Hello
This portfolio is a representation of my progress throughout four years in the Interior Design program at Arizona State University, as well as a strong passion for architecture, graphic design, landscape architecture, and art.
Growing up in a small town in Wyoming I learned a great appreciation for the beauty of nature, a hard working attitude, and an eagerness to see the world and learn new things. Three words to describe myself would be adventurous, passionate, and ambitious. I am an avid outdoors enthusiast and spend my free time hiking, kayaking, skiing, camping, and traveling. I find I am most inspired when I am immersed in nature and this connection has made me believe the relationship between a building and its surroundings is key to good design. My passion for design is not limited to interiors, I am passionate about architecture, graphic design, landscape design, sketching, building, and anything that gets my creative mind ticking. I believe having a strong ambition is key to achieving my short and long term goals and I’m excited to begin my journey after design school!

Etienne Aigner is a women’s retail company founded in 1950 that is known for being traditional and high quality. Our mission was to brand the company into a modern men’s retail store. The scope was the transformation of a historic warehouse in downtown Phoenix and the re-branding of
the first men’s retail store. The challenge we faced was to create harmony between the existing building, a new retail store, and the traditions of the Etienne brand. Reusing this historic warehouse pays homage to the traditions of the brand and is adapted into an edgy and modern store.

This incredible brick building is the oldest remaining warehouse in Phoenix built by the Sturges Brothers in 1909. It later became the Phoenix Seed & Feed Capitol Warehouse in 1919 and then lastly the Arizona Paper Box Company in 1946. The warehouse has been vacant for years but protected under the state as it was listed on the State & National Registry of Historic Places in 1984. The structure consists of two 50’ wide by 138’ long bays with an Arizona brick shell
and wood trusses and beams for support. Our scope was the No. 2 bay on the East side of the lot closest to parking. To begin, historic preservation research was done in order to understand the guidelines and rules. In order to not harm the building itself with the retail remodel, I chose to insert, layer, and weave new construction within the existing. The final result is a unity between decay and new life.

The challenge. The challenge was to create a modern and traditional clothing store that rejuvenates and draws visitors to the heart of Phoenix’s historical warehouse district. By using a series of architectural extrusions oriented towards paths of travel, this abandoned building will transform into a sophisticated retail store without harming its historic integrity.

The entrance was the most important part of the concept because the goal was to attract customers without harming the original structure. Inspiration was found using the case study 25Lusk in San Francisco that wove a stair through an existing hole in the wall. In this design no punctures were made to the facade, instead both entrances were reused by adding extruding architectural elements to catch attention. New materials are layered with the palimpsest of the original structure.

To further direct customers into the space using two perpendicular walls, a joining glass tunnel was created to create a single entry into the store. Through brainstorming and sketching a series of angles were created to best capture people from the street and take them inside. The exterior consists of angled black steel canopies that evolves into transparent glass in the exterior. The design intent of transforming the tunnel into glass was to create an
interior window display. This differs from traditional retail stores because the goal was to limit changes to the facade and to spark interest of customers and get them into the space. Once the two entry points are joined into one, complimentary angles are mimicked in the flooring material and mezzanine to guide you through the store. The stair mindfully mimics the other angles of the architecture but floats from the wall and mezzanine creating a focal point.

the s o lut io n . The intent of this project was to design a modern retail store in a historical and decaying warehouse. Research and creating a branding concept was important to create a story for customers. Etienne Aigner’s heritage was embraced by implementing quality and sophistication as well as incorporating similar materials that can be found in their merchandise. New materials and shape were used to contrast the traditional side of the brand. The space
14
consists of a focal point entry, a retail space, dressing rooms, restrooms, checkout, back of house for employees, and a multi use mezzanine space for events. Computer modeled perspectives were created to understand color, materials, and concepts. A physical model was constructed to understand spacial relations and architectural details. The darker material represents new architecture and the lighter material is the existing shell.

k i t of parts. Part of the scope of work was to design a custom kit of parts for the displays. The displays were supposed to reflect the brand as well as be able to adapt to any of the Etienne Aigner retail stores. Continuing with the concept of weaving old and new, a system of brass rods running through polished wood created custom shelves and hanging displays. The system can easily change according to the stores needs and merchandise. The simple rectilinear configurations creates an organized floor plan and system of displays.

