What Is Coaching? People often ask “what is coaching?” First and foremost it’s a collaborative, co- creative partnership that helps people get from where they are to where they want to be. The definition of coaching according to the International Coach Federation is as follows: “Coaching is partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential. Professional coaches provide an ongoing partnership designed to help clients produce fulfilling results in their personal and professional lives. Coaches help people improve their performances and enhance the quality of their lives. Coaches are trained to listen, to observe and to customize their approach to individual client needs. They seek to elicit solutions and strategies from the client; they believe the client is naturally creative and resourceful. The coach's job is to provide support to enhance the skills, resources, and creativity that the client already has.” What Coaching is not… Coaching’s methodology draws from a range of traditional professions such as therapy, consulting and mentoring YET it is not any of these. Coaching is a unique process and there are significant differences between the above listed professions. The primary function of therapy is to create a context in which healing may take place. Therapy assumes that symptoms or behavioral patterns need to be fixed, that something in the client needs to be healed. A mentor/consultant empowers and motivates a person by imparting their own personal experience, knowledge and case histories, and have a particular expertise and experience in the field in which they are supporting the individual being mentored: imparting knowledge, advice, counseling, guidance and teaching. What to expect from Coaching The first thing to understand about Coaching is all about you! Each session is tailored to your individual needs. What one person requires from this service will most likely be different from the next. However, in general, Coaching offers you...
• Greater clarity to your personal direction and goals • Guidance and options about what to do next • Improved productivity and awareness • Accountability in setting and achieving objectives and performance targets • Assistance in setting clear vision, goals and strategies for yourself • A sounding board and an active listener • Support in maintaining motivation • Assistance in achieving work life balance

What to expect from Me as Your Coach My clients are great I am fortunate to have the privilege of choosing my clients. I want to coach and enjoy coaching my clients. As a coach, my role is to assist you in enhancing your performance and “unlocking your potential” I expect from you I expect you to commit to: honesty; making yourself a priority during our coaching partnership; to respecting yourself; to achieve your goals and dreams; and to be prepared for our sessions. I make direct requests From time to time, I’ll challenge you. For example I might ask you to commit to doing something before our next call. You may say, "Yes," say "No," or offer another solution. I will support you and encourage you whichever way you respond. I give suggestions If I have some ideas and you’re open to them, I’ll make specific suggestions on how to handle a problem or situation. If I am not sure, I’ll say so. Honesty is one of my values. Regardless, use the best of what I say and use your own judgment when taking action. I don’t step over much When I hear a funny tone in your voice, or notice something amiss, I’ll ask you about it. Often it is these small moments that offer the chance to resolve something. However, I don’t confront or push; I’ll merely invite you to look at something. I give homework I often ask that the client come up with two or three goals or actions to work on between calls. If it is too much, say so. If you want more, just ask. I am here I want to hear it all. If you have a personal problem, are disturbed with something (even me or the coaching), are just starting to realize something big, or can’t wait to share a big win, call, email, or text me. Anytime.

Policies and Procedures We are voluntarily entering into a formal coaching partnership, which will benefit you, the client. Our Coaching Sessions: Our coaching sessions are 45-60 minutes and to maximize this time you’ll want to bring a written list of things to discuss or utilize the Session Prep form. It may include things like your progress on a specific goal or problems you faced and how you handled them, new skills and strategies you want to develop, direction you want on a situation etc. We will work out an agreement on number of weeks to initially meet. Sessions can take place of the phone, via Skype or in person. We will discuss all three options and determine the best for your situation. Changes: If you need to reschedule your session, please give me at least 24 hours notice. If you have an emergency, we’ll work around it. If you must cancel a call, we will make it up. There will inevitably come a time when I have to reschedule but I will also make every effort to give you 24 hours notice. Extra time: I want to be available for you should you get “stuck” or are trying to break through an issue. I’ll do my best to be available. I ask that we keep these calls to 10 to 15 minutes. An e-mail at brianpowerscoach@gmail.com is also accepted during these times. I will try to respond within 24 hours. It’s a great way to announce wins and accomplishments between sessions or a needed word of encouragement. Confidentiality: Trust is essential in building this strong partnership. I guarantee that everything you share with me will remain in complete confidence. In the case that I would like to share your information with others, I would seek written permission from you. I do reserve the right to act if I feel for your safety or those around you are in jeopardy. Problems: If the coach ever says or does anything that upsets you or doesn’t feel right, please bring it to the coach’s attention. Honesty and trust are critical in a coaching relationship. As coaches, we want to provide an open and safe place for you to come with confidence. Likewise, if your coach feels that he/she is not able to coach you effectively, or that you would be best served by services other than coaching, we will inform you of this opinion. Referrals: I love referrals! With the personal nature of this alliance, being referred is one of the greatest compliments we could receive from you. If you refer someone and they enter into a coaching agreement, you will receive a bonus session for free as our way of saying, “Thanks!”

