S OU T H DA KO TA C HOR A L E Based in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, the South Dakota Chorale is a collaborative network of musicians combining the talents of singers locally, regionally, and across the nation. “Bringing people together to produce inspirational world-class performances of choral arts that embrace professional artistry and enrich the cultural life of South Dakotans” is our mission, and we strive to reach this in all of our work. In our seven-year history we have developed educational collaborations with high school choirs, led enriching masterclasses with pre-professional/collegiate singers, partnered with local arts series to build support and awareness for the choral arts, initiated a guest conductor residency, and released two commercial recordings in collaborations with GRAMMY® award-winning producer, Blanton Alspaugh.

Brian A. Schmidt, Conductor

Our singers represent a wide range of professionals; from people with day jobs in other disciplines, to collegiate voice teachers and choral conductors, to others who make their daily living singing opera and oratorio around the country. While our backgrounds are diverse, one thing unites us in our work in the Chorale, and that is the magic and beauty of collaborative singing — something that cannot be achieved by oneself or without an audience. We are grateful to have you here in our audience today, and we hope that our performance can convey the range of beauty contained in these “Songs & Sonnets” in a way that fills your heart and mind.

LIVE WITH ME AND BE MY LOVE The Passionate Shepherd, Marlowe; The Nymph’s Reply, Raleigh; The Merry Wives of Windsor, Shakespeare Live with me, and be my love, And we will all the pleasures prove That hills and valleys, dales and fields, And all the craggy mountains yields.

A belt of straw and ivy buds, With coral clasps and amber studs; And if these pleasures may thee move, Then live with me and be my love.

There will we sit upon the rocks, And see the shepherds feed their flocks, By shallow rivers, by whose falls Melodious birds sing madrigals.

If that the world and love were young, And truth in ev’ry shepherd’s tongue, These pretty pleasures might me move, To live with thee and be thy love.

There will I make thee a bed of roses, With a thousand fragrant posies, A cap of flowers and a kirtle Embroider’d all with leaves of myrtle.

IT WAS A LOVER AND HIS LASS As You Like It It was a lover and his lass, With a hey, and a ho, and a hey nonino, That o’er the green cornfield did pass, In the spring time, the only pretty ring time, When birds do sing, hey ding-a-ding, ding; Sweet lovers love the spring.

This carol they began that hour, With a hey, and a ho, and a hey nonino, How that life was but a flower, In the spring time, the only pretty ring time, When birds do sing, hey ding-a-ding, ding; Sweet lovers love the spring.

Between the acres of the rye, With a hey, and a ho, and a hey nonino, These pretty country folks would lie, In the spring time, the only pretty ring time, When birds do sing, hey ding-a-ding, ding; Sweet lovers love the spring.

And, therefore, take the present time With a hey, and a ho, and a hey nonino, For love is crowned with the prime In the spring time, the only pretty ring time, When birds do sing, hey ding-a-ding, ding; Sweet lovers love the spring.

WHO IS SILVIA? Two Gentlemen of Verona Who is Silvia? what is she, That all our swains commend her? Holy, fair, and wise is she; The heaven such grace did lend her, That she might admired be.

Then to Silvia let us sing, That Silvia is excelling; She excels each mortal thing Upon the dull earth dwelling: To her let us garlands bring.

Is she kind as she is fair? For beauty lives with kindness. Love doth to her eyes repair, To help him of his blindness, And, being helped, inhabits there.

FIE ON SINFUL FANTASY! Merry Wives of Windsor Fie on sinful fantasy! Fie on lust and luxury! Lust is but a bloody fire, Kindled with unchaste desire, Fed in heart, whose flames aspire As thoughts do blow them, higher and higher.

HEY, HO, THE WIND AND THE RAIN Twelfth Night When that I was and a little tiny boy, With hey, ho, the wind and the rain, A foolish thing was but a toy, For the rain it raineth every day. But when I came to man’s estate, With hey, ho, the wind and the rain, ‘Gainst knaves and thieves men shut their gate, For the rain it raineth every day. But when I came, alas! to wive, With hey, ho, the wind and the rain,

BIRTHDAY MADRIGALS for Shearing’s 75th birthday

By swaggering could I never thrive, For the rain it raineth every day. But when I came unto my beds, With hey, ho, the wind and the rain, With toss-pots still had drunken heads, For the rain it raineth every day. A great while ago the world begun, With hey, ho, the wind and the rain, But that’s all one, our play is done, And we’ll strive to please you every day.

MY TRUE LOVE HATH MY HEART Arcadia, Sidney My true-love hath my heart and I have his, By just exchange one for the other given: I hold his dear, and mine he cannot miss; There never was a bargain better driven.

His heart his wound received from my sight; My heart was wounded with his wounded heart; For as from me on him his hurt did light, So still, methought, in me his hurt did smart:

His heart in me keeps me and him in one; My heart in him his thoughts and senses guides: He loves my heart, for once it was his own; I cherish his because in me it bides.

