Bridges Academy Information and Registration Form Join us for the 2019 Summersession Adventures in Tie Dye! Keekly Chaisson
Do you like being creative? Playing with color? Making messes while doing crafts? Learning new skills? Then this is the class for you! In this course, we’ll be introduced to a variety of tying and dyeing techniques, including Japanese shibori (think blue and white geometric patterns), traditional American tie dye (think rainbow stripes and spirals), and ice dye (think watercolor on fabric). We’ll practice each technique on multiple materials, and by the end of the week you will have created many t-shirts, bandanas, and reusable grocery bags, as well a beach towel and a wall-hanging or sarong! On the first day of class, we will work with indigo (the same blue dye used for dyeing blue jeans) as we learn the basics of dyeing folds. Indigo-dyed items will fade with time, but just like with your jeans, this will happen more slowly if you wash the items in cold water. We will use fiber-reactive dyes for the next four days of projects — these dyes are truly permanent dyes — and after your project is washed once in hot water once, it will not fade or bleed! A huge variety of fiber-reactive colors will be available to all students for their amazing creations.

Bridges Academy Information and Registration Form Join us for the 2019 Summersession Concept Art Boot Camp Amy Faigin
It’s time for another round of Concept Art Boot Camp! From movies to comic books, video games and stage productions, concept art is an essential part of visual storytelling. In this boot camp, we’re going to do four independent, one-week courses focusing on essential aspects of concept art in order to bring your creative endeavor to the next level. Students will analyze, develop, and pitch their own designs. These classes can be taken all together, or students can select only the ones that interest them the most. The materials fee for this course covers all the basic drawing tools needed, as well as valuable research materials such as concept art books, so that we can study how industry veterans create their iconic works. Students are permitted to bring their own drawing materials if they have a preference. Digital art is also permitted if students feel confident working with digital tools. Week 1: Character Edition What makes a character compelling? A hero heroic or a villain villainous? In this boot camp we will be looking at characters critically; what choices were made in their design elements in order to understand how they fit into their stories, and what makes them so memorable and meaningful. This boot camp emphasizes costume and shape design in order to help characters connect to stories and generate emotional impact. Week 2: Monster Edition Maybe something goes bump in the night; maybe it’s something more than just a bump. Is the monster in your closet or rampaging in the city streets? From Godzilla to Gremlins, this boot camp studies the monsters of media, how we visually designate friend from foe, and what makes our favorite creatures so dynamic and engaging. Students will bring their own creatures to life, metaphorically speaking (we do not have the technology to do so literally). Week 3: Magical and Mechanical Science fiction and fantasy take us places we couldn’t even conceive in our dreams. Travel from Eorzea to Tatooine, exploring the designs and the choices that lead to them. In this boot camp, students will journey to fantastic worlds and learn how to build those very worlds, transporting audiences to somewhere fantastic of their own design. Students will study shape design and thematic elements in order to create cohesive environments, props, and populations for a science fiction or fantasy universe.

In this boot camp, students will explore the iconic and fantastic devices that beloved characters have relied upon to succeed in their missions, gain an understanding of the design choices that were made, and design their own fantastic props, vehicles, and macguffins.

Bridges Academy Information and Registration Form Join us for the 2019 Summersession Noir, Revisited Lucien Holmes
Radio drama, like steam engines and porkpie hats, are — though all but gone — an intrinsic part of the fabric of American history. In the relatively short interval between Marconi’s magic invention and the advent of a television in every home, radio was entertainment; radio was king. Hundreds of radio series dominated the airwaves every night. Shows, like the TV sitcoms that would follow in their wake, relied upon formulas but kept audiences loyal. We will revisit this “Golden Age” and create our own radio drama. Our resources include advice from the late but legendary writer Fran Striker, excerpts from Leonard Maltin’s Great American Broadcast, and what we learn about scriptwriting from classics like Rocky Jordan, Sam Spade, and Gunsmoke. Pyrography — derived from the Greek pur (fire) and graphos (writing) — has been around since fire itself. While there isn’t hard evidence, it’s quite likely that cavemen etched the walls of their caves with fire sticks. So if you would like to go back to the raw art of burning designs into things, then this is the class for you! During our week together we will learn about the different techniques involved in pyrography, as well as looking at how far these techniques can be pushed to create stunning pieces of art. Each student will receive a wood-burning pen kit to use for the week and that they will get to take home after our class. Over the week we will complete several projects using our kits and different types of wood materials, including plaques, frames, boxes, and so forth.

Bridges Academy Information and Registration Form Join us for the 2019 Summersession Sci-Fi & Fantasy Cinema Club Tyler Peck
If you love science fiction and fantasy films, then this Summersession will be super fun! From E.T. to Avatar, we will be exploring how different generations have looked at the sci-fi & fantasy genres. This year, for the first time, we will be opening up to films that stray into the supernatural and horror genres but are still considered sci-fi & fantasy, as well. The days will be structured like a compare and contrast-style screening series workshop. We will watch two movies each day, which will be based around a particular theme (e.g. time travel, alien invasion, etc.), and then discuss, critique, and analyze the pros and cons of each within the major categories of direction, writing, acting, cinematography, score, sound design, editing, production design, and VFX. How was each film distinctly similar and/or different from the other relative to the time in which it was conceived? One movie per day will thus focus on how contemporary cinema is presenting sci-fi and fantasy in film, and the other will instead look at how past generations have addressed those same genres. Since sci-fi and fantasy were such dominant film genres in the 1980s, we will be primarily focusing on that era as our “past generation” (although we will now open up to ‘70s and ‘90s films for the first time), whereas our “contemporary cinema” will be anything after the year 2000, as it was a major turning point in both technological and cinematic advancements. Here are just a few examples of the kinds of films we may watch: Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Firestarter, The Witch, The Dark Knight, The Neverending Story, Minority Report, Another Earth, and Under the Skin. Oh, and did I forget to mention that I will be providing both popcorn and movie candy everyday for your movie-going enjoyment?! Let’s watch some great movies and learn about the art of film criticism along the way!
