2012 Season Preview The 2012 Bridgewater College baseball team is looking forward to the upcoming season that begins Sunday at N.C. Wesleyan College. There is plenty of reason for optimism as the season approaches. The Eagles return their top three starting pitchers, the entire starting infield and one of the best outfielders in the ODAC. With plenty of returning talent and a solid freshman class the Eagles, the regular season winner in the ODAC in 2011, were a solid choice to win the ODAC title in the coaches’ preseason poll released last week. Along with the returning talent there is also plenty of motivation for this year’s team. Despite going 15-3 in the ODAC and 26-18 overall, the Eagles feel like there is still some unfinished business to take care as they came up just short of winning the conference tournament, losing to Randolph-Macon College in the championship round. “Winning an ODAC title is always one of our goals,” head coach Curt Kendall said. “This team has set some lofty goals as far as wins, offensive production and pitching numbers. If this team meets its goals, we are going to have a very good season.” Kendall sees the usual suspects contending with the Eagles for a conference title. “Randolph-Macon is going to be good. They return one of this best players in nation in Jordan Walton along with other quality players,” Kendall said. “Lynchburg is a team that always competes. They have good players and they always play us tough. Hampden-Sydney is the same way. They put kids on the field who play the game hard. Washington and Lee always seems to run some pretty good arms out to the mound and they have been pretty productive offensively in recent years,” Kendall said. Kendall also expects to see Virginia Wesleyan bounce back after missing the tournament last year. “I’ve been coaching against Nick Boothe at Wesleyan for a long time. They won’t be down for long.” In addition to a solid conference slate, the Eagles will face a strong non-conference schedule as well. The Eagles have two games slated with Christopher Newport, ranked No. 7 in the d3baseball.com preseason poll, and future ODAC member Shenandoah, ranked No. 21 in the preseason rankings. Bridgewater also has a challenging spring break trip planned with games against Mount Union, Thomas More, Aurura and Husson. Thomas More is ranked No. 19 in the preseason poll while Aurora received votes for the Top 25. Husson, like Thomas More and Aurora, was an NCAA tournament team in 2011. “The non-conference schedule will be challenging and it’s that way on purpose,” Kendall said. “It will help prepare us for the conference games and, if we make it to postseason play, we will know the caliber of teams we can expect to face.” PITCHING STAFF If the 2012 ODAC baseball season turns into an arms race the Bridgewater College Eagles will be well prepared. The Eagles pitching staff is one of the main reasons the team was picked No. 1 in the ODC Preseason Coaches’ Poll. The staff returns its top three starters – including a pair of all-conference performers – and an experienced bullpen. Toss in some promising newcomers and the Eagles appear to have not only a talented, but a deep, pitching staff. A quick look at pure numbers shows the quality and depth of

the returning staff. The Eagles won 26 games in 2011. Twenty of those wins belong to pitchers on this year’s staff. A year ago the Eagles finished first in the ODAC regular season standings. This year’s returning pitchers accounted for 80 percent of the innings pitched a year ago. The strength of the staff begins with its starters. Kevin Chandler, Joseph Lucas and Robert Gallet combined to go 11-2 against ODAC teams during the 2011 regular season. Add sophomore Dillon Via and freshman lefty Corey Armentrout to the mix and the Eagles can run a quality starter to the mound each game. “We feel like we have a group of starters that can go out and give us a chance to win every time they take the mound,” Bridgewater head coach Curt Kendall said. Chandler and Lucas return as the weekend starters after going a combined 8-2 a year ago in regular season ODAC games. Lucas lost a 1-0 decision against Roanoke and Chandler pitched well in a 4-1 loss to Lynchburg. Both were named to the AllODAC second team. “Kevin is a guy who has improved every year,” Kendall said. “He has good command of four pitches and he can handle tough situations. Lucas is a lot like Chandler. He just goes out and competes and frustrates hitters. He has a great changeup and that makes it tough for hitters to zero in on him.” Gallet will be back in the same role he manned as a freshman, pitching midweek games against conference competition. “Robert has worked hard to get stronger and he has developed a curve. This year we will have some help for him during the midweek so he won’t have to see the same team twice.” That midweek help will come from Via and Armentrout. Via saw limited innings during his first year, but is now poised to assume a bigger role on the staff. “Dillon has become more consistent and his command is much better. He’s a guy with a lot of upside,” said Kendall. Armentrout gives Kendall another quality lefty in the rotation. “The challenge for Corey will be to locate his pitches consistently. If he does that, he will be very good at this level.” The bullpen features a good mix of lefties and righties. Christian Armstrong, Tyler Conley and Ryan Fitzgerald give Kendall three lefty options out of the bullpen. “Conley and Armstrong give us a couple of lefthanders in short relief that we can use in different situations. Fitzgerald is a freshman who needs to work on consistency.” Sophomores Tyler Slanovec and Kyle Henshaw emerged as viable quality options out of the pen during their freshmen seasons. Slanovec led the team in saves with three and had an ERA under two. Henshaw was 2-0 with one save. “Tyler is a competitor. His pitches have some movement and he goes after hitters,” Kendall said. “Henshaw has a lot of upside. His velocity has improved and I think there is a chance it will still increase some more.” Right-handers John Bayse, Mark Smith and Jordan Neff complete the Eagles staff. “Bayse has improved this year. He gives us a guy with experience out of the bullpen. Same thing with Mark Smith. He’s another guy who has some experience and he pitched pretty well this past summer.” Neff is a big freshman with a lot of potential. “Jordan is a guy who could help us in short relief. He’s got a lot of upside. He’ll get better the more he pitches,” Kendall stated.

