BRIANNA RAYA SELECTED WORKS
HELLO! MY NAME IS BRIANNA RAYA. This portfolio is a compilation of selected works form my academic years at Arizona State University as well as some mix media. The architectural and design approaches within the projects focus on adaption human behavior and scale while providing a memorable experience throughout the spaces. I believe design can be powerful in telling a story through experiences while effectively providing functionality and livability in a space. I take great pride in the work I create and am constantly inspired by music, pop culture, fashion, art, books and even food. Inspiration and design can be found anywhere and I believe as long as we view things at all perspectives we can find beauty and art to design our future.

SURROUNDING CONTEXT
Mesa | Arizona | Spring 2018
The building specified for this project is historically protected as the city of Mesa’s first U.S. postal service building located on the southwest corner of MacDonald and Pepper Place. It was first built in 1937 and over the years it has seen many additions and renovations and now stands as Mesa’s Natural Museum’s storage unit. The City hopes to bring it back to life for recreational and community use but also have the challenge in finding a way to house historical neon signs. This proposed project, finds a new way to incorporate these signs in an indirect museum-like manner with the integration of a communal space that is flexible in its programing In colaboration with: Jeannie Nguyen, Miranda Garcia, Emma Phillips, Cecilia Flores

CONCEPT The Post is a play on words that embodies the once “post Office” that lived in the Federal Building. The idea of Neon signs being a marker or way-finding tool has since merged with the modern idea of being a “Picture Spot” to post online. Her the community will come together and form connections through education, recreation and events to create a unique experience for people of all ages. The Post encourages diversity, creativity, growth and celebration through the incorporation of what was once considered an endangered craft, neon signs. The Post pays respect to its history by staying true to its historic materials. Interior metal beams extrude through the building to create a new framing facade . While preserving the east facade and changing the main entry to the west, we have created a community connection with the surrounding businesses.

OFS Brands has come a long way since its founding back in 1937. What makes this company so unique from its competitors is their 80-year legacy, a legacy of being family owned, with a family culture and a family story. The idea of family is where the concept for the design lies within an idea of celebrating the family culture OFS has by starting at its roots, the beginning of the legacy, and branching out from where they are today to another 80 years to their family. Tempe | Arizona | Spring 2017
Positioned on the northwest corner of Price Rd and Broadway and uniquely located with a close proximity to condo and apartment complexes. Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine (SCNM) is a holistic community healthcare clinic. This design consists of a re-branding and renovation of the ground level of SCNM. This healthcare facility is used for both clinical care and education for student studying naturalistic medicine in the location. The ground level is a blend of both uses thats challenge is to show its want in displaying an emphasis on community, collaboration and the whole person. In colaboration with: Jeannie Nguyen *ASU Design Excellence Nominee
| 19 RECEPTION
CONCEPT SCNM is constructed with a central core that connects the North and South ends, that fabricate an “on and off” stage between patients, students and staff. The central core contains a middle corridor that connects the entrance, reception, waiting areas and café. It incorporates a play of natural light from windows on both North and South ends. Herbal teas are sold in the café where most are grown at the garden in SCNM to promote healing. Inspired by the new SCNM logo, abstract leaf forms were used to create the pattern of the screen walls. Based off a study of light and shadow the pattern provides patients the combination of healing comfort of natural light and the privacy needed inside. A central lounge and break room are located on the East side to accommodate for students and staff members to relax and work comfortably away from patients.

THE WOOD
AN EXPERIENCE YOU NEVER KNEW YOU NEEDED.
Phoenix | Arizona | Fall 2016
Positioned at the intersection of the thriving Grant Avenue Arts District and the Woodland Historic District in downtown Phoenix, the Zion Evangelical Church was once was a place of worship, socialization and an active community hub. Today the new owner, a devotee of the arts, dreams of adapting the building into a community-centric arts and entertainment venue. The design challenge was to re-purpose the church by protecting the historic character of the building while creating a new atmosphere and venue for the arts community and surrounding neighborhood. The original church structure was an austere rectangular building constructed in 1918 followed by the sanctuary addition in 1938. The second addition included a multipurpose room, kitchen, restrooms and office, which were added in 1959. *ASU Design Excellence Winner

CONCEPT THE WOOD is a place for the diverse neighborhood groups to gather and celebrate community, art, and music. In order to retain the original identity of the church, the Holy Trinity was the core inspiration. Playing with the powers of three, triangles, facets, and triplets become the subtle motif of the design. Designed to spark curiosity, custom screens and contrasting palettes provide the user a preview into adjacent spaces. Even the basement holds interest as it invites users down into the space below. THE WOOD helps unify a single community that enjoys food, music, art and experience.

The District’s Unusual Interiors Tempe | Arizona | Spring 2016 This project was an Interior Landscape design of ASU’s Design School’s “Dead Square” space. This included an outdoor courtyard, also know as dead square by the students, Charlie’s Cafe original location and the balcony located in north design building. This space has the opportunity to evolve with the use of 2 buses each form different use: gardening/vegetation and juice shop. The placement of the two buses transforms the original space of Dead Square, Old Charlie’s and the Balcony into a new area for gathering of students and faculty. This exterior is modified in order to incorporate the new systems. In colaboration with: Jacki Vasquez

CONCEPT
A 2 level structure will focus on 3 things. One, providing a new system of agriculture in to their interiors. Two, contribute to a new restoration place for the students. And threes, a new connection from the third floor to the second level through its second level extension I which it contains the vegetation.
The core concept of this design project was to bring and grow agriculture in the interiors though the comfort of hospitality. Inspired by the Russian nesting dolls, a set of wooden dolls of decreasing size placed one inside another, the idea of an interior within an interior is placed inside the space. This is accomplished through a re-purposed bus structure. The approach is to bring the agriculture though the mobility of an interior while still providing the comfort that hospitality provides to the user. The overall context is using exterior objects that have been molded to fit into an interior space creating an interior in an interior.

The graphics are flyer’s designed for promoting events hosted by Alpha Rho Chi, front cover for a soon to be published poetry book and a psychadelic graphic collage art print. Both sketches and photography show moments depicting the world through different perspectives in different mediums. Logo design was also touched on with Work + Play, a conceptual business design of a co-working space that gears towards the target audience of start up design firm owners and designers that also need to balance work-life with kids as the play and they work. Included are also snapshots of community outreach projects: Quadrat and Light for Hope. Quadrat is a project focusing of up-cycling discontinued textiles and give them a new purpose and a hanging art piece. Light for Hope encouraged students to create their own personal light that will be auctioned off and all the proceeds will be donated to Free Arts AZ Organization, a local non profit organization.
