Our Wedding’s Got Talent! by Cindy Papish Gerber

If your dad croons like Sinatra, your best man plays sax like Kenny G, or your sister’s an aspiring opera singer, should you invite them to perform at your wedding? If you don’t mind sharing a bit of the spotlight, there are ways to tastefully incorporate a talented guest into your festivities.

During his 35 years as owner and DJ/ MC of Festive Events, David Long recalls some memorable guest performances. “My cousin played the harp for a ceremony; I watched bridesmaids sing a duet; I even arranged for a guest to play ‘Hava Nagila’ on the bagpipes!” Noting that “even a C-level performance will receive an A reception from friends and family,” Long advises couples to channel their inner Simon Cowell before agreeing to showcase someone. “Make sure they can pull it off, keep it short, and coordinate with your DJ or bandleader to make things run smoothly.” “Feel flattered that the bride and groom asked you to perform on their personalbest day,” says T. Sean Maher, a professional singer-actor-dancer and operations director for the Yale Glee Club. Maher has sung “Mack the Knife” at three different weddings. The first time, by special request of the couple, he also sang, “I Don’t Believe in Heroes Anymore.” For that discerning crowd, since, “many guests were the entertainment and there was no dancing, I felt great about singing two of my favorites.” Dr. Lawrence Lepler has made a specialty of performing at his cousins’ weddings. He did such a phenomenal job playing acoustic guitar for Kristen Lurie and Behram Mistree’s September 2014 barn wedding, he was asked to play an encore for Andrea DiPerna and Seth Gerber’s Gardens at Elm Bank wedding in Wellesley, MA, this past September. “I prepared quite a bit,” shares Dr. Lepler. “I took my participation very seriously, was honored to play a role, and wanted to ensure that the music was of professional quality.” First, Dr. Lepler discussed with the couples what they wanted him to play (standards such as “Dream Lover” and “The Way You Look Tonight”), how long to play and when (before, during, or after the ceremony). On the day, his soulful strumming created the perfect ambience.

“It was such a special moment to hear Will perform the first song he ever played for me.” guests—went off without a hitch!” This feat (or feet) was accomplished with the help of their “absolutely phenomenal instructor” Steven Powell, director of Hamden CT’s Fred Astaire Dance Studio. Powell praises these, “amazing kids who danced a fantastic half foxtrot and half swing with tricks and lifts.” He recommends couples looking to insert some “wow” into their waltz to thoroughly familiarize themselves with their music, attire, footwear, dimensions of your venue’s dance floor, and to set aside at least three months for lessons. After pouring hours and hours into playing and perfecting John Legend’s “So High,” Will Roth felt ready to sing this “song that meant so much” to his wife, Dr. Lauren Roth, at their June 2017 wedding. With the lights down around the room, he remembers, “Taking a seat at the keyboard, trying to stay focused, and nearly getting distracted by some hoots and hollers during a high note!” “It was such a special moment to hear Will perform the first song he ever played for me,” says Lauren. “I fell in love with him all over again on our special day.”

Occasionally, a talented bride or groom will dare to take center stage. “I’ve sung at hundreds of other people’s weddings,” says professional singer Paula Newman. When she and Mitchell Grossman decided to hire a live band for their reception, “it was Mitchell’s first request that I sing to him. It seemed important to do this,” she points out. “My husband absolutely loved every second and was “thrilled to look out and see the amazed reactions” as she sang “At Last” and “Come Rain or Come Shine.” 12 Fall 2019

Jeremy and Nicole got engaged five years after they met, on a beautiful day in North Conway. Jeremy planned a hike to Cathedral ledge. While Nicole ran up ahead to see the view from the top, Jeremy knelt down and asked her to marry him. The little crowd of hikers that looked on cheered when she said “what took you so long! Nicole loved DIY projects she put together for the wedding. She made lantern centerpieces, wood slices for the tables, seating chart made from ceramic frames, and birch candle holders with N+J burned into them. Her dad made a card box out of a rustic white wooden box. Their favors included custom koozies, flip flops and a sangria station!

