GROW ANYWHERE

CONTAINER GARDENING Some people love tearing up big patches of grass to convert it into an elaborate garden full of fruits and vegetables or flowers and shrubs. You name it and it’s growing. Others start gardens on a much smaller scale, due to lack of time, space or motivation. Regardless of which group you fall into, container gardening can be perfect for you!

101

You can grow almost anything in containers – if you start with the right materials. There are hundreds of different styles of containers to choose from. It’s what is planted that determines the shape and size container and the type of soil or growing matter you will need.

Growing vegetables in containers is easy – all you need is soil, sun, water and some basic care. Choose a container big enough for the plants when they are fully grown. Seed packets and plant tags will have the dimensions of the full-grown plant. There needs to be drainage holes in the bottom of the container to allow excess water to escape so water doesn’t collect and cause roots to drown or rot. Adding gravel to the bottom of the container is also a great way to help keep roots dry. Once you choose a container, find a sunny spot and get ready to grow. Most vegetables prefer at least 6 hours of sun per day, but read the back of the seed packet or plant tag for specific information. Add an organic garden soil formulated for vegetables and plant seeds or seedlings. Keep well-watered, as containers dry out faster than garden beds. Never let the soil get so dry that it pulls away from the side of the pot. This allows the water to flow right to the rootball and will not allow the soil to moisten properly.

growing herbs Having fresh herbs at your fingertips is truly worth the effort. It will make the difference between cooking with store bought dried herbs and those fresh off the stem. Herbs grow well in containers both indoors and out. Most herbs will grow in containers, but the best for container gardening are: basil, mint, rosemary, thyme, oregano, cilantro, parsley, sage, chives, lavender, tarragon and lemon verbena. Choose a container with drainage holes. You can select a traditional container or get creative and upcycle otherwise discarded objects. To get more variety in a limited space, group herbs together that like the same amount of water, light and soil. Arrange containers on your deck, kitchen windowsill, or any place that’s easy to access when you’re cooking. The area should get 6-8 hours of sunlight per day. When you are ready to pot up your herbs, fill the container half-way with a high-quality, organic potting mix such as Homestead’s own Maryland Select Organic Potting Soil. Since you’ll be eating these herbs and serving them, organic potting soil is a must! Now, arrange the herbs to your liking! How many herbs should you plant in one container? There’s no hard and fast rule. Use your judgment and read the plant tags to ensure you group herbs with similar watering needs together. Try three or four different placements before planting. And just like in those class photos, the tallest go in the back! Continued...

Growing in containers gives you flexibility of moving plants around as needed. Tropicals in containers add a bit of paradise to any outdoor room. flowers

Give yards and patios a boost by adding containers full of summer flowers. Choose from a variety of colors and forms that complement your exterior or create a space that fits your personality. Flowers can bring texture, height and even fragrance to make any space more enjoyable. The options are endless. To start, choose containers with proper drainage holes. Check plant tags for the mature size and plant accordingly. One type of plant that is often overlooked in containers is flowering bulbs! While flowering bulbs don’t give instant satisfaction, the big blooms are well worth waiting for. If you are looking for flowers that have bright color, amazing fragrance and wild texture, try cannas – the 2019 Summer Bulb of the Year according to Bulb.com, a flowering bulb association. Cannas are perfect for summer flowering containers. They will be a show-stopping addition to any area – growing in dwarf varieties from 32” to full grown varieties up to 80” tall – they bloom from July to October, providing beautiful color for the entire summer and then some. Pollinators, such as bees, birds and butterflies, help fertilize both ornamental and edible gardens. We can return the favor by providing food for them – planting flowers and shrubs that provide the nectar and pollen they need.

Plant in Layers. Plant tall flowers such as coneflowers and asters in the back of a bed or center of a container. Next, plant medium flowers, like catmint or yarrow. And in front of those, plant shorter flowers such as verbena, or flowering herbs. Plant tall flowers 18-20” apart, medium flowers 12” apart and short flowers 8-10” apart.

Keep Them Hydrated. You’ll need to

keep your garden as well as the pollinators hydrated. Water may be provided from a birdbath, fountain or natural sources like streams or ponds. Small pollinators need places to land in the water, like small stones or bird bath filler balls, so they can stand out of the water and drink.

