Chairman’s Notes The Cove Chronicle is a bi-monthly Newsletter produced and published by the Community Council and delivered through your door by an army of dedicated volunteers.
physical activity equipment. Please get in touch for an application form. Information Cairns Margaret Allan Legacy By the time you read this, the five information plaques depicting some of the history of farming and land use in our area, will have been installed on the cairns. A big thank you to everyone involved in supplying information and photographs to make the history come alive. Hope you find them interesting and informative and even give you an appetite to do further research on our local history.
Volunteers Where would we be without them? Did you know that The Community Council, The Cove Chronicle, Guides, Scout, Brigade Leaders, The Annual Cove Gala Committee, Cove in Bloom, Cove Boys Club and even our two Community Centres are all run by volunteers giving up their time for the benefit of all in our Community.
Planning Notification of telecommunications mast upgrades at Minto Drive and Earn’s Heugh Road. Erection of dwelling house with integral garage with associated access and landscaping off Stoneyhill Terrace. This was objected to on various grounds including intrusion into Greenspace.
Youth Diversions in our Community The Community Council brought together Officers from the City Council, Local Councillors, Community Centres and youth group leaders to discuss what provisions there might be scope for in the evenings. As a small step, a drop-in Tuck Shop was suggested or even a Youth Cafe. Neither of these can be taken forward without volunteers.
Community Council website We are currently working on upgrading our website and will have it up and running as soon as possible.
Two Defibrillators for the Community You can read on the back page, the update of where we are on placing this 24 hour lifesaving equipment. A Friends of-type group will have to be formed to help monitor the Defibrillator Units.
Attention Advertisers – we intend having a virtual Chronicle included and placing an ad in The Chronicle will give you automatic and additional circulation cover. Dates for your Diary: Next meeting, 28th October, 7pm in Loirston School. Please come along to any of our meetings and find out what we do and how you can get involved.
Volunteers are needed for all of the above! Get in touch. You can make a difference by just giving your time. Sports Fund The Community Council has some funding available to schools and groups in our community for the purchase of sport and

NETHER LOIRSTON GROWERS We will have some growing space becoming available from 1st November. This is a good time to take on a plot as it can be prepared before the winter in preparation for planting in the Spring. Please get in touch if you are interested in giving allotmenteering a go.
Here we are at the end of our summer 2019 already, and reaping the rewards of our labours. It has certainly been a quick year so far. We have had mostly a very good yield of produce from our site and have supplies of tatties, leeks, onions and brassicas to keep us going over the winter months and have some tasty home grown foods to enjoy over the festive period.
Growing your own is a great way to spend your time productively and socially which is also good for your health and well-being so come and join us.
We are delighted that this year, Loirston Primary School is joining with Charleston to use the Schools’ Allotment. They use this space as an outdoor classroom and use the produce from their plot to cook in school and enjoy the fruits of their labours.

P O L I C E OCTOBER 2019 UPDATE SGT JOHN McOUAT Hello one and all once again.
We continue to take positive action along with support from our Roads Policing colleagues in relation to speeding and anti-social driving in the Cove area. Over the past few months as a result of this joint approach five individuals have been reported to the Procurator Fiscal in relation to various road traffic offences.
As the ‘nights are fair drawing in’, my officers and I continue with our day to day Policing duties. As you will all be aware from all my previous columns, the most persistent complaint we receive is in relation to youths congregating in Cove and on occasion causing a nuisance. In the last few months I am happy to report the number of calls has dropped in relation to youths. I am aware this does not always tell the whole story, so I would continue to encourage, if crimes are occurring (involving youths or not) that you report these at the time and provide as much detail as possible.
As always I would encourage you to speak with my officers when you see us out and about, we are always happy to speak with you. Please do keep your questions coming in and I will continue to answer these more broadly through this platform. Please email any questions titled “Cove Chronicle Question - FAO PS McOuat A0328” to KincorthLoirstonCPT@ scotland.pnn.police.uk
I know that your local Community Council is actively looking at various options to see what activities/spaces we can offer for our youngsters. We are aware of a number of orgnisations that do provide youth activities locally, however having spoken with some of them, I know the biggest issue that they have is getting volunteers to help run these. If you think you could give a little something back to your community and you have a little spare time, then please do consider contacting any of our local volunteer organisations and see how you could help. ‘Your Community Needs You’
If you don’t have access to email please do call on 101 and ask them to direct your question for the attention of PS McOuat A0328. Should you have any problems, we are contactable on 101 or 999 in an emergency. You can also follow us on Facebook www.facebook. com/policescotland or Twitter @ AberdeenPolice or if you wish information please visit our website www.scotland.police.uk 17

Cove Woodland Trust are now the proud owners of a John Deere ride-on tractor and huge thanks for this goes to Dave Reid and Petrofac who gifted it to us. It will be a huge benefit to those working in the area. By now, a container should be in place near the edge of the Community Woodland at Cove Crescent. This is to house items needed by volunteers who work on the Woodland Walk and indeed the whole Community Woodland. Many thanks to Andrew Stephen for his great work on clearing the area prior to the container. Further thanks go to Andrew Stephen who kindly did some grass cutting early in September. If you have recently been to the Community Woodland you’ll have noticed some brand new, but temporary, signs featuring the beautiful Cove Woodland Trust logo (as shown at the top of this page). Permanent signs will be installed soon. As the area slowly develops and more people are making use of it a timely reminder to please pick up your litter, dog waste etc. and remove to the nearest bin. Thank you.