“We have a lot of options out of the bullpen. There will be days, depending on the schedule, when Via, Armentrout and Gallet could also be available in relief. I think we have a good mix of long and short relievers who can help us close out games,” said Kendall. A main reason for the staff’s success a season ago was their ability to avoid the bases on balls. The Eagles averaged just 2.78 walks per nine innings a year ago, down from 3.4 walks per nine innings in 2010. Lucas, Chandler and Gallet averaged just 2.25 walks per nine innings pitched. “Our philosophy is to challenge hitters. We want to throw quality strikes and get hitters to put the ball in play,” Kendall said. “We feel like we are going to put a very good defensive team on the field. If we can limit walks we can limit the scoring opportunities for our opponent.” THE INFIELD Bridgewater returns its entire starting infield to the diamond for the 2012 season. It’s a group that was not only productive at the plate, but solid with the glove. “We feel really good about our infield from a defensive standpoint,” said Bridgewater head coach Curt Kendall. “At the plate, these guys have been productive.” Back behind the dish is senior Devon Snow, one of the top all-around catchers in the conference. “Devon has been a consistent offensive performer and he will probably hit in the 2-hole for us. He’s got good speed and defensively he has a strong arm and he does a good job handling the pitchers,” said Kendall. When Snow gets a break from the catching duties, he will see action in the outfield. Junior Andrew Hacker is back at first base. Hacker’s production slipped a bit as a sophomore but he has the ability to be a productive hitter in the middle of the lineup. “Hacker’s been swinging the bat as well as anyone we have,” said Kendall. “He will hit fifth in the lineup and I’m expecting him to have a good year.” Sophomore Bryan Sanderson returns at second after a solid first year for the Eagles. Sanderson hit .307 as a freshman and will bat leadoff for the Eagles this season. “Bryan gives us some pop at the top of the lineup. He’s got good speed and defensively he’s solid at second. Second-team All-ODAC and third-team All-South Region pick Jay Thompson returns to the hot corner for his senior season. “Fundamentally, Jay may not be as sound as you would like at times, but he has great reaction and instincts at third. He will make some plays over there that are unbelievable,” Kendall said. Thompson hit .340 a year ago and is one of the top hitters in the lineup. “Jay will hit fourth in the lineup and he will be one of the keys to our offense.” Back at shortstop will be senior Alex Nuttycombe. “Nutty is our defensive anchor,” said Kendall. “He’s going to make all the routine plays. At the plate, we just need him to be more consistent. He’s been either very cold or very hot. He seems to always get hot at tournament time.” Behind the starters, the Eagles return a couple of experienced reserves to go along with some promising newcomers. Backing up Snow behind the plate will be sophomore Ryan Smith. “Ryan has really improved in all aspects of the game since last year. When he’s not catching, he could be in the mix as a right-hand hitting DH.” Sophomores Tyler Hoffman and Jeff Buckler could also see action. “Hoffman’s strength is his ability as a receiver. He’s working hard to become a more consistent hitter. Buckler is the opposite. He can swing it, but he needs to work on his defensive skills,” Kendall said. Junior Matt Maher and sophomore Zach Hynes will be key

