October 2010 LETTER FROM THE EDITOR Five years ago I sat at the bar of the Roosevelt Hotel in Hollywood CA. The bartender had this carefree style about him which told me he was either an actor, model or musician. He was incredibly nice and talked with a slight twang. I remember thinking this guy has got to be a transplant from a small town in middle america somewhere. I was right, he’s from Ohio and he in fact is a musician. That was the day I met Brad Coder. Five years later and thanks to myspace, facebook and text messaging Brad and I still keep in touch. When I decided I wanted October to be the “Music Issue” I immediately thought of Brad for the cover. Brad has come quite a long way since we met. Brad and his band CODE1 are recording at Universal Music and you can find the cd “Brad Coder Project at www.TopeSecretProduction.net and on itunes.

One woman’s journey to following her passion Friday, April 9, 2010 First Week Goodness this has been an interesting week. I am at an internet cafe in Thika. Thika is about 45 minutes from Makuyu, where the orphanage is. To get here we walked about 20 minutes to the bus stop to jump on a Matutu. The Matutu bus ride took about 45 minutes. I think we are the only white people in the area. Everyone stares at us as we walk by and kids come up wanting to touch our hands. I imagine it is the same experience as a movie star. The reason the kids are so interested in touching us is because they think we are grown babies. All people are born white, even Kenyans. So the kids think we are big white babies. I hope I am making sense. I don't have much time and my thoughts are racing in every direction.

Overall I have had a great time. There was a bit of adjustment time, but things seem to be getting easier. There are 6 other volunteers from all over. Two from San Diego, one from South Korea, one from Germany, one from Canada, and one from England. The kids are great. They all have thier head shaved b/c of school. So it was hard to tell boys from girls. There are 34 in total, and I have started to get to know a handful of them. I have so many stories and thoughts in my head and so little time! There have been some frustrating moments. For example, some of the kids have been sick this week and at first it seemed as if the staff wasn't doing anything to take care of them. That was not the case. They just handle things differently than I would. Also, there communication is different. I think because there are so many kids (34 in total), staff (8), and volunteers (7) they have time to make sure everyone knows what is going on. I have also struggled to stay in the present. When I left I came with the desire to just serve and love others. That is still the case, but I started to feel like I needed to make a difference and change their lives forever. The more I accept how things are at that very moment and remind myself I don't have to make this huge impact. All I have to do is love. I have been reading my bible, and landed on James today. The entire chapter speaks to what I am going through, and how God wants me to handle these things. If you have time read it. The chapter is not that long. I have to go now. Hopefully the next time I write I will be able to make sense. Love to all!!!

Michelle Zacceria 21, is a full time Teacher’s Assistant for a special needs high school. When she is not working she is most likely doing something that involves music. Whether she is playing her bongo drums, harmonica, or even kazoo (yes I said kazoo) she is sure to be stopped and told that she looks like Gwen Stefani. Michelle says “Ever since I was a kid; people would tell me that I look like Gwen, which is funny because I am from Anaheim just like her. Bridget Marie Magazine decided to really put it to the test and transform the 21 year old into the iconic show stopper. It was apparent as soon as the red lipstick was on that Michelle really does look like Gwen.

BRAD CODER So Brad tell us where you are from. I’m from Columbus Ohio. How did you get into music? I just naturally grew into it. Tell us who your band “Code1” consist of. There is Adam Holt on drums, Jack La Padura on bass and me on vocals and guitar. Can we hear “Code1” anywhere at the moment? Yeah look us up on Facebook under Code1 or at www. myspace.com/codeone11 How can someone buy a cd? Well Code1 is still recording with Universal Music Group, so nothing is released yet. But the “Brad Coder Project” is available on Itunes and at topsecretproductions.net. Do you write your own music? All the songs are written by me and “Code1.” What instruments can you play? Guitar, bass, keys and vocals. Well those are what I’m best at. Who were your musical influences growing up? 1990-92 is when I fell deeply in love with music. The Red Hot Chili Peppers really got me into it and John Frusciante is the reason why picked up a guitar. Dave Grohl was also a big influence. What is your career goal? I want to be a “Go to writer” for many other artist. Writing just comes naturally to me. What is your passion? Music, traveling and being outdoors. I want to see and do everything! Who is someone you hope to collaborate with? Dave Grohl. How was your experience during the cover shoot for us? It was perfect! Professional, you guys made me look better off. What has been the best day of your life so far? That’s a hard one because I keep having them!

