Depth is Key for 2011 Softball Squad Most times when a team loses what are widely considered to be its top two pitchers, the coaching staff lowers expectations while the team matures and the younger members of the pitching staff develop. Well, all coaches except Bridgewater College head coach Donnie Fulk, who enters the 2011 season with a number of question marks in the circle, but an otherwise veteran team. “When you look at us, we lost two extremely good pitchers in Ashley Gills and Lindsay Lam. We also lost a quality pitcher in Becky Schmidt. But, the young pitchers that we have coming back are looking impressive…We may be young, but we could have a really solid pitching staff,” said Fulk, who is entering his 20th season at the helm of the Bridgewater softball team. Behind the pitching staff, the Eagles return a load of experienced players, including the everyday starters from a season ago, when Bridgewater posted a 33-10 campaign. But the team also graduated its all-time strikeouts leader in Ashley Gills, and, Lindsay Lam, who was turned to in a number of big game situations and delivered some key victories in recent years. For Fulk, the team’s successes will hinge on the development of his pitchers. Pitchers: Bridgewater returns a number of young pitching prospects to the fold, including last season’s No. 3 pitcher, Heather Jenkins, junior Summer Ramsey and switch players Aven Thomas and Amber Marstin. While Thomas and Marstin saw limited action in the circle for the Eagles a season ago, Jenkins posted a 7-2 record, which included a pair of shutouts. The then-freshman, turned in a seven-inning, one-hit shutout of Gettysburg College in the early part of the season, before notching her first career conference shutout against Eastern Mennonite in game two of a sweep of the Royals. Ramsey also comes back to the mix and has been a silent assassin for the Eagles during her first two years with the program. “Summer has been one of our pitchers that seems to toss a big game every time she makes an appearance. Her limited action during her first two seasons has basically been due to upperclassmen depth,” commented Fulk. Marstin and Thomas saw the majority of their time in different positions last season, but will provide a heavy dose of quality depth to the pitching staff. Both hurlers turned in strong outings in the Fall when the Eagles traveled to Charlottesville and stole a game from the Virginia Cavaliers. Jenkins, Thomas and Marstin will also see action at other positions for the Eagles as Fulk looks to utilize their dual-threat nature. Infielders: Bridgewater brings back its entire infield which aided the team in posting the best fielding percentage in school history a season ago. While the entire infield returns, the Eagles will be making some defensive switches in the middle infield from the way the team lined up in 2010. Hillary Rees will switch from second base to shortstop, while Emily Morris moves back to second base after a two-year hiatus from playing defensively on a regular basis. “We are making the defensive changes so that we can get as many of our heavy hitters into the lineup as possible on a game-by-game basis,” said Fulk. “At shortstop, Hillary could Hillary Rees will switch from second base to shortstop this very well end up being the best shortstop in the ODAC, while season

we’ve always felt that Emily could have been the second-best second baseman in the ODAC, she just couldn’t edge out the conference’s top second baseman in Hillary.” On the corners, Lauren Childress and Angela Spinelli return to the fray after both players turned in dramatically improved junior seasons. Childress was sensational at the hot corner, cutting her errors down by 60% and hitting at a .359 clip with career highs in runs scored (26), doubles (12), home runs (3) and RBI (31). Spinelli was also impressive, becoming a consistent threat at the plate after posting a .414 batting average and setting career-highs in Lauren Childress showed dramatic improvement at her third base post a season ago. every offensive category. “Spinelli had a breakout season last year. She’s always been a good defensive first baseman, but her bat really came alive last season. Lauren has worked immensely on her game and after a few years of adjusting to playing third base, she’s there. They both had a great season last year, and we’re looking for more of the same this year,” said Fulk. Breaunna Hinegardner also joins the mix in the infield for the Eagles and will back Spinelli up at first base. In high school, Hinegardner was the everyday starter in the circle, and is working to adjust her game to develop into an everyday first baseman. Sarah Goodman also returns to the fray for the Eagles after playing on the Junior Varsity squad during the 2010 season. Goodman will platoon for the Eagles in the infield. Outfielder: In the outfield, everyone returns as well, but returning depth will cause the hottest bats and the best gloves to take to the field on a daily basis as the abilities of every player will give them a chance to see more playing time. “There are a lot of people in the outfield, and that will allow more players the opportunity to see increased playing time this season. We feel really good about what we have, and despite it being a different lineup from last season, there will be a lot of new faces on a game-to-game basis,” commented Fulk. Thomas will maintain a strong hold on the right field position, but during situations where Thomas moves to the circle, the Eagles will look to a number of players to fill her void, including sophomore Morgan Williams. Williams was primarily a situational runner for the Eagles in 2010, and came in as a catcher but has worked hard to learn how to play in the outfield . At centerfield, a number of Eagles could show up on the lineup card at any given time. Seniors Leah Cossentino and Drew Rutledge will battle it out for playing time in centerfield. Cossentino broke onto the scene last season, hitting over .400 for the majority of the slate, before tailing off to a .391 finish. Rutledge has struggled at the plate since the latter part of her freshman season, but shows signs of improvement and has plenty of arm to patrol the center of the Melanie Lamb was stellar at the palte for the outfield for the Eagles. Eagles in 2010. In left, Kristen Combs and Kasey Anderson will push each other for

