2010 Season Outlook Eagles ready to battle for ODAC title After making yet another NCAA Sweet 16 run in 2009, the Bridgewater Eagles softball team enters the 2010 season with a number of question marks as they look to contend for the 2010 Old Dominion Athletic Conference title. Question number one is how to replace Kaitlyn Bowman who is arguably the best player to ever play at Bridgewater and AllAmerican Caity Butler. Bowman rounded out an incredible career last season as the career hits (233) and home runs (33) leader and also boasts the standard for most game played (172) in a career. Butler owns the career walks record and is in the top ten in nearly every offensive category after a stellar career with the Eagles. Fulk is entering his 19th season at the helm of the Bridgewater College program and will also be looking to answer question number two: How to topple perennial power Lynchburg and earn the program’s fourth ODAC title? Bridgewater split with Lynchburg in the 2009 regular season and fell to the Hornets in the ODAC tournament, but got revenge in regional play by knocking off the ODAC champions to advance to the NCAA tournament. With the departure of four highly talented seniors, the Eagles brought in a class of eight freshman to help fill the void and aid the Eagles towards another ODAC championship. After contending last season for the ODAC crown, Fulk sees the conference as a whole getting much deeper with two teams clearly at the top. “At the top, I would have to put Lynchburg and Roanoke. Lynchburg has to be at number one because they are the defending champs, but Roanoke brought in two Division I transfers and will play at a high level this season. Overall, I think some of the best softball in Division III is played in the ODAC.” Fulk also looks for Virginia Wesleyan, Eastern Mennonite and Guilford to slip into the mix this season in a deep and loaded ODAC. Bridgewater opens the season on February 27 when the squad hosts Hood. Conference play for the Eagles begins on March 11, when the squad travels to Guilford.

Coaching Staff Donnie Fulk, Head Coach
Entering his 19th season as head coach at Bridgewater College, Donnie Fulk has compiled a record of 457 wins and 247 losses. Under his direction, the Eagles won ODAC regular season titles in 1994, 2006 and 2007. He was named the ODAC Coach of the Year in 1996 and 2006 and VaSID State Coach of the Year in 2006, 2007 and 2009. The 2000 team finished with a 32-10 record and received the program’s first-ever national ranking, reaching as high as No. 19 in the Division III poll. In 2006, the Eagles finished with a 34-9 record and were ranked in the South Region poll for much of the season. The 2006 team finished the year with a .386 batting average to rank No. 1 in the nation in the final Division III statistical rankings. In 2007, the program reached new heights with a BC record 40 victories against just eight losses. The Eagles placed first in the ODAC regular season standings with a 17-1 record and advanced to the conference tournament championship game. The team received an at-large bid to the NCAA Division III tournament, the program’s first-ever bid to the national playoffs. The Eagles advanced to the round of 16, losing in the regional title game to DePauw. Bridgewater was ranked No. 19 in the final 2007 NFCA Division III poll. The Eagles also won another statistical title, leading Division III in runs scored with 8.48 runs per game. Last season, the Eagles finished with a solid 36-11 mark and earned an NCAA Division III playoff berth. BC defeated the ODAC champions Lynchburg to go to the NCAA tournament before falling 2-1 to Salisbury in the Sweet 16. Fulk led the Eagles towards numerous individual postseason awards. In addition to coaching softball, Fulk is the director of the Bridgewater College Eagle Club. Fulk resides in Bridgewater with his wife Jane. They have two married daughters and one granddaughter and two grandsons.
Danny Conley, Assistant Coach
After three years as a volunteer assistant coach, Danny Conley has been promoted to assistant coach. He has 29 years coaching experience in baseball and softball. In addition to recruiting duties, Conley works with hitters, outfielders and middle infielders.
Skip Eger, Volunteer Assistant Skip Eger has 18 years of coaching experience in softball and baseball. He is a teacher in the Augusta County School System.

OldDominionAthleticConference Entering its 34rd season, the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) has grown into one of the nation’s largest Divsion III conferences. The 13-member league stands as the second-largest multisport Division III conference in the country. The league was formed on May 18, 1975 as the Virginia College Conference and began operations in September of 1976 (The name change to ODAC became effective Jan. 1, 1976). Charter members were eight colleges located in the state of Virginia: Bridgewater, Eastern Mennonite, Emory and Henry, Hampden-Sydney, Lynchburg, Randolph-Macon, Roanoke and Washington and Lee. From its initial year of operation through the 198182 academic year, the ODAC sponsored competition in 10 men’s varsity sports, including football, soccer and cross country in the fall; basketball, wrestling and indoor track in the winter; and baseball, golf, tennis and outdoor track in the spring. Women’s sports were added prior to the 1982-83 school year. Today the ODAC has grown to sponsoring championships in 22 sports. The conference expanded in the late 1980’s and again in the early 1990’s. Virginia Wesleyan became the 12th member of the conference in 1988 and began full-scale competition in the league in the 198990 academic season. Guilford College, voted into the league in the spring of 1990, began competing for conference championships in the 1991-92 year. Over the past several years the conference and the city of Salem, Va., have gained national attention through hosting NCAA championships in football, men’s basketball, baseball and softball. The growing list of titles passed out in Salem began in the fall of 1993 with the DIII football championship. Since that time, the two hosts have gained three additional tournaments, including the NCAA Division III Men’s Basketball Final Four.
