Series Info: Before the arrival of Michael Clark, Emory & Henry absolutely dominated this series, as the Eagles won only one game prior to the Clark era. Emory & Henry owns the all-time series at a 27-7-1 mark, while BC head coach Michael Clark has a 6-8 record against the Wasps. Clark will look for his 100th win on Saturday when the Eagles play the Wasps for the 36th time and 34th consecutive year.

Countdown to Kickoff Bridgewater has registered 10 rushing touchdowns on the year, by com parison, the Eagles only hit paydirt on the ground 12 times all year in 2008. Offensively, the Eagles have turned in nine plays on the year of 50 yards or more. Three have been on the ground, two have been through the air, and four have been special teams plays. In Saturday’s 40-9 stomping of Guilford, the Eagles registered eight plays of 20 yards or more. On three other occasions this year the Eagles have matched that number in a game. T.J. Montague (#7) leads the Eagles in tackles on the year with 39 stops. T.J. has also registered 2.5 tackles for a loss. Bridgewater’s defense has only forced six turnovers on the year while the offense has coughed the ball up 17 times. On the ground the Eagles are averaging five yards per rush. Junior running back Thomas Tate has crossed the century mark on the ground four times on the year in only six games. Special teams was a point of emphasis for head coach Michael Clark this season and the Eagles have answered the call with three special teams touchdowns this year (two punt returns, one kickoff return) Senior defensive back Tony Konate leads the Eagles with two blocked kicks this season. Konate is the top sprinter in the ODAC and uses his speed off the edge to his advantage. Bridgewater is the #1 team in the ODAC in multiple team categories includ ing pass efficiency defense, punt return average, yards per rush and passing

Emory & Henry Coach Don Montgomery

Emory & Henry head coach Don Montgomery enters his fifth season at the helm of the Wasps football program. Montgomery is no stranger to the pinnacle of D3 football after being a long-time assistant under Mount Union legend Larry Kehres who is the only coach in collegiate football history to top Knute Rockne’s .881 winning percentage (.925). At the time of Montgomery’s departure, Mount union had reached the national semi-finals in ten straight seasons, winning seven national titles in twelve seasons. Montgomery quickly jettisoned the Wasps to the top of the ODAC with a tri-championship last season. A 1977 gradute of Mount Union, Montgomery boasts a 17-23 mark with the Wasps, including a 2-2 mark against Bridgewater.

Scouting the Opponent Two words will tell you everything you need to know about Emory & Henry: Caleb Jennings. Jennings leads the Wasps with 673 yards on the year to go along with eight touchdowns. Statistically speaking, Jennings is very similar to Thomas Tate, with both backs averaging over five yards per play. At the quarterback position, Drew Piscopo is putting up mediocre numbers with 648 yards gained through the air on the year. Piscopo has tallied three touchdows to go along with three interceptions. On the defensive side of the ball, Shane Wicks leads a stingy E&H defense. Wicks has turned in a team high 65 tackles on the year including 4.5 for a loss. Right behind Wicks is Ed Smith, who is the team’s coleader in TFLs (5.0) and sacks (3.5). In the kicking game, Wasps place kicker Matt Turchin is struggling, making only two of six field goal attempts. Turchin is 14-of-15 on PAT attempts. Punter T.J. Frazier is averaging over 41 yards per punt and has pinned eight punts inside the 20 and has boomed six punts for over 50 yards

Emory & Henry Last Week ASHLAND, Va. - Emory & Henry struggled against a consistent and persistent Randolph-Macon team, giving the Yellow Jackets another reason to celebrate on their homecoming. Randolph-Macon, last year’s ODAC champions, utilized a strong running game that gobbled up time, to keep the Wasps on their heals and working their own strategy. The Yellow Jackets went into halftime with two touchdowns and up 13-0. They added field goals in each of the remaining quarters. The Wasps found themselves with good field position on many possessions, and often within scoring position. But the Yellow Jacket defense, which worked as methodically as their offense, kept them Wasps from the endzone. Randolph-Macon held E&H runningback Caleb Jennings to 48 yards on 14 carries. On defense, Shane Wicks led with seven individual tackles and assisted on seven more. Keith Taylor provided five solo tackles and assisted on one. Derrick Patterson had two solo tackles, including one sack and one tackle for loss.

