HISTORY

JOHN BASKERVILLE “Having been an early admirer of the beauty of letters, I became insensibly desirous of contributing to the perfection of them. I formed to myself ideas of greater accuracy than had yet appeared, and had endeavoured to produce a set of types according to what I conceived to be their true proportion.”

J

ohn Baskerville, the designer of this typeface, was originally an illiterate man from Birmingham, England. His master, a clergyman, eventually noticed his talent for penmanship and sent him to learn to read and write. With time and patience, Baskerville became an expert type designer and printer. He perfected his own style of production that created high quality, crisp, and dark prints. Baskerville also replaced the wooden platen with a metal one to ensure the finer details of his type were captured in the process. Baskerville is a Transitional

typeface originally developed in 1754 (long before Mr. Sherlock Holmes’ time) with heavy contrast in its letter forms and a crispness that came from its designer’s patience and artistry. Baskerville did not gain much popularity until after its designer had passed, but experienced a resurgence in the early twentieth century after an American typographer, Bruce Rogers, decided to recast an original set of Baskerville matrices. Baskerville works wonderfully for body copy and also for display text. It is truly a classic typeface for the ages.

Just let me alone, and I’ll soon be right. What have you to confess now? It’s just as well for two fellows to know the worst of one another before they begin to live together.”
