PROLOGUE

Complexities of Penetrations

Continuous spaces are always more dynamic. While living in Changsha, observing and photographing the activities happening in the old city was easy, especially among the elderly and Migrant workers. Because of my experience growing up in the old town, I found that the city's design and management strategies still needed to be improved for these people. In addition to heritage conservation and street restoration, which are the concerns of most students, I am more interested in ageing issues, health problems, and related housing issues and apply my thinking on these issues to my work. In all my designs, therefore, in conjunction with the diverse urban context, I have designed a series of penetrative spaces at different scales that strengthen the connection between the individual and the city.

This series of works is a reflection and design from small buildings to the scale of the city, showing care for the different inhabitants of the city.

This course offers a large room for research on the interaction and conflict between government policy and capital on urban space, which I am interested in. RESTORATIVE RESIDENCE

Residential Complex, Locality and Psychological Healing

In China, many residences were only built for sheltering from the 1950s. In the 21st century, many ancient streets and alleys in Changsha were demolished and constructed into new skyscrapers, so many open spaces suitable for communication were removed. Instead of the closer neighbourhood in the past, the relationships in the new departments are becoming fragile because of the oversized scale. And this makes people in the urban city seldom have friends to de-stress with. Moreover, sometimes it leads to people suffering from many psychological problems.

In this project, I tried to create a residential complex with streets and yards like the ancient streets. The streets inside connect different restorative areas and dwellings, and the residents could live in this community and try to cure themselves.

Historical Streets Impressions

The old-street spaces in Changsha may not be large enough for everyone, but it is sufficient for everyone and allows for easy networking. And the rich variety of functions in the streets often brings a sense of satisfaction.

Spatial Prototypes Inspired By Historical Streets

The space of the street and the courtyard it covers is extracted as the prototype. The prototype is classified by its entrances and exits with its spatial form.

Location Analysis

The questionnaires revealed that students often live with their parents in the neighborhood. Most of them who attend here are often under more significant psychological pressure.

The archetypes are combined vertically to form a functional circulation.

Strategy

This design aims to create a liveable and stress-relieving housing complex to solve psychological problems. It is hoped that it can help more people with psychological issues.

The small courtyards within these spaces create an environment for staying and communicating. People can also soothe themselves with greenery in the planted gardens on the roof.

Non-residents of the building are implied to move around only in the most obvious public areas, while residents can quickly reach the spaces they need to go to via other internal staircases.

User-defined Areas

The customization of the space in which the inhabitants of the old alleyways live is also a reason for their comfort. In this design, the ground floor is therefore elevated. The space is divided by curved and sliced walls, distinguishing different scales of space where residents can carry out their customary activities. In the courtyard at the center of the building, the staircase in the main line is extended to create a space that can be used multifunctionally.

VIEWS PENETRATE BLOCK

GYMNASIUM UNDER THE MOUTAIN

The project is like a park made up of permeable and natural surfaces. Designing the outer slopes and planted roofs to create a route that removes the boundaries between internal and external sites to make this building could play a role in sports, socializing, and ecology.

Therefore, it aims to provide the public with an open natural public space and awaken the "wildness" of human beings in an urban site.

Transparent Facade

A transparent glass curtain wall is used in the middle level of the building. Students can see the game happening inside the stadium from outside, allowing outsiders to participate in the sports game.

The roof of the building is planted to create a more natural and intimate atmosphere. A high space has been reserved underneath the drainage structure. Once on the roof, users can use the area for leisurely activities.

A Urban Design for Non-motolized activities, Comunicative and efficient Skyscraper

The design is based on a three-dimensional approach to work and life. It introduces the concept of parallel and vertical space in urban skyscrapers, emphasising reconstructing and linking the relationship between people and the environment in the post-modern era and bringing office and life back to nature. Furthermore, it provides a vibrant way of working and living.

The project aims to bridge the transition between the high-tech area and the old town through the rational design of activities and functions within site and to rationalise the morphology of the area based on the positioning of the site itself and the relationship between views. At the same time, it allows people to gather here and reduce communication barriers in modern society

Site Analysis Based on Morphology Generation Masterplan of Skyscraper and the Sport Trail

The design is designed to mend the urban fabric of this area by interpenetrating the old and new neighbourhoods.