The Tempe Circuit Building was an industrial warehouse for many years before a developer bought it to renovate the shell in hopes to appeal to start-up companies. Our scope of work was to create a co-work place between two companies with one half of the building. Flower Bar and Savidge
Photography are two separate companies that want to share a workplace to promote collaboration and an open work environment. Creating a concept stemming from the benefits of nature in the work place, we created an office environment that stimulates creativity and collaboration.

The existing nearly 200,000 sf warehouse was built in the 1980’s used as an electronic factory. The warehouse was recently purchased by a developing company to rehabilitate the shell to appeal to start up companies in the growing town of Tempe, Arizona. The Circuit Tempe, as it has been named, has been transformed into a modern workplace with fun exterior spaces and a central lobby and restroom facility. The lot is in close proximity to the 101 Freeway with
over 750 parking spaces for employees and guests. It’s location is in close proximity to Tempe Market Place for shopping and food as well as Arizona State University to attract potential graduates. Our scope of work was 90,000 sf located in the West side of the existing warehouse. The biggest goal of this project was to not only create a working environment but a space for clients and the community to come together and collaborate and network.

T h e challenge. The challenge was to create a co-working space that implements collaboration and creativity between two separate companies. The greatest challenge is dividing a large space into private v. community areas. By bringing nature into the workplace it will stimulate employees and create an exciting and inspiring place to work. 19

blending of two offices. The biggest challenge while space planning was combining both companies needs into one large warehouse. Since both clients had many needs, it was necessary to create more square footage. Evolving our concept we created a tree loft idea that gave creative work spaces to each client on a second floor mezzanine. While both clients believe in collaboration, it was important to divide private spaces and sharing spaces. To spatially organize the floor plan we divided the building into quadrants. On the West side is Savidge Photography and the East is Flower Bar. The North section is dedicated to admin and offices while the South section is dedicated to the design and creative spaces.

Since the existing warehouse is very open with a single height exposed ceiling, we really wanted to convey our concept through the ceiling. We designed a custom wood ceiling that has a geometric crossing affect inspired by the shapes and patterns trees cast on the ground below. This custom ceiling spanned from above each mezzanine out above the offices, into the exterior additions and down the facade of the additions. From the exterior this captures people and carries them through the space. Skylights were added to create natural lighting to enhance productivity. Wood slat ceilings were added to offices and below the mezzanine to give an intimate feel.

Devel oping the Concept. With our concept “Beneath the Canopy we wanted to focus on the shape, shadow, texture, and colors found in nature and the forest. One of our concerns was the view from up on the mezzanines looking down on the work area. We designed a system of roofs for the offices with angles and pitches that are a geometric reference to the shapes and lines on leaves. The color acts as way-finding as it turns from dark green, brown, white, and finally to light green similarly to leaves during the seasons.

Deve l o p i n g t h e C o n c e p t . We chose to create mezzanines to add space to the building to create levels and a creative “tree house for our clients. Below the mezzanine are private work areas a long with the central path that gives the feeling of walking through a forest. Both clients have their own dedicated mezzanine with bridges that connect to the central collaborative mezzanine. Providing the clients with their own space on the mezzanine allows creativity and peace.

We wanted to create an open corridor that extends from the exterior of the building to the opposite end that acts as a divider between the admin offices and the design work areas. Not only is the path for travel but it’s purpose is to emphasize collaboration and interaction. We designed custom built planters with low maintenance plants that are easily re-arranged. This gives employees and clients a place to sit and work close to nature.