“We felt so overwhelmingly happy to see all these people here to celebrate us.” One unforgettable moment for Nicole and Jeremy happened during the reception. “We had just finished taking pictures outside and our reception venue has these big picture windows that face onto the gardens. We took a few moments alone standing in the gazebo and just looking at the reception. We felt so overwhelmingly happy to see all these people here to celebrate us. And it was nice to have a moment alone.” As for tips, Nicole says “don’t sweat the small stuff. Everything will fall in place. Stick together, go through the process together - it makes for a stronger relationship if you make all these choices together.”

Penny Jane Bridal B&G

q&a by Diana Whelan Deryn Donovan’s grandmother’s name wasn’t always Penny Jane; it was Lois Jane, but she hated the name Lois. When Deryn’s grandparents were dating during the Depression, her grandfather would give Lois a penny at the end of every date to save for their future. Since she always had a penny on her, her nickname became Penny Jane. And since Deryn began her own bridal shop with the help of an inheritance from her grandparents, she couldn’t think of a more suitable name. Penny Jane Bridal in Millbury, MA, is filled with unique dresses and impeccable hospitality—and maybe there’s even some extra love shining down from Deryn’s grandparents. Here’s the scoop on what you can expect when you to go to Penny Jane to find your wedding gown:

q: Tell me a little bit about how Penny Jane Bridal came to be.

a:

Owning my own shop has always been a dream of mine. I started working in bridal in college, and then I became a manager at a small mom-and-pop shop for about five years. That’s where the bridal bug really bit me. I fell in love with it—every aspect of the job, and making women feel beautiful. Eventually, I began working in what I call my “professional retail career,” working my way up to being a district manager for various national retailing companies. I mean, I had bills to pay, but something was missing. After 15 years, I reconnected to my passion. I finally made the jump in 2018, and I haven’t looked back since.

What kinds of dresses are brides

q: What types of dresses do you carry? looking for these days? a: I carry only private-label bridal a: There are two trends we’re seeing a lines (designer dresses that are not advertised). That means my dresses are more exclusive than any you’ll find online, but at better prices. I’m very cognizant of making sure that my inventory has a wide selection of styles within it. I have a little bit of everything: ball gowns, fit and flare, lace, plain, etc.

lot of right now: plain and simple (it’s the Meghan Markle effect) and very ornate, like with beading and fuller ball gowns. I think girls are looking for something different from what their friends have done in the past—you know, lacy wedding dresses for the ever-popular rustic barn wedding or a strapless fit and flare look.

What advice do you have for brides who come to your shop?

a:

My number-one words of wisdom would be to keep an open mind. The majority of my brides walk out of my shop with something that’s completely the opposite of what they thought they’d like initially. It’s fine to get ideas by looking at pictures of what kinds of styles are out there, but it’s also important to realize that a dress could look completely different in person. continued on page 22 www.bridegroommag.com

q: What’s the best thing about your job?

a:

Empowering a woman to feel beautiful about herself and being able to create that special magical moment that she’ll remember for the rest of her life. Seeing her smiling from ear to ear or just standing a little taller…creating that moment is why I do this job. That’s what I live for. Even if she doesn’t have a crying moment, she still has a moment! Sometimes Mom or Grandma cries or a dance party breaks out. It’s the best.

q: What are the price ranges for wedding dresses at Penny Jane Bridal?

a:

My dresses start at about $800 and I don’t have anything over $2,100. It all depends on what you’re looking for. I do sell my dresses off the rack at a discount, and I discount some of my samples, too.

q:

What would you say sets your shop apart from the others?

