The Wood 911 W. Woodland Avenue, Phoenix, Arizona The project was focused on an existing site, located in downtown Phoenix. Lying at the head of the thriving Grant Avenue Arts District and at the edge of the Woodland Historic District. The building, Zion Evangelical Church, once was a place of worship, socialization and served as a community hub. Now the new owner, a devotee of the arts, plans on creating an arts and entertainment venue for large and small gatherings. The design challenge here was to re-purpose the cherished historical building by linking the value of the historic remnants of the building with those of the art community and connecting it to the current neighborhood. The building was built in 3 phases, the first being the original portion of the building in 1918. The second phase, which was the addition of the sanctuary, was created in 1938. The 3rd and final addition was the multipurpose area, built in 1959. CONCEPT: The Wood is a place of gathering for all the diverse communities of the area: local, art, music, etc. In order to retain the identity of the church, the idea of the holy trinity was the core inspiration of the design creating the concept of the power of three. The space is designed to spark curiosity into the user. Each space has a preview into the adjacent room. Even the basement holds an interest as it lures one down into the space below. The Wood creates a single community that enjoys food, music, art and experience.

The creation of the simple triangular motif was influenced by the irregularity of the triangle shapes seen within the trusses. Each repeated motif is rotated at 90 degrees, in which creates a unified pattern that makes up the screen walls between the retail and venue 1 space.

The District’s Unusual Interiors 810 S Forest Mall Tempe, AZ Worked With: Jackelyn Vasquez

This project was an Interior Landscape design of ASU’s Design School’s “Dead Square” space. This included an outdoor courtyard, also know as dead square by the students, Charlie’s Cafe original location and the balcony located in north design building. The core concept of this design project was to bring and grow agriculture in the interiors though the comfort of hospitality. Inspired by the Russian nesting dolls, a set of wooden dolls of decreasing size placed one inside another, the idea of an interior within an interior is placed inside the space. This is accomplished through a re-purposed bus structure. The approach is to bring the agriculture though the mobility of an interior while still providing the comfort that hospitality provides to the user. This space has the opportunity to evolve with the use of 2 buses each form different use: gardening/vegetation and juice shop. The placement of the two buses transforms the original space of Dead Square, Old Charlie’s and the Balcony into a new area for gathering of students and faculty. This exterior is modified in order to incorporate the new systems. The system of the buses reflects on to the floor allowing stained concrete to mimic the outline of the various positions the buses can explore. The pattern directs the layout of the overall space and its use. The overall context is using exterior objects that have been molded to fit into an interior space creating an interior in an interior.