Both equal hurt, in this change sought our bliss, My true-love hath my heart and I have hi

COME LIVE WITH ME The Passionate Shepherd, Marlowe; The Nymph’s Reply, Raleigh Come live with me and be my love, And we will all the pleasures prove That valleys, groves, and hills and fields, Woods or steepy mountains yields.

The flow’rs do fade, and wanton fields To wayward winter reck’ning yields: A honey tongue, a heart of gall, Is fancy’s spring, but sorrow’s fall.

If all the world and love were young, And truth in ev’ry shepherd’s tongue, These pretty pleasures might me move To live with thee and be thy love. And we will sit upon the rocks Seeing shepherds feed their flocks, By shallow rivers, to whose falls Melodious birds sing madrigals.

A gown made of the finest wool, Which from our pretty lambs we pull; Fair lined slippers for the cold, With buckles of the purest gold;

Time drives the flocks from field to fold, When rivers rage and rocks grow cold; And Philomel becometh dumb; The rest complains of cares to come. And I will make thee beds of roses And a thousand fragrant posies, A cap of flowers, and a kirtle Embroider’d all with leaves of myrtle.

LUX AETERNA from Requiem

Thy gowns, thy shoes, thy beds of roses, Thy cap, thy kirtle, and thy posies Soon break, soon wither, soon forgotten, In folly ripe, in reason rotten. The shepherd swains shall dance and sing For thy delight each May morning: If these delights thy mind may move, Then live with me and be my love. If youth could last, and love still breed, Had joys no date, nor age no need, Then these delights my mind might move To live with thee and be thy love.

Steve Dobrogosz (b1956) Sand Castle Music Inc

Lux aeterna luceat eis, Domine, cum sanctis tuis in aeternum, quia pius es.

Let perpetual light shine upon them, O Lord, with your saints for ever, for you are merciful

Requiem aeternam dona eis, Domine, et lux perpetua luceat eis.

Grant them eternal rest, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them

FANCY Merchant of Venice Tell me where is fancy bred. Or in the heart or in the head? How begot, how nourishèd? Reply, reply.

It is engendered in the eyes, With gazing fed, and fancy dies In the cradle where it lies. Let us all ring fancy’s knell I’ll begin it.—Ding, dong, bell.

O MISTRESS MINE Twelfth Night O mistress mine, where are you roaming? O stay and hear! your true love’s coming, That can sing both high and low: Trip no further, pretty sweeting. Journeys end in lovers’ meeting. Every wise man’s son doth know.

What is love? ’tis not hereafter. Present mirth hath present laughter. What’s to come is still unsure. In delay there lies no plenty. Then come kiss me, sweet and twenty, Youth’s a stuff will not endure

DIRGE Cymbeline Fear no more the heat o’ the sun, Nor the furious winter’s rages; Thou thy worldly task hast done, Home art gone, and ta’en thy wages; Golden lads and girls all must As chimney-sweepers, come to dust.

Fear no more the lightning-flash, Nor the all-dreaded thunder-stone; Fear not slander, censure rash; Thou hast finish’d joy and moan: All lovers young, all lovers must Consign to thee, and come to dust.

Fear no more the frown o’ the great, Thou art past the tyrant’s stroke; Care no more to clothe and eat; To thee the reed is as the oak: The sceptre, learning, physic, must All follow this, and come to dust.

No exorciser harm thee! Nor no witchcraft charm thee! Ghost unlaid forbear thee! Nothing ill come near thee! Quiet consummation have; And renowned be thy grave!

WHEN SUE WEARS RED When Susanna Jones wears red Her face is like an ancient cameo Turned brown with the ages. Come with a blast of trumpets, Jesus! When Susanna Jones wears red A queen from some time-dead Egyptian night Walks once again.

Blow trumpets, Jesus! And the beauty of Susanna Jones in red Burns in my heart a love-fire sharp like pain Sweet silver trumpets, Jesus!

FEET O’ JESUS At the feet o’ Jesus, Sorrow like a sea. Lordy, let yo’ mercy Come driftin’ down on me.

Fire, Fire, Lord! Fire gonna burn ma soul!

I ain’t been good, I ain’t been clean — I been stinkin’, low-down, mean.

I been stealin’, Been tellin’ lies, Had more women Than Pharaoh had wives.

Fire, Fire, Lord! Fire gonna burn ma soul! Tell me, brother, Do you believe If you wanta go to heaben Got to moan an’ grieve?

AMAZING GRACE

Fire, Fire, Lord! Fire gonna burn ma soul! I means Fire, Lord! Fire gonna burn ma soul!

Arr Will Todd (b1970) text by John Newton (1725-1807) Boosey & Hawkes

Amazing grace! How sweet the sound That saved a wretch like me! I once was lost, but now am found; Was blind, but now I see.

The Lord has promised good to me, His Word my hope secures; He will my Shield and Portion be, As long as life endures.

Through many dangers, toils and snares, I have already come; ’Tis grace hath brought me safe thus far, And grace will lead me home.

This earth shall soon dissolve like snow, The sun forbear to shine; But God, who called me here below, Will be forever mine.
