like a home. The main theme that came up in the beginning stages of design was how they wanted their clients to walk into their home and feel like they could be trusted. As a result, that became the concept for the whole space.

Trustworthy (adjective): 1 2

able to be relied on as honest or truthful balance, justice

It was here that a fun balance was birthed between the more literal definition of the balance of scales to maintain justice and the design psychology of creating a trustworthy and safe environment. Visually, sharp lines are indicative of a forward-moving system and paired with soft textures create a sense of living comfortable in a well-ordered world. The use of the golden ratio helps keep the eye moving in pleasurable spirals and creates a feeling of wholeness. Many of the fixtures and hardware show a visual and literal balance such as the sconces in the bedrooms, the spatial symmetry of each area’s layout, and even the bathroom tile with its three sectioned hex tiles. The color psychology was influential here as well. After extensive research, greens and blues became the most obvious option as a trust-building atmosphere. The use of rich blues and greens create a feeling of trust in the system and convey the importance and weigh of he decisions made here.
