jokingly tells an unnamed friend they should ride their motorcycle into the pit. After realizing it probably wouldn’t fit in the door, that idea died. Unbeknownst to us, someone else bets our friend $100 that he wouldn’t do it. Lo and behold, I look up from playing mid song and there he is, in the pit, on a motorcycle, revving his engine. He exits the pit and venue, and everything is chill...until the security guard from day 1 shows back up and tackles our friend off of his motorcycle. Not one other security guard cared, but this moron had to be a big man and prove himself. John stops drumming because he sees the commotion (all of our friends breaking shit, whooping ass) jumps off stage and joins the fray. We all follow suit. Security gets what they deserved, the show unfortunately gets shut down. An insane backyard show with Foundation, Bracewar, Tigers Jaw (Earth Crisis and Bane were supposed to play but cops shut it down after Foundation) & 1000+ people happens as a result and makes the front page of the newspaper. Franz Lyons: Backtrack; I been friends with them from the beginning and will be their friend for the 50yr old version reunion release too. One time for some reason before I had much confidence in myself they asked me to play the bass on a US tour far before I had the necessary skills but practicing a whole lot with them and also their amount of patience made the whole thing tight. Thanks for taking me in and teaching me something new.
David Jacox: The Sound & Fury incident - You may have heard of the motorcycle incident at Sound & Fury. Here is the full story. After the van breaking down and being stranded in Oakley, Kansas with Fire & Ice for over 48 hours, the loaner car breaking down going to the rental place, and driving two separate rental cars for 36 hours straight, we made it to Sound & Fury. Now, there is a direct incident that set up the infamous motorcycle debacle. Naysayer was in the parking lot and an overzealous security guard tried to bumrush his way into their van under the suspicion they were “drinking alcohol”, and pepper sprayed one of the band members. A squad of people were rolling to whoop ass, but the promoters promised he wouldn’t be at the fest the rest of the weekend if everyone calmed down. To respect the fest, everyone let it go. FAST FORWARD TWO DAYS: last day of the fest. Someone
Somehow a rumor that the man on the motorcycle was Davey Havok gets started. Pictures and videos surface of the entire incident and get posted all over the internet. The tour continued. And that is the full oral history of the motorcycle incident.
Kevin Kozlowski: In 2012 I was working a shitty dead end job for minimum wage. My childhood home was being foreclosed on. I was completely unhappy and directionless and needed something else. That spring I was given the opportunity to go along with backtrack on a pretty insane tour with Cold World headlining. At the time I thought it would just be a sort of one time thing. Take a little time off and travel with my friends. My job wasn’t really cool with me taking several weeks off so I did the extremely mature thing and walked into my bosses office to quit. A few days after that we were on our way. That summer was insane and one of the best of my life. After that tour ended I went out with another band for a bit and then joined back up with backtrack which basically snowballed into living in the BT van for a year. After all of that I was dropped off at my girlfriends apartment with basically a duffel bag and a few hundred bucks to my name but oddly
enough I felt better about my life than I had ever did before. I’m now married and have a career that I enjoy and I can honestly say that neither of those things would have been very likely had I not figured my life out that year. I wasn’t even trying to write something super serious but that’s just how it came out from da fucken heart. A lot of extremely funny events unfolded. Some of which may be international crimes. We all walked around for a solid 6 months in fear of getting spanked. I’ll save the rest for the commemorative DVD. I love the bone boys more than I can put into words!!!!!
him out of ears length from the rest of us. Suddenly another cop comes over to the passenger side window and tells us if anyone in here is carrying drugs hand it over now otherwise we can just wait for the drug dogs, who were on their way, to show up. We obviously denied having anything so the cop said “alright we’ll wait then” and walked away. We all slowly turned back at Chris who was pretty pale at this point, let out a huge sigh, and took out a prescription bottle full of weed. He then proceeds to start eating it. After he finally finishes it all, John comes back to the van and starts the car. He turns around and tells us that the police thought he was a Mexican drug dealer named Jose Lopez who is currently on the loose and that’s why they were giving him such a hard time. They were going to bring drug dogs to make sure Jose Lopez wasn’t smuggling more drugs throughout the country. We all once again looked at Chris who now looked like he was ready to commit suicide.
Ronie Singh: This is going to sound cliché but my most memorable Backtrack moment is the first show. Not because I booked it but because it was a rebirth of a NYHC scene that had been missing since I became a hardcore kid. The first show was amazing, I had never seen a band get that great of a reaction on their first show. All of our friends were moshing and singing along and we immediately knew we had a band that was gonna literally go places. New York had a young new band that was going to tour the country and even the world that sounded like the NYHC of the late 80’s. My best friends being in the band definitely made it feel like we were all a part of something special. Through their touring I also met a lot of my best friends around the country. Love you guys and thank you!
John Scanlon: One of the most memorable experiences rolling with Backtrack was when we were pulled over on the way to Syracuse for one of those Reaper Records New Years Day shows. Chris was carrying a bunch of weed on him so he was stressing a bit. Cop came over to the window and took John’s license, walked to his cop car then came back to the van. Asked John to step out of the van and start questioning
Martin Stewart: Booking a tour with a band that you’ve never met before can feel a lot like being set up on a blind date. Your mutual friends talk them up, you hear stories of their greatness from your peers; but there’s always that slight chance, despite all those positive reinforcements, that you just won’t enjoy your meeting. I’ll never forget arriving at the airport in Germany to start a month-long European journey in extremely close quarters with a group of 5 guys I had never met. We made our introductions, everything was formal & then Chris Smith says with a huge smile on his face “do you wanna go to the airport bar?”... the rest is history. That was one of the most fulfilling months of my life, not only because I had found true friendship in 5 new people that would last an eternity, but also because of the new life breathed into me from the music & energy these guys were creating on stage, which I was fortunate enough to witness each night. The amount of brain cells I’ve slaughtered with The Kids™ is worth every insane memory that we created together in the countless nights we’ve spent together on the road. From sharing stages across the world, to shooting ourselves in the tongue with air soft guns, to watching countless sunrises while listen to our favorite songs, to regretfully sampling all forms of local libations on international soil, to games of bloody knuckles at 5 am, to hotel parties, wrestling matches, drinking games, and countless other unspeakable stories... I’m BACKTRACK. I am SUE (ZOO).