My store isn’t white molding and chandeliers; it’s in an old building with vaulted wood ceilings and exposed wood beams. It’s very homey and comfortable. Sometimes my clients bring champagne, refreshments and cheese and crackers. They relax and really enjoy the overall experience. That’s one of the things that sets me apart. Also, my expertise. by Cindy Papish Gerber

Between the two of you, you already own two vacuums, three blenders, and enough cookware to make Martha Stewart jealous. Instead of feeling pressured to create a wedding registry for gifts you don’t need, want, or have room for, consider signing up for an alternative wedding registry. “Today’s bride and groom have a far different set of needs,” says Jacqueline Strum, founder and CEO of ThirstyNest, the first wine and spirits registry for the modern couple. “The average age of people getting married is higher. And because many couples live together before walking down the aisle, there’s a huge gap for gifting.” “That’s where the idea from ThirstyNest came about,” she shares. “Wine and spirits are truly the most giftable consumable. They’re like an experience in a bottle.” Offering, a wealth

of options appealing to both experts and novices, ThirstyNest steers you through the process of building a seamless, sharable selection of bottles and barware. They’ve created a collection of starter guides that can be added in one-click, containing information dispensed from their team of experts, with recommendations from famous sommeliers, mixologists, and beverage journalists. “ThirstyNest allows you to create an entire home bar and cellar collection that can be enjoyed for years to come.” www.bridegroommag.com

If your ideal bar is situated on a tropical island, then look no further than Honeyfund. “Couples today are craving romantic travel experiences,” says Sara Margulis, Honeyfund’s cofounder and CEO. “They want the opportunity to attain a once-in-alifetime, memorable honeymoon. Honeyfund is the number-one honeymoon registry...and the great thing about it is, you get to spend funds you receive on what you need,” Margulis points out. Couples

can personalize their registry funds by redeeming them as gift cards through one of Honeyfund’s trusted travel, dining, and retail partners, or simply using the monetary gifts to help offset their wedding expenses. “You can even change your mind and add or delete categories. The cash and gift cards you receive help you make your dreams come true.” “Honeyfund was wildly successful for us!” rave Anastasia Nichols and Michael Antonetz, who honeymooned at an allinclusive Panama City resort. “Our guests were able to gift us our flights, hotel, food, beverage, excursions, spa treatments, and shopping!” Leslie and Jeffrey Lelik, “felt like royalty” on their Royal Caribbean Bahamas cruise. “We would not have been able to have this luxurious trip without Honeyfund. Not only did their guests “compliment us on how easy it was to use, we received MUCH more than we expected!” If you’re hoping for camping equipment instead of crystal, then consider an REI Registry. “With the diversity of products available, REI will help any couple get outdoors in any way they feel comfortable,”

Photo: myregistry.com/rei

says Curtis Kopf, chief digital officer at REI. Whether that means venturing into the backcountry or the backyard, an “REI registry can be curated to reflect the outdoor life the couple is looking to have. The benefits of signing up with REI include: peace of mind—every REI item is backed by a 100% satisfaction guarantee; 10% off any unpurchased registry items up to one year after the event date; inventory alerts, access to in-store experts, mobile scanning and discounts, and product recommendations; and access to hundreds of articles through REI’s online blog. Ecominded REI Registry couples can take extra comfort in knowing that REI gives back nearly 70% of its profits to the outdoor community.

SoKind Registry is run by the nonprofit New Dream. Guinevere Higgins, director of strategic partnerships, explains that today’s couples are looking for more meaningful, impactful ways to give back. “SoKind makes it easy to give and receive gifts that aren’t ‘things’ and helps reframe gift-giving” away from material objects and toward “the people and relationships in our lives,” Higgins says. More than 3,900 SoKind wedding registries have been set up, “requesting gifts of time and experience” such as museum memberships, theater tickets, pet–sitting, help installing solar panels, and many charitable donations—“creative gifts that you can’t find in any store.” “SoKind is working to change the social norms around how we

give to be more meaningful for the recipients and less burdensome on the planet. A lot of couples don’t need more stuff. What they truly want is more of what matters.” Cindy Papish Gerber is a regular contributor to BRIDE&GROOM™. She writes from Connecticut.