Emory & Henry Game - D3Football Game to Watch From D3Football.com - Few conferences are as wide open or require as much guesswork in 2009 as the ODAC, but with the Eagles and Wasps signaling the return of some key performers from 2008, this game could very well separate the Nos. 1 and 2 teams (though Hampden-Sydney should not be discounted as a top contender as well in the ODAC). The youth from last year’s Bridgewater team is a year older, a year wiser and a year better. The Wasps will get to benefit from many returners on offense as well as preseason All-American linebacker Evin O’Sullivan on defense.

Back In Style

Senior running back David Argaud was supposed to miss the remainder of his senior season with a torn ACL. Keyword - supposed. Argaud chose to forgo surgery and finish out his playing career with the Eagles and made a huge impact on Saturday’s 40-9 victory over Guilford. The senior returned the opening kickoff 50-plus yards to setup the opening score, before busting off a 93 yard return to the house on the next kick. Argaud’s 93 yard return was the longest return for a player in the ODAc this season and the eighth longest in BC history and in D3 this season. His 146 yards were the sixth most for a player this season, while his 73 yard average per return was the 11th highest by a player in D3 on the year in a single game.

First and Second Down Efficiency

Bridgewater’s offense has picked up chunks of yards on first and second down, making for many mangable third down situations. On first down the Eagles have picked up 10 yards or more on 31 occasions. Combined, the Eagles are 25.2% on first and second down. The offense has set up 21 third and short situations on the year, of which BC has converted 11-of-21 for a 52% conversion percentage. BC’s conversion percentage falls to 26% in third and long situations.

Cole and Tichacek Moving Up TE Lists

Senior’s Chris Tichacek and Dallas Cole are slowly moving up the career tight ends list at BC with the two tight ends in a neck and neck race. Senior Dallas Cole has cracked the top ten all-time tight ends list according to yardage. Tichacek is in sole possession of six all-time with 250 yards. Tichacek needs a 25 yards to move into fifth place. Cole’s 211 career yards puts him in sole possession of ninth place all-time Cole only needs 24 yards to move into eighth place on the alltime list.

Heads or Tails

Through six games, the Bridgewater Eagles have won the opening toss once, with this past week’s 40-9 win over Guilford being the lone time for BC to win the toss. When BC receives the opening kick the Eagles are 2-0, when the Eagles kickoff, the squad is 2-2.

October Stuff During the Michael Clark era, BC has played 52 games in the month of October. During Clark’s first five years, the Eagles had a 6-14 record during the tenth month of the year. In the 21st century, Clark has amassed a ridiculous 26-6 record during the month of October. During the 2000-2005 stretch, Bridgewater amassed a perfect 21-0 record during the month of October. Head Coach Michael Clark

Michael Clark begins his 15th season as head coach of the Bridgewater football program and his 30th year as a collegiate coach. Born in Youngstown, Ohio, Clark is from a football family. His father Joe Clark, whom he played high school football for at Cincinnati Indian Hill, is in the Ohio High School Hall of Fame in the state where he picked up 237 high school victories. Clark and the Eagles have won a higher percentage of football games than any other college team in the state of Virginia in the 21st century at an 83-22 tally. Under Clark’s direction, BC has participated in 16 postseason games and has won two NCAA South Region Championships and five Old Dominion Athletic Conference titles. BC’s postseason experience peaked in 2001 when it finished its best season in school history with a 12-1 record, losing in the “Stagg Bowl,” the Division III national championship game, to perennial power Mount Union, 30-27. Clark started his coaching career as the defensive line and linebackers coach at Murray State University in 1980 and helped Frank Beamer’s Racers to 44 wins in five seasons and a stay in the Division I-AA (FCS) national poll for 25 straight weeks. After a stint as wide receivers coach at his alma mater, Cincinnati, from 1986-87, Clark rejoined Beamer at Virginia Tech in 1988 serving as the Hokies’ defensive coordinator for five seasons. In 1993, Clark moved to Virginia Military Institute serving as as the Keydets’ defensive coordinator in 1993 and quarterbacks coach in 1994 before being named the 14th Bridgewater head coach on January 16, 1995. Clark earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Cincinnati in English Literature and was a four-year letter winner in football as a defensive back. He helped the Bearcats to a 9-2 record and a top 20 national ranking during the 1976 season. At graduation, he was given the school’s “Mr. Bearcat Award” as the outstanding graduating male senior at the University of Cincinnati in 1980. Currently, Clark acts as the AFCA conference-coaching representative. He is a voting member of the AFCA-USA Today coaches poll, and recently completed a term as Chairman on the NCAA College Football Rules Committee. Clark lives in Bridgewater with his wife Sharon. The couple has two daughters, Megan and Erin. Megan is a 2004 graduate of Bridgewater who received her Masters Degree in Public Health from George Washington University and works for the Food and Drug Administration. Megan resides in Alexandria, Va. with her husband J.D. Velez. Erin is a Mathematics graduate from Christopher Newport University who works for the US Army. • • • • • • • • • • • •

