Arboretum Day at Spains Hall, Finchingfield Couples who held their weddings at Spains Hall during 2010 and 2011 were invited to a unique event at Spains Hall by Sir Timothy and Lady Ruggles-Brise. In the spring sunshine, former brides and grooms, with their families and friends, were asked to plant a tree in memory of their wedding day or ceremony at Spains Hall. Some 40 guests enjoyed the Spains Hall hospitality, starting the event with a champagne and bucks fizz reception prior to planting their own tree in the glorious grounds of Spains Hall, followed by a celebratory lunch in the Stables. Sir Timothy said: “We are absolutely delighted to welcome so many couples and their families back to Spains to mark the great occasion of their wedding. We even had one couple who came to plant a tree for their diamond wedding anniversary. The opportunity to plant your own tree is designed to maintain a long and happy association with The Spains Hall Estate. Couples are encouraged to revisit Spains in the future to see their tree and to remember their great day.” www.spainshall.co.uk

And the winner is... On February 18th and 19th, Brides etc attended the Heart FM wedding show in Brentwood, Essex. We put a hamper together chock full of goodies to help plan the wedding day and some special bits to use on the day, too. Toni Shaw, from Wickford, won our wedding hamper. This is what she had to say: “When I entered this competition to win the hamper, I didn’t think I would win so I was really shocked to receive your e-mail to say I had!! I’ve been making full use of everything in the hamper. There was a really good book that has helped me plan and lots of really nice jewellery and venue decorations that have given me ideas on how I want things on my wedding day (02/03/2013). I’ve booked to go to Mulberry House for afternoon tea and the spa day at Greenwoods for next month so I will be all relaxed while planning and organising my day. Thank you so much to Brides etc and everyone who donated to the hamper.” Toni Shaw

Your Letters I am a bridesmaid for my best friend this summer. One of the things I am doing is organising her hen party. We are all sorted for the girls’ night out, but I think she would like to do something with her mum and aunties. I thought I would get some ideas together for her mum so we can plan it together. Can you help? Carly, Billericay That sounds like a great idea. Have you thought about afternoon tea and a few hours in a spa? Bride: Lisa Grundy, 30 Groom: Sergio Morena, 34 Home: Writtle Venue: Gaynes Park Date: May 27, 2011

Summer of Love Playing hard to get paid off for Lisa Grundy when she turned down the offer of a drink from Sergio Morena. Twelve years later, that man finally became her husband. I was working at the Wig and Mirkin pub, in Chelmsford, during my summer break from university where I was studying ceramics. Sergio offered to buy me a drink, but I said no because I was working. But, once my shift finished I went to find him and asked for my drink! I think he was a little shocked, but he kept coming back to the pub and we eventually got together at the end of the summer, when I was 19. We’d been together ten years when Sergio proposed, so I was gobsmacked he was able to completely surprise me! We had travelled to Cornwall with friends for a camping holiday on my birthday in August 2009. Once we had put the tent up, Sergio insisted on a walk to the beach as the sun was just going down. Then he got down on one knee and proposed! I had no idea he was planning it – he had even asked my dad’s permission three months before and my mum had been keeping the ring for him (which he chose himself and fit perfectly). I was totally speechless as I am usually really good at

sussing out when someone’s up to something….I’m really hard to surprise! I had not even realised when three months before, Sergio had casually asked if I knew my ring size: he said his friend was buying a ring for her boyfriend and asked what size ring Sergio wore – he said he had no idea and turned to me to see if I had any clue what my ring size was. I casually said “yes, I’m an M ½”... so sneaky, I can’t believe I didn’t cotton on! I pretty much had the wedding all sorted ideas wise in a couple of months! I knew exactly what I wanted and Sergio was pretty relaxed about the smaller details so I had free rein. We knew we wanted it to be in May as the weather had been so good at that time of year recently, plus it’s a bit cheaper to get married then. We also knew we didn’t want anything stuffy and wanted the whole day to feel relaxed and for our guests to really enjoy themselves. Apparently it worked as all our guests were commenting on what a lovely venue Gaynes Park is and how much they enjoyed themselves. I went online looking for Vogue patterns as I had seen Vera Wang patterns before and quite fancied the idea of a Vera Wang dress without the price tag, but alas they didn’t seem to be available anymore. That’s when I came across the pattern that would become my wedding

pg 13

out”, but the truth is I love getting creative and enjoyed every minute of it – the more I did, the better! It’s so nice being able to create things yourself as you get it all exactly how you want it… and can save a fortune. The night before the wedding, I stayed at home making the button holes and painting my nails, while Sergio went out to his brother’s and then stayed the night at my parents’ house. The day itself went so fast! People had said to me to enjoy every minute as it goes by so fast, but I didn’t quite believe them. Vicki and I set up the cake stand and cupcakes and I tried to adjust the table settings, but I was shouted at by Vicki for being so calm and that I had to go back to the Apple Loft (the lovely cottage at Gaynes Park that Sergio and I were staying in that night) to get ready! The whole morning seemed to take ages to pass – our wedding wasn’t until 3.15pm. From then on, though, it whizzed by! Before we knew it, we were being told to hurry up and have our first dance as it was starting to get late!

dress. I loved that it was a bit different and thought it was so ‘me’. I didn’t even try on any other dresses – much to my mum’s disappointment, I think. After finding the pattern, I found every time I looked through dresses at wedding shows, I was looking for THAT dress – that’s when I knew I had to find a dressmaker. Helen did a fantastic job and I feel so sad I could only wear it for one day! Helen also made the bridesmaids’ dresses for my sister Emma and friend Vicki.

The staff at Gaynes Park were so helpful, especially Mary who was there on the day, calmly telling us what we needed to do when and helping Gabriel with his usher duties.