So, how can you get a blue hydrangea? The secret is in the soil, and the power is in your hands. Tom Bowman, nursery buyer at Homestead Gardens, recommends testing your soil before you begin for better results. “This way you know what you’ll need to adjust it for the best results.”

ensure the proper pH. A well-fed hydrangea will have bigger, fuller blooms. Feed it regularly with an organic fertilizer, high in acid.

Creating breathtaking blue hydrangeas is extremely easy. Most hydrangeas, except white ones, change color based on the pH or acidity levels of their soil. You can continually tweak the soil pH until you get exactly the shade of blue you’ve been dreaming of.

Are there any other plants growing near your hydrangeas? Make sure they like acidic soil, too.

To keep your garden organic, all-natural and safe for people, pets and the planet, lower soil pH levels using an organic soil acidifier like Espoma Organic Soil Acidifier. Do not use soil acidifiers that contain aluminum sulfate. It can be incredibly harsh on plants, and even toxic to some, such as rhododendrons.

Before changing your pink hydrangeas to blue, check two things:

Are your hydrangeas growing near a concrete walking path or patio? Concrete often contains lime, which can affect the pH levels and make it difficult to turn hydrangeas blue.

Understanding Soil pH The intensity of blue hydrangeas is dependent on your soil’s pH levels. For deep blue blooms, aim for a soil pH of 4.5. For a more muted blue, you want your soil pH to be 5. Finally, if you want violet-blue hydrangea blossoms, your soil pH should be 5.5. Remember, it starts with the soil. In the spring issue, Dr. Gouin explained the benefit of getting your soil tested to

BLUE ! Pink to Blue in 3 Easy Steps

1

For newly planted hydrangeas, use 1¼ cups of Espoma Organic® Soil Acidifier. For established hydrangeas, use 2½ cups. Spread the acidifier directly and evenly on the soil around the hydrangea under the drip line, or the widest reaching branches.

2

Water thoroughly to allow the acidifier to soak into the soil.

3

Repeat every 60 days until you’ve achieved your desired color!

Don’t worry if it doesn’t change color right away. Transforming your hydrangeas to a jaw-dropping blue does take some time. For especially big hydrangeas, the color conversion can take months. But, it is definitely worth the wait. If you want to add a new hydrangea to your garden, Bowman has a few suggestions. Here are a few of his favorites. “The most popular varieties are the reblooming ones. Repeat bloomers from Endless Summer®, or the Let’s Dance® and Tuff Stuff™ series by Proven Winners® Color Choice® are great for part shade,” says Bowman. “Though, I personally really like a one-time bloomer called Abracadabra. Its pink flowers are contrasted by striking black stems.”

Homestead Gardens has twelve new varieties of hydrangeas coming to the store this year. We can help decide where your new hydrangea will thrive. When choosing the perfect tree, there are three important factors to consider: location, climate and variety. Start by selecting trees that will thrive in your climate conditions. a guide to edible gardening on the Cheasapeake Bay.

Growing your own food is both fun and rewarding. And the best part is that anyone can do it! All you need is good organic soil, seeds or seedlings, water and sunshine. Whether you have a 10x10 plot of space in your garden or you’re growing in a container on your porch, harvesting fresh vegetables and herbs is the ultimate reward. The easiest way to ensure organic growing is by planting in a raised bed. They make efficient use of the space and maintenance a breeze.

Ensuring Successful Gardens There are a few essential items to begin growing edibles in the Chesapeake Bay region. Having these materials should be high on your list if you want delicious, hearty, local and environmentally sustainable edibles this season. Be sure – whether you are planting in the ground, in a raised bed or a container – there is plenty of sunlight for your plants. Most fruits and vegetables need six to eight hours of sunlight per day. Working from the ground up, an organic soil mix should be the first thing you consider. Organic is necessary in growing food to keep it safe for those eating it. We recommend using Espoma’s Vegetable and Flower Garden Soil, which is specially formulated to help edibles grow strong roots. Another excellent option is our very own blend ﹣Homestead Gardens Maryland Select Potting Soil. Next, consider what you will grow. Starter plants help you get a jump start on spring. Using high-quality starts grown specifically for your region will increase viability and yields for your crops, too. The new line of 3.5” herbs and vegetables from Chesapeake Harvest are specially grown to

thrive in our area without harming the environment. If you are new to gardening and want to plant something easy or play it safe, Mike Leubecker, head grower at Tidal Creek Growers, recommends starting with the basics. “Basil, parsley, oregano and mint are all easy to grow. Tomatoes are also a good choice as they are tough and resilient.”

