What ever Happen to Class? Venting about Fashion By: Carly Sinclair “I have nice stuff, I just don’t wear it if I don’t have anywhere nice to go!” Those were the words muttered by my good friend Leah as we were waiting for our table at a local restaurant. I noticed she was wearing one of this seasons hottest colors, navy. Although she was wearing a very trendy color she just so happened to be wearing navy sweat pants with a matching navy sweat-shirt and a pair of bright purple Uggs. Leah works two jobs, is a wife and also has a one year old daughter. I get it she’s busy. With all honesty I’m not saying she should be sitting there in a cocktail gown, heels and full makeup. But she has complained that she doesn’t feel “pretty” anymore. When I offered to help her find some style she said “I have nice stuff, I just don’t wear it if I don’t have anywhere nice to go!” That’s when I realized that in our day and age we don’t consider the simple stuff “Nice” anymore. All Leah would need to boost her confidence is a pair of comfortable yet stylish jeans, and a cardigan. some flats and a little lip gloss and it would make a world of difference. My Grandmother recently told me during the 1950’s girls wouldn’t be caught dead in public without wearing somethig nice. And same goes for men. What happened? We have the ability to watch movies on our cell phones. Skype to anywhere in the world and we have t.v’s thinner than a book. Yet going out to dinner isn’t considered “nice.” My hope for the new year is that we find style once again! Don’t save that perfume for a special occasion, make everyday that special occasion. Until next time this has been your Fashion Fairy Godmother venting about style. Carly Sinclair

New Year, L We spend January 1st walking through our lives, room by room, drawing up a list of work to be done, cracks to be patched. Maybe this year, to balance the list, we ought to walk through the rooms of our lives... not looking for flaws, but for potential. ~Ellen Goodman

Isn’t it crazy how often we really do spend the last few days of the year and the first few of the New Year examining all that is “wrong” with us and all the things we need to change and make “right”? Then, a few weeks or months into the year we lose sight of those things and are just as unhappy about them at the end of the next year. It’s quite a vicious cycle. Now, I am all for change, I believe that we are all capable of it, however I also believe that true growth and progress comes when we accept ourselves as we are in this moment before proceeding to change. Whether positive or negative or a mixture of the two, who we are at this moment in our story will serve as the foundation of the person we grow to become. In order to be truly balanced and at peace with ourselves, I think one of the main keys is to accept with love who we are; every aspect of who we are: past, present and future. So, maybe this year, rather than looking for all those bad habits and flaws, we can each try looking within ourselves for all of the untapped potential that is locked away in the depths of who we are. I know this issue is all about “New Year, New You” but I think that we may need to redefine “new” a little bit. The word new gives the illusion that we need to wipe the slate completely clean and start from scratch, but I don’t think that’s always the way to go in terms of the New Year. Our experiences, both good and not so good, shape the way we view ourselves and the world around us. I know from experiences in recent years that sometimes a year seems to have a lot of bad that comes to mind much easier than any of the good but looking back on all of it now I see how every experience is intertwined along the path that brought me to this very moment in my life. When we’re kids we’re taught opposites; light vs. dark wrong vs. right and good vs. bad so we’re informed that opposites can’t be combined; that they must always remain on opposing sides. What life has recently informed me is that to be balanced doesn’t always mean having an equal share of good and bad experiences, rather it means fully accepting whatever amount you have of either and knowing that they are equally important to your story. You see, when I look forward to this new year I don’t want to wipe slate clean and start all over towards a “new” me because in doing that I wouldn’t be progressing, in a sense I’d be stepping backwards which is the exact opposite of what we each hope to do with a new year. No, instead I’m looking at all that I am in this very moment and accepting and loving who I am. I’m not where I want to be, I don’t know that any of us will ever be “there” but I’m starting to understand that the journey towards “there” is possibly much more important than “there” itself. Regardless of whether or not we ever make it to that metaphorical “there” is anyone’s guess, but I know that as each one of us “walks through our lives, room by room” we’re bound to find endless amounts of potential. Potential for what? Well, that I think is up to

Love YOU!

