Hiking: It’s certainly not hard to find a trail to fall in love with when you’re in southeast Iowa. We love the trails at Hunts Woods Trail near Burlington, Shimek State Forest near Farmington and Geode State Park by Danville. To get outside without venturing far from city life, check out Ryerson’s Woods State Preserve in Iowa City and the Indian Creek Sac and Fox Trail in Cedar Rapids.

Lakes: Lake recreation is also an option in southeast Iowa if you enjoy fishing, boating and swimming. Plan to cool off and get a change of scenery.

Lake Sugema: The 574-acre lake is stocked with bluegill, black crappie and channel catfish. Facilities at the lake include parking lots, boat ramps, fishing jetties, a fishing pier for the handicapped, floating boat docks, and wildlife islands. This area is meant for public hunting, fishing, hiking, birdwatching, cross-country skiing, picnicking, nature study, primitive camping and other fun in the outdoors.

Lake Darling: Is 1,417 acres in size, including a beautiful 302-acre lake with almost 18 miles of shoreline. The park, with its beautiful wooded hills and valleys and lovely lake, offers something for outdoor recreation enthusiasts, young and old. Also, has a large and well equipped campground. A total of 118 campsites are present, 81 with electrical hookups. The campground has 2 modern rest room buildings, as well as a conveniently located trailer dumping station.

Geode Lake: Named after Iowa’s state rock, Geode State Park is a beautiful destination in southeast Iowa for outdoor recreation. Lake Geode is the focal point of the park, with more than 150 acres for fishing, boating and paddlesport activities. Geodes are on display in the park office, but it is prohibited to remove geodes from the park.

Visit Fairfield, Iowa: The www.visitfairfieldiowa.com website is an excellent resource for visiting this small Iowa town and finding local events, food, drinks and lodging. With a population of about 10,000, it is known as Iowa’s most creative and eclectic small city.
