Coaches
With the team’s highest roster number in some time consisting of six freshmen, Bridgewater College head coach Marty Perry will be looking to some veteran players and talented newcomers to propel the men’s tennis team to new heights in 2012. Perry enters his first season with the program and has as much time in the Crimson and Gold as more than half of his team and returns just one senior to the team of 11. Last season, Bridgewater finished with a 14-7 overall record, but lost 48 of its combined 79 singles victories from a season ago due to graduation. Bridgewater also earned the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) SportsJunior Peter Hawkins returns to the mix for the manship Award. Last season, Floyd rolled up a 14-5 record in dual match action, including a 9-2 mark at the number four singles post. Floyd also notched 14 combined doubles victories during the 2011 season. “Brent is a tremendous leader and competitor so far this season. He is a great athlete and will be a major contributor in both singles and doubles. He works incredibly hard and is well respected by the team. I’m sure that I’ll be sad to see him graduate after only coaching him for one year,” said Perry. In the junior class, Bridgewater returns a pair of players, including 2011 second team All-ODAC selection Peter Hawkins. Hawkins was outstanding for the Eagles during his second year with the program. The Silver Spring, Md. native went 14-7 on the year for the Eagles and ended the season on a seven-match winning streak. Along with Hawkins, Drew Hubble returns to the fray after seeing limited action a season ago. “Pete has a tremendous upside,” commented Perry. “He competes as hard as anyone on the team and in my opinion would be a tough out at any position in singles. Pete is in great shape and has the stamina to grind out long matches while breaking down his opponent. He has been and will continue to be one of our top players in the line-up.” “Drew has shown tremendous improvement since the fall. He is a total team player and loves competition. He is very good agility for being 6’6” and will fight to the end,” Perry added. Bridgewater’s sophomore class is chocked full of transfers as a pair of newcomers join the mix after spending their first collegiate season elsewhere. Sophomore Sam Churchill comes to Bridgewater after spending his first season at conference-rival Randolph. “Sam has been a pleasant surprise for the team so far. He’s coming in for his second year of college tennis ready to do whatever he can to help the team. I’ve noticed strong improvement from

Perry’s freshman class hails from four different states: Georgia, Illinois, North Carolina and Virginia. Three of the freshmen are from the Old Dominion State. Bridgewater’s three freshmen from Virginia are all Northern Virginia products as Mike Cable, Robert Haskiell and Brandon Larsen join the mix. Mike, Brandon and Robert have become all become integral parts of the team,” said Perry. North Carolina product Robert Belton comes to Bridgewater after a highly successful senior season at Mt. Airy High School. Belton was the state runner-up in doubles action en route to earning all-state honors. “Belton has been a great addition to the team. He is a hard worker and has a great attitude. He is a strong doubles player and has the ability to help the team this year,” commented Perry. Lynn joins the mix after earning a trip to the state championship meet on three occasions in his native Illinois. The St. Charles, Ill. native competed at Elgin Academy. “Christian has a tremendous upside. He has good power of both sides and his serve is a weapon. He works hard and is very competitive,” said Perry. Finally, Georgia product Evan Stack joins the mix after an outstanding career at North Cobb High School. Stack was ranked in the top 40 in the state of Georgia’s VSTA rankings and competed for a North Cobb squad that reached the “Five-A” state championships on two occasions. “Stack is one of our top newcomers. He is a very skilled tennis player and also has a high level of athletic ability. is sigles game translates very well into doubles. He’s been a tremendous addition to the program,” said Perry. Bridgewater hosted an ODAC Tournament matchup for the first time in program history a season ago and reached the conference semifinals after a convincing victory over Virginia Wesleyan. Washington and Lee and Hampden-Sydney have duked it out for the conference title as of late, but Perry feels that the Eagles could continue to make significant strides to play a role in the ODAC’s traditionally two-man race. The Eagles open the 2012 spring season on February 26 when the team travels to Christopher Newport. Martin Perry Head Coach

Cleveland State ‘98 On August 16, 2011, Martin Perry was named head coach of the Bridgewater College men’s and women’s tennis programs. A three-time NCAA Division III National Coach of the Year recipient, Perry spent the last eight-plus years as the head men’s and women’s coach at national power, The University of Chicago. Perry brings a laundry list of accolades to Bridgewater, including being named the Wilson/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division III Women’s Tennis National Coach of the Year in 2009 and 2010 and being named the National Coach of the Year on the men’s side by the college tennis governing body this past season. In 2011, Perry coached University of Chicago women’s tennis player Kendra Higgins to the NCAA finals in singles, and led the Maroons women’s team to a fourth place finish in the NCAA Championships for the third straight season. Higgins teamed up with Chrissy Hu on the doubles side to claim back-to-back NCAA titles in 2009 and 2010. In the highly competitive University Athletic Association (UAA), Perry coached four-straight UAA Rookie of the Year recipients and dethroned national power Emory University in 2010 when the Maroons women claimed the UAA championship. This marked the first time in more than two decades that Emory did not claim the conference crown. Overall, Perry coached 15 All-Americans during his time at the University of Chicago and turned in the nation’s numberone-ranked women’s recruiting class at the Division III level in 2008, according to tennisrecruiting.com. In 2010, Perry’s men’s recruiting class was ranked third in the nation at the Division III level. erry opened his collegiate coaching career with a nearly fouryear stint at the College of William & Mary as an assistant on the men’s team. During his time with the Tribe, Perry assisted with the day-to-day operation of a William & Mary squad that was consistently in the top 50 of Division I men’s tennis. In 1999 and 2000, Perry served as the assistant director of the ITA Summer National Championships in Williamsburg. Perry earned his Professional Tennis Registry professional rating in 1994 and completed the USTA High Performance program in January of 2006 in Boca Raton, Fla. Perry received his bachelor of arts in history from Cleveland State University in 1998.

Strength and Conditioning Maintaining top physical condition is the job of the strength and conditioning staff. The goal of the strength and conditioning staff is to undertake reduce the risk of athletic injury, develop the force potential (strength and power) of each athlete, enhance the specific movement patterns related to their activity and address the energy needs for each sport. Ultimately the staff intends to maximize the athletic potential of each of our student athletes.

College athletics has evolved to the point where total physical preparation is necessary to be successful. Bridgewater employs a fivemember athletic training staff. Under the tutilege of Director Barbara Long, the group of Sarah Cook, Chase Hale, Ellen Hicks and Scott Powers serve as Assistant Athletic Trainers for the entire Bridgewater College Athletics Department.

Bridgewater employs five Certified Athletic Trainers. Each sport has an ATC that is assigned to their sport, providing nearly full-time coverage to each of the Eagles’ 20 sports teams. Bridgewater’s ATCs have more than 70 years of cumulative professional experience in high schools, colleges, outpatient orthopedic clinics, medical sales, physician extenders and elite sports with the US Olympic Training Center and USA Wrestling Federation.
