Interview
with Catherine Trope
Brides Essence had the privilege of interviewing Catherine Trope, owner and director of Wolford in South Africa. Wolford’s headquarters are based in Austria. Since its founding in the year 1950, Wolford has evolved from a local producer of pantyhose into a global fashion brand in the segment of affordable luxury products. Tell us about yourself, Catherine? I am the owner of Wolford SA; a ladies hosiery and lingerie brand. I love travelling, food and working - it keeps me sane. When did lingerie become such a passion for you? When I discovered Wolford! It has styles for every shape and size- their shaping lingerie makes one feel sleek and sexy! Tell us about Wolford Bridal Lingerie and what makes it unique? Wolford’s lingerie is not just about lace. It is extremely functional, has a luxurious feel and has many unique factors. There are extendable back straps for bras so that they are not visible with low cut dresses. There is great forming lingerie made from the sheerest fabrics so that no lines show through tight fitting dresses. These undergarments are important for even the slimmest figures as they streamline and smooth the silhouette. There are many seamless bras which fit smoothly under the silkiest fabrics. How long has Wolford Bridal Lingerie been available in SA? It has been available in SA since 2008 and we brought in a more comprehensive range in when we moved to our current location in Hyde Park Corner in 2012 Can we buy your products online? Yes! At www.partner-jhb.wolfordshop.co.za 6

Where else can we get them? At the Wolford Boutique, Shop UM 3, Level 6, Hyde Park Corner and on line. Which is your favourite Lingerie set and why? The Sheer Bra and Panty Collection. The sheer touch fabric is an especially fine, gently shimmering material which flatters the skin. The items in this range have a pure design and a feminine look as well as a guaranteed comfortable fit. Do you have lingerie for plus size Ladies? Certain styles that offer the required support and fit come in plus sizes. Do you only supply bridal lingerie? We offer a full range of lingerie, leg wear, clothing and accessories (excluding bags and shoes!) Do you have a range for brides on a tight budget? From time to time, Wolford will discontinue items to make room for a new product. The discontinued items are then reduced in price and these are great for anybody on a tight budget. Do you do private fittings and if so what are the costs? We do offer private fittings. There is no cost for this service. There may be a cost if alterations are required. Please tell us how we would measure ourselves for the correct bra size? Measure under the bust all the way around for the back size and for the cup size you measure around the bust (i.e. across the nipples) all the way around for the cup size. Click here to see the chart. Do you have outlets all over SA? Currently, we have the Hyde Park Corner boutique and the on line store but we do send all over the country and abroad. Visit our website:

The Team
Dynamic
by Jill Gurr
God intended for you and your spouse to be a team that can achieve great things in His kingdom. Imagine going to Wimbledon to watch the Mixed Doubles Final and you are really rooting for the SA team, because they are so focused, they always have their eyes on the ball and they support each other so well. Then, the guy really duffs his shot and his partner rushes over and starts beating him up with her racquet, swearing and putting him down and he begins to retaliate - imagine them rolling on the ground wrestling with each other, then suddenly coming to their senses, dusting one another off, apologizing and starting to play again. Can you imagine how distracting it must be for the guy to 14
‘You and your spouse need to be 100% committed to making your marriage work
Brides Essence.com - Issue 21 For your perfect wedding
serve now – he not only has to watch the ball, he also needs to keep an eye on his partner in case she goes on the rampage again….This is where a lot of married couples find themselves – the TEAM dynamic is not functioning in their relationship.
T = TRUST
to be confident or sure of, to place confidence in….. You and your spouse need to be 100% committed to making your marriage work and to having God’s kingdom established in your relationship. This means that your marriage is the ONLY plan you have – there is no option of walking out or getting a divorce or even making provision IN CASE things don’t work out. (Remember the FAITH factor – God will honour your commitment.) You also need to remember that we are fighting a battle here on earth and it is close combat – hand-to-hand stuff. If two people stand back to back in a battle, they can cover every area of the enemy’s attack (360 degrees) – your spouse needs to know that you have his back covered and that you will fight just as hard as he does to see the enemy defeated in every area of your lives. This Trust needs to extend to every area of your lives – finances (you must both be working from the same budget, and must be able to trust that each of you will do your utmost to stick to it, or discuss any deviation FIRST before spending the money – no secret bank
accounts...). Trust means that you NEVER put your partner down in any company or under any circumstances – you should ALWAYS be their most ardent supporter (fan). TEAM is ONLY the two of you, because you and your spouse are in covenant. The Word of God is clear that when we enter into the marriage covenant, we leave our parents and cleave to one another, so there will probably come a time when you will have to defend your spouse against an attack from your parent/s (usually your mother!). TEAM includes your children for the time that they are with you, but you must always remember that they are on “loan” to you and are not part of your covenant. In fact, as far as their discipline goes, they are NOT part of the team – you should support one another in every decision concerning your children’s discipline.
E = EMPATHY.
