This year is Monrovia Association of Fine Arts’ first Juried Show. We have

selected from a group of talented local

artists to put together this show.

This year, we are lucky to have Traci Lovings as our lead Juror.

Meet the Jurors

CHAIR: ANKO CHANG

Anko Chang is an artist based in L.A., but works internationally in

Taiwan & China. She is focused on

creating paintings remixing Western & Chinese culture after graduating from UCLA.

Chang has taken social-political

issues with intentions to transform

taboo imagery to show how art has potential to change the world.

Outside of her own art practice,

Chang is highly focused on pushing the practice of art from local into

international levels by guiding other artists to achieve the level of

practice they wish to accomplish.

TRACI LOVING

Traci Loving is a talented local

painter & colored pencil artist who

specializes in acrylics, illustration pens, colored pencil,

& graphic mediums.

Always an artist throughout her life but with 4 children did not pursue the field as a career until they had

grown. A self taught artist she has

developed her style & use of color

specializing in painted instruments for artists to realistic portraits.

Her work has been featured on Mona Lisas & Mad Hatters with Davey Johnstone playing the

“Mandolisa” for Sir Elton John in Las Vegas & on Tour.

FRANK ZGONC

Frank Zgonc is a photographer

trained & degreed in commercial

photography from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. He has

lived in Los Angeles since the mid 80’s & been in the community of Monrovia since 1994.

A proud board member & active artist with MAFA, he helps orga-

nize the annual ‘Celebrate the Arts’ event. In spite of this commercial

training & back ground he is able

to meaner off into exploration of a variety of paths in the fine art photography realm.

His art is heavily influenced by the Old Dutch Masters & the impressionists from the turn of the last

century. A mixed bag that shows up in his traditional landscapes & his

very surreal impressionistic works, often being co-mingled.

Meet the Artists

ERIC WATKINS ILLUSTRATOR

Mixed Media, Colored Pencil with Pen & Ink

Eric, a returning artist for the

Monrovia Association of Fine Arts, has displayed his work of

pencil renderings at local art shows throughout the community.

Inspired by God, he’s passionate

about his work which brings him joy that others can be amazed &

inspired by what he does.

With this image he sets before you,

he wants you to see how simple the process of formulating, shading

& texturing with just the use of a pencil, can capture & bring an

image to life.

Just recently, he decided to add

color using colored pencils, pen &

ink, creating a dimensional effect to

his work.

As quoted by Horace,

“A picture is a poem without words.” Nothing more needs to be said.

JAMES RUIS Painting “Wild Life” has been my passion for over 50 years now.

“Harlequin Hideaway” depicts the

small population of this “Sea Duck”

as it migrates for Breeding to the

“Yellowstone, Grand Teton National

Park” each year. After Breeding they make their way back to the rocky

shores of the west Coast.

ELLY KARIPIDES A Southern Californian native, Elly Karipides grew up influenced by

animation & storybook art.

Therefore, she cultivated a passion for whimsical, dream-like & narrative illustration.

Inspired by childhood daydream-

ing & doodling, Elly’s main themes

are often fantasy based, including

imagery of gigantic animals, wistful

girls, & love struck mermaids. Untitled Work by Elly Karipides

During the day, she teaches preschool & jr. high art, & finds that

her love of art translates well in the

classroom environment.

JOHNNY E. SJ. OTILANO It is Johnny E. SJ. Otilano’s belief, as

an artist & as a human, that we all

exist here for a purpose.

As an Artist, you have to explore a lot & experiment, & as time goes

by you uncover your own self &

discover where you stand. No mat-

ter what other people say: continue

what you’re doing, believe in

& everything that comes out of it

is your soul, a God-given talent, a

God-given soul.

Otilano feels that his paintings

express a thousand words & myriad thoughts, “If a pen be mightier than

a sword, my brushes are more pow-

erful than a bow & arrow.” Charlotte Sveen

been influenced & inspired by Trees.