Maria-Rose and Joe Matick May 4, 2019 Wachusett Mountain Princeton, MA

42 Fall 2019

BRIDE&GROOM

Maria-Rose Cordella had a beautiful connection with both her mother and grandmother. After her grandmother passed away, when Maria-Rose wanted to pray and talk to her grandmother, she went to her “special place, about three quarters of the way up Wachusett Mountain where there was a beautiful lookout. It was on that very spot on the mountain road that Maria-Rose became engaged to Joe Matick after they had been dating 19 years. It seemed inevitable that the wedding would also take place there. They set the date for May 4, 2019, giving them only four months to get the wedding planned. First, they needed to obtain approval from the State Reservation to hold the ceremony on the mountain.

Nancie started by writing down everything that would make a perfect ceremony:

flow-

ers, music, food (being Italian, more food), etc. She kept an eye on the calendar and prayed that she could make this happen. She took all her daughter’s ideas for the wedding and intertwined them with her own to make a day that the bride and groom would remember forever. And as if that weren’t enough to take on, she added to her list making a variety of 1,000 Italian cookies! When the day of the wedding finally came, it was cloudy. Nancie was upstairs getting dressed while the girls were downstairs getting their hair and makeup done and laughing with nervousness. Nancie headed downstairs to help her daughter get into her wedding gown. As she held up her long dress and took her first step down the hardwood stairs, she slipped and fell headfirst down a flight of 14 stairs. She recalls hitting her head on each stair as she tumbled.

Maria-Rose and the girls raced up the stairs from the first level and ran to Nancie who was lying there covered in blood. Maria-Rose held her mother in her arms crying and telling her how much she loved her. Nancie managed to ask her to please continue with the wedding and enjoy the day that she had worked so hard to plan for them. She requested that MariaRose remove the diamond and pearl drop earrings from her ears and wear them to keep her close while she got married. Maria-Rose tearfully did as her mother asked before the ambulance came and raced Nancie to UMass Memorial Medical Center.

It was on that very spot on the mountain road that Maria-Rose became engaged to Joe Matick after they had been dating 19 years. It seemed inevitable that the wedding would also take place there.

Maria-Rose hesitantly finished getting ready for the wedding. The limo was in the yard waiting to take her and her father to the ceremony. As the limo made its way up the mountain road, Maria-Rose asked Johnny the limo driver to stop the car. She wanted to take in all her mother had done for her. She looked out the window to see the perfect wedding ceremony setup. Her eyes filled with tears and she softly said to her dad that it was beyond her most beautiful dreams. She turned to her father and said, “I wish Mom were here.” Her father responded, “She is. Look around. This is from her heart for you.” Nancie told the staff in the UMass Emergency Room that it was imperative she make her daughter’s wedding reception, no matter what! The doctors and nurses were amazing and responded to this exceptional case.

It’s No Wonder the EpiCenter is a Wedding Venue Hot Spot by Stacey Marcus

Magic is always in the air when you assemble a team of creative talent in one space, especially if that place is the newly renovated Artists for Humanity (AFH) EpiCenter in South Boston. For those who are not familiar with the organization, it’s a nonprofit that hires teens to express their creativity and talent through an artistic platform. The EpiCenter is an environmentally friendly and uniquely innovative place to have your wedding, offering several different spaces within the venue that can easily be designated for ceremony, cocktails, and reception. Its renovation, which was completed last fall, includes a expanded event space and room to further grow in its mission.

Stylist Rachel Lynn organized a team of talent for a stylized photo shoot to showcase how the space can be utilized for a wedding. “Right around the time we were styling the space, they were completing the final interior elements. With the finishing touches on the new renovations, this is now the first energy-positive building in Boston—meaning it produces more energy than it consumes,” says Lynn.

