NATIVE

Gardening with native plants to support pollinators has become wildly popular in the last several years. Fifty-seven years after Rachel Carson’s “Silent Spring” warned of bird die-offs from pesticides, a new bio-crisis may be emerging. Studies in Germany suggest that flying-insect populations have plummeted by 75 percent in the last 30 years, numbers which are reflected here in Maryland as well. The UN warns that 40 percent of pollinators, particularly bees and butterflies, are at risk of extinction. These new findings have serious implications for humans because insects form the basis of our entire ecosystem and food supply. Eighty-five percent of all flowering plants worldwide rely on pollinators.

join the club; your habitat counts

The good news is more and more people have heard the call and are responding by planting attractive native gardens. In fact, The Million Pollinator Garden Challenge has just announced that more than one million individuals and institutions have registered their gardens as pollinator habitats. Homestead is proud to have played a part in this milestone and thanks all of you who have particpated. It's not too late to bee counted! Here at Homestead Gardens, we’ve created the Homestead Gardens Pollinator Club. Join today for free

add native plants to create a wildlife oasis Getting started is easy. There are colorful, native plants perfect for every garden situation. Short on space? One container full of natives is enough to invite butterflies and bees to visit. However, for in-ground gardens, consider planting at least three of the same perennial plants in each group. The concentration of flowers makes it easier for pollinators to locate them. It’s also important to ensure a steady supply of pollen and nectar during every season of the year. One of the easiest ways to do that is to shop at different times of the year to select plants that are in bloom.

CROFTON

Residence

Homestead Gardens’ landscape designer, Meredith Cole, recently redesigned a front yard and entrance for a local customer. The homeowner wanted to improve curb appeal with new hardscape and plantings, attract pollinators and manage the water runoff from neighboring properties. Meredith designed the new front walkway and planting beds to suit the architecture and style of the home. In order to keep costs manageable, existing plants were transplanted and incorporated within the new design. Using river stones and accent boulders, Meredith created a dry stream along the property line to help channel and slow down the flow of surface water from rainfall. Native plants were added along the path to aid in absorbing water, reduce further soil erosion and benefit wildlife. Additional pollinator plants were planted in the front beds, the front yard was regraded and new sod was installed to complete the new landscape. Meredith created a beautifully updated look, while achieving all of the resident’s requests!

From smoothies to pies, people are eating more fruit than ever. Coupled with the rise of the farm-to-table trend, people are quickly discovering the joys of growing their own.

YOUR OWN

Coupled with the rise of the farm-to-table trend, people are quickly discovering the joys of growing their own food. At Homestead Gardens, we have the plants and knowledgeable staff to help you grow a bountiful garden. You don’t need a big space to grow fruit trees; you just need a sunny spot. Fruit trees come in dwarf sizes that grow 8-10 feet tall and semi-dwarf varieties that grow 10-15 feet tall. These smaller varieties make pruning and harvesting a breeze. Homestead has 20 new varieties of fruiting trees and shrubs including nut trees! Our selection guarantees an almost year-round harvest of homegrown fruit.

Fruit Tree S election

Fruit trees fall into two categories: self-pollinating trees and cross-pollinating trees. Cross-pollination means that if you plant one variety of tree, such as an apple, you’ll need to plant a different variety of apple nearby to ensure pollination. They bloom at the same time so bees can do their handiwork.

In addition to apples, pears, plums and sweet cherries are cross-pollinating types. Nectarines, peaches and sour cherries are self-pollinating. This may sound complicated, but our staff will be on hand to help you choose the best and most compatible fruit trees for you.

Fruit Tree Planting

Keep in mind that fruit will grow best in full sun when deciding where to plant. Dig a hole one-third larger than the container your tree is in. Encourage growth by removing the pot and loosening the roots. Plant it at the same depth as it was in the pot. Avoid planting too deep; slightly high is better than too deep. We advise adding Bio-tone Starter Plus from Espoma to help your plant establish fast; and then, give your tree a nice big drink of water!

Fruit Tree Pruning

Pruning your tree can seem like a daunting task – don’t let it be! Simple steps for first-time pruners:

» » Prune trees when they are dormant. » » Remove any weak, diseased or damaged branches. » » Branches with a very narrow angle to the stem should »

8 inspirations EARLY SPRING 2019

be removed. They have a tendency to split later when the tree is heavy with fruit. Wide 10 o’clock and 2 o’clock angles are best. » When pruning back to a bud, make sure you cut above a bud that is facing away from the center of the tree. You don’t want branches to be crowded or crossing each other.