Sergio knew he wanted all three of his brothers as best men (he also has two sisters), so dressing them and both our dads was a bit of a task. We really liked the slim fit suits and since Moss Bros only do standard fit suits, I went searching and found some lovely ones at Marks & Spencer for just under £100 each – bargain as that is not much more than the hire price, but excellent quality as you’d expect from M&S! I think they all looked really smart on the day. Sergio wanted to stand out and so went for a grey suit from Alexandre at House of Fraser with the same waistcoat and cravat as the guys. At the time of planning, we had eight nieces and nephews (we have 11 now, number 12 due in July!), so we knew we wanted to include them somehow, especially the older ones. The eldest, Gabriel, was our little usher and did a fantastic job – he revelled in the idea of having such an important part in the wedding! His younger brother Noah of course had a very similar suit and tie and followed Gabriel around ‘helping’ with his usher duties. The three eldest girls, Mia, Amelia and Matilda, were my beautiful flower girls and adored being princesses for the day. Everything else fell into place quite quickly. I got lots of “but you can’t do all that yourself, you’ll get so stressed

pg 14

I had been so looking forward to the day and it was just lovely to have all our friends and family there to celebrate with us. We were so busy catching up with our guests, we didn’t get a chance to enjoy the buffet – so we ate when we got back to our room! The week after the wedding, we went on a minimoon to Hale, Cornwall, in our restored Beetle, camping. As a wedding gift, our lovely guests contributed towards our honeymoon fund and we booked our dream holiday in Borneo - our first day there will actually be our first wedding anniversary and we have booked a private dining gazebo on the beach at sunset…we can’t wait! With such a large family and so many nieces and nephews, all eyes are on us to have a baby now…

Bold, Beautiful and We all know the bride will be planning her outfit with meticulous detail in the months leading up to the wedding and there is no reason the mother of the bride can’t join in the fun too. After all you will be playing a very important role so need to be looking your best. With summer round the corner there is a plethora of choice out there. Whether you want a bright colour to celebrate the season or something a little more sedate, we are sure you will find something to make you look wonderful.

Sophisticated

We spoke to local expert Melissa Wheeler from Ambience of Colchester to bring you some top tips and to guide you through the (sometimes frustrating) process of choosing the perfect outfit. For the curvier figure, you should make sure the jacket is not too short but covers your hips to create a longer, more streamlined silhouette. If you are petite, then a more fitted shorter jacket can look stunning and will accentuate your trim figure. A long jacket worn over a straight dress is flattering for just about every type of figure and is brilliant for disguising a larger bottom or thick waist. A sleeveless shift dress with a jacket is always a popular choice because you can take the jacket off later in the evening when things begin to warm up. Take along a matching wrap to cover your shoulders if you are self-conscious about your upper arms. Alternatively, select an outfit with a short sleeved dress.

Dressing Tips:

Always select a hat that complements your outfit. Make sure it is worn on the crown not on the back of your head. Choose your outfit in a colour that suits your hair and complexion. Don’t be swayed by anyone else - you have to be happy with the final look.

TIP - Select an outfit that is comfortable - not too tight - as you will be wearing it for many hours, the same goes for your shoes. Accessorise with classic jewellery and simple make-up. And finally, try on the whole ensemble before the wedding and ask a friend to take a photograph, so you can see the final effect and make any adjustments if necessary in plenty of time.

The bold nature of this dress is not for everyone but on the right figure could look fantastic, it will certainly get you noticed. The final touch is a fascinator or hat to tie it all together. For more on this style and others go to : www.minuet-petite.co.uk

I adore the sophisticated lines of this dress. The jacket compliments it too and is ideal for British weddings as we never can tell what the weather will do! Create the look

Hair

Step 1

Put heated rollers into your hair to create movement and curl

Step 2

Back comb top to give height to crown. Use a soft brush as this won’t damage the hair.

Finishing Touches

For some of us the idea of a professional doing our hair and make up is the epitome of relaxation and pampering! However there are those that know what they want and would rather do it themselves. If you choose to get married abroad you may want to consider learning and practicing your wedding day hair and make up before you go, this way you are fully prepared and haven’t got to fly an extra person out to your destination. Read on for some expert DIY advice from Natalie Lupton from The Hair Secret.

Step 4

Take a medium size section of the pony tail, loop around your finger to create a loop, pin in to place at the base of your head. Do this until you have no hair left to pin. You will be left with a delicate bun shape.

Step 3

Pull hair to the side, use a small hair band or clips and secure into place.

Step 5

Finish with lots of hairspray to keep in place and gloss spray to create that shine.

Apply your chosen hair piece. We have used a comb by Leigh-Anne Mccague which was supplied By Airs and Graces of Berkhamsted

Make-up Top Tip

BASE

Make sure you get your eyebrows shaped before the big day as this will help make your look flawless.

Step1

Prep skin by applying a primer.

Finishing tips

Step2

Apply foundation. We have used a mineral powder by Jane Iredale. This is easy to apply and gives a beautiful finish. Apply a creamy concealer under the eyes, we used Bobbi Brown creamy under eye concealer.

Apply a shimmer to the top of your cheeks to high light your cheek bones. Under your eyebrows apply a shimmer to create a wide eye look. This will instantly give you an open eye. If you can get your eyelashes dyed before the big day, this will help frame your eyes. Apply a shimmer to your chest if you have a strapless gown, this will high light your collar bone.

Contact: EYES

Step 3

Apply a neutral colour all over the lids, then apply your main lid colour. We are using a shimmer which has a touch of pink in to bring out our brides natural skin tone.

Step 4

In the crease of your eye apply a soft brown creating a ‘c’ starting from the outside working in towards the eye. Repeat with a slightly darker brown and remember to blend.