Charleston School News
Throughout the year we are creating many more opportunities for parents/ carers and the wider community to be a part of our school family. Our ambition is for our school to have a more prominent role in community life.
We welcome all our families returning to school after the holidays and it great to see so many new families joining us this year. I hope you are all well rested after the summer break and looking forward to the year ahead.
Please can I remind all who drive past the school to keep their speed down and to take care where our children may be crossing. We still have no crossing patroller on Charleston Road so please take extra care as the mornings will soon be getting darker.
As you may be aware Mr. Middleton (Acting Headteacher) departed at the end last session to return to his previous post at Ashley Road and we wish him well in his work there. He will be missed as part of the Charleston Team. The Head Teacher vacancy will be advertised at some point in the future months. In the meantime I am taking responsibility as Acting Headteacher with Mr Hall supporting the management team as Acting Depute Headteacher.
Could all parents/carers coming to drop off and collect children from school please remember that the back car park is for staff parking only. Gates to this area will be closed from 8:45 am – 4 pm to allow staff to make use of this area.
As a whole school we are continuing to work on our School Priorities. As part of our ongoing cycle of improvement this year, our four priority areas are:
We do appreciate the issues with parking around the school and for this reason many opt for leaving their car at home and walking to and from school. If you must take your car please ensure you park it safely, legally and considerately.
1. To increase attainment through developing approaches to numeracy, target setting and pupil profiling. 2. To overcome barriers to learning and children’s experience through further development of targeted support and extra-curricular activities available for all.
Please do not park in the bus bay at the start and end of day as it needs to be kept clear for the breakfast/after school club and the children returning from swimming.
3. To continue to develop our curriculum rationale, focusing on the development of pupil leadership and skills development.
We are all looking forward to another busy year.
4. To increase parental engagement. 31
Yours sincerely Anna Cartlidge Headteacher (Acting)

Portlethen and District Rotary Cove in Bloom will shortly be planting purple crocus corms in the shape of a Rotary wheel for our Purple4polio campaign. These will remind us in spring of Rotary International’s promise to the children of the world to rid them of this awful disease. Thank you to Wendy Suttar and her team for helping us with this project. World Polio Day is Wednesday October 24th and hopefully there will be some buildings lit up in purple around Aberdeen, including the Beach Ballroom.
We have changed our meeting times to the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of the month, at 7.00pm, or if you would like to eat with us let us know and come at 6.15, still in Portlethen Golf club. Do you have the odd hour to help us with community projects? We’re meeting for a coffee and chat on the 1st Saturday every month at 11am in The Sitting Room, The Green, Bruntland Road, Portlethen. Our first Saturday coffee was very enjoyable and social and the pancakes are to die for!, We would love for anyone else to join us and find out what we do.
We’re looking forward to hearing from our RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Award) candidate in a couple of weeks, Adam thoroughly enjoyed his outward- bound week at Abernethy which was fully sponsored by us. If you know of anyone aged between 16 and 18 who would benefit from this experience next summer, please get in touch.
CAN WE DO ANYTHING FOR YOU? Service in the community is something we can offer, if you have any ideas how WE can help YOU please let us know. Contact us via the club Facebook messenger on our page or via the website: www.portlethenrotary.com

Defibrillators for our Community Each week in Scotland, around 70 people have a sudden cardiac arrest at home, work or in a public place. In a cardiac arrest, the heart goes into an irregular rhythm, and stops pumping blood around the body. It can affect people of all ages and levels of fitness, sometimes with no prior warning or symptoms. It is most commonly caused by a problem with electrical signals in the heart. For every minute that passes without action, the person’s chance of survival drops by 10%. So acting quickly, while the ambulance is on its way, is vital. Starting cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) as soon as possible, and using a defibrillator if one is available, will give the person the best chance of survival. To be most effective, a defibrillator needs to be used within the first few minutes of collapse, which is why it’s so important to have easy access to them in local communities. The Community Council has successfully applied for funding help from Dragados (Aberdeen Harbour Expansion Project) and St John Scotland to install two Public Access
Defibrillators in Cove. We are at present working with the City Council to place one at each of the two local Primary Schools. They will be installed in heated cabinets which means they can be placed on the outside of the building, protected from all weathers, while available for use 24/7 in an emergency. St John Scotland is supporting us through their defibrillator scheme, where if we meet a fundraising target of £1,000 for each defibrillator and cabinet, they will contribute the remainder of the funding. Their volunteers will also give us CPR and Defibrillator Awareness Training for our schools and the community, which will be organised once the equipment is in place. With Dragados’ help we have hit our fundraising target and the Defibrillators will be in place once permissions for their installation have been secured. There may also be additional costs to be covered with the installation work. We are setting up a Friends group to monitor and raise further funds to maintain the units. Please get in touch if you want to get involved. info@cove-bay.com