Raspberries & Blackberries

Berries are another great way to produce fresh fruit in your backyard. Kids love them! Stuck with little to no space? Check out Bushel and Berry’s thornless compact berry bushes for containers. Raspberries and blackberries make a great sweet treat. They need full sun and moist, but well-drained soil, rich in organic matter. Supplement with an organic fertilizer in spring and again in late summer. Adding a layer of mulch after planting will suppress weeds and help the soil retain moisture. Trellis them to keep them supported as they grow, and water regularly. These berries don’t require pruning their first year. Tips for established plants:

» » In early spring, before the buds break, remove the » » » »

canes that produced fruit last year – they will likely have grayish, peeling bark. » Remove canes that have grown outside of the row. » Select 4-5 of the healthiest canes per foot to keep and bind to a trellis. » Prune the side branches of blackberries to 12 inches. » Prune dead, diseased or broken canes.

Blueberries Blueberries have never been so popular. They are a super food that everyone loves to eat. They make an attractive landscape plant with an orange fall color. Plant them in full sun or light shade in slightly acidic soil, rich in organic matter. Apply a fertilizer for acid-loving plants like Espoma’s Holly-Tone to help them bloom and thrive. No need to prune your blueberries for a couple of years. Tips for established plants:

» » Prune 2-3 of the oldest canes. » » Prune any dead or broken branches and any that are »

crossing. » Ideally, your plant will be narrow at the base and wide on top.

TREN The future of gardening looks very promising and

holds a connection to Mother Nature that just may be the saving grace of the planet, according to a new Garden Trends Report. Our society is moving away from being the generation of “ME” and focusing more on “SHE” – Mother Nature. Generations before us laid the groundwork, but the next generation is becoming interested in gardening as a way to escape their everyday lives.

moon struck

Stepping away from digital screens, volunteering in communities, becoming plant parents, being aware of good and bad insects and listening to all aspects of nature – more people are finding joy while helping save the environment, and inevitably save us. This year’s Garden Trends focus on ways to restore our relationship with Mother Nature by coming together. Let’s dive in...

generation With 90% of people spending approximately 22 hours per day inside, we are truly lacking the sunshine and fresh air our bodies need. We have become a “social clock” society, where everyone is stuck behind screens and online 24/7.

silence of the insects

Advancements in technology have moved our society from being outside in the fields and farms all day to being inside offices or factories. We are stuck in the glow of our screens, out of touch with nature and out of sync with Mother Nature’s natural rhythms. Health problems, such as anxiety, depression and insomnia, are becoming more of the norm. That’s why more people are starting to bring the outdoors inside. Nature has become an oasis from the desert of work, stress and the internet. Millennials, who love to be on trend, are embracing this outdoors-in trend and are becoming plant parents. Never heard of a plant parent? They are young people who use houseplants for a sense of purpose and responsibility and are taking care of these plants as if they were their children. The New York Times says wellness-minded Millennials are filling a void – both decorative and emotional – with houseplants. And it might just be the thing that saves their life. Since the indoor generation is stuck inside, they are breathing recycled air. Some houseplants can help scrub the air clean. Look to Homesteads houseplant collection for these air-cleaning plants. And houseplants aren’t the only way to garden indoors. Garden technology has taken strides in advancing with hydroponics, grow lights, and growing medium. These advancements make it easy and possible for all kinds of gardeners, beginning and avid, to grow anything indoors. Homestead Gardens is your one-stop shop for growing indoors. We have experts on hand to answer any questions or provide advice.

1. Lamb's Ear 2. Moonflower

moon struck

Embracing nature through gardening is the best way to connect with Mother Nature – and this includes the moon. Moon-phase gardening is an age-old idea, popular in folklore and superstition, but fun ideas are bringing gardeners back to their roots. We have seen the moon and the stars continue to pop up all over design and pop culture. And gardeners are starting to turn back to the moon for advice on when to plant, harvest, prune and weed.

how does it work? According to an Old Farmer’s Almanac tradition, it is best to plant annuals and vegetables that bear crops above ground during the waxing moon: from the day the moon is new to the day the moon is full. Plant flowering bulbs, perennials, biennials and vegetables below ground during the waning moon: from the day after the full moon to the day before it is a new moon. This year, gardeners will combine the idea of gardening by the moon to create a garden designed for entertaining under the moon. The concept of planting flowers and plants that glow at night appeals to the garden entertainer – a large percentage of consumers. Building your moon garden is quite simple – and adds a design element that really shines.