Hair and Make up Natalie Lupton from The Hair Secret in Berkhamsted. www.thehairsecret.co.uk 01442 878449 Dress and hair pieces are from Airs and Graces in Berkhamsted. www.airsgraces.co.uk 01442 875849

Step 5

Using a brown gel liner, line the top of your eyes. If you want to add a smokey eye, line the bottom of the eye then use your finger to smudge it. Don’t make the line to harsh as this can age you if you’re not careful. Use a brown powder or use a product such as Jane Iredale bitty brow to colour in and set your brows.

Step 6

Apply lots of mascara. For a more dramatic look apply false strip lashes.

Step 7

Apply blusher to the apple of your cheeks. A good tip is to smile then apply.

Step 8

Apply a pink/nude lipstick then add a shimmer lip gloss over the top.

GET FIT FOR 12 Week SUMMER Challenge There is a lot of pressure these days to always look your best.Your wedding day is no exception. Lots of couples will feel the need to diet prior to the big day for fear of not being happy with the photographs. However crash dieting can sometimes have an adverse effect. With this in mind Kat and Grant from the team here at Brides etc decided to take on the USN 12 week challenge to try and get fit, loose weight and most importantly to stay that way!

Here is a little bit of information on what the challenge involves and how Kat and Grant are getting on 4 weeks into it. Check out page 79 for more information on the USN products they will be using.

A bit about the challenge

The challenge is designed to optimise your body transformation goals as well as helping you to change your lifestyle including breaking bad habits of a lifetime and creating a new fitter, healthier path. You will be supported by USN experts who will offer advice where they can. To find out more and to enter the challenge go to www.usn.co.uk

Kat why are you taking on the USN challenge?

I am one of those people that have always been unhappy with the way I look. Everyone has something they dislike about themselves but I struggle to be positive about my appearance. I have recently got to the point where enough is enough so when Grant suggested we do this I thought it was the perfect opportunity to get my butt in gear! I have a family wedding coming up this summer and couldn’t bear the thought of more awful wedding photos. I’m sure for brides and bridesmaids reading this you will be able to relate as so many of us dread the focus of the camera lens.

4 weeks In

I do enjoy exercise and don’t like to think I am a lazy person but by the time I get home from work I don’t normally have the energy to do anything else. Well that had to change when I took on this challenge. Since starting I have found that I actually have more energy. I put this down to the fact that I am exercising, sleeping better and eating well. I honestly thought the dramatic change in the way I eat would be the hardest part but funnily enough once you get into it, it is easy to stay away from junk food as you can feel the benefits. I have been doing a lot of different forms of exercise as I find that I can get bored quite easily. So I have been mixing it up with running, Pilates, swimming, badminton and fitness DVD’s. I never thought I would say this but it is so rewarding when you find yourself getting better at the exercises and clothes start to feel looser. When I first started doing Pilates I was useless but now I am really getting into it and it is starting to work a treat on toning those muscles!

pg 38

Grant why are you taking on the USN challenge?

I have always aspired to be in shape like the rest of my social circle and like Kat have never been truly satisfied with my appearance. Having lost the best part of 4 stone several years ago, I know how good it feels to feel like you are progressing towards your ideal image! With this in mind (and with my wedding coming up in September) I felt that now was the ideal time to really push myself to look the way I always wanted to look.

I know that like many soon-to-be grooms reading this, I want to look back on my wedding photos with real joy, not thinking “wow… the camera really does add 10 pounds!” I also want to be able to walk around with supreme confidence on the beach with my gorgeous wife Natalie, knowing that she loves the way I look too! Seeing the results from this challenge on others that have taken part has really inspired me to want to achieve the same level of success!

4 Weeks In

I have noticed big changes in the way I feel! I am sleeping better and more consistently and don’t feel the need to sleep most of the day like I used to! I have always been a fan of the gym, and try to go regularly. Lately though, due to wedding planning and other busy commitments, I haven’t been as regular at the gym as usual so this has been a bit of a hindrance. However, I am still exercising as best as I am able to and the improvements in my diet have shown as I am still able to lose the weight and change shape. Lot’s of my friends are noticing big changes in my stature and this really motivates me to keep going. I am noticing that my clothes are fitting better and I am seeing real reductions around my chest, stomach and legs. Overall I am enjoying the challenge and still allowing myself a cheat meal each week. I feel that the principles I am learning, I will keep as routine, which is going to be great for my long-term goals once the challenge has been completed! Don’t forget to check back next issue to see if Kat and Grant reached their goals!

Bride: Hana Mallett, 32 Groom: William (Will) Mallett, 28 Home: Saffron Walden Ceremony venue: Hedingham Castle Reception venue: The Tulip Marquee, Hedingham Castle Date: January 28th, 2012

Every newly married couple deserves a bit of luck. But, for Hana and Will, their fortune started when they won an all-expenses-paid wedding day! Their £12,000 big day was the prize in a raffle at Hedingham Castle which raised funds for the Helen Rollason Cancer Charity. So, with the help of the venue’s wedding planner, plus many suppliers who had donated their services as part of the prize, the couple were able to enjoy their dream day without the worry of a budget! Will and I started planning our big day after he proposed when we were travelling in Jordan. My dad is Bedouin so we were staying with a Bedouin family and their camels in Wadi Rum, Lawrence of Arabia country. As the sun set, we climbed the nearest rocky outcrop and Will proposed at the top! We went back to the camp and told our hosts and they performed a Bedouin ceremony of engagement for us. It was the most perfect day. We slept that night under the stars. We felt so lucky to win! We were having such trouble finding a venue with character to fit in with our budget so when we won it was marvellous. The wedding day is a wonderful memory in itself, but to win a wedding at such a beautiful venue was amazing! We did much of the planning ourselves and it was certainly a family affair. Even my grandparents were put to task and found us hundreds of vintage tea cups at car boot sales! Will designed the invitations and we both handmade the table plan, orders of ceremony, favours, confetti cones and bunting. Will’s sister made the cake and I made the 500 sugar flowers to go on it. The day before the wedding, we were at home until the evening as I needed to finish the sugar flowers and Will still had to write his speech! Will’s dad, sisters, their boyfriends and my friend from Germany all came over to help, but Will couldn’t write his speech with a house full so went to meet his best man in the pub instead. That night our ushers stayed with Will and I stayed at my parent’s house. Our theme was loosely Casablanca; English vintage meets North African spice and a mixture of our heritage and love of all things vintage and Arabic. Our table centres were silver Moroccan lanterns surrounded by the vintage china tea cups and pressed glass vases full of roses. Everyone was given a winter warmer of homemade plum brandy and my dad translated each of the guest’s name cards into Arabic. We both love old things, especially family photographs, and knew we wanted them to feature. We also wanted to incorporate items personal to us so we used an old family suitcase for the table plan and hung photographs of our