Finally, water your plants well. Edibles are heavy drinkers and will need to be watered almost daily in the hot summer. Typically, if the top inch of the soil is dry, give roots a nice drink to keep plants happy.

Why Use Starter Plants? Starting with seeds indoors brings the satisfaction of watching your garden grow from beginning to end, but it is not always an option. Busy gardeners may not have the time to monitor the seeds when starting them. And, beginner gardeners may have more success when starting with a small plant. Chesapeake Harvest’s starter plants have been selected to perform well in the Chesapeake region and the paper fiber pots are created from natural materials and completely biodegradable. Just plant directly into the ground – pot and all! No recycling required! This helps keep the root structure healthier, reduces transplant shock and is perfect for gardeners on the go.

Your Food Starts Here Beyond the benefits of the fiber pot, this new line of herbs and veggies is locally based. Chesapeake Harvest herbs and vegetables are naturally grown right here in the Chesapeake Bay foodshed by Leubecker and Tidal Creek Growers exclusively for Homestead Gardens this spring. "By keeping it local, not only do the plants have a better chance of being hearty, but the local economy is stimulated. A portion of the proceeds are directed back to regional farmers who receive assistance from Chesapeake Harvest,” says Leubecker. This partnership with Homestead and Tidal Creek is the newest endeavor by Chesapeake Harvest to expand their mission of sustainable agricultural practice beyond the farms and into the home. Grow a Kid-Friendly Garden Leubecker wants everyone to get into the garden. “Gardening can be very rewarding and can put the mind at ease. There’s nothing better than fresh herbs and vegetables right off the plant. Plus it’s an excellent opportunity for children to learn and enjoy.” We at Homestead Gardens couldn’t agree more!

Let 'em Pick the Plants.

Get your family involved with the planning. Take a trip to Homestead Gardens together and let the kids pick out their favorite fruits and veggies. Research which ones will grow best in your yard, or ask an associate for assistance.

Make the Bed.

Teach kids the importance of making the bed indoors and out. Start by explaining what makes healthy soil and look for worms. Encourage kids to pick the spots for their new plants. For readers, ask them to check the plant tags for information on spacing, sunlight and water needs.

Now it’s time to get growing! Homestead is happy to help get your garden ready. Visit a Homestead Gardens store in Davidsonville or Severna Park to get started.

18 inspirations SPRING/SUMMER 2018

Get Dirty.

It’s a well-known fact that most kids love playing in the dirt, so have them help dig the holes! Once they’ve accomplished that task, it’s time to plant. Demonstrate how to gently remove plants from the container and loosen up the roots or have kids place biodegradable pots right in the soil.

Food & Water.

Teach your kids that just like people, plants need healthy nutrients to grow big and strong. Add an organic fertilizer, such as Espoma’s Garden-Tone or Tomato-tone, to give plants the boost they need. Don’t forget to water them daily, but be sure not to overwater.

Create a Schedule.

Get kids involved in maintaining the garden by creating a monthly chart that includes which days to water and feed. Chart when plants should be ready for harvest and create a countdown for your favorite plants.

for our companion animals Ashley Helmrich, Farm & Pet Buyer

Nutrition is the foundation for our health as well as our animal’s health. The old saying “you are what you eat” is actually true.

2

What are the first 5 ingredients in your pet's food? There can be a lot of empty

calories and fillers in dry pet food, so it is important to evaluate the ingredient list. The first ingredient should be meat. Dogs are carnivores and require meat as the primary ingredient in their diet. Avoid foods in which grains and other carbohydrates are the primary ingredient. Yes, it may cost you a bit more to opt for higher quality food, but in reality paying a little extra now will save you in the long run on vet bills and specialty medical diets.