What is something in your wardrobe you should probably get rid of but can’t seem to let go? Old T-shirts that are probably vintage by now. Describe your personal style in five words. Surf, rock, music, a little dirty, and atheletic. What is the sexiest thing a girl can wear? I love it when women wear dresses that reveal their backs. I also love a flower in her hair. Boxers or briefs? Briefs. Who has the best style in the music industry? I think Prince does he knows his stuff. Okay I’m kidding, I’d have to say “The Red Hot Chili Peppers” because the less clothes the better.

THE DR. IS IN! If you went to highschool during the 90’s most likely you owned a pair of Doc Martens. Hopefully you kept them all of these years. The iconic footwear can be worn with anything from dresses to slacks. Although they are a little pricey, (ranging from $89.00 and up) Doc Martens are an investment to any wardrobe.

WHY? MUSIC.

By Leslie Lopez

"Music is a world within itself, in a language we all understand." -Stevie Wonder Sometimes I wish that music was acknowledged as a language, because maybe then I could get away with calling myself bilingual. But, even if it's not considered a legit language, no one can deny that music has an indescribable ability to speak volumes. On the wall at my brother's house there is a painting that says "Where words fail, music speaks." As a writer, the very idea that words can even fail makes me uncomfortable, but i have to acknowledge music's ability to serve as a universal language. At every live show I have ever had the opportunity to be at, I see the exact same thing: As you're arriving and settling into your seats, everyone looks around at the people sitting near you a little surprised that "they" could possibly like the same music that you do. And a while later, the main act comes on and after the first few notes are played, in an instant, entire arenas become one, all singing their favorite songs as one voice. By the end of the night you're all enjoying and sharing in the excitement of the experience. For a few short hours, you become friends with a complete stranger and its okay. Why? Music. In college, I temporarily tried my hand at being a music recording and production major. In one of my classes, a professor described music as being "genetically encoded". He then went on to explain that from the moment our hearts start beating, we have a natural attraction to music because of the natural rhythm we all contain inside of us. Have you ever noticed that you don't have to "teach" a toddler to dance, they just "know" how to bop up and down and dance as soon as they hear music playing? My professor did, however, emphasize that even though we all have a beating heart, we don't all have natural rhythm, myself included :) But, his main point was that we are all connected to music, even if its just in a small way and because of this connection, music can have the power to unite us. When I remember life before I started writing, I remember there were times where I would be feeling something, whether it was good, bad, or in between, and I would hear a song and like magic, I would think to myself "That's it! That's exactly how I feel!" It's a pretty amazing feeling; one that I still enjoy and appreciate. Because of these moments, whenever I hear certain songs, I am somehow transported back to specific times, places and remember special memories with people. One of the things I love most about music is how it is like an audio scrapbook of our lives. Do you know what I mean? Those special songs that bring back such detailed memories as though you were almost physically there again? I love that! Are you remembering and thinking of some of those songs right now? I hope you are, and I hope they're the songs that bring back good memories. :) I am a beyond huge John Mayer fan, so I couldn't possibly write this article for this special music edition of Bridget Marie without bringing him up in some way :) Anyway, one of those songs that bringsj back old, good, memories for me is one of his early songs; "Your Body Is A Wonderland" When I hear that song, it takes me back to like 7th grade when I was allowed to watch music videos on MTV or VH1 before school (Some of you might remember MTV and VH1 back when most of what they played were music videos before reality TV took over the world) Anyway, that's just one example for me. And as far as present day, I think the two songs that I will hear years from now that will bring me back to this time in my life would probably be "California Gurls" by Kay Perry and "Hey, Soul Sister" by Train. Both of those songs play several times a day on the radio at work. And when I hear them I think they will remind me of this scary, new, and exciting time in my life. What songs on your playlist will define this moment in your life? Take some time and just take in your music of the moment, take note of your musical scrapbook :) Take some time this month to just get lost in the music, go a little nuts, turn up the volume and go ahead and be a rockstar in the mirror singing into the hairbrush. Because, before you know it Holiday music will be taking over the airwaves.