relatives’ wedding pictures next to the table lists. Hedingham Castle is such a beautiful venue, it didn’t need much dressing so we just added personal hints. It’s the perfect vintage backdrop. The day went so quickly, but was perfect. I have so many favourite moments, but we both loved the ceremony. It was held in the Keep of the Castle by candle light so was really romantic, albeit completely nerve-wracking! I think the highlight though was walking hand in hand across the moat bridge while our guests threw confetti and cheered. It was the celebration we had hoped for and it was lovely to see everyone smiling. We went to Norfolk for a couple of days straight after the wedding - and broke down on the way home which was very romantic - and then a few weeks later travelled around Sri Lanka, which was really amazing and we didn’t want to leave!

Helen Rollason Cancer Charity supports people living with cancer through pioneering research, drugs trials to develop new treatments and award-winning support centres. At the charity’s centre in Chelmsford, patients and their carers receive counselling and support. Patients can also have therapies, such as massage, that complement their medical treatment and reduce stress. The charity makes no charge for these services and relies on supporters - like the team at Hedingham Castle - to continue with this work. Angela Lodge, head of fundraising at Helen Rollason Cancer Charity, said: “We are very grateful to everyone at Hedingham Castle for the £1,500 raised through the raffle. Many congratulations to winners Hana and Will – we wish them lots of luck for the future.”

Bride: Alex Moore, 29 Groom: Andrew Willis, 31 Home: St Albans Ceremony venue: St Albans Registry Office Reception venue: North Hill Farm Date: August 13th, 2011

If you go down to the woods today... For relaxed couple Alex and Andy, celebrating their love has always been about the simple things in life. So when it came to their wedding, what mattered most was sharing it with the special people in their lives. With tipis, a tree house and a blue petticoat, this was a real summer celebration. Andy and I got together at a friends’ party 12 years ago when we were both at sixth form college. Who knew back then we would end up getting married! We were together about eight years before we moved in together and then got engaged about eight months before the wedding. The night Andy proposed to me was very personal and intimate. He’d cooked me a delicious dinner at home of steak wrapped in pancetta and blue cheese – a special meal we both love at our favourite restaurant, Darcy’s in St Albans. He popped the question in front of a roaring fire which was just so romantic. Although it was a surprise, we’d talked

pg 44

about marriage a lot so I knew it would be on the cards at some point but I had no idea he was going to do it that evening. I was over-the-moon with excitement. Our main priority of our wedding day was to share a sunny day with all our friends and family. We didn’t want anything too formal, just fun with good food and music so everyone could enjoy themselves. We didn’t feel we needed a long time to plan it so started searching for our venue straight away. We knew we also needed to do it on a budget and were keen to do as much as we could ourselves. When we thought about a venue, we wanted somewhere where the music didn’t have to finish at 11pm and where everyone would have the option to stay if they wanted to. We looked at several venues, but as we’re big fans of camping the flexibility at North Hill Farm was ideal. I planned the rest of the wedding myself with help

from my bridesmaids and family. We sourced all the individual suppliers and I actually really enjoyed the whole experience. There were lots of ideas we had along the way and things we discovered at wedding fayres and on the internet that helped us to create the day we wanted. We didn’t have very specific ideas so it meant we could be quite flexible along the way. There are so many details to plan in a wedding, though. We found sorting out the timing and calculating the catering were the hardest and we actually ended up with so much food left over everyone went home with a goodie bag of cake and flowers! We were so lucky to have so much help from family and friends. My uncle was our chauffer, my cousins helped organise all the catering on the day, friends and family all made cakes and food and helped us to decorate and clean up. A family friend arranged all the flowers and I had the most beautiful arrangement of bright summery colours in my bouquet; it was perfect for the occasion. I tried on a few dresses, but fell in love with the lovely blue petticoat and vintage feel of my Candy Anthony dress. The night before our wedding, we were at the tipi tents until late afternoon with lots of our friends and family decorating the venue and stocking the bar. I left and spent the evening with my parents and bridesmaids watching Father of The Bride and undergoing some lastminute beauty preparation. Andy stayed at North Hill Farm with some of his best men and a few of our guests who had arrived to camp the night before. We got married at the registry office at 12pm. From there, we all went back to North Hill Farm where we had an afternoon tea as our sit down lunch, then later

in the evening we had a delicious hog roast. For music, we had created our own play lists for background music throughout the day and in the evening we had a fantastic Cuban band called Tumbao Tivoli and then a friend DJ’d into the early hours. The majority of our guests camped overnight or stayed in local B&Bs. We spent the wedding night in a tree house at North Hill Farm which was like a dream. In the morning, we BBQ’d bacon and sausages for everyone. I think our wedding day was quite personal to us, we wanted something that reflected our personalities, rather than following the traditional route. Everyone commented on how much they’d enjoyed it. It was just as we’d pictured it would be. Neither of us wanted a very formal wedding, we just wanted a huge celebration with all our family and friends, something that everyone would remember. Having a wedding is such a huge expense that we wanted to spend the money on things that really mattered to us and it made it even more special that so many of our friends and family helped out with various part of the day, like the cakes, flowers, and setting up the venue. It was amazing to share our special day with all our friends and family, but my favourite moment was holding Andy’s hand and saying our vows. The only hitch on the day was me forgetting to give the best men the plan of the day so nothing really ran to schedule! We enjoyed a three-night minimoon in Somerset at Orchard Farm after I won a voucher at Glastonbury last summer to spend at canopy and stars. We’re hoping to have a longer honeymoon this year for our first anniversary. In the meantime, we’re enjoying married life and decorating an extension on our house.

