Shopping for your vacation

Shopping for your everyday outfits and shopping for travel are two very different things. Shopping for travel requires a different mindset and process.

Creating the perfect trav el wardrobe doesn’t have to cost a fortune. In fact, there are many times where you can shop your own closet and have everything you need.

Here is how you can shop for your vacation:

1. Clean out your closet. Find as many pieces as possible you think would work on your trip.

Ask yourself these questions when you are figuring out what to wear:

- Does it work in different settings?

- Can I use it on more than one occasion?

- Is it good quality?

- Will it take up a lot of space in my bag?

- Will this take ages to dry?

- Does it mix and match with the other travel clothing I’ve select ed?

2. Plan a budget! Do you have money to buy clothing or gear for your trip or will you shop in your own closet?

3. Mark down what you have and what you need to buy. Stick to your budget! Have fun!

4. Before you go shopping, make a list of any items you weren’t able to find in your closet. Refer to the list of favorite retailers you created earlier in the course and go shopping! You can find a listing of recommended retailers on Travel Fashion Girl’s Best Online Shopping Sites directory.

5. Always keep receipts and don’t remove tags until you fi nalize your travel wardrobe.

6. On Amazon, you can some times find lower prices than other retailers, and you can read tons of feedback and oth er buyers’ reviews. Plus, as a Prime member, you get free 1-2 day shipping and sometimes free returns, making the online shopping process much faster.

At Nordstrom you get a wide breadth of selection from decent brands and quality too.

7. Shop off season! Shopping after summer and winter are great because you can get great deals on clothing that would be per fect for your next vacation.

8. Sign up for newsletters from your favorite retailers to get up dates on their latest sales.

9. Find out if the retailer has an outlet. Many popular stores have online outlets. Sometimes they car ry merchandise at a fraction of the cost as the current price in the reg ular store.

10. Buy items like luggage, backpacks, and electronics during hol iday sales.

11. At some stores, you might find an excellent winter coat with a bargain basement price tag or a cute handbag that would add a hint of vintage appeal to your outfits. Buyer beware – make sure it’s in good condition, because the last thing you want is your suitcase falling apart in the middle of your trip.

12. Head over to your nearest discount retailer to look for clothes for your vacation.

16

A chain of 26 atolls and more than 1,000 islands in the Indian Ocean, the Republic of Maldives is one of the most sought-after tropical destina tions in the world. It’s dense with mega watt luxury villas and overwater bungalows, and the div ing is unreal (though, sadly, some of the coral has been threat ened by bleaching).

Still, there’s a dive for all skill levels at Ari Atoll, where you can swim with rays and, deeper down, reef sharks. Pro tip: the number one resort in the In dian Ocean (per this year’s reader survey), has 59 luxe villas— some with private pools, all with private butlers. Marquesas Islands, French Polynesia

20

The Marquesas are one of the most remote island groups on Earth. Anchored in the Pacific nearly 1,000 miles northeast of Ta hiti, the very fact of these islands’ remote location is what has long captured travelers’ imaginations.

The islands had banner moments in the 20th century for famous residents fleeing. Today, in spite of their breathtaking scenery and dream-like visitor experience, they attract only a trickle of vis itors, primarily intrepid adven turers from mainland Europe.

The islands are in the extreme northeast corner of French Polynesia, a semi-au tonomous territory of France. The local time is GMT-9:30, a half hour ahead of Tahiti.

French is the official language of French Polynesia. English-speaking visitors are less common in the Marque sas than other parts of French Polynesia, so some basic French can be an asset, particularly away from the hotels.

While Tahitian is widely spoken on Tahiti and in the Society Is lands, the language is mutually unintelligible with Marquesan. As visitors who have spent even a day or two on Tahiti or have traveled elsewhere in the ter ritory quickly pick up on Tahitian words, it is not uncommon for them to speak the language upon arrival in the Marque sas; local residents will kindly correct those who do, but it is good practice to learn some basic phrases before your visit.

Things to do in Marquesas Islands:

-snorkeling in Tahuata

- hiking to a waterfall in Hakaui

-popular excursion is a day trip by boat to the neigh boring island of Tahuata. -Visit Hakaui Valley

-Visit archaeological sites -On Nuku Hiva, excursions include trips to Hakaui, where a hike can be under taken to visit a waterfall, or to Taipivai, the “Typee” of Melville’s writings. Taiohae is also a pleasant village for strolling, where one is just as likely to encounter a wayward horse nibbling grass at the bus stop as a local resident stopping into a local shop or pizza joint.