Last Time They Met Emory & Henry 19 - Bridgewater 14 Bridgewater, Va. (Jopson Field) October 25, 2008 BRIDGEWATER, Va. - Emory & Henry took last week’s momentum with them to Bridgewater College this afternoon and were rewarded with an enormous win over the Eagles, 19-14. The Wasps kept Eagle fans in shock all afternoon, and left them with the bitter taste of defeat. Emory & Henry (4-3) moved to 2-1 in the ODAC after knocking off Bridgewater on the road this afternoon. The Wasps were big on both sides of the ball today, outgaining Bridgewater 301-217 in total offense. Emory & Henry permitted Bridgewater to only gain 76 rushin yards this afternoon and held the Eagles to be 4 of 12 on third down conversions. Darren Richardson took the Bridgewater kickoff and returned it for 28 yards to open play for Emory & Henry. On second and seven, Brent McDonald completed an 18-yard pass to J. Hawkins, which moved the ball into Eagle. McDonald came up with another long pass of 21 yards to Cain Ringstaff that put Emory & Henry on the Bridgewater 14-yard line. Caleb Jennings finished the opening drive off with a 14 yard touchdown run to put the Wasps up 6-0, making an early statement to hosts, Bridgewater College. Luke Hawk unfortunately miss-kicked his extra-point, so Emory & Henry were only able to be ahead 6-0 with 12:22 to play in the first quarter. Bridgewater took the ensuing kickoff and marched down the field looking to answer Emory & Henry’s opening drive. Bridgewater’s quarterback, Vince Reese played really well on the Eagle’s opening offensive series and helped Bridgewater overcome some difficult situations on their first drive. Reese completed a 16-yard pass to put Bridgewater on the Emory & Henry 30 yard line, which brought roars from the home crowd who were in shock after the Wasps’ scoring drive. Bridgewater looked to be in prime position to answer Emory & Henry, but the Wasps stopped the Eagles on defense and forced a field goal attempt that hit the upright. Bridgewater was able to get on the board after holding Emory & Henry on its next possession, and forcing a safety, cutting the Emory & Henry lead 6-2 with 6:04 to play in the first quarter. Both teams felt each other out for the remainder of the opening quarter and Emory & Henry led 6-2 going into the second quarter. After a big 27-yard loss for Emory & Henry, Bridgewater took over the ball on the Wasps’ 13 yard line with 10:10 to play in the half. Emory & Henry stood their ground as they have done all season on defense, and forced Bridgewater to kick a 29-yard field goal that cut the Emory & Henry lead to 6-5 with 8:36 to play in the first half. Bridgewater forced Emory & Henry to punt on their next offensive possession, but the Wasps’ defense held strong and enabled the Emory & Henry offense to receive the ball again. Emory & Henry fans were cheering loudly after their team increased its lead, but the cheering came to an abrupt halt after Bridgewater took the ensuing kickoff and returned it for a touchdown. David Argaud returned the Emory & Henry kickoff 85 yards for the touchdown, silencing Emory fans and trimming the lead to 12-11 with 1:52 to play in the half. After a couple of big rushes by Caleb Jennings and Cain Ringstaff, the Wasps moved the ball for a first down on their own 42 yard line. Brent McDonald hit Jennings with a pass out of the back field that Jennings took for 47 yards, giving Emory & Henry a 19-11 lead. The Wasps came out strong on defense in the second half, and needed it because their offense was unable to score any more points on Bridgewater’s defense. Emory & Henry relied on their ODAC leading defense to seal the game for them, and the defense came up big for the Wasps. Bridgewater’s only scoring in the second half came off of a 33-yard field goal by William Davis that cut the Emory & Henry lead to 19-14 with 6:21 to go in the third quarter. Emory & Henry answered Bridgewater with a solid offensive drive that ate up 4:16 off of the clock. The drive ended on a sour note after a holding penalty forced the Wasps to punt, putting pressure back on the Emory & Henry defense. Emory & Henry held Bridgewater on its next possession and forced the Eagles to punt back to the Wasps early in the fourth quarter. Neither team could find a way to break through the opposing team’s defense, causing a stalemate for the remainder of the quarter. Fortunately, this stalemate enabled Emory & Henry to come away with a needed road victory over a tough Bridgewater team that was also in dire need of a win. (courtesy of EHC Sports Information)