Expert Opinion Local florist Tanya shares her wisdom on making the most of British summer flowers.

• The world is your oyster (or garden!) if you have planned a summer wedding. Most English flowers bloom during the summer season so you will be spoilt for choice both for colours and varieties. •F or eco-friendly weddings, summer means you can pick English (sometimes organic!) grown flowers for your wedding in the knowledge that they have had a very short journey to the florist. • To get the summer groove go for a relaxed, informal style with plenty of flowering grasses and daisy shapes such as matriciaria, zinnia, dahlia and scabious in bright colours. • A more sophisticated alternative would be massed; one colour bunches of peonies or hydrangea. • Traditional style would include old English roses, larkspur and sweet peas in a mix of pastel colours. •D on’t forget scent – sweet peas, lavender, flowering mint, old English roses and stocks are all highly fragrant. Top Tip Add an additional 10% to your initial budget. It is always best to plan for those hidden extras and little emergencies that may crop up.

Be a smart bride Talking about money is not the fun part of planning your wedding, but it is a necessity if you don’t want to start married life in debt. We have designed the guide opposite to help you allocate money to everything from the dress to the venue. Follow our advice below and you can’t go wrong. Good luck!

Work out your budget

Research! Make sure you have a look at a variety of dresses, cakes, florists etc. This way you can get an idea of what the cost should be. If you are booking a number of things with one company, don’t be shy, ask for a bespoke quotation. It could save you a few pounds. When you decide to book, make sure you get something in writing and read the small print. Get it clear in your head when deposits and balance payments are due and don’t forget VAT and service charges.

The first thing to think about is to discuss (realistically) what you can save up and afford. We know it is easy to get carried away with designer dresses and heavenly venues, but they are no use if you can’t pay for them. So use our guide opposite and jot down what you think you will need to spend on each thing, this should give you a starting point.

Who is paying for what? We know this is an awkward question, but if your parents do want to pay for parts of the wedding it is best to know at the beginning so you are not worrying about it later. It also means that you can work out how much you need to save.

For further help Write down what you’re spending It is a simple idea, but an effective one. Without realising, you could be spending £100s on little bits. Start a spreadsheet and just add onto it what you are paying and for what, this way you can see quickly if you are over budget on something and you can rein it in. How about setting up a wedding bank account? May sound a little extreme, but this way you can put the money you have saved into this account, pay the bills from it and you will always know where you are.

pg 60

If you want some more advice, we recommend these books. With all this help, you will be the most organised bride! • Planning your Wedding, £7.99 www.confetti.co.uk

• The Step-by-Step Guide to Planning Your Wedding, £8.99 www.amazon.com

We also like the idea of keeping a notebook with all your lists/ideas/reminders so that everything is in one place.

Bride: Kathryn Bannell Groom: Jeremy Taylor Home: Cornwall Destination: Cayman Islands Date: July 28th, 2011

TAKING THE PLUNGE Images courtesy of: davidwolfephotography.com

in Paradise

As well as being over-the-moon after taking their vows on a luxury yacht in the beautiful Cayman Islands, Jeremy and Kathryn were also over the side, straight into the crystal clear Caribbean.

For every couple planning a traditional local church ceremony, there is another yearning for a completely different setting for their special day. An Alpine village with a backdrop of lakes and mountains perhaps; the idyllic unspoilt and exotic beauty of Polynesia; or maybe a historic, vibrant, romantic city such as Paris or Rome. As this is our summer issue, we thought we’d provide a little inspiration if blue skies, tropical sun, swaying palms and turquoise waters feature in your wedding dreams. Jeremy tells us how he and Kathryn tied the knot “somewhere” off the coast of Grand Cayman and, as you’ll see, they really “splashed out” in more ways than one!

pg 64

Cornish couples are lucky enough to live in one of the most dramatic settings imaginable for a perfect wedding day. Fantastic beaches, rugged coastlines and some equally impressive venues – in fact, the only factor we can’t rely on is the weather!

It was this love of the Cornish landscape that brought us here from the South East just six months ago when my fiancé swapped her GP practice in Hampshire for one in Cornwall. I had proposed while we were out running together at New Year. Kathryn was already short of breath and I correctly assumed it was easier to gasp ‘yes’ than put up a reasoned argument. Move the clock forward ten months and we now spend too much time in wetsuits, the kids are experts at tide times and we drive cars full of sand. In that short period, Kathryn has found a new partnership near Bude; her three children have successfully made the transition to

different schools, while we have exchanged a railway line at the bottom of the garden for picture postcard views of the Cornish coast. The icing on the cake took a little more organising however - a romantic wedding day in the Cayman Islands… Our decision to travel overseas to get married wasn’t taken lightly. In the end, despite the wonderful setting of our new life in Cornwall, we wanted to treat the whole family to a holiday of a lifetime as part of the wedding adventure. With the weeks running out before Kathryn started her new job and my diary filling up, we started searching for our dream location. We must have bought every travel magazine in the village shop before I suggested Grand Cayman. I had visited the island to write a wreck-diving feature and knew it was the perfect location for combining a family break and an amazing wedding. We only had a week to spare and cramming it all in as we settled in Cornwall was going to be a tall order.