A series of activity spaces on the roof of the building are linked to the sports trail, revitalising the roof space and creating a place of interaction.

A Urban Design for Cross-track Connection, Function Complement

Changsha is one of the most developed cities in China in terms of media and arts, and its local television station is one of the most famous entertainment stations in China. Changsha is an up-and-coming internet city with an endless stream of tourists yearly. As the end of the road and the starting point of the city's tourism, the railway station should play its part in making an impression. It is essential to create a good start to a visitor's journey.

By analyzing the existing problems at Changsha Railway Station and catering to three types of tourists (elderly people returning home from retirement, youth returning from other cities, and tourists travelling for fun), the project aims to create an area that gives a good impression of the city skyline at the moment of arrival at the station by train. In addition, the whole site has been created as a "pre-ride" area to make it easier for visitors to move around and to give them a better feeling.

Changsha is one of the media cities of China, so the design of the railway station block should reflect its unique cultural and entertainment atmosphere.

The design, with the tourists as the main object of study, divides them into three categories according to the people who left Hunan Province in each era.

Most train stations in China are tedious to ride, so this design explores the concept of an urban waiting room. Visitors can check their luggage to the train station in a part of these buildings, allowing passengers to have a greater range of movement before taking the train.At the same time, a walkway and a small tram track are built over the core area to enhance the east-west connection and help those who ride here to explore the surrounding area.

The station square in front of the train station is the central area of the design. This area extends the original Changsha city plan and reshapes the skyline in front of the station. In response to the site’s problems, the plaza area was expanded, and the road network pattern was softened to allow for smoother traffics.

The media arts are more developed here in Hunan, so a media arts-related park is planned on the station’s north side, with the Hunan TV Center as the core area.On the south side, the old city will be transformed into a food park and second-hand market with a sense of senior city experience.

Walkway

The combination of an overhead walkway and a suspended tram track, gives passengers the option of a quick rail ride to different areas of the experience,and help them transport their luggages.

Smaller-scale lanes are chosen within the streets to make the site more suitable for non-motorized transportation.

The train station faces the main urban road, and a wider road has been designed to ensure the vehicular traffic.

The underground space of the station is modified to provide a parking and drop-off spot. Tunnels are provided on both sides of the station to access the underground area. A pedestrianised underground shopping street is also offered.

THE SPIRITUAL REALM SYSTEM

Architecture And City Based on XR Extended Reality Technology Design Learning Model Innovation And Application Research

The project aims to explore innovative learning modes for architecture and urban design by effectively integrating "VR, MR, digital twin" and other technologies. The results will help students to review site information efficiently, enhance the spatial experience and improve communication with teachers, thus optimising design solutions and learning experiences. The use of XR technology will also enable paperless design solutions and cloud-based learning, which will contribute to future sustainability and be flexible enough to adapt to the learning needs of special times such as epidemics.

on Development and Application of Architectural Design Course Assistant Toolbox Based on Virtual Simulation Technology

Architectural design is the core course of architecture. The research shows some problems in the current learning environment, such as students' low participation, lack of interactive experience, low efficiency, and so on; COVID-19 also exposes the limitations of distance learning in design courses, and the traditional learning mode needs to be innovated. The virtual simulation technology can help students enhance the sense of spatial scale, fully understand the teacher's teaching content, and improve the design initiative. Given this background, this paper uses the methods of questionnaire survey and data analysis, based on summing up the current situation of architectural design learning, according to the learning characteristics of each stage of the design course, puts forward and establishes "architectural design course auxiliary toolbox." The toolbox is a collection of various virtual simulation interactive technology resources, including 360 panoramic camera, VR glasses and other hardware, space panorama production, and other kinds of software. After explaining the use methods and critical points of the final built toolbox, combined with the application of the course, this project preliminarily evaluates the use effect of the toolbox in each learning stage. It suggests some suggestions to help develop emerging technologies, such as virtual simulation in teaching activities.