reserves in the infield. Maher will back up second and third. “Matt is a solid defensive player and an improving hitter. You know he will compete,” said Kendall. Hynes started several games at shortstop as a freshman and will back up all infield positions this season. “Defensively, Zach can play any of the four spots. He needs to become more consistent with the bat,” said Kendall. Transfer Cam Stevenson and freshman Theo Klopsis could also see action in the outfield. “Stevenson is a left-hand hitter that can do some things for you at the plate,” said Kendall. “Theo has been a pleasant surprise. He’s been swinging the bat well and he can play all four infield positions.” Freshmen Evan Smith and Joey Priftis will also compete for time along with freshman Corey Armentrout. “Evan is working at the corners and some in the outfield. He’s a kid that runs pretty well and has some upside. “If Priftis can iron out his swing, he’s got some pop. He needs to improve his defense at first base,” said Kendall. Armentrout will do most of his work on the mound, but he could see some time at first as well. “He’s pretty good with the glove,” said Kendall. THE OUTFIELD The biggest question marks for the Bridgewater baseball team as they prepare for the start of the 2012 season can be found in the outfield. The Eagles need to find successors for leftfielder Kevin Kirk and centerfielder Brett Howell, both 2011 graduates. There is however, no question about right-field where junior Johnny Mason, one of the top hitters in the ODAC, returns Mason put up big numbers a year ago when he hit .300 with five homers and 42 RBIs to earn first-team All-ODAC honors. “Johnny is our leader,” Bridgewater head coach Curt Kendall said. “He will hit in the 3-hole for us again. He had a very good season for us last year and we’re expecting more of the same this season. The key for Johnny is to stay aggressive at the plate. If he does that, he is a very good Division III hitter. He’s also a solid defensive outfielder.” The Eagles may have found their centerfielder for the next four seasons as freshman Darren Yoder will get the nod as the starter. “Darren runs well and he’s got a good arm. He’s a natural centerfielder. He will hit in the 9-hole, but we think he can be a leadoff type guy in the future.” For the time being, Yoder will concentrate on his outfield duties, but in the future, Kendall may move him to the mound where he has shown potential with a live arm. The left-field spot will be a platoon of three players – freshman Derik Walling, sophomore Nick Fulk and junior Christian Armstrong. “Walling is a natural outfielder,’ said Kendall. “He’s a strong kid who swings the bat pretty well from the left side. Plus, he also runs pretty well. He’s got a lot of potential.” Walling will also back up Yoder in center.\ Fulk, who saw limited action as a freshman, is a “gritty-type player,” according to Kendall “Nick runs well and he’s a kid that’s going to play the game hard.” Armstrong saw limited duty last year in the outfield and should see some time there again when he is not on the mound. “Christian has improved as a hitter. He just needs to be consistent at the plate. He’s a solid defensive outfielder.” Evan Smith, a big right-handed hitter with decent speed, is also working in the outfield and could see time there in the future Also, senior Devon Snow will see time in the outfield when he is getting a break from catching.