Foods are made up of essential nutrients (proteins, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins, minerals and water) that mammalian body systems then use to fuel their bodies. Each nutrient has a unique set of properties that will provide specific benefits for the animals. Nowadays, there are several formulated diets available to animal owners, and it can be very overwhelming. In order to simplify the information and make the best decision possible for your pet, here are a few key considerations to help:

Key Considerations for Your Pet's Diet:

1

Does your pet have any allergies, skin problems, or constant ear infections? If so, one of the first eliminations would be to take out any chicken in the diet. If problems persist, another ingredient to remove from the diet would be grains.

growing microgreens & other foods

There’s nothing like fresh vegetables or greens to add flavor and nutrients to salads, sandwiches, smoothies and stir-fries. And you can’t get any fresher than harvesting fresh, organic food you’ve grown yourself.

But what can you do when you can’t garden outdoors? Bring the garden inside. Plants can take up as little or as much space as you want. Whether it’s a vegetable garden on your balcony, growing seeds in the garage or microgreens on the kitchen counter, we can help you get started. A windowsill is a great place to start if that’s all the room you have. You can even grow tomatoes on a large windowsill!

Essential Equipment Determine what you are going to grow and how you are going to grow it. If you’re a beginner, start by growing things that are easy to grow and you love to eat. If you want to get more advanced, give hydroponics a try. Whichever way you choose to grow, knowing what you need is the first step in being successful. Light is the most important element for indoor gardening. Without adequate light, plants become leggy or don’t grow at all. Investing in grow lights can offer you the best results. Some growing kits come with lights built in, but if yours doesn’t, you’ll need to get some.

»» »»

Fluorescent lights use a quarter of the energy, last 10 times longer and produce more light than your standard incandescent bulbs. These are perfect for growing greens, herbs and other plants. LED lights provide higher yields of light and are the most efficient. They are especially good for seed starting because they give off very little heat. They also use half the electricity, last 5x longer than fluorescent bulbs, are mercury-free, and won’t shatter like glass.

22 inspirations SPRING/SUMMER 2018

»»

Regular incandescent bulbs are not used for growing seedlings because they give off too much heat and can burn tender foliage.

Plants usually need 6-8 hours of light per day, but check the plant tag or seed packet for your plants’ specific needs. Be sure to turn off the lights after your plants have reached their daily light requirement. They need to sleep, just like we do. A soil-less or organic potting mix is needed, especially if you will be growing food. Choose something packed with nutrients. Espoma’s Organic Seed Starter potting mix can help set your seeds up for success.

Water is the next essential component. When you first plant seeds, cover them with a damp paper towel. Lift to spray water lightly every day until sprouts pop up, and then remove the cover completely. Keep seedlings well-watered but not drenched as they grow. Air is the last essential element for a successful indoor garden. A small electric fan will move air around your plants and will help prevent common indoor growing problems such as pests and diseases. Ready to get started?

Grow Your Own Microgreens Microgreens are harvested when they’re young, usually about two weeks after planting, which helps them retain more vitamins than mature vegetables. Add microgreens to salads, sandwiches and smoothies to boost the nutritional content without adding strong flavors. 6 Steps to Grow Microgreens:

1

Soak seeds in room-temperature water for no more than eight hours before you plant them.

2

Select a container that will hold an inch of soil. This can be a seed-starting tray, plastic take-out dish, disposable pie plate or even a clear salad box.

3

Punch a few drainage holes in the bottom. Set container on a cookie sheet, plastic tray or container to prevent spillage.

4

Add one inch of an organic potting mix, like Espoma’s Organic Seed Starter, and sprinkle with seeds. Cover seeds with a thin layer of soil and water lightly.

5

Cover container with a damp paper towel or newspaper to keep the seeds from drying out. Lift the cover daily and spray lightly with water until sprouting begins.

6

Remove the cover when sprouts appear and move microgreens to a sunny windowsill or under lights.