“With clients, I find they admire the same thing when they’re considering this venue for their event ... they love the mission of the space, with revenues that support the employment of underprivileged youth in both art and design,” says Lynn. The theme of the shoot is a blend between industrial and bohemian.” The recently renovated event space at AFH EpiCenter serves as a wonderful design anchor and source of inspiration because it has just the perfect raw industrial vibe to make sense of all the metals and modern materials we planned to weave throughout the bohemian elements,” says Lynn. We asked Kristina Kuusik, events coordinator at the EpiCenter a few questions about the space and renovation. Here’s what she had to say:

Can you share the details of the recent renovations? The construction includes a renovated and expanded event space and room to further grow in our mission. We added 3,200 square feet of event space to create a breathtaking Art Gallery so we can showcase more of the youth artists’ work. It’s a popular place to hold a cocktail hour or your ceremony. Why do you think the EpiCenter is becoming such a popular spot for couples to host weddings? It’s a unique venue with artistic flair and modern style. The industrial setting allows for creativity in a blank space, yet it can be softened with lighting and décor. Every wedding held here is unique and special, customized to fit the couple’s wishes.

Our location is ideal, being downtown, close to the Seaport, and just one block from the Broadway MBTA stop. We can fit up to 250 guests for a seated dinner, including a large dance floor. The adjacent Art Gallery, separated by an air wall to create two separate spaces, can hold up to 300 people for a cocktail reception. What are some of the unique features of the venue for weddings? The grand staircase on either side of the venue allows for a dramatic and breathtaking backdrop for your first entrance as husband and wife. The floor-to-ceiling garage door can be swept open so guests can feel the cool breeze outside, or to create a fun atmosphere for extending the party.

51

How many weddings do you host a year? We host 30 to 35 weddings a year. “It’s an amazing space with a great mission. No detail goes unnoticed on your special day,” notes Kuusik. To learn more about AFH visit afhboston.org.

Emily Gittelman and Trevor Hough were married on September 9, 2017 at her home in West Hills County Park in Huntington, Long Island. Emily grew up on a fourteen-acre property on the side of Jaynes Hill, Long Island which is considered to be the highest point along the eastern shoreline between Maine and Washington, D.C.. Trevor grew up on a trimaran sailing with his parents from one Caribbean/South American port to the next.

They wanted a modest wedding where the ceremony would be held in her favorite garden at home and the reception would be around the pool. To capture a bit of Trevor’s maritime history, the proposed theme would incorporate the Caribbean and the Gatsby era. Emily’s father Steve, decided to take it to the next level and build the TrEmily, a forty foot by sixteen-foot barge in their oversized pool.

Honeymoon Haven Boston's North Shore

Robert Benson Photography

by Stacey Marcus

Anyone who has ever taken a ride along Boston’s North Shore can attest to its magic. Ribbons of sandy shores and craggy coastline, a world-class museum, rural splendor, and hidden gems all add up to a plethora of places to tie the knot. We curated a list of eight fine venues to check out. Along with beautiful spots on the water, our tour includes the debut of a new wing at a world-class museum, a brand-new barn, a boutique hotel, and a sneak preview of an industrial space opening soon. We reached out to the properties and asked them to tell us something special about their venues. Here’s what they had to say: Coastal Elegance Beauport Hotel, Gloucester “Our weddings at Beauport Hotel Gloucester are unique. Our open-air event deck overlooks the Atlantic Ocean and Pavilion Beach—the perfect backdrop for a ceremony and cocktail hour. The stunning ballroom features hardwood floors and floor-to-ceiling windows. In addition to the beautiful surroundings, our culinary offerings are not ‘wedding food’ at all!” notes Danielle Maccini, director of events. One bride recently said, “Our wedding menu was more along the lines of a five-star-rated Michelin restaurant rather than your typical boring hotel chicken.”

