BRIDGEWATER, Va. – After showing improvement during the 2011 season, the Bridgewater Eagles women’s lacrosse team is set to continue their improvements under second-year head coach Kim Lowry when a new season opens on March 3 at Frostburg State. Last season, the Eagles notched six wins, including three conference victories. Of the team’s 10 losses, three came by three goals or less, including a one-goal loss to Virginia Wesleyan and an overtime loss to Ferrum. Bridgewater returns all-conference selection Taylor Chamberlain to the mix in 2012, to go along with seniors Megan Bach and Jenny Logan.

Midfielders Bridgewater enters the 2012 season with a variety of options in the midfield, with Bach and Logan returning to pace the pack. Bach was IWLCA Honor Roll selection last season after starting in all 16 games. The Manchester, Md. native was tied for third on the team a year ago with 32 goals and dished out a team-high 14 assists. “Megan is a consistent presence on both sides of the ball; she is a true leader and embodies the pride of our team,” said Lowry. Senior Jenny Logan also returns to the fold after a solid rookie season last year as a junior. Logan, a Luray, Va. native, scored four goals and tallied five assists in her first season with the program to go along with scooping 29 ground balls. “We are looking for Jenny to build tremendously from last year. She is comfortable now and her presence will not go unnoticed by the opposition,” Lowry added. Aside from the returning seniors, Lowry also returns a plethora of sophomores and freshmen to the mix. Sophomore Peggy Russell returns after seeing a limited role last season. Russell saw action in just seven games as a freshman.

Attackers Chamberlain returns to lead the attackers after leading the Eagles in scoring last season with 44 goals and 10 assists. Her 44 goals placed the Finksburg, Md. native in a tie for 12th in the conference in goals scored. “I’m looking forward to seeing Taylor step up into more of a dynamic role this season. She has a year of quality minutes under her belt and I expect to see her quarterbacking our offense,” said Lowry. Along with Chamberlain, the Eagles will look to a Sophomore Taylor Chamberlain returns to the fold in trio of relatively inexperienced players on the front line. 2012 after turning in an all-conference season in 2011. Sophomore Katie Freeman returns to the fold after seeing action in eight games last season and is joined by freshmen Jordyn Hutchins and Alissa Miller. Freeman netted five goals and an assist during her rookie season and netted her first career goal in an 1816 loss to Ferrum. “Unfortunately, Katie was injured most of last season so we weren’t able to utilize her as much as we would’ve liked. She is deceptive in the eight meter and has a lethal shot,” commented Lowry. Hutchins and Miller join the fray after turning in solid high school careers. Hutchins, a Jefferson, Md. product, was a two-time first team all-conference selection and was a captain at Brunswick High School. Miller, a native of Hagerstown, Md., competed at Hagerstown High School and comes from a family that has produced professional athletes in football and a player on the U.S. National Lacrosse team. “Both Alissa and Jordyn will provide us with good minutes on the attacking end. I’m looking forward to them getting comfortable with our system and really excelling for us offensively,” said Lowry.

2012 Season Preview Lowry brought in a number of freshmen in the midfield with three newcomers joining the squad in Paige Hennessey, Sarah Conner and Caroline Augsburger. Hennessey comes to Bridgewater after a solid career at Dover High School in Delaware. The First State native tallied 86 goals and netted 15 assists during her outstanding high school career. Augsburger and Conner join the mix for the first time after both competed for the women’s soccer team in the fall. “I’m very excited about the new faces in our midfield. Paige has great stick control and poise under pressure. Sarah and Caroline are true athletes with great field awareness and game sense,” Lowry noted. Defenders On the defensive end, the Eagles return a pair of contributors from last season’s team and also bring in a talented pair of freshmen. Junior Savannah Key returns to the fold in the backfield after playing in all 16 games a season ago. Key, a Knoxville, Md. native, netted five goals on the year and dished out nine assists during her sophomore season. ‘Savannah is our utility player, we feel equally comfortable with her anchoring our defense or running the midfield,” said Lowry. Sophomore Malinda Britt also returns after not competing a Senior Megan Back returns to the fold as a capseason ago due to injury. tain in 2012 after a solid season in 2011. The Eagles welcome a pair of newcomers to the fray as Brittany Lanahan and Jen Pivar are set to compete this season. Lanahan was a two-time All-IAAM conference selection at Baltimore Lutheran, while Pivar after being a second team all-conference choice at Francis Scott Key High School in Union Bridge, Md. “Both Brittany and Jen have bought in to our defensive scheme and don’t play like newcomers. We expect both of them to contribute to our up-tempo style defense,” commented Lowry. Goalkeepers Bridgewater returns its starting goalkeeper from a season ago and also welcomes two newcomers to the mix. Junior Caitlin Boles returns to the mix after posting a solid first season in 2011. Boles started all 16 games in the cage during her first year with the program and posted a 13.48 GAA along the way. The Charlottesville, Va. native also notched a career-high 11 saves twice on the year, most recently in a 12-11 loss against Virginia Wesleyan. “(Caitlin) Boles is the backbone of our defense. We are looking for her to pick up right where she left off against Virginia Wesleyan last year and make the opposition fight tooth and nail for a goal,” said Lowry. Sophomore Lindsay McDole also joins the fray after competing for the women’s soccer team in the fall and is joined by newcomer Laura Reynolds. “(Lindsay) McDole and (Laura) Reynolds have stepped up immediately in just the preseason. We expect their tactical game to continue to improve, making them both viable options between the pipes,” commented Lowry. On March 3, the Eagles open regular season play with a trip to Frostburg State. Bridgewater opens the season on a five-game road trip, including a matchup on March 8 in Myrtle Beach, S.C. with SUNY-IT. The season-opening road trip ends with the conference opener on March 13 at Randolph before the Eagles finally come back to the Jopson Lacrosse Complex to open the home slate on March 17 against the Quakers of Guilford College.