Top Tips for a Moon Struck Garden

Plant light-colored plants, such as lamb’s ear (pictured) or white echinacea to reflect the moonlight. Choose nightblooming fragrant flowers to awaken the senses such as evening primrose, Angel’s trumpet or moonflower (pictured). Keep pests at bay with white marigolds, lavender, rosemary and other insect repelling plants. Mix things up with flowering bulbs. Try white muscari this fall; it's the bulb of the year according to Bulb.com, an online educational resource for all things flowering bulbs. Or, choose beautiful summer-blooming bulb varieties in shades of white available now in our stores. Our favorites include caladium, dahlia and gladiolus!

Add a twist to your garden parties by following the moon. Who knows – nighttime pollinators may even give your garden a visit.

Food is the largest waste in landfills, according to the EPA. It is more prevalent than diapers, styrofoam and tires combined. Each American can produce up to 4.4 pounds of waste every day. While none of this is news to us – consumers are also expecting more from brands. And, brands are becoming more aware of their environmental footprint and are taking action to address the issue. Bans on plastic are sweeping the country – starting with plastic bags in retail stores and plastic straws in restaurants. In our own industry, The Espoma Company is incorporating renewable (plant-based) resin for several organic fertilizer bags. The average person can do their part by composting. Composting can reduce household waste by almost 40%. Plus, it gives you the best mulch to give your plants back the nutrients they need.

Start your own compost in 4 easy steps >>

1

Figure out how you want to compost. You can either dig a hole, build a compost bin or use a tumbler. Our Garden Supply department carries bins and tumblers suitable for any size space.

2

Layer your green and brown materials. Green materials consist of fruit and vegetable peels, flowers, grass clippings and weeds. Brown materials can be fallen leaves, ripped up pieces of cardboard or paper and coffee grounds. Note: The more green materials, the better the compost is.

3

Mix your pile to promote air circulation. If you dug a hole or have a bin, it is best to use a pitchfork or shovel to mix it by hand. If you chose a tumbler, turn it a few times daily to ensure a good mixture and air circulation.

4

To help speed up the decomposition process, grab a compost starter and add it to your pile. Our experts recommend Espoma Organic Compost Starter containing microbes cultured for fast, healthy composting. Spread your compost! Now is the time to lay a fresh layer of compost around your existing plants and mix it in when planting new. Doing your part by composting will help Mother Earth last longer and continue to help your garden.

Flying insects, especially pollinators, are at risk of dying off due to habitat loss and destruction that has occurred over the last century. Harvard biologists are saying it is dangerous because insects are the foundation of our ecosystem. And this reduction puts us humans at risk too! Pollinators – such as bees and butterflies – are an important part of our food chain. Yet at the same time, we are seeing invasive pests thrive due to a lack of natural predators. Trees, shrubs and plants are all at risk from disease and insects. The best way to handle both the decline in beneficial insects and the rise of invasives is to garden defensively. Certified arborists such as those from The Davey Tree Expert Company can help assess damage and plant trees for the changing climate of the future. Every year, arborists are getting more advanced in their models of tree care to keep up with the changing environment. You can help reduce the spread of invasives by keeping them where they are. Don’t let invasives catch a ride on mulch, firewood, vehicles or even hiking boots – they are sneaky little critters and will enjoy setting up camp at their next location if we aren’t careful. We can help pollinators and beneficial insects find a home in our own backyards. By taking care of our existing gardens and planting insect-friendly plants we all can be part of the solution. Learning more about native plants and plants that provide food and shelter for pollinators is a great way to get started. 2019 Refresh

Spring is finally here and a refreshing feeling is in the air... This past winter many spent time getting rid of the things that don’t spark joy. While that’s centered on making your home a space you love, it’s time to do the same for your outdoor spaces. Whether you are looking to replace and clean your landscape accessories or just want to add a fun pop of color to your space, landscape design experts from Homestead can help you find just the thing that is missing from your yard – and assist you in finding things that spark joy.