Museum Magic Peabody Essex Museum, Salem When PEM’s new wing, designed by Ennead Architects, opens in September 2019, the museum will offer more a distinctive wedding venue than ever before. The new atrium will be perfect for dinner and cocktails, while the adjoining 5,000-square-foot garden, designed by Nelson Byrd Woltz, will provide an intimate, unique, and beautiful site for photographs and small gatherings. “PEM offers inspiring, creative, and incredibly unique spaces for weddings that can be tailored to any couple’s vision. The museum’s architectural diversity offers an unparalleled range of options, from a historic New England ballroom, to a dramatic new atrium and garden that opens this fall,” says Natalia Laskaris, director of event rentals and catering services. Panoramic Performace Shalin Liu Performance Center, Rockport “To be married on stage with the ocean as your backdrop is truly beyond compare. The performance hall, with its spectacular views and stateof-the-art acoustics, is the perfect setting for any wedding ceremony. Later, take the party upstairs to our third-floor reception room and stun your guests once again with breathtaking views of the ocean,” says Michelle Alekson, director of rental events and volunteers. Funky Fashion The Hotel Salem, Salem “Steeped in history and housed in what was once a high-end clothing store, the Hotel Salem combines contemporary design with vintage touches to create a unique and standout venue. Offering three unique event spaces—The Roof, The Cellar, and Counter—the hotel can accommodate parties ranging from 50 to 180 guests. When you picture your wedding, you don’t want it to be the same as everyone else’s—you want it to reflect you as a couple. At the Hotel Salem, we are open to anything that makes your day your own,” says Olivia Keefe, events coordinator.

Rural Romance Briar Barn Inn, Rowley Willowdale Estate, Topsfield The north of Boston is full of all the character and charm that the New England countryside is known for, and it’s the perfect destination for weddings. “Surrounded by hundreds of acres of protected forest and evoking the charms of an old country manor, Willowdale Estate is effortlessly elegant. Briar Barn Inn is a distinctive country retreat, one of the newest additions to the area. Our clients are very excited to host weddings and events in our modern post-and-beam barn, with the added convenience of our boutique inn and a spa. Both of our locations include our personalized planning service and restaurant-quality catering from our dedicated team,” says Sarah Boucher, director of sales and marketing.

New Kid on the Block Olio, Peabody Olio is a new, nontraditional event venue with a modern-industrial vibe. The historic building, built in 1910, was originally a theater, and it has amazing architecture and history. Over the past few months of construction, the space has been outfitted with modern amenities. “We are so proud to be launching this business in downtown Peabody. I can’t wait to bring my experience in coordinating hundreds of weddings to create a space that I know couples are looking for. I’m so excited to see it be used for many special celebrations,” says Sarah Narcus, owner. Image courtesy of Esso Media

Hidden Gem The Estate at Moraine Farm, Beverly Set on 175 acres overlooking beautiful Wenham Lake, this hidden gem is tucked away in a protected reserve of farmland and forest. Its spectacular grounds and estate were designed by renowned landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted, who also designed Central Park in New York City and the Emerald Necklace in Boston. Megan, a bride who recently had her wedding there, was quoted as saying, “The venue is beautiful, the food is delicious, and the staff takes care of everything, which leaves you free to enjoy yourself.” Studio Nouveau Photography

Proposals: New England’s Most Scenic Spots to Pop the Question by Emily Marcus

68 Fall 2019

BRIDE&GROOM

With miles of charming coast, acres of blooming forests, thousands of elegant restaurants, and an infinite number of hidden magical spots like waterfalls, parks, archways, hilltops, orchards, nostalgic coffee and ice cream shops, and gardens, New England offers an overwhelming number of beautiful backdrops to ask the most important question of your life. Here are a few of the most romantic and yes-worthy locations that will make your heart thump:

^

Chanler Mansion at Cliff Walk Newport, RI

Featuring stunning ocean views, luxurious mansions, and a rocky coastline, Newport’s Cliff Walk is a popular spot to propose. The Chanler, the first mansion ever built on the Cliff Walk, is known as one of New England’s most romantic hotels, offering expansive gardens and Gilded Age opulence. Every direction your head turns on this elegant property could make a lush backdrop for a proposal. Combine all of its elements at once by getting engaged at sunset on the perfectly manicured lawn overlooking the water. In the age of Instagram, capturing this momentous occasion in a perfectly composed, stunning picture can seem like a lot of pressure. But with all the beautiful locations our ravishing region has to offer, keep in mind that scenery is just that, a backdrop for what’s happening on the main stage: the decision to weave two lives together forever. So while it’s exciting and a whole of lot of fun to reflect on these beautiful places, wherever a proposal takes place ultimately becomes special and picturesque, imprinting that moment in the memories of two people for a lifetime.

