iyazaki’s Story

A talented man, Hayao Miyazaki has spent his life creating. He is a film director, producer, screenwriter, author, animator, and manga artist. As the co-founder of Studio Ghibli, one of the most acclaimed animation studios in the world, Miyazaki has produced over thirty films and has collaborated on hundreds more. Through a love of traditional art techniques and meaningful plotlines, Miyazaki is arguably one of the greatest animators and filmmakers to date.

Lived through World War II, which left a lasting impression and influenced his view of the nature of man and war

1963 Graduated from Gakushuin University Began working for Toei Animation as an in-between artist

The Journey of Shuna (1983) The Journey of Shuna tells the story of a young prince trying to save his people from famine. The manga is beautifully illustrated, filled with watercolor images hand-painted by Miyazaki.

Gun Samurai (t.b.a)

Hayao Miyazaki’s latest manga, Gun Samurai, explores the world of a Japanese Samurai during an era of battle. The manga is still being finalized by retired Miyazaki, but will likely be published in 2020.

Dining in the Air (1994)

An informative manga published in the magazine of Japanese Airlines, Dining in the Air explains the history of airplane food through fun and humorous dialog and illustrations.

Nausicaå and the Valley of the Wind (1982)

Regarded as one of the greatest mangas (and films) in Japanese history, Valley of the Wind is an intriguing tale about Princess Nasetist living in a world torn apart by war and natural disasters.

Castle in the Sky (1985)

As the basis for one of Studio Ghibli’s most successful films, Castle in the Sky shares the story of a brave young girl, Sheeta, and her friend Pazu. The manga describes their adventures as they search for a floating city, while avoiding capture by those who are also in search of it.

Ponyo (2008) An adaptation on the Little Mermaid, Ponyo is the story of a goldfish princess who is found by a young boy, Sosuke. As she spends time with him, she becomes more and more human, disrupting the balance of nature and causing Sasuke’s town to need the protection of Mother Nature herself.

Howl’s Moving Castle (2004) Howl’s Movie Castle tells the adventurous tale of Sophie, who befriends a young wizard named Howl. Through a series of events, Sophie is cursed by an evil witch, making her as an old lady; prompting Howl to find a way to rid the curse and return Sophie her youh.

Nausicaå and the Valley of the Wind (1983) Living in a post-apocalyptic world, devasted by a crumbling ecosystem, a young girl named Nausicaa must use her skills to restore peace to her planet.

My Neighbor Totoro (1993) After moving to the country to be closer to their ill mother, young sisters Satsuke and Mei befriend spirits living in their house and nearby forest.

Kiki’s Delivery Service (2002) A young witch, Kiki, moves to the seaside to strengthen her magic, but soon looses her ablities due to self-doubt. After hard work and persevarence, she soon overcomes her insecurities and regains her magic.

Spirited Away (1982) After stumbling upon an abandon amusement park, Chihiro realises its a home for the supernatural. Unable to leave, she must work to free herself and her parents from the chaos within.

Castle in the Sky (2003) After escaping captivity, orphan Sheeta meets fellow orphan Pazu; they team up to find the floating city of Laputa, while avoiding harm by those who are also in search of the lost city.

Porco Rosso (1992) A reflection of real-world events, Porco Rosso tells the story of a former World War I pilot as he prepares to battle against pirates.

Princess Mononoke (1999) A beautiful tale about the nature of man, war, and technology, Princess Mononoke tells the story of a young boy in search of a cure for his people in a land destroyed by hardships and battle.