have fun with it Accessorizing your garden is one of the best parts of having an outdoor space. From comfortable furniture to bubbling fountains, there is so much you can add to help make the space your own. This year, add some color, such as Pantone’s color of the year: Living Coral! Go bold with outdoor furniture in your favorite color or add a subtle touch to pieces you already have with decorative pottery or accent pillows. It’s easy to show off your personality and keep up with trends with a few outdoor staples that will make your garden the talk of the neighborhood – everyone will want an invite to your next backyard soiree. Don’t worry if you have limited space or a small budget, you can still make a dramatic impact. Replacing old and tattered couches and chair cushions with new, longer-lasting materials can give your space a fresh look. Incorporate coral into patterns and fabrics to add a subtle touch. Even adding a brightly colored rug can make your small space feel complete.

go big for your home Don’t let the small items take all the credit. Take a stance by adding in a stunning water feature such as a fountain or a pond. The moon shining off of the water will add peace and tranquility to your space. Plus, it will make the

With just a few touches, you can be right on trend with the Moonstruck garden (read more on page 12), designing your garden for entertaining under the moon! Want to make it more intimate? Helleborus 'Apricot Blush'

In late winter and into early spring, landscapes can look sleepy, with no hint of what’s to come. But, one bold perennial will start to bloom and beckon you outdoors...

The Earliest Blooming Perennial No Garden Sh

ould Be Without

HELLEBORES

Also known as Christmas or Lenten Rose, Hellebores (Helleborus) are not bothered by cold temperatures or snow. In fact, newer hybrids are vigorous growers with tall stems and more outward-facing blossoms. Blooms will appear as early as December on some varieties and show as late as April on others. Flower colors can range from amber to pink to nearly black. New foliage patterns and colors add much to their all-season appeal.

the perfect soil

Walters Gardens, Inc

tough as nails Hellebores are hardworking, low-maintenance perennials with big impact. They can flower for 8 to 10 weeks and the leathery, evergreen foliage remains attractive all year long. They are rarely bothered by pests or diseases and are resistant to rabbits, voles and deer. What else could you ask for?

where to plant Choose a spot for your hellebores in dappled shade. While they will grow in bright sun and the deep shade, they may bloom slightly less. Many people plant their hellebore on hillsides or raised beds in order to better appreciate their downward or outward-facing blooms.

Helleborus 'New York Night' Helleborus 'Wedding Bells'

Helleborus 'Jade Tiger' Helleborus 'Maid of Honor'

They prefer soil rich in organic matter that is moist but well-drained. Hellebores will not thrive in wet soil or standing water. Take care not to plant them too deep; the crown of the plant should be just below the surface. They grow best in neutral to slightly alkaline soil. A springtime application of well-rotted manure and leaf compost encourages strong growth and flowering. If a soil test proves your soil acidic, incorporate lime. Talk to an expert in our Garden Supply department to learn more. Our experts also recommend applying Espoma Organic’s Plant-Tone fertilizer in spring and late summer to help your plants thrive.

Walters Gardens, Inc

In January or February cut the old foliage stems all the way back to the ground to make room for the bright new foliage and emerging flower stems. Some varieties will seed in and produce new plants if happy. If you don’t want them to, cut back the flower stems after they bloom to prevent spreading. The plants may be divided in spring or late summer after several years.

CBD oils

Ask anyone with a pet and they will tell you it’s the best thing to happen to them.

Even those reluctant to get a pet at first, end up falling in love. We can’t imagine our lives without our furry friends. So, it will come as no surprise that pet parents will try anything for their pets – big or small. There has been a lot of talk in pet wellness trends about CBD oil for pets, especially those anxious pets. With so much information floating around, we thought we’d compile it and break it down into the need-to-know facts.

what pain can it help alleviate? While there is no scientific backing, many pet owners have seen positive effects in homeopathic remedies. The positive health benefits seen from using CBD oil with their pets allow many owners to recommend at least trying them with your pet depending on the pets current health status.

»» »» »»

Reduces anxiety in pets that have separation anxiety

»»

Comforts dogs with sore joints due to its anti-inflammatory properties

»» »»

Reduces stress caused by loud noises Helps control seizures, which up to 5 percent of dogs have regularly

Has an anti-nausea effect and increases appetite stimulation Promotes cardiovascular health, like reducing blood pressure

how can i get started?

»» what is cbd oil? CBD (cannabidiol) is a compound found in cannabis and hemp. The CBD oil that is ingested by your pet comes from hemp, not from marijuana. No, your pet will not get “buzzed” or “high” from the oil, because it lacks the psychoactive compounds found in marijuana.