With boxes lying unpacked in the hallway and school holidays threatening, we decided to take the strain out of the whole affair and use a wedding planning company. Celebrations have been putting the icing on the cake for couples in the Cayman Islands since 1988, including assorted celebrities and well-known faces. Both Kathryn and I have been married before and had already decided on a simple ceremony. So instead of a traditional beach location, we asked Celebrations, one of Grand Cayman’s best wedding organisers, to find a luxurious boat to let us tie the knot at sea. And while the children knew they were going on holiday, we had deliberately neglected to tell them that we were getting married at the same time!

For those of you who didn’t listen carefully in geography classes, the Cayman Islands is still a British Overseas Territory, a short flight south of Cuba in the western Caribbean. Originally discovered by Columbus in 1503, nowadays it is best known partly as a centre for international finance and also a haven for tourism, blessed by one of the most glorious beaches in the Caribbean, if not the world – Seven Mile Beach. It is also one of the greatest places in the world to dive and enjoy a long list of water sports. The clear, warm water lures divers from around the globe, while children can snorkel for brightly coloured fish just yards from the shoreline. You can swim with huge friendly stingrays, get up close and personal with giant turtles and the prehistoric Blue iguana, as well as enjoy some breathtaking Caribbean scenery. Most holidaymakers stay along Seven Mile Beach and we obviously wanted somewhere special to enjoy our special moment. The team at Celebrations suggested The Caribbean Club – Seven Mile Beach’s most luxurious semi self-catering development. The

apartments are simply huge, most with views of the ocean and every conceivable extra including a lovely restaurant and infinity pool. We arrived at Owen Roberts Airport in Georgetown five days before the big event. So by the time we stepped aboard the 42ft Cayman Illusion, run by Cayman Luxury Charters, we were already relaxed and sporting a suitable tan. The original plan had been to marry the day after we landed from an 11 hour flight – a very bad idea indeed! The Illusion is an air-conditioned dreamboat, polished to perfection for the biggest day of our lives. The children seemed more interested in the flatscreen TV in

pg 65

the stateroom, rather than the incredible scenery whizzing by at 20 knots outside! We must be one of the few couples who actually have no idea of exactly where we were married. Our brief to Cayman Luxury Charters was to take us ‘somewhere’ off the coast. And so it was that at 7.05pm on July 18, ‘somewhere’ off Starfish Point, Grand Cayman, Kathryn and I took our vows. Kathryn read me some words of her own, while I recited Balloon, by Graeme King. Ten-year-old Rosie then managed a faultless rendition of the Owl and the Pussycat, before we released a bundle of red balloons into the sunset. It was the most relaxed, emotionally charged moment, with just the five of us, plus Kathryn’s mother Rosemary on the passenger list. Within minutes of me slipping a gold band on Mrs Taylor’s finger, the children had stripped off and were diving in to the water. As they circled the boat looking for starfish, we decided to take the plunge too and jumped off the bow in full wedding gear. The only adventure we didn’t have time to do was a trip to Little Cayman, a paradise coral bay just 40 minutes away by twin otter. That is a treat we have in store for our next trip. The Cayman Islands adventure is still a favourite topic of conversation around the kitchen table. The fish the children caught have grown larger, the pirate ship they sailed on even more scary. For Kathryn and I, we have a lifetime of memories safely stored away. And every time we walk on a Cornish beach, we keep an eye out for a bunch of red balloons…

GET FIT FOR 12 Week SUMMER Challenge

THE PRODUCTS Following on from the introduction to the USN 12 Week Challenge (see page 38) we thought it would be a good idea to explain the products that will be used. There is a lot of myth and concern surrounding supplements and health shakes but if you use them correctly they can go a long way to supporting a healthy diet and fitness regime.

Grant and Kat will be using the following products to help them achieve their goals.

Diet Fuel Ultralean:

Trim excess calories by replacing snacks with a Diet Fuel Ultralean shake Why use this? It is a balanced meal replacement that protects muscle tissue, stabilises blood sugar levels and increases fat burning. Diet Fuel Ultralean is a low-GI drink with a high satiety level and is packed with essential nutrients. Grant says: Easy to mix and has a great taste even when mixed with water.

Protein Dessert:

Allows you to indulge and diet at the same time! This products contains a premium protein blend that offers eight hours of sustained amino acid release to protect and tone muscle tissue and burn fat while you sleep. It is low in fat and sugar free. Kat says: This product is great if, like me you fancy something sweet after dinner. I mix it with water and take it after I exercise in the evening, its gets all those important ingredients back into your body that are vital to help tone muscle. It is chocolate flavoured too so you can still get your fix!

A few Top Tips from USN: Remember, when it comes to losing weight, you need to take baby steps. The only healthy way to lose weight is to do it slowly as you do not want to shock your body. If you do it the quick-fix way, you will probably end up unhealthy, with a slower metabolism and picking up weight again fast. Try to be realistic about your diet. Keep it simple and you will be able to go the full 12 weeks. Educate yourself regarding weight loss and follow a healthy style of living. Try to be innovative and positive regarding your diet and lifestyle. Exercise is important because it speeds up your metabolism. Basal metabolic rate (BMR) is a rate that gives you an indication of how fast your body burns calories while you rest. If you exercise, your BMR increases so that you burn more calories throughout the day. Exercise causes your body not only to burn calories, but also to mobilise stored fat (before fat can be used as fuel, it must be mobilised). Muscles burn calories for energy 18 times faster than fat. By increasing your muscle activity moderately, your body’s metabolism will increase and you will burn more calories naturally each day.

Xedra-Cut:

Raise your metabolic rate and boost your energy with Xedra-Cut Capsimax, USN’s trusted thermogenic fat burner. Xedra-Cut Capsimax uses a new triple action fat-burning formula that turns existing fat into energy, burns fat for longer and reduces the likelihood of fat cell regeneration.