THE POWERS COACHING MODEL by Brian Powers
Coaching Model | The POWERS Coaching Model !
What is Coaching? The International Coach Federation (ICF) defines coaching as: Partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential, which is particularly important in today’s uncertain and complex environment. Coaches honor the client as the expert in his or her life and work and believe every client is creative, resourceful and whole.
My Coaching Model The ICF definition of coaching is the basis and framework for the POWERS coaching model. Like ICF, I also consider the client the expert. A session, in its basic form, is simply a conversation between the coach and the client that takes place in a safe, open, nonjudgmental setting. The purpose of the session is to facilitate and empower the clients ability to discover perspectives that might lead to self-awareness and potential solutions. The POWERS model, as further defined below, becomes the basic structure for a coaching session, but it is the client that determines the content, goals and outcome of each session. Empowering the client and providing the groundwork for self-actualization is the goal of the coach-client relationship.

POSITIVE ENVIRONMENT-Establish a Safe Positive Environment for the session • Each session will begin by creating a positive, open, confidential, non-judgmental, safe environment where the Coach & Client can be fully present. This can be created through several methods; Ensuring confidentiality, sharing an achievement or “win”, a quick meditation or a simple breathing exercise. This will be determined by the Clients comfort level and implemented with the Clients approval and best interest in mind.
OBJECTIVE-Establish Objectives, Goals & Focus for the session • The Client will determine the objective, or the area of focus for each session by defining what they would like to explore or accomplish. A pre-session form will be used to aid in the focus and to help the Coach better prepare for the session.
WORK TO DEFINE EXPECTATIONS-Define what a “successful” session would be • The Client will be asked to define expectations and how they can measure the value of the session in relation to the defined goal. What would it look like for the session to be considered successful? The Client will determine the definition of “success” based on their own measurements.
EXPLORE-Explore Gaps, Obstacles & Potential • The Coach and Client will use the session to explore gaps between the current situation and the defined goal, as well as discuss potential scenarios and possible resolutions or actions. Tools used to explore and discover might include; questions to shift perspective, exploration of values, visualization exercises, uncovering belief systems and a variety of other assessment tools. The exploration process is always under the control of the Client. The role of the Coach is to guide the Client through the exploration process.
RESPOND-Define Action Plan by responding to the exploration • Exploring the gaps between the Clients current situation and their defined goal will in most cases lead to the Client defining actions that will move them closer to the desired outcome. The Coach & Client will work together to identify obstacles to these actions as well as to define methods for goal attainability, measurement, and accountability.
SUMMARIZE-Reflect on the session and the “takeaways” • The end of the session will be used to give the Coach & Client the space to summarize and review the expectation of the session in relation to how they view the actual “success” of the session. At this time, the Coach & Client will reflect on the value and the “takeaways” relative to the Clients renewed awareness and action plan.

ABOUT ME AS A COACH AND PHOTOGRAPHER My experience as a portrait photographer uniquely applies and enhances my approach as a coach. Both require creativity, sensitivity, curiosity and a desire to deliver a life altering experience. In my portrait photography, I have found that everyone is uniquely beautiful, but not everyone has developed that self-realization and awareness. Through transformational portrait experiences, I have realized my personal mission is to help people see themselves as their friends and loved ones see them. Not many of us can simply stand in front of a camera and produce an amazing picture of ourselves. It takes exploring what angle looks best, what light to use, what position or pose is flattering, as well as being comfortable and open to the experience. A portrait session requires connection, vulnerability, and trust‌it is essential for a good result. Coaching follows the same path, and in fact has influenced and increased the quality of my connections with my portrait clients. The portrait experience typically leads to a client discovering a new confidence and a shift in how they feel about themselves, which ultimately affects their lives in a myriad of ways they may have never considered. Coaching can achieve the same results, providing a win-win experience for coach and client.