each one of us to determine. But I love the idea of not making a list of things I want to “fix” but rather a list of things I haven’t done that I know I have it inside of me to do. It seems like a much more productive way to spend not just January 1st, but every morning. Today is a great day to start out with a fresh perspective, look forward to each day with the hope and knowledge that you could do something you’ve never done before. You know that phrase “out with the old, in with the new”? Well, maybe you don’t necessarily have to be out with the old in order to bring in the new. Maybe, it’s as we bring in the new that we find that the old is less of an issue. So, this year maybe we should toss out the whole “to do list” for ourselves and all the things we aren’t and make a new list…a list of all that we can become. How about, instead of “New Year, New You”, we say “New Year, Love You” and try to love who we are: past, present and future. We will open the book. Its pages are blank. We are going to put words on them ourselves. The book is called Opportunity and its first chapter is New Year's Day. ~Edith Lovejoy Pierce A year ago, I was given the opportunity to be a part of Bridget Marie; I had no idea if I was gonna be able to have something to say month after month. But Jason, along with a handful of other amazing supporters in my life believed in me; in my untapped potential. And a year later, here we are and Bridget Marie is celebrating its 1st Birthday and it’s still only the beginning. Jason and everyone at Bridget Marie seek to inspire you, the reader to be comfortable in your own skin and if you’re not quite there yet, we try to come alongside you and be there to support you. In doing so, I know for myself at least, Jason and Bridget Marie have inspired me and for that I would like to say thank you. So as we all prepare to embark on the journey this New Year will bring, I hope you remember that who you are, no matter where you are on your personal journey, is amazing and beautiful. May this year find you believing and owning that truth and may you fill the blank pages of your life’s story this year to the brim and may we be celebrating that story this time next year. So, let’s raise our glasses to all that we will become this year and also to Bridget Marie, may this be the first of many inspiring years to come. Happy New Year friends.

FIELD WORK

I remember when I first got the information about the different volunteer duties we could choose from : Laundry Assista Kitchen Assitant, HIV/AIDS Hospital volunteer, Gardening Assistant, Farm and Animal Care Assistant, Clean up after k assistant (that is not the real name, but that is pretty much all you do), Teaching Assistant, and FIELD WQRK. As the field worker assistant, you go around the nearby villages to check in on the sponsors kids, how exciting! At least to me.

Today was my first day in Field Work with Erick. We left about 8:30am and came back around 1:30pm. Not too bad of a work day, huh? Well we walked the entire time, probably about six miles. Six miles is not really that far to walk, but it is village with no paved roads, sidewalks, water stations, or place to stop and have lunch. I realized taking your work to lu is not common like in America. First of all, there are no left-overs. People eat as much as they can when they have it. Ev they did have left - overs it would go to livestock, not in a glade tupperware containter and put in the refrigerator over n

Not only did I enjoy getting to see how the villagers live and what kind of lifestyle, I was able to ask Erick questions abo his life, dreams and other Kenyan cultural stuff. Tracy: "What is your dream?" Erick: "To run an orphanage in Nairobi that not only serves the kids, but also the community. The center would have HIV/AIDS counseling and education, Doctor on staff, job resource center, basically anything to help those in need." Tracy: "What is your favorite food?" Erick: "Um, I am not sure. I guess Ugali (yuck!) and Chipati (yum!). What is your favorite food, Tracy?" Tracy: "I would have to say cheeseburgers and sushi. Have you ever had either one?" Erick: "No. I think I know what a hamburger is, but what is sushi?"

Tracy: "How does it work with the kids who are sponsored? How do you know who needs one?" Erick: "It is $25 to sponsor a child. That money will go to whatever it is they need. Usually it is school clothes, school supplies, matress, food, shoes, and etc. The people in the community tell me if another child is in need. We currently hav 59kids sponsored, but have another 20 kids on the list waiting."

Tracy: "Why aren't the kids living at the orphanage if they are so needy?" Erick: "About 90% of the sponsor kids are living with a grandparent, or other relative. So they are not considered orphan Until of course the grandparent dies, and people live pretty long here. My grandmother lived to 120 years old."

Tracy: "Is it okay if I look at a man and smile?" Erick: "That's a funny question. Why do you ask?" Tracy: "Because I have tried to make eye contact with people, both men and women, and they all seem to look away." Erick: "That is probably because you are a mzungo(white person). Some people here have never seen a mzungo. Have y noticed all the kids running behind us on the road? They have been yelling 'mzungo!mzungo!mzungo! How are you?' Yo see all babies are born white, even African babies. So they think you are a big baby, and want to touch the hand of a big white baby." Tracy: "Why are there tons of calendars hanging on the walls of the houses?" Erick: "That is how they decorate. How do you decorate at home?" Tracy: "Well we usually paint the walls different colors, hang pictures of family, or art work up."

Tracy: "Is is rude for me to decline tea or bread when they offer it to me? It seems every home we have been to they offe tea, and I can't drink that much tea or I will have to go to the bathroom every 5 minutes." Erick: "It isn't rude. They probably won't stop asking, so it is easier to just tell them you only want a little." ** the picture is of me and local villagers. the older woman admired the bandana I was wearing, so I gave it to her.