»» »»

Choose quality, organic CBD oils, as others may contain pesticides or fungicide residue. Know how much CBD is in the product. Start all pets with a small dose to see how they react. And the smaller the pet, the less oil you will need.

How will it affect my pet? Currently, there is no scientific evidence of the effects on pets, according to the American Kennel Club. However, we do know that cannabinoids interact with the endocannabinoid receptors in the nervous system and help keep the body at a normal, healthy state. Basically, it means that CBD oil can help balance an unstable nervous system and help alleviate physical and mental pain.

The best part about gardening is that anyone can do it! Especially with the new line of Chesapeake Harvest herbs and veggies available now at Homestead.

HERBS & tips for success VEGGIES Committed to sustainable agricultural practices in the Chesapeake Bay region, Chesapeake Harvest herbs and vegetables come in 100% biodegradable fiber pots. You can plant them, pot and all, directly in the ground, which supports a healthier root structure and reduces transplant shock.

start small with herbs Growing herbs is easy and delicious. Basil, thyme, rosemary and chives are all great choices for your herb garden and for cooking. Parsley seems to be underrated. It really makes any dish you cook taste brighter. Adding compost or an organic fertilizer like Espoma GardenTone in the spring will provide enough nutrients for plants in the ground. Don’t worry if you don’t have space, you can grow herbs easily in pots. Just use a quality potting soil like the Homestead exclusive Maryland Select Organic Potting Soil. Either in ground or in a container, water regularly until your plants are established. You can also grow herbs indoors. Plant them in the kitchen to keep them close by when cooking! Speaking of which, it’s best to harvest early in the morning, but there’s nothing wrong with gathering a bunch just before dinner.

grow fresh veggies at home Nothing tastes better than vegetables fresh from the garden. No matter what you grow, it will elevate the flavors in the next dish you make! To get started in your new vegetable garden, first choose the veggies that you will eat! Next, pick a spot that gets at least 8 hours of direct sunlight per day. Enrich the soil with compost and organic matter – regular application of Espoma Garden-Tone will keep your plants healthy and ensure abundant harvests. Make sure you have a water source nearby and consider buying soaker hoses.

why chesapeake harvest? Chesapeake Harvest knows growing food with sustainable practices will help keep the Chesapeake Bay watershed clean and healthy while preserving farms. Tidal Creek Growers, based in Davidsonville, MD is the exclusive grower for these plants, which means you are getting quality every time. Chesapeake Harvest herbs and vegetables are exclusively available at Homestead Gardens stores. This is a locavore’s dream come true!

Why limit yourself to only drinking a smoothie when you can also grow it?

YOUR OWN smoothie

No matter what you prefer to put in your smoothie, you can always find a way to grow some version of it in a container. Small and compact, container gardens are a simple way to adorn your porch and patio with a splash of color all year long. Plus, it’s easy to create a container garden personalized to your style and tastes.

remember this mantra: thriller, filler & spiller Have you heard of the “Thriller, Filler, Spiller” technique? It’s used by landscape designers to choose the right plants and arrange them in perfect balance.

»» Thriller plants are upright and add a

vertical element to the combo. Plant a thriller in the center or towards the back of the container.

»» Filler plants have rounded or mounded

habits that do exactly what they sound like they do — make the container look full. Place three to five fillers midway between the edge of the container and the thriller.

»» Spiller plants grow in a trailing form

and are intended to hang off the sides of the container. Place spillers close to the edge and on every visible side of your container.

make a perfect smoothie

Now you’re ready to create a smoothie container! Start by picking a container with drainage holes. Next, fill it 2/3 full with a planting medium suited for your plants. For best results, use a planting mix specifically designed for containers. Don’t use garden soil or top soil; it’s too heavy and won’t drain properly. Finally, get planting and don’t forget to put containers in full sun. Ingredient Checklist

»» Thriller: Bell peppers. A surprisingly sweet addition to smoothies that pack a vitamin punch, peppers make great thrillers. Choose colorful varieties for the best health benefits and stake as they grow.

»» Filler: Veggies. Supercharge any smoothie with greens. Check out classics such as kale and spinach to fill out your container.

»» Spiller: Berries. Nothing makes a smoothie naturally sweet than flavor-packed berries. Choose a dwarf raspberry from Bushel and Berry for an option that thrives in containers or trailing strawberries that will hang delicately over the side.

Now all you have to do is wait! For a delicious combo, try combining 1 cup greens, 1 cup liquid and 2 cups of fruit.