Eagles Win Shootout with Averett in Season Opener BRIDGEWATER, Va. - After 78 points and over 750 total yards of offense between the two teams, the Bridgewater Eagles (1-0) football squad won a shootout over the Averett Cougars (0-1) by a 44-34 margin in today's season opener at Jopson Field. Bridgewater opened the scoring early by marching downfield in two minutes and 20 seconds after receiving the opening kickoff. BC's five play, 45 yard drive was capped off by an 18-yard strike from junior quarterback Hagan Driskell to junior wide receiver Tyler Beiler as the Eagles got on board early at a 7-0 tally. Three minutes and 28 seconds later, after a 60-yard drive stalled out at the 14 yard line, sophomore Will Davis booted a 31 yard kick through the uprights to put BC ahead by a 10-0 score. After the ensuing Averett and BC drives stalled out, senior Tim Newman's punt gave Averett good field position at their own 44. Three plays later, backup quarterback Cody Ladutko made the first major mistake of the game for either team as he tossed a ball into the waiting arms of sophomore defensive lineman Mike Clements. Clements took the ball 44 yards to the house to put Bridgewater up by a 17-0 margin with three and change to play in the first frame. After jumping out to 17 points in the first as the offense, defense and kicking team each got BC on the scoreboard, the return unit got a score of their own as junior Rudy Jackson took a punt 83 yards to pay dirt to give Bridgewater a commanding 24-0 lead with 9:05 to play in the opening half. With the game being all BC early, Averett would respond with a score of their own as Brian Daniels capped off a six play, 45 yard drive with a oneyard touchdown burst to cut the Eagles lead to 24-7. Bridgewater would then answer Averett's score with a four yard scamper from junior Thomas Tate to put BC back up 24 at a 31-7 score. Averett would tally one more score before the teams headed to the locker room when with 60 ticks left on the clock, Dontavious Watson scampered for a dozen yards and an Averett score. The ensuing PAT would be missed by the Cougars with the score remaining 31-13 at the break. Out of the halftime intermission, Averett's Antwan Hughes would burst for a nine-yard touchdown to get the Cougars within 11 as Bridgewater held on to a 31-20 lead. BC got the final stanza started when Driskell connected with Dallas Cole for his second touchdown pass of the day, putting BC back ahead at a 38-20 margin. Averett would answer five and a half minutes later when a breakdown in BC's coverage led to a 60 yard strike to Anthony Squillini, cutting Bridgewater's lead to 10 after Phillip Kwiatkowski's two-point conversion attempt connected with Steve Oristian, bringing the lead down to a 38-28 BC advantage. Bridgewater would effectively put the game away when Driskell hit Jackson for a 19 yard strike with 2:17 to go, to give Bridgewater a 44-28 after Davis' PAT failed. Averett would close out the scoring as the clock expired when Ladutko scampered 11 yards to the endzone, to end the ball game at a 44-34 score. Despite outscoring the Cougars by 10, Bridgewater was outgained by a 444-to-320 margin. On the ground, Bridgewater was led by Tate's 52 yards, with the junior also picking up a touchdown as BC tallied up 169 yards on the ground. Averett pounded out 189 yards on the ground and was led by Watson's 63 yards on nine runs. Through the air, Driskell wrapped the game up with a 15-of-27 performance for 151 yards. Driskell tossed three touchdowns and was picked off once. For Averett, Kwiatkowski mainly nickel and dimed the Eagles as he was 18-of-40 for 205 yards and a touchdown to go along with two interceptions. Beiler led the Eagles in receiving with four catches for 57 yards and a touchdown, while Squillini led the Cougars with five catches for 85 yards and a touchdown. Darius Burrus led all tacklers with eight stops, while Averett's Zane Cooper picked up a team-high seven tackles. The difference in the game came down to Bridgewater's defense forcing turnovers as the squad picked the Cougars off three times on the day.