Preface

With the development of technology, virtual reality technology has also gained breakthrough products, which is both a challenge and an opportunity for traditional architecture education. And it has been shown that the intervention of virtual simulation technology can bring immersive and interactive experience, which can feel the actual scale and complete architectural details in a realistic environment, and also improve the efficiency and interactivity of communication, thus cultivating students' sense of spatial scale, making them fully understand the design methods taught by teachers, and improving the initiative and learning efficiency of design works. Therefore, the study of a virtual simulation-based architectural design course support toolkit is of practical importance.

Given the above background, this paper proposes and establishes the "Architectural Design Course Support Toolbox" based on virtual reality technology, formulates the support plan in stages and applies it to the course teaching, compares and analyses the feedback on the effect of students' subjective learning experience and the actual presentation and summarises the suggestions.

Conclusion

The use of the toolboxes in the curriculum has demonstrated that the use of virtual imitation technology is effective in helping students to understand the content of the lesson by visualising communication, experiencing the realistic scale and detail of the construction in a natural environment, overcoming time and space constraints to achieve real-time editing, and sharing synchronised scene roaming among multiple participants. This helps students to understand the content, enhance their sense of spatial scale and increase their learning efficiency and motivation. For students of different levels of thinking, the toolboxes are effective in helping them to understand the content, improve their sense of spatial scale and enhance their learning efficiency and initiative. The effectiveness of the toolboxes also varies for students of different levels of thinking. The toolbox has other effects on students with varying levels of thinking. Some shortcomings in using the toolboxes at this stage have been identified, such as some equipment needing to be more portable and simple to operate and the effectiveness of some modelling methods in design needing to be refined. The results of some simulations need to be optimised. In summary, the innovative design of buildings based on virtual simulation technology, The curriculum support toolkit is a good teaching tool for developing architecture design teaching and learning development.

Outcome

In this phase, we worked on our thesis. We carried out a series of work camps to verify the speculative part of our thesis. The results of the workcamps were written in our thesis. Virtual reality devices were used throughout the camp to support the design of the building, and the students could choose to use different virtual reality devices for each stage of their design. The results were presented in images and videos. VR will be used for reporting when the teacher evaluates the project. Finally, we use the virtual showroom to deliver the results.

Application Manual of Architectural Design Aid Toolbox based on Virtual Reality Technology

Traditional architectural design teaching needs a more balanced understanding and efficient communication. With the intervention of virtual reality technology, one can immerse oneself in the experience at a realistic scale. This manual is divided into sections for each stage of architectural design teaching/learning and organizes the specific equipment and supporting angles in each area where virtual reality can intervene. The aim is to provide practical guidance for introducing virtual reality technology into architectural design teaching. The manual presents the essential stages of use, then explains them in order of tool numbers, and finally provides a recommended evaluation of the stages of use. The overall serves as a reference for the application of virtual simulation technology to the curriculum.

Virtual Showroom for Workshop

Everyone can scan the QR code and can browse not only each student's drawings but also enter the proposed model for specific observation and view the video of the studentmade proposal presentation. Through the virtual showroom, students can express their proposals more comprehensively and effectively in various ways and perspectives.

Multimodal I nteraction in Urban Design Spaces based on the Hololens Mixed Reality Platform

It offers a Hololens-based mixed-reality platform for urban design. The study provides a Hololensbased mixed-reality platform for applying spatially augmented creative environments. Through multiple transformations of data modalities, we are creating a platform for designers to extrapolate their designs from 2D to 3D and for the public to participate in urban design.

Database of Hunan University Building Complexes Based on Tilt Photography

The research is as follows: (1) To study the modeling method and data architecture of the tilt photography 3D model; to compare the impact of the flight mode of the UAV on the accuracy of the final model under different environmental requirements.

(2) To design a complete process from production to application of a live-action model and to arrive at a current optimal solution for using tilt-photography models in conjunction with architectural design solutions to achieve the integration of architectural design with the urban environment.

(3) To investigate the future use of the realistic model, exploring its potential use in HoloLens, VR glasses, and other media vehicles and mixed reality platforms, as well as its application in virtual platforms such as Lumion and Unity3D.
