In the context of...
In the manner of...
In the spirit of...
The insertion project was fueled on the idea of precendents and producing designs through different concepts. By examining the pre-existing alms building through plans and elevations we were able to convert simple, abstract ideas into tangible designs within the structure. We explored our designs by the statements “in the context of”, “in the manner of”, and “in the spirit of”. Personally, my “in the manner of” concepts were the most influencial and were eventually the ones that were incorportated into my design. In the manner of was about what surrounded the Alms building which were the DAAP addition, the weather, and the nature.
ALMS INSERTION 5
Creating renderings of our Rhino presective drawings in Photoshop was the first introduction on creating a rendering with material and really made us dive in to using all of these different programs together. With a final basswood and museum 1/8 = 1’ model to show the design of the renderings in a 3D form.
From the process panels most students continued with one or two precedents to fuel their models and pinups. In the manner of nature and weather were the influences of this design and my idea of bringing the outside in. Originally nature meant having a tree grow in the middle of the building and weather meant an exterior spiral ramp to represent wind and tornados. These ideas morphed to create wave shaped balconies and walls for pinups and vertical gardens to inhabit.
This gown was created of around 700 shopping bags that were tied together to create a line of bags and were then hand woven into different patterns. The mantle was originally imagined as a scarf or top, but as the project was further understood the movement of the legs and arms became the focus. The train at the end of the gown dragged on the ground slightly to the left to show how the motion of walking or turning enhances it while also allowing the right leg to be mostly visible. The sleeve acted simliarly by being attached at the wrist and by having the top be open to showcase the bending of the elbow.

PLANE CUBE 11
The plane cube was the core to producing both 2D and 3D studies . By first creating gouache paintings to further our understandings of how planes overlap and how to show the depth through a grayscale. While doing this 3D initiations of cubes were created and critqued until a final design was decided on. The grayscale study influenced how the cube was shown in elevations and axon paintings. In elevation view the different grays determines how the planes overlap while in axon view the different grays shows the direction that the plane faces.

The Curtain Wall House (1995), designed by Shigeru Ban is located on a street corner in the heart of Tokyo, Japan. The house was designed for the client to use as a home and a studio while exploring the idea of a curtain wall on the exterior. The curtain wall made the spaces on the second floor to be either private or public to the street below it. The idea of letting in the sunlight to most of the spaces created this open floor plan and an entire story is almost public because of it. The third story is mostly private within the structure through movable walls, but is still viewable to the public if the curtain is open.

FOLLY 15
This project was used to practice teamwork and the design process between multiple people. We were to produce an 8ft x 8ft pavilion made out of OSB, 2 by 4’s, and an additional white material for people to inhabit and to experience. By creating our first designs individually and grouping up as we went created more discussion and more interesting designs. After creating more proposals in our groups we were again combined to create two groups of 9 that not only had to work together, but the two groups switched projects. Process and the morphing of designs can be seen through Rhino models as we planned how to properlly use our materials without much waste. This structure was on display for an entire week then was taken apart and donated to a local highschool architecture class.

BALANCE BLOCK
21
The balance block was used to further hands on experience with wood shop tools. The 12 in x 12 in structure was built to be supported on a 2 in x 2 in stand. My final design was based off of two studies from the first iterations where one has masses that spiraled up attaching with very little surface while the other had everything at an angle. This led to the stand to be what was at the angle and all of the other massings, which were spiraling, were all orthogonal.
These collages are based off of the five sections of T.S. Elliot’s poem “ The Wasteland” , they were based off of words that described the feelings of each section. The words used were isolation, path, contrast, overlap, and separation, these later influenced the spaces within the model.
POETRY FOUNDATION
23
This project was the first iteration for the Poetry Foundation for Cincinnati and was to be used to get our ideas out with the constraints of the sites located in Over-the-Rhine. Made using basswood and museum board the volumes and shadows were examined along with scale figures. This model is to help influence my design once we take the site into more consideration and make final plans for the poetry foundation.