CLA:

A fast-acting weight loss supplement that promotes a lean toned physique. CLA is a ‘wonder nutrient’ found naturally in a wide variety of foods. It has been scientifically proven to inhibit the process that causes fat deposition in the body, especially in the abdominal area, as it encourages the body to burn stored fat for energy.

Make an Entrance Your wedding day transport can be functional or something that will wow your guests. So first off, you need to decide whether you simply want to catch everyone’s attention or whether there is slightly more to it than that. There are a few parts of your day where you may want help getting yourself and your guests from point A to point B.

THINGS TO CONSIDER • How will the bride, bridesmaids and flower girls get to the wedding venue? • How will the groom, best men and ushers get to the wedding venue? • How will the bride and groom get to the reception venue? • How will the wedding guests get to the reception venue? If your wedding ceremony and reception is taking place at one location, such as a hotel, the bride or groom may choose to get ready there. This means you just need to hire transport to get the bride or groom to the venue in time for the ceremony. We like the idea that once you are married you can go off for a 10 minute drive to get some time to yourselves and to take some fantastic pictures. If you are having your ceremony at a church or separate location to the wedding reception, there may be more planning involved. However, for the groom, this could be a chance for a childhood dream to come true. After all, what little boy didn’t dream of driving a super-car? If these choices are not for you, you may consider a classic or vintage style. A more traditional choice, there are a plethora of styles on offer, from Rolls Royce to Bentleys and Mercedes. If you want something a little more retro, how about a VW Beetle or Camper? Perfect if the sun is shining! For a true Hollywood arrival, you may want to consider a Limo. You may be worried about your guests getting from the church to the reception venue. If you want everything to run smoothly and all your guests to arrive at the same time, we recommend a bus (no, we don’t mean your local number 10 from the end of the high street). You can hire an old school red London bus or maybe something a little older with a touch of vintage. Whatever you decide, we are sure your guests will be pleased they don’t have to worry about it. If a lot of your guests don’t know each other, it is also a great way of throwing everyone together to get chatting. By the time they all arrive at the reception venue, they will be relaxed and ready to party! Barry, from The Expeditional, says: “There are a number of practical advantages of hiring a bus. It eases parking issues, ensures all your guests arrive in time and together and the real advantage is that people get to travel together and socialise. The bus enhances the experience of being together and creates a really nice atmosphere on board and is a memorable event in itself. It also provides a smooth t r ansit ion bet ween t he ceremony and the reception.” www.theexpeditional.com

Grooms

pg 84

Arrive in style, but how will you choose? These days there is such a wealth of choice for your wedding day transport. From vintage to retro to classic, there is something to suit everyone’s taste. To help you decide we have gathered a few of our favourites, don’t forget to check out the competition to win your wedding day transport on page 83.

Top Tips Don’t forget to try and tie in your transport with the theme of your wedding, otherwise your photos could look a bit odd! Ask the company you hire from to colour co-ordinate the colour of the ribbon with the bride’s bouquet. Have a bottle of bubbly ready for when you leave the ceremony so you can both relax and enjoy a few minutes of alone time.

We spoke to local wedding car specialists Adrian Emberson from Vintage Dreams and Paula from Big Day Cars to get a couple of your questions answered. How far should we book in advance? The best cars book early so we suggest transport should be one of the first things you do after fixing the date and venue, along with some of the other priorities, such as photographer etc. Adrian, Vintage Dreams How long do we have the car for? From pick-up until arrival at the reception, when the photographer says he is finished with the cars. At Vintage Dreams, we don’t have a time limit, so long as it’s within reason. Adrian, Vintage Dreams

Vintage Dreams “We started the wedding car business in year 2000 and we have covered so many weddings and made so many new friends. Every wedding is different and we expect this will continue. We are just as enthusiastic as when we began all those years ago. “All cars are fitted with a clock to assist a nervous cride to arrive at the church on time, plus CD players for a little background music in the cars. “We often take the bridesmaids to the church and double back for the bride. This saves the expense of having two cars and both cars on offer are ideal for this.” Contact 01206 212443 www.vintagedreams.co.uk

www.churchillsupercars.com

What are the advantages of hiring transport from a company rather than using your own vehicles to make your way to the venue? You get to relax and concentrate on all the other things you have to do on the day, you don’t need to worry about traffic and planning your route and if you need that drink to steady your nerves you can without a problem! Also no cleaning and prepping cars the day before as they are all dressed and ready to go. Paula, Big Day Cars What vehicles do you suggest for getting the bride and parents, four bridesmaids, a flower girl and page boy to the venue? For larger bridal parties a limo can be ideal. Depending on your numbers you can get them from seven seaters up to 16 seaters. They can be in the form of a classic or vintage limousine, an American stretch limo or a stretch hummer. Another alternative is a minibus, not quite so glamorous but ideal for family members. Paula, Big Day Cars

big day cars “Big Day Cars provide quality wedding car hire at affordable prices. We are a family-run business based in the Medway towns. We strive to provide you with a personal friendly service to meet your needs and make your big day special, whatever the occasion. “We cover the whole of Medway, Kent, London and the south east. Our cars are perfect for transporting you in style to your chosen venue and they are all driven by uniformed chauffeurs.

The Expeditional

“Our wedding cars come with air conditioning and leather interior. Ribbons, bows and flowers are included in the price and are available in an assortment of colours to match your chosen colour scheme. We also offer complementary champagne for the bride and groom.”

“Our wedding service can transport up to 72 people per bus, so plenty of room for you and your guests. On your special day, you want everything to go as planned so you can customise our services with drop-off points and pick-ups to suit you. The appearance of the bus can be tailored, all hires come with ribbons. We offer personalised destination blinds and on-board floral decorations, too. The bus comes with a conductor who will ensure everything runs smoothly on the day. “

FROM STUNNING SUNSETS...