Boston Harbor Hotel Boston, MA

Is there anything more quintessentially Boston than the grand archway of the Boston Harbor Hotel framing an ideal photo op of the water in the background? For many couples, the city of Boston is a special place, filled with memories of strolling along the harbor promenade and of dates spent on Newbury Street and the Boston Commons. Choosing an iconic Beantown spot such as the BHH pays homage to the importance of the city in bringing couples together. For a more intimate proposal at the hotel, the John Adams Suite is the most luxurious presidential suite in Boston. Just imagine the chandelier with over 2,000 crystals twinkling overhead—swoon!

Forge & Vine Groton, MA

Proposals and food have been a long-standing pairing. A candlelit dinner almost seems like a necessity before, after, or during the big moment. Forge & Vine in western Massachusetts makes a prime proposal venue for foodie couples, not only because of the innovative and sumptuous menu, but because the massive glass windows in the rear of the restaurant look out on the gorgeous pastoral scenery of Gibbet Hill. Watching the sunset over rolling green hills with a glass of local wine and a belly full of farm-fresh food? I think that’s a yes. Or say yes all snuggled up on the romantic and private Adirondack chairs overlooking the view, and come inside for a celebratory dinner with family and friends in the private dining room.

Newburyport Rear Range Lighthouse Newburyport, MA

It doesn’t get any more private than a meal for two in a lighthouse. With panoramic views of the coast, the Newburyport Lighthouse is a unique and intimate place to get engaged. The Lighthouse Preservation Society offers private breakfast, lunch, and dinner options, where couples can enjoy a leisurely meal (five hours), a private wait staff, and multiple restaurant options for food and drink

Friesians of Majesty Horse Farm Townshend, VT

For a winter-wonderland proposal, it doesn’t get any better than a horse-drawn sleigh ride. Recently engaged Isabel Giovacchini relates, “It was so perfectly New England with all the woods and the snow, and it was super private because it was just [us] on the sleigh ride. On the day we got engaged, it was perfectly snowing. When we got there, we got bundled up with blankets and coats. Partway through the sleigh ride, the owner suggested we get out and take a picture, and [that’s when my fiancé] got down on one knee and proposed to me. We were able to get a perfect photo because the owner was already waiting with a camera. It was a super-sweet surprise in a super-beautiful location.”

SayYes to the Dresses

rbuckleyphotography.com

by Emily Marcus

Any bride-to-be or newlywed will tell you that planning a wedding involves so much more than preparing for one big day. Between the engagement party, bridal shower, bachelorette party, rehearsal dinner, and day-after brunch, putting together a wedding can morph into planning a year’s worth of events. And because all these events are centered around you, there’s the added pressure of looking your best. So while you may have the most important dress picked out nearly a year before tying the knot, consider some expert advice on planning your other bridal outfits and the latest trends in creating an overall bridal look. 74 Fall 2019

BRIDE&GROOM

Cut Most women know which cuts flatter their body type and are most comfortable for them. For the events leading up to your wedding, choose a shape that will give you comfort and confidence because you’ll be meeting and greeting a lot of people. Wedding planner and designer Jessica Hennessey says, “My biggest piece of advice when choosing an outfit (aside from location/venue) is to stay true to your personal style. So many brides wear what they think “traditionally” may be correct for the occasion or what others encourage them to wear. Portraying a version of your personal style helps you feel more comfortable and enjoy everything to the fullest capacity.” As for trends, Charlotte Hale, founder and CEO of Plum Pretty Sugar, relates, “We’re seeing two trends: the ruffle trend and the streamlined slip dress trend. On the ruffle side, there are feminine details with beautiful pastels, layers, and florals. Our Blair bridesmaid dresses are a stunning example of this. On the slip dress side is a simpler, sexier look in deeper and trend-oriented hues.” Diane Lloyd Roth, owner of the luxury boutique L’Armoire, adds, “Slashed necklines and asymmetrical is in. It’s all about the shoulders, paired with lots of lace and pleats—very flowing and feminine. Waists are now accentuated, therefore belts are also in.”

