BRIDGEWATER EAGLES

2011-12 Season Preview The 2011-12 season will see talented seniors and a number of new faces battling for the top four scoring positions for the Bridgewater Eagles golf team as they look to continue their time in the upper echelon of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC). Two-time defending ODAC individual champion Mike Redwood graduated in May, leaving a void towards the top of the scoring quartet. Despite the loss of Redwood and fellow May graduate Michael Hankins, the Bridgewater Eagles return a talented group of seniors and juniors to the fray as they look to dethrone the defending team champions, Guilford. Senior Travis Gahman and fellow classmate John Phillips return after a pair of solid seasons in 201112. Gahman’s scoring average inched up a season ago, while Phillips has consistently shown improvement across his three-plus year career.

The Eagles will have to replace their top player in 201112 as two-time defending ODAC champion Mike Redwood was lost due to graduation.

Gahman returns after earning first team All-ODAC honors and Cleveland Golf All-America Scholar honors a season ago. Phillips rejoins the mix after picking up an honorable mention All-ODAC selection to also go along with Cleveland Golf All-America scholar honors. Senior Mike Reuschling also returns after a strong season in 2010-11, despite limited action. Bobby Fields and Tod Foshee return to lead the junior class. Foshee broke 80 across his 20-plus rounds from a year ago, while Fields only saw action in one round of play during the 2010-11 campaign. Foshee turned in a 16th-place effort at last year’s ODAC Championship in Cape Charles, Va. The Eagles also return a pair of sophomores in Matt Dye and Chris Pinkos. Both Pinkos and Dye saw a limited role a season ago. In the offseason, Williams brought in a pair of freshman with both players expected to push into the top five. Charlottesville product Scott Wakely is joined by another local recruit in Dalton Campbell in the two-man freshman class for the Eagles. Campbell comes to Bridgewater after earning first team AllDistrict honors last year at nearby Riverheads High School, while Wakely joins the fray after claiming Virginia’s Region II individual championship a year ago. Bridgewater opens the 2012 spring campaign on Feb. 27 at the Pine Needles Invitational in Pinehurst, N.C. 4

Lee Williams Head Coach

11th Year

Alma Mater: Heidelberg Dr. Leroy Williams begins his 11th full season as Bridgewater’s golf coach. Dr. Williams is also the Chairman of the Math and Computer Science Department. Coach Williams’ goals are straightforward. “Basically, we want to show improvement in every match, win the ODAC Championship, and qualify for the NCAA Tournament.” To help meet this goal the team will once again work with John Rogers, the Assistant Golf Pro at Lakeview Golf Course in Harrisonburg, Va. Bridgewater reached the program’s pinnacle moment under Williams in 2010 when the Eagles dethroned Guilford College to earn the school’s first ever ODAC Golf Championship. Williams also led then-junior Mike Redwood to the program’s first individual title at the annual conference championship. In 2011, the Eagles took home the runner-up spot at the ODAC Championships, but more program milestones were reached when Redwood repeated as the conference individual flag winner. Redwood became the first player in ODAC history to repeat as the individual champion, and later became the first Bridgewater player to ever qualify as an individual for the NCAA Championships. Williams has coached nine All-ODAC performers, including four-time honorees Redwood and Grady Ruckman. Williams’ teams have also set the team scoring record on two seperate occasions, most recently with a 303.3 team average during the 2010-11 season. Dr. Williams came to Bridgewater in 1995 after spending four years as a professor of Computer Science at the United States Naval Academy. He served 22 years in the U.S. Navy as a surface warfare specialist and computer engineer and achieved the rank of Commander before his retirement in 1995. A native of Euclid, Ohio, Coach Williams received his undergraduate degree from Heidelberg College and holds a Ph.D. in Information Technology from George Mason University.

The College

Strength and Conditioning Maintaining top physical condition is the job of the strength and conditioning staff. The goal of the strength and conditioning staff is to reduce the risk of athletic injury, develop the force potential (strength and power) of each athlete, enhance the specific movement patterns related to their activity and address the energy needs for each sport. Ultimately, the staff intends to maximize the athletic potential of each of our student athletes.