...TO CHIC CITIES

For some of you, sitting on a plane for hours on end is not the ideal start to a honeymoon. As so many of you have been telling us you want honeymoon destinations closer to home, we have found a couple of our favourites. We have also tried to tie in a bit of variety – so you can search the cities, soak up the sun, try delicious cuisine and then party all night…if you want! Dip your toes in the Aeolian Islands If you fancy a spot of island hopping, with every destination different from the last, then this trip is for you. Think glamorous, rustic and stylish – the Aeolian Islands have something to offer everyone. Start off at the stunning island of Panarea, then onto the charming island of Salina and top it all off with a fluorescent lava display on the island of Stromboli. Here’s what you can look forward to: • Chic, stylish hotels (this is Italy, after all) • Snorkelling off shimmery black coves • Sampling just-caught seafood • Walks through picturesque villages • Witnessing the intense lava displays of active volcano • The bays of San Vito lo Capo for dramatic limestone bays • Swap sun for snow and head to the slopes of Mount Etna A close up on the islands Ancient grandeur in Palermo Palermo is an unspoilt, undiscovered gem of a city. With its crumbling architecture, century-old churches and vibrant eateries, you can soak up the history or the sun! You will stay at an elegant hotel and be shown all the best spots by an expert guide. From surfing in the sheltered bays of San Vito lo Capo to discovering colourful markets, you certainly won’t be bored.

Lush greenery in Salina Here is where you can relax and get on with some serious chilling out time. This is the greenest and most laidback island. Why not zip around the rugged hills on the back of a Vespa? Then head down to the beautiful bay of Rinella to soak up the sun and taste the local cuisine. Perfection! Party all night on Panarea This is your next stop, nicknamed “la dolce” (the sweet one). It is the most exclusive island, buzzing with chic bars and restaurants with an effortlessly cool, rustic vibe. You will stay at ultra modern, luxurious Raya Hotel. From here it is only a short walk to spectacular, secluded coves for those romantic evening strolls. Stromboli: “The Volcano Island” Your last stop on your island tour. This tipi-shaped island is home to Europe’s most active volcano and this is where the magic happens. You can take a sunset boat ride and see for yourself the roaring eruptions and spectacular natural fireworks. We think this would make a phenomenal end to your Mediterranean honeymoon.

The facts: Price: From £1,999 per person (based on two sharing) including flights from London, private transfers and all accommodation. Location: Aeolian Islands, Sicily, Italy Flight Time: From 3 hours When to go: April – October

WHERE MEETS

LUXURY

THE OCEAN Since last summer, we have been bringing you a selection of our favourite UK honeymoon destinations. This issue, we bring you an extra special location. We know for some couples, a long honeymoon far away is all you want but we also appreciate that for couples with families this may not be an option. Don’t fret, we are sure you will love this luxury gem and if you don’t there is plenty more the great British Isles has to offer, just keep reading! The largest of the Channel Islands, Jersey is truly special. A beautifully unspoiled landscape, striking coastline, golden sands and a unique blend of British and French influences combine to create a haven for travellers. Whether you want to relax on the beaches, take to the water or explore the rugged coastline, there is something to keep everyone happy. Imagine a combination of panoramic Atlantic views, the finest seafood, the most interesting heritage and stunning countryside and you have the very essence of Jersey. The Atlantic Hotel & Ocean Restaurant As one of the top hotels in the British Isles and a proud member of Small Luxury Hotels of the World, the combination of timeless elegance and secluded location makes The Atlantic Hotel the perfect Channel Islands hideaway on an island rich in culture, heritage and natural beauty. The Accommodation A guestroom at The Atlantic Hotel is decorated in elegant understated colours, with opulent marble bathrooms. Light oak and satin-polished chrome add stylish touches, while full height windows and balconies make the most of the great views. Also on offer are Garden Studios and two luxury suites, perfect for a romantic honeymoon. We recommend the Atlantic Suite which has been designed with luxury in mind!

The Cuisine Ocean Restaurant is a tranquil fine dining restaurant which showcases modern British cuisine using the best Jersey produce. Ocean has retained a Michelin Star since 2007 as well as four rosettes in the AA Restaurant Guide, placing it in the top rank of restaurants in the British Isles. Seeing as this is your honeymoon, you may as well indulge yourself. We suggest pan-roasted Jersey scallops, Vichy carrot puree, motra caviar followed by pot roast cannon of corn fed chicken, seared foie gras, sautéed wild mushrooms, sweetcorn gnocchi, with truffle foam. Then, if you can manage it, finish off with nougatine of raspberry, vanilla cream and raspberry sorbet. The Facilities The Palm Club offers guests a relaxing and inspiring environment in which to unwind. You can take a dip in the swimming pool, relax in the spa pool and saunas or if you fancy getting active you can have a game of tennis in the grounds. If you want to try your hand at golf, Jersey is a good place to start as you will be spoilt for choice. From La Moye with its panoramic ocean views to Les Mielles in the heart of the islands conservation area, golf has never seemed so pleasurable. Local Activities To make the most of all Jersey has to offer during your honeymoon, you need to get out and about. How about a day trip to Elizabeth Castle? Accessible by foot during low tide or by ferry when the tide is in, you can soak up some local history while enjoying the views. If this isn’t your style, La Mare Vineyard might be more up your street. A wine lover’s paradise, you can tour the estate, learn the methods and taste it at the end, too. Something we must mention is the beaches. From the rocky cliffs in the north to the golden sandy shoreline in the south, Jersey is blessed with miles of stunning coastline which you must take time to explore. Prices start from £80 per person per night including breakfast with seasonal offers available. Upgrade to half-board for £55 per person.
