Demanding brides can lose friends at breakneck speed. Most brides wouldn’t normally be demanding with their friends, but lace and chiffon do strange things to the female brain, and before you can say Vera Wang, she has turned into a dictator. Friends won’t mind being asked, but they won’t like being told. Conversation: For the duration of the planning stage future brides sometimes lose touch with reality, and become oblivious to what’s going on in their friends’ lives. The wedding may be the most important thing in the bride’s life, but it’s not in theirs, and the bride who is obsessed with talking of nothing but the wedding is tiresome to the listener. Make an effort to bring their lives into the conversation and keep abreast of what’s happening with them. Let them know they are more to you than just a bridesmaid. Consideration: Conversations on this subject usually end with “I have a life too.” Helping the bride through the wedding planning stage is understood when accepting the role of bridesmaid, and they know that some of their time will be taken up, but how much time can they afford? Some have commitments that limit their time, some may not live nearby. A bridesmaid’s contributions have to be considered individually, distributed evenly and organized in advance. One displeased bridesmaid reported that the wedding was being held in a town about 25 kilometers away, and the bride had her go there on three separate occasions to handle tasks that could have been done in one trip – if the bride had been organized. Bridesmaids can’t be expected to be on call 24/7 and need advance notice so they can schedule your errands into their busy lives. Take time at the rehearsal dinner to thank each bridesmaid individually, give them recognition for what they have done.

Lord of the Rings Apparently Facebook billionaire Sean Parker is a Lord of the Rings fan, and it showed when he married singer/songwriter Alexandra Lenas in June 2013. Somewhere in the 9-10 million dollar range, the ceremony took place in the closest thing we have to a LOTR enchanted forest – California’s 500 year old giant redwoods. But the natural ambiance of the towering trees was not enough for this fan. Wearing custom-fitted costumes made by LOTR designer Ngila Dickinson, guests entered the glade through a six meter (20 feet) high iron gate with the couple’s initials entwined in wrought iron. A winding path lead to an enchanting clearing complete with a bridge, castle, hanging garlands, planted flowers and specially made split-log benches. Just in case guests wanted to complete their dark ages look, there was a pen of bunnies nearby.

the entourage Bringing your wedding party, family and friends on gown shopping trips is hard to resist. It sounds like so much fun to have everyone there to share the excitement; and in a perfect world it would be, but differing opinions can leave you confused and frustrated. You love it, your mother doesn’t and your friends just don’t think it’s ‘you’. Too many opinions make it much harder to choose and can actually lead you away from your dream dress.
If your attendants all love you, but don’t necessarily love (or even like) each other, when it comes to choosing the gown you could be facing a power struggle. Two mutual friends who don’t get along often express it by refusing to agree on anything. For the gals who don’t see eye to eye (you probably already know who they are), there’s only one thing to do. Split them up and make separate appointments.
For some future brides, trying to please everyone presents a serious problem. In every article you read and every expert you talk to, “Don’t shop with a large group” will be the first piece of advice given. But what do you do when you simply can’t leave anyone out without hurting feelings, and you have an entourage to rival Lady Gaga’s? Have a game plan. Before making appointments to try on gowns, go browsing alone, and get a clear picture of your likes and dislikes. Styles and fabrics look much different in person than they do in photographs. Fabrics can be much lighter or heavier than expected and different cuts drape differently. Refining your search means you won’t be trying on endless styles and getting endless opinions.
Damage Control | When someone else is paying for your gown, find out in advance if there are strings attached. At more than one appointment the bride-to-be suddenly discovers that because her mother is paying, she thinks she should make the final choice. The only way to approach this is to talk it out before going shopping. Never ever let yourself be talked into buying a gown because everyone else likes it or someone else is paying for it. Being swayed by opinion now can bring doubts later. Last Resort | If you’re facing too much opposition on which gown to choose, keep it a secret. Let them all know that you will not reveal your choice until the wedding day. By then, past disagreements will probably be forgotten and it will be too late for any objections.

Tax Tips for Newlyweds from the Canada Revenue Agency The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) has a deal with wedding planners across the country. The CRA doesn’t give advice on whether you should seat cousin Jimmy next to uncle Frank on your wedding day and wedding planners don’t try to explain the contribution limits to a spousal or common-law partner registered retirement savings plan, how to change your name, or, if you are blending your families, what you need to do to receive or change the Canada child tax benefit payments. It’s a deal that’s best for all involved, really.

While the CRA doesn’t accept name changes via hashtag, you can call 1-800-959-8281, update your status on the CRA’s My Account service, or submit Form RC65, Marital Status Change, which can be easily found online at www.cra.gc.ca/forms. The CRA has reserved a portion of its website for life events like marriage and the changes to your tax situation they can cause. Head to the CRA’s life events page for more detailed information.
Taxes not your strong suit? You can always authorize your new spouse to act as your representative for income tax matters. That means they can file your return for you or contact the CRA to make enquiries on your behalf. Use the “Authorize my representative” service online in My Account or submit Form T1013, Authorizing or Cancelling a Representative. This year, you can also file online using NETFILE as early as February 10, 2014. The CRA has a list of certified software packages on their site, including some that are free.