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. - Three BC interceptions turned into 13 Hampden-Sydney (5-0, 2-0 ODAC) points as the Bridgewater Eagles (3-2, 0-1 ODAC) football squad opened up ODAC play with a 19-0 loss to the Tigers on the road at Everett Stadium. Hampden-Sydney marched downfield in a hurry on its opening drive of the game to take a 6-0 lead off of a six-yard strike to Anthony Mancini from fifth-year quarterback Corey Sedlar. HSC’s PAT attempt was wide, keeping the score at 6-0. Following a pair of Bridgewater drives, the Hampden-Sydney offense began with excellent field position at its 45, but the Bridgewater defense held strong, giving the offense the ball back at the BC 46. After Hampden-Sydney took a 6-0 lead into the second quarter, the Eagles would answer with a methodical drive, before a Driskell interception in the endzone gave the Tigers the ball back at their own 12. Hampden-Sydney then capitalized on the BC miscue with a 17 play, 88 yard drive, capped off by a Sedlar keeper, to take a 13-0 lead which is where the game remained until halftime. Both teams saw little offense established on their opening drives of the second half, before the Eagles offense came alive on its second drive of the third quarter. Bridgewater moved to the HSC 11 yard line before Driskell tossed his second interception of the game, to give the Tigers the ball back. Hampden-Sydney made the Eagles pay on the turnover, when Sedlar connected on his second touchdown pass of the day to give the Tigers a 19-0 lead with four minutes and change to play in the third quarter. The Tigers two-point conversion attempt failed, keeping the score at 19-0. Bridgewater moved inside the red-zone again, but a Driskell pass was picked off, stalling out the Eagles drive, keeping the score at 19-0, which is where things would stay for the remainder of the game as the Eagles fell in their ODAC opener. On the day, Bridgewater’s defense held the fast-break Hampden-Sydney in check, by holding the Tigers over 200 yards under their season average. BC’s offense was anemic in the first half before putting together a 200 plus yard second half, but was unable to find the endzone, despite a number of red-zone chances. Hampden-Sydney outgained the Eagles by a 323-280 clip after outgaining BC by a 199-50 margin in the first half. On the ground, Thomas Tate went over 100 yards yet again with a gamehigh 103 yards on 20 carries. Through the air, Driskell was 13-of-32 for 118 yards and three costly interceptions. On the receiving end, Tyler Beiler led the Eagles with six catches for 51 yards. With his six catches, Beiler now has 70 career receptions, placing him in 14th place all-time. TJ Montague led the Eagles defense with a game-high 10 tackles. For Hampden-Sydney, Kirk Rohle led the way on the ground with 84 yards on 18 runs. Through the air, Sedlar finished the day at 26-of-36 for 210 yards and two touchdowns. Sedlar set the Hampden-Sydney career passing record on the day with 210 yards. On the receiving end, Mancini led the way with six grabs for 78 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Trevor Ikwild led the Tigers defense with nine tackles including two for a loss. The shutout against the Eagles was the first for the team since a 66-0 loss in the playoffs to Mount Union on Dec. 13, 2003. The last time the Eagles were shut out by Hampden-Sydney was in 1980 by a similar 20-0 tally. (courtesy of BC Sports Information)