One of our “big ideas from our beneath the canopy concept was a central walking path that gives the effect of walking through a forest. Tall ceilings and natural sky lights transition to more intimate spaces below the mezzanines. The custom garden planters begin in the exterior gallery and lead you through the space that ends at a cafe living green wall. Corrugated bridges between the mezzanines cast shadows on the ground below, similar to a tree canopy.

The warehouse district in downtown Phoenix has been abandoned and neglected for years. Our goal is to bring life into the neighborhood by creating a multipurpose area that is exciting, functional, safe and attracts surrounding communities. The scope was a new built community
library, an outdoor amphitheater, and renovation to the bridge and pathways that lead into the neighborhood. Our concept derives from Phoenix’s deep history rooted in the winding canal systems that brought life to the valley making it a place for growth, development, and civilization.

The site is a vacant lot just South of the Railroad tracks which separates the lively downtown scene from the abandoned historic warehouse district of Phoenix. Central Avenue is the main road that connects the two areas but is rarely used because of it’s poor design. The road and a small sidewalk goes beneath a system of bridges that support the railroad tracks above. Underneath the bridges lack lighting and safety as it is home to the homeless
and garbage. Part of the scope of work is to propose a re-design for the Central Ave bridge to encourage people to travel into the area. The building site is an open dirt lot with no landscaping but adjacent to a popular restaurant called The Duce. We were provided a building shell design and our mission was to create a community center and library. Finally, we were given the challenge of creating an outdoor community amphitheater in the back of the library.

Our concept derives from Phoenix’s deep history rooted in the winding canal systems that brought life to the valley making it a place for growth, development, and civilization. Our goal is to bring life into the warehouse district by creating a multi purpose area that is exciting, functional, safe and attracts the surrounding communities. the bridge acts as the canal system allowing safer and more accesible entry from lively downtown Phoenix and rejuvanating the historic warehouse
neighborhoods. To incorporate our concept of a canal system we developed a branding scheme for the library and surrounding area called The Arroyo District. The Spanish population is very high in this area of Phoenix so we created the name Arroyo which is the Spanish term for a canal bed. With our branding we translated the concept into our design with materials and architectural details. Our material palette consists of natural and sustainable materials that are similar to Arizona’s
natural landscape. We chose to keep our floor plan very simple and linear for accessibility and to make way-finding easier. We create fluidity in our materials, way-finding and our open floor plan. There are changes in ceiling height and walls that create powerful moments that are more intimate and enclosed and then some that are open similar to the winding canyons carved into Arizona’s landscape. The result is a modern library that enforces collaboration and an exciting place to learn.

The existing conditions lacked safe sidewalks and a connection to nature. Our goal was to create an amphitheater park for the community to enjoy as well as bike paths, safe side walks, and landscaping. This beautiful 1950’s style ranch home in one of Scottsdale’s historic residential neighborhoods was designed by the infamous Ralph Haver. The goal for this project was keeping the historic integrity of the exterior of the house and renovating the interior to fit the needs of the client. The
client is a couple with no children who love to entertain, relax, and occasionally work from home. With inspiration from the Eames home in California and an emphasis on shape and sustainability, their home will become a place for entertaining for years to come.

Hist o r i c p r e s e r vat i o n . The architect of this ranch style home, Ralph Haver, was an architect that practiced in the Phoenix metropolitan area from 1945 to the 1980’s. Haver’s main pursuit was to create comfortable family homes with good design and function. Haver homes were affordable tract homes that were very modern and clean living in the mid century era. The clients wanted to create a home for entertaining with a close connection to nature similar to the Eames home in Palisades, CA. Similar design features to the Eames home were implemented in the client’s design as well as an emphasis on sustainability, nature and shape. (30)

The clients wanted a space for entertaining work and privacy. The open space plan and formal entry addition create a warm place for friends and family. A small office and private backyard studio allow the owners to work from home. A private hallway separates the entertaining space from the bedrooms for a quiet place to escape.