When you encounter challenges or problems, make an effort to see your spouse’s point of view. Use the communication skills you have learnt to find the root cause of the problem and then try to see it from the other’s point of view. Empathy means putting yourself in the other person’s place so that you can identify how they feel and why they are reacting in a certain way. The best place for this is to go to your “SAFE PLACE” and discuss the matter in a non-confrontational way with Sep~ Nov 2015 Brides Essence Digital Magazine
15
no distractions or interruptions. If you are going to discuss something that has been a recurring problem or is a big problem to you, make sure that you are not tired, stressed, hungry or in a hurry and take time to pray and commit the discussion to God (remember that He is the third cord which makes your marriage unbreakable, so He must be included), Praying should also help to shift your focus from the problem to the Problem-solver and should help you to keep your emotions and your attitude in check. The attitude with which you approach the problem is very important – a positive attitude will have a positive influence on your spouse. Husbands, remember that your wife is “the weaker vessel” (1 Pet 3:7), so don’t be domineering or belittle her. Give her time to talk and ask the right questions to draw her out. The most important thing here is to treat each other with great respect (Eph 5:21 & 5:33) which is something that is often missing in marriages today. Empathy should breed respect because identifying with your spouse should 16
give you compassion for him/her and help you to understand what it is like to be in that position. Empathy is not a problem-solving exercise – rather it is exercising your imagination to try to identify with your spouse in a particular situation. It should bring you to a place where you and your spouse can identify with one another and understand what is motivating the other. All humans have the same basic emotional needs - these are:
“Verbally supporting your spouse and encouraging them in everything they do”
Brides Essence.com - Issue 21 For your perfect wedding
• Love • Freedom • Peace with God • Significance • Recreation and relaxation Conflict usually arises when one partner believes that the other is infringing on or not fulfilling one or more of these needs.
A = AFFIRMATION
is verbally supporting your spouse and encouraging them in everything they do (or even attempt to do). It is very important that each member of the team is very supportive
“Mutual agreement will come from effective communication”
of the other – it does not take long for team members to discover one another’s weaknesses and character flaws. Unregenerate human nature loves to point out the faults and failings of others (it makes us feel better about our own shortcomings.) One of the greatest human needs after safety and provision of food and shelter is the need to belong or to feel part of a group. Marriage is supposed to meet this need because in society you are seen as a couple, but when criticism and negative perceptions of one another are the norm, this need will not be met, in fact, either one or both spouses will feel inferior (not good enough) or rejected. Often this is satan’s way of reinforcing negative self perceptions that go back to our childhood when we were told that we were not good enough or would never amount to anything. We need to encourage one another’s good qualities and verbally affirm one another, not only in private, but also in public. Never make jokes at your spouse’s expense, especially not in front of friends and relatives. Always speak positively and lovingly of one another when talking to others about your spouse, especially if you are getting negative feedback from the other party. This kind of thing often happens with: Sep~ Nov 2015 Brides Essence Digital Magazine
17
1. Mothers who think the man their daughter married is really not good enough for her or friends who “only want the best for you” and are certain that your husband is not the best – don’t reinforce this negativity, confirm the fact that God put you together and you will do great things as a team together in God’s kingdom. It usually will not take them long to get the message that you will not be influenced by them. 2. Teenagers who think they have a right to judge their parents and use their judgment as a form of manipulation – don’t ever be tempted to indulge in character assassination of your spouse with your children – all it will teach them is that manipulation does work. Always support your spouse’s decisions regarding your children, even if you think they are harsh or wrong – that kind of thing should be sorted out in your “safe place” when the children are not present. The way that you speak TO one another can also reinforce negative perceptions. Why is it that we think it is acceptable to be rude and abrupt to our life partner in a way that we never would 18
with a shop assistant who we may never see again? We affirm one another in the way that we speak TO one another by making the effort to be courteous and gentle with one another. It is not acceptable to shout at your spouse (unless they are about to run over your child with their car – even then “STOP” should suffice). It is also counterproductive to attack your spouse’s character because you are angry with them. It is much more helpful to be angry at and attack the problem, not your spouse (the person). M = MUTUAL AGREEMENT: This means that you should make a point of ensuring through effective communication that you both agree on anything and everything that is important in your lives. This begins with finding your “SAFE PLACE” and making sure that you spend effective quality time there. Your “safe place” should not only be the place you go to sort out problems and issues, but where you go just to spend uninterrupted time together sharing dreams, ideas, concepts and what God is saying to you. Try to make a date to spend a specific time there each week, that way things won’t get a chance to build up to a
Brides Essence.com - Issue 21 For your perfect wedding
point where you simply explode at some random moment because you “just can’t take it any more”. Mutual agreement will come from effective communication, seeing each other’s point of view and being willing to “brainstorm” and play around with ideas. You should always be willing to hear one another out – give your spouse at least 5 minutes (that’s a LONG time) to say what he/she wants to say and only interrupt if he/she repeats him/herself more than twice. Discuss long in advance ideas for holidays (don’t assume that because you went to Cape Town and enjoyed it that your spouse will always want to go there), dreams and plans for your future, plans for your children’s future and their discipline. It is so much easier to find a point of mutual agreement if you are not under pressure or making a last-minute decision. It is important that you have a vision for your lives together – for the whole of your lives. Unity is a powerful spiritual force – Ps 133:1 – where there is unity God COMMANDS His blessing – what is going to stop something that God has commanded? If you want to be effective as a team in God’s kingdom, unity is essential. Matt
18:19-20 – Again I say to you, if two of you agree on earth about anything they ask, it will be done for them by my Father in heaven. For where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I among them.” Satan’s plan is to divide you – have you so busy sparring with one another that you won’t have time to remember the power of unity. Let your focus be the kingdom of God – not your own needs or comfort (we are far too concerned about being comfortable, when God is really concerned about our character rather than our comfort.) God planned from the foundation of the world for “Christ to be formed in us” Romans 8:28 -29 - We all like to quote the bit about all things working together for good, but in this context, God planned for Christ to be formed in us, therefore whatever trials or challenges we face, we should respond as Christ would (how else do you think Christ will be formed in you?) His response to a degenerate sinful world was MERCY (not giving us what we deserve) and GRACE (giving us everything God has because of the sacrifice He made) or God’s Riches At Christ’s Expense.