BRIDGEWATER Football

BRIDGEWATER, Va. - Junior running back Thomas Tate crossed the century mark for the third straight game as the Bridgewater Eagles (4-2, 1-1 ODAC) found their rhythm on offense en route to a 40-9 route over the visiting Guilford Quakers (1-5, 0-2 ODAC) on Homecoming day at Jopson Field. Tate’s 157 yard afternoon marked the fourth 100-plus yard game for the Staunton, Va. native in just six career games. BC got things started early with a Tate 15 yard run which was set up by a 53 yard kick return by senior David Argaud, putting the Eagles up 6-0 following a missed PAT with 14:32 left in the opening frame. Bridgewater forced a three and out on the first Guilford possession of the game, giving BC the ball back at its own 23 following a D.J. Wilson punt. Tate then scampered 77 yards to the endzone to give the Eagles a 12-0 advantage. Sophomore Tyler Kelly missed his second PAT in a row to keep the game at a 12-0 margin. At a 12-0 deficit after just three Bridgewater offensive plays, the Guilford offense was able to manufacture a nine play drive of its own, which culminated with a 27 yard field goal splitting the uprights as the BC lead was cut to a 12-3 gap. The game would remain 12-3 through the remainder of the first quarter before the Eagles opened the second quarter scoring with an 11 yard strike from Hagan Driskell to Argaud, putting Bridgewater ahead 18-3. BC would convert on a fade pass to Rudy Jackson on the two-point conversion attempt to give the Eagles a 20-3 advantage with 8:12 left in the first half. Guilford answered two minutes later when a sneak by quarterback Billy Watkins bridged the gap to bring the Quakers to within 11, after the Guilford PAT was missed, keeping the score at 20-9. Arguad put BC back on the scoreboard immediately with a 93 yard kickoff return, giving the Eagles a 26-9 advantage after another Kelly PAT failed to split the uprights. Argaud’s kick return was the longest kick return for the Eagles this year. Bridgewater’s defense then forced another Guilford three-and-out, putting the ball back in the Eagles hands with less than five minutes remaining in the opening half. Seven plays later, Tate found the back of the endzone again, with an eight yard burst, giving the Eagles a 32-9 lead. Sophomore kicker Will Davis would convert BC’s first PAT of the day, giving BC a 33-9 lead, which is where things remained as the game headed to the intermission. With the game in hand, the Eagles tacked on one more score late in the third quarter on a 32 yard strike from Driskell to Tyler Beiler to give BC a 40-9 lead, which is where the scoring would end, giving Bridgewater its first Old Dominion Athletic Conference victory of the year by a 40-9 margin. Tate led all runners on the day with his 157 yards. Tate’s three touchdowns and his 77 yard run are both team high’s for the Eagles in 2009. Through the air, Driskell led the way with 173 yards on 11-of-18 passing, to go along with two touchdown passes. BC got three quarterbacks into the game, with senior Vince Reese completing 2-of-5 passes and freshman Jacob Hutchinson completing his first career pass in the middle of the fourth quarter, as part of a 1-for-2 afternoon. On the receiving end, Patrick Smoot led all receivers with seven catches for 91 yards. Guilford was led on the ground by Earl Womble’s nine carries for 38 yards. Through the air, Billy Watkins threw for a game-high 184 yards on 17-of30 passing. BC outgained Guilford by a 422-280 clip and edged the Quakers by a 1817 margin in first downs. Bridgewater’s 422 yards of total offense was 100 yards above what the Guilford defense, ranked No. 3 in the ODAC coming into the game, was allowing on the year. Defensively, the Eagles were led by eight tackle performances from Seth Little and Scottie Littles. Guilford linebacker Richie Paul recorded a gamehigh 11 tackles to led all defenders. At halftime, the Eagles honored four newcomers to the BC Athletics Hall of Fame, with Nicoll Kenney, Dee Morris, Donald Mitchell and Chris Sizemore joining the 91 previous Hall of Fame inductees.