“Portraying a version of your personal style helps you feel more comfortable and enjoy everything to the fullest capacity.”

Coordination The big question is whether or not you want to create a consistent bridal look from event to event, or switch it up based on the occasion. For those who want to add an element of cohesion, Hale suggests, “We’re definitely seeing an increase in bridal needs for events for her wedding week and the occasions prior. Often, we see her wearing white to all of them. We also see her selecting a wedding palette to wear for each occasion. If the palette is sea glass and gray, we see versions of this in dresses and items and even decor at the events leading up to the wedding.” Lloyd Roth agrees, “Depending on the color of the bridesmaids’ dresses, the bride-to-be can use that as an accent color in a lace or satin top. If she has a flower she is using, get a great print of it in a top or a dress (e.g., Dolce & Gabbana’s rose print or Gucci’s floral print). She can also use signature accessories, like pearls.”

On the other hand, it may be more appealing to put together a look for every event and play around with the different vibes and expectations for each setting. “It’s important to consider the location and venue,” says Hennessey. “You wouldn’t wear a sequin dress to a backyard barbecue. I’ve seen everything from the traditional white dress to a white jumpsuit with a sequin duster to a floral maxi, and even jean shorts and a “bride” t-shirt.” Lloyd Roth also advises to play to the unique settings. “Engagement parties are the bride’s night to show off what caught the eye of her betrothed in the first place— the sexier the better. It’s the one time you can get away with it without being censored. Be on trend as well … have fun and mix it up a bit—lace paired with leather or silk with stilettos or over-the-knee boots. Save demure for the wedding. The bridal shower is the time to be feminine and low-key. Pleated skirts are in, paired with a pretty sweater, perhaps cashmere, or you could wear a dress—something with a great floral print on a navy background. For the rehearsal dinner, go for a sophisticated suit or dress in a pale camel, lavender, or beige and liven it up a bit with a feminine accent. Think lace camisole or bodysuit; remember you’re the bride to be not the single lady.”

Color If you’re not coordinating the colors with your wedding in some way, make sure to choose colors that are trending. Lloyd Roth emphasizes, “Leopard is back, plus bright pink or pistachio, with purple being the number-one color trend. Believe it or not, purple leopard could be even better—not head-to-toe of

course— just a bit. People are loving the purples and bright colors, and tailoring is making a comeback. It is nice to see the return of the traditional suit worn with a splash of color. Think Savile Row meets Beyoncé!”

rbuckleyphotography.com

Cost Of course, all of these looks can come with an added cost to an already tricky wedding budget. “Staying within the budget means more work, but the finds are out there. Buy on sale. Peruse resale shops often, looking for specific trends and looks, say from the 1980s and 1990s. Keep an eye out for old Tuleh, Dolce & Gabbana, and Chanel. They’re often less expensive than new options, and they look more current than they did back in the day!” notes Lloyd Roth. Hale adds, “We recommend keeping a good list of high-quality shops and resources and really spending time thinking through essential pieces. Also, add yourself to newsletters and guest books to be the first to find an amazing sale on a beautiful

garment. And finally, purchase pieces that can be worn after the wedding.” It’s easy to be overwhelmed by a year of entertaining and impressing friends and family, but at the end of the day, all of these events are about you and your beloved. Whatever your style is, opt for the colors, prints, cuts, designers, and looks that you love. And have fun choosing pieces that enhance your celebratory mood.