playing time. Combs had a solid season in 2010, hitting two homeruns on the year and driving in a dozen runs. Anderson joins the Eagles after earning High School All-American honors during her senior season at Chatham High. Catchers: Most Division III teams are happy to have one solid catcher, but the problem for the Eagles isn’t the number they have behind the dish, it’s going to be how to get three solid catchers as much playing time as possible. “We have so much depth behind the plate, that our problem is finding playing time for each of our catchers. They each have their own strengths that they bring to the table, it’s just going to be our job as a coaching staff to find what strengths we need to utilize for each game,” said Fulk. All three catchers return after seeing time last season. Sophomore Melanie Lamb and Junior Sarah Heretick split duties a season ago, while Leigh Lam also saw action behind the dish before being sidelined due to an injury. Lamb recorded a solid season at the plate, drilling six homeruns in just 60 at-bats, while Heretick struggled to get going at the plate, hitting .161. Lam was impressive at the plate as well, tallying 11 runs on 11 hits. Conference Outlook: Aside from the team’s apparent youth in the circle, its experience at every other position could set the team up for a tremendously suc-

cessful 2011 season. “Other coaches may have written us off this season due to our pitching, but I’m not buying it,” said Fulk. “Top to bottom our conference is tough, EMU proved that last season, but I think we will challenge the top teams in the league this season.” Fulk’s assessment of the parody in the league was proven to be correct in 2010, as Eastern Mennonite entered the ODAC Tournament as the No. 6 seed, but left the tournament as the conference’s automatic qualifier and earned a trip to the NCAA Tournament. Perennial power Lynchburg also returns a quality bunch and is always in the postseason mix, while according to Fulk, Roanoke and Guilford had strong recruiting classes which could catapult them to the top part of the conference. “We will be in the mix, I wouldn’t necessarily classify us as a team in the top two in the league yet, but it doesn’t matter where you start the season, it’s where you finish,” said Fulk. Bridgewater starts the season on February 26 with a trip to Frederick, Md. to take on Hood and hopes to end the season with the program’s first ODAC tournament championship and a ticket to the NCAA Championships. “I like our chances, we have a great group which has worked hard in the offseason and is excited to get on the field for the first game,” commented Fulk.

Commissioner Brad Bankston Celebrating its 35th year of operations, the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) is one of the nation’s largest Division III conferences. The 14- member ODAC, including one associate member, stands as the second-largest multi-sport NCAA Division III conference in the country. The league was formed on May 18, 1975 as the Virginia College Conference and began operations in September of 1976. (The name change to Old Dominion Athletic Conference became effective January 1, 1976). Charter members were eight colleges located in the state of Virginia: Bridgewater College, Eastern Mennonite College, Emory & Henry College, Hampden-Sydney College, Lynchburg College, Randolph-Macon College, Roanoke College and Washington and Lee University. From its initial year of operation through the 1981-82 academic year, the ODAC sponsored competition in 10 men’s varsity sports, including football, soccer, and cross country in the fall; basketball, wrestling, and indoor track and field in the winter; and baseball, golf, tennis, and outdoor track and field in the spring. Women’s sports were added prior to the 1982-83 school year. Today, the ODAC has grown to Sponsor championships in 22 sports (10 men and 12 women) and houses nine full-time coeducational institutions with four single-gender schools making up the current 13 full-time members. The conference expanded in the late 1980s, early 1990s and most recently in 1999. Virginia Wesleyan became the 13th member of the conference in 1988 and began full-scale competition in the league in the 1989-90 academic year. Guilford College, voted into the conference in the spring of 1990, began competing for conference championships in the 1991-92 season. The Catholic University of America (DC) was accepted for associate membership in football on January 12, 1999. Over the past 16 years the conference and the City of Salem, Va., have gained national attention through hosting five NCAA Division III championships in football, men’s basketball, softball, baseball, women’s lacrosse, and volleyball. The growing list of titles passed out in Salem began in the fall of 1993 with the DIII Football Championship. Through the 2008-09 academic year, the conference and city have hosted 46 NCAA Division III Championships since the ‘93 Stagg Bowl. This year, the two will serve as hosts to the DIII football and men’s basketball championships.