Harvest microgreens by cutting the tops with scissors when they are two inches or taller. Rinse sprout tops in a strainer. Microgreens can be stored in a plastic bag in the refrigerator for up to five days. Continue harvesting microgreens for up to three weeks. SEVEN SECRETS to a

BEAUTIFUL There’s nothing better than a garden full of life, color and fragrance. And there’s no better flower to achieve that look than a rose. There are as many varieties of roses as there are colors of crayons, so you’ll want to start by choosing the best one for you. Pick for color, fragrance and growing habit. There are many forms to choose from such as compact groundcover roses, minifloras, mid-sized shrub roses, hybrid teas, floribundas or climbing roses.

When planning your garden, place your roses in the sun. Give them at least 6-8 hours of sunlight per day. And choose a variety that is well adapted to your region. If you live close to the water, you might try one of the rugosa roses, which do well under those conditions.

Plant roses in rich, well-draining organic soil to guarantee they have enough natural nutrients needed to grow. Something like Espoma Organic Vegetable & Flower Garden Soil would do the trick. For in-ground plantings, backfill it into the existing soil, but for raised beds and containers, use it straight.

To prevent foliage diseases spread by splashing water, add a 2-3" layer of mulch around the roots to help absorb excess water and keep fungal diseases at bay. Homestead recommends Maryland Select Hardwood Mulch, their own blend. It's 100% organic with no harmful chemicals or dyes!

No matter which you choose, how you care for them remains the same. Lance Walheim, author and Bayer Advanced Garden Expert, shares his seven secrets to growing beautiful gardens of roses...

Miniature Rose Mandarin Sunblaze®

Feed roses every 4 to 6 weeks or use Bayer Advanced Rose & Flower Fertilizer which lasts up to 4 months! Proper fertilizing promotes more blooms and healthier plants.

Homestead Garden can help guide you in your rose planting needs. Visit Homestead Gardens in Davidsonville or Severna Park and speak with one of our experts today!

Don’t just plant and forget. Inspect your roses frequently for signs of insects or disease. Black spot is one of the most common rose diseases in the Chesapeake Bay Region. Control it, and many common insects, with Bayer Advanced 3-in-1 Insect, Disease & Mite Control.

Hybrid Tea Rose Sweet Mademoiselle™

28 inspirations SPRING/SUMMER 2018

Roses will bloom all season if you remove spent flowers. Deadheading encourages reblooming and keeps roses in shape. Cut dead roses just below the flower to the first set of leaves. Leave the leaves though, since these help plants grow strong.

ose Hybrid Tea Rose Dee-Lish®

4

Once roses are planted water deeply at least once a week during dry spells. Keep the soil around your roses moist, but not so wet that they drown. When watering, avoid getting the foliage wet as this breeds disease.

Community corner

Champions of the Chesapeake The Chesapeake Bay is home to more than 18 million people and 3,600 species of plants and animals. Almost everyone in our community lives in close proximity to a stream or other waterway that discharges directly into the Bay. Therefore, how we live has a direct impact on its health and sustainability. Homestead Gardens strives to promote public awareness and participation in protecting and restoring our Chesapeake Bay. Homestead serves as a resource for landowners to learn and implement the best practices to protect and restore the Chesapeake Bay. One of the most pressing issues at hand is urban and suburban runoff, which is a major source of pollution to the Bay. We offer workshops and educational seminars on how concerned homeowners can design their lawns and gardens to prevent run-off into our waterways and eventually making their way to the Bay. Homestead’s team can assist with the selection of plants, shrubs and trees best suited for this practice. In keeping current with best practices for sustainable landscaping, Homestead Gardens is proud to have three Chesapeake Certified Landscape Professionals (CBLP) on our Landscaping staff. The CBLP program is a new, voluntary certification system for professionals who design, install and maintain sustainable landscapes. Their credential training and examination are both based on a core of set standards in sustainable landscaping,

emphasizing storm water, retrofit best practices and conservation landscaping with native plants to benefit the environment. Homestead Gardens supports several non-profit organizations in our community who are at the forefront of restoring the Chesapeake Bay: University of Maryland Center for Environmental Sciences, South River Federation, the Chesapeake Bay Trust, Annapolis Maritime Museum, the Watershed Stewardship Academy and the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center are among the many organizations we are proud to work with to insure the good health and sustainability of the Chesapeake Bay.