Curt Kendall, Head Coach Curt Kendall, the winningest coach in Bridgewater baseball history with a 595-386-8 record, is starting his 27th season as the Eagles’ skipper. Since taking over the program in 1986, Kendall has led BC to 11 Old Dominion Athletic Conference tournament championships and 12 ODAC regular season titles. In addition, Kendall has been honored as the league’s Coach-of-the-Year five times. A year ago, the Eagles finished first in the ODAC regular season standings with a 15-3 conference mark and a 26-18 overall record. The Eagles were defeated in the championship round of the ODAC tournament by Randolp-Macon. Kendall’s latest title run came two yearw ago when the Eagles claimed the 2010 ODAC baseball championship. The Eagles made their seventh trip to the NCAA Division III tournament where they were eliminated in two straight games. Bridgewater finished the 2010 season with a 23-20-1 record. A 1981 graduate of Bridgewater, Kendall played third base on the Eagles’ 1978 ODAC championship team and remained with the program as an assistant to head coach Tom Kinder following graduation. After helping lead the Eagles to another ODAC crown in 1985, Kendall took over as head coach the following year and guided BC to a then-school record 23 victories and the ODAC regular season and tournament titles. The 1988 season saw the Bridgewater program reach even greater heights. The Eagles again broke the school record for victories in a season, going 25-8 and again capturing the ODAC regular season and championship titles. Bridgewater was ranked as high as 16th in the country and Kendall was named the College Division Coach-of-the-Year in the state of Virginia. The following season, the Eagles compiled a 21-9 mark and added yet another ODAC regular season crown and finished the season ranked 18th in the country. Kendall’s career took another step forward in 1994 when the Eagles tied a school record for victories with a 25-11 record. The Eagles earned their sixth ODAC championship and the fourth during Kendall’s tenure. The Eagles were rewarded with an invitation to the NCAA Division III South Regional Tournament, the first in the school’s impressive baseball history. Kendall’s team continues the success story in 1995, as the Eagles finished with a 25-10 record and the ODAC tournament championship. That team made its second consecutive trip to the South Regional and landed four players on the All-South Region team, including All-American catcher Buck Gordon. The following year, Kendall directed the 1996 team to a school-record 27 wins and a 16-0 ODAC mark. The team set a league record for conference wins and became only the second team in school history to go through league play with a perfect record. Bridgewater proceeded to win all three of its ODAC Tournament games to earn Kendall an unprecedented sixth tournament title. The Eagles made their third trip to the NCAAs under Kendall during the 1999 season, finishing with a 26-19 overall mark and an 11-5 ODAC record. BC won its first-ever NCAA regional game, defeating Methodist, 16-6.

In 2000, the Eagles established a new school record for victories by finishing the season with a 28-14 record. Bridgewater finished the 2001 season with a 26-16 overall record and won the ODAC tournament to earn a trip to the NCAA South Regional. Kendall was named the ODAC’s Coach of the Year. In 2002, the Eagles claimed the ODAC regular season crown with a 13-2-1 record and then won the tournament title to earn another trip to the NCAA tournament. Kendall was once again named ODAC Coach of the Year. The Eagles lost to eventual regional champion Christopher Newport in the first round of regional play and was eliminated by Methodist, a team that had been ranked No. 1 in the nation in the Division III baseball poll for most of the 2002 season. In 2006, the Eagles reached the 30-win plateau for the first time in college history, finishing with a 32-14-1 record. The Eagles finished first in the ODAC regular season race and received an atlarge bid to the NCAA Division III tournament. In 2007, the Eagles won the ODAC tournament tto earn another trip to NCAA regional play and last year, the team finished with a 24-17- record. Kendall is an active member of the American Baseball Coaches Association and has participated on the NCAA Division III South Region Selection Committee in previous seasons. He has also served as the chairman for the ABCA Division III South Region AllAmerican Selection Committee and as the region’s representative on the 1997 Division III Championship game committee. In addition to his duties as head baseball coach and Director of Athletics, Kendall is an assistant professor in Bridgewater’s Department of Health and Physical Education and holds a Master’s of Science in Education from James Madison University. He lives in Bridgewater with his wife, LeAnn. They have two daughters Brooke, a BC graduate, and Kelly, now a student at Bridgewater.

Ben Spotts, Assistant Coach/Recruiting Coordinator Former Bridgewater baseball standout Ben Spotts is beginning his 14th year as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at his alma mater. A three-year starter at first base, Spotts was an integral part of BC’s NCAA tournament teams in 1995 and ‘96 and earned second-team All-ODAC honors in 1997 after hitting .344 his senior season. He was also chosen to the 1995 All-ODAC tournament team after collecting seven hits in 14 at-bats during the Eagles’ championship run, and finished his playing career with 111 hits and a .323 lifetime average. In addition to his recruiting duties, Spotts is heavily involved with the team’s hitters, outfielders and corner players. Spotts works in the college’s athletic department as the compliance officer. During the summers of 2003 and 2004, Spotts served as an assistant coach for the Waynesboro Generals in the Valley Baseball League. A native of Fishersville, Va., Spotts graduated in 1997 with a degree in History & Political Science. He also holds a masters of science in kinesiology from James Madison University. He married the former Angie Yohe, a 1998 Bridgewater graduate, in the summer of 1999. The couple reside in Verona, with their daughter Landon and son, Brady.

Alex Hogge Volunteer Assistant Coach Former Bridgewater College player Alex Hogge joins the Eagles staff this season as a volunteer assistant coach. Hogge played four years for the Eagles, graduating in 2011. As a senior, he caught 16 gaems for the Eagles and hit for a .261 average. Hogge will coach first base on game days.
