The Coaches They Are a’Changin A number of coaching changes and new hires highlight a busy summer
Retirements, resignations and hiring highlighted an extremely busy summer for the athletic department as new coaches and directors were hired for six programs. During an abnormally busy late spring and early summer, the College announced the hiring of a new director of riding and head coaches in men’s and women’s tennis, men’s lacrosse, men’s soccer and women’s golf. Equestrian On July 14, Jerry Schurink became the program’s second director of riding, succeeding Sarah Irvine, who announced her retirement in February. Irvine led the Bridgewater riding program since its inception in 2000. Schurink comes to Bridgewater after a long and successful tenure at the University of Massachusetts. He became the director of riding at UMass in 1994 and in 1996 added the responsibility of coaching the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) riding team. From 2002-10, he was also the director of equine studies. In 2008, Schurink led the UMass IHSA team to the Region 3, Zone 1 title and a trip to the national show when his team defeated perennial riding power Mount Holyoke College for the zone title. Men’s and Women’s Tennis On August 15, Martin Perry was hired to succeed Conor Smith, who resigned to take the men’s tennis job at Bowdoin College, as the head men’s and women’s tennis coach. Perry, a three-time NCAA Division III National Coach of the Year, has spent the last eight-plus years as the head men’s and women’s coach at national power The University of Chicago. Perry brings a laundry list of accolades to Bridgewater, including being named the Wilson/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division III Women’s Tennis National Coach of the Year in 2009 and 2010 and being named the National Coach of the Year on the men’s side by the college tennis governing body this past season. In 2011, Perry coached University of Chicago women’s tennis player Kendra Higgins to the NCAA finals in singles, and led the Maroons women’s team to a fourth place finish in the NCAA Championships for the third straight season. Higgins teamed up with Chrissy Hu on the doubles side to claim back-to-back NCAA titles in 2009 and 2010. Men’s Lacrosse On June 22, William “Mic” Grant was named the College’s first head men’s lacrosse coach.Grant comes to Bridgewater after a excellent stint as the head coach of the Marywood University Pacers. Grant comes to Bridgewater after taking the Pacer men’s lacrosse team from a new program to a pair of conference title game (cont. pg. 11)

The Rising Has Been Witnessed Eagles women’s soccer team continues to make moves in the ODAC as head coach Mike Van Horn moves into year four
The Bridgewater College women's soccer team enters the 2011 season looking to take another step toward winning an ODAC championship. Coming off back-to-back winning seasons for the first time in program history, the Eagles are confident they are moving closer to contending with and defeating the top teams in the conference. Two years ago, the Eagles set a program record with 13 victories. A year ago, the team earned the No. 4 seed in the ODAC tournament and hosted a first-round game in the ODAC tournament for the first time. "We return a solid group of players who have experienced some success in the past two seasons," Bridgewater head coach Mike Van Horn said. "We played well last year against an extremely tough schedule. This season we will try to take another step forward with our program." Leading the returning players is senior Meghan Groos, a second-team All-ODAC pick in 2010. "She will be better this season with a year of experience under her belt at center-mid," said Van Horn. Joining Groos in the starting lineup will be second-team All-ODAC performers Jessica Palmer, Brittney Harris and Melanie Waters. Abby Dehoff, an honorable mention All-ODAC pick also returns. Palmer returns as a back but will assume a new role for the Eagles during her senior year. "We're going to try to play Jess outside so she we will be able to move forward and join the attack instead of just anchoring the defense," Van Horn explained. Harris, a junior, and Waters, a sophomore, give the Eagles firepower at the forward position. "We're looking for Brittney to find the back of the net early and often. She will also have an added role this season as she will play some in the midfield as well," said Van Horn. "We need Melanie to continue to grow as a player. We are going to need her to match her production from a year ago and take another step forward in her development." Dehoff, another talented offensive player, returns to the midfield. "We need Abby to get people involved and make us a more dynamic team. She will also be a threat on our set pieces again this season," Van Horn said. That's not the end of Bridgewater's returning talent as the Eagles return at least 10 more players with significant playing time a year ago. In goal, the Eagles will have four keepers vying for minutes. "The past three years we have had competition at that spot and this year will be no different,' said Van Horn. "We have three players returning and we have a freshman who can compete. We have talent at that position." In addition to the large group of returning players, Van Horn is bringing in another strong group of first-year players. "We have some people coming in who will contribute right away at key positions," said Bridgewater's head coach. "There are going to be some freshmen in the starting lineup and a lot of the freshmen are going to see playing time. This group is going to make us better and much deeper. When we go to the bench, you are not going to see a drop in the level of play." The Eagles opened the season with a 2-0 mark, sweeping both games of the Bridgewater Invitiational at the Jopson Soccer Complex. Bridgewater was victorious by a 2-1 score on against Marywood before topping Marymount 3-2.
Football Bridgewater’s offense returns a number of veterans along its front, but replacing a three-year starter behind center and an All-American wide receiver will be a task that the Eagles haven’t faced in some time. On a positive note, veteran leadership should not be an issue for the Eagles with a half-dozen fifthyear seniors returning to the roster for the 2011 season. Question number one looms at arguably the most important offensive position – How to replace a three-year starting quarterback who had a banner year in 2010? Senior Jacob Hutchinson and junior Carlos GonSenior Dominic Jeter returns to anchor down a vetzalez battled for the starting job in preseason camp, eran defensive line in 2011. before Gonzalez won the nod. Last season, Gonzalez took the majority of the snaps on the second team while Hutchinson recovered from offseason surgery. Gonzalez brings a Division I arm to the mix, while Hutchinson brings the wheels to an offense that head coach Michael Clark wants to have a more up-tempo approach this season. The Eagles will turn to a number of options to replace All-American Tyler Beiler and fellow graduate Keenan Tillar at the wide receiver post. Primarily, the Eagles return Leigh Bradley to the mix, after Bradley missed the 2010 season due to a nagging injury that required surgery. Senior Julius Delbridge also returns after becoming an option on the edge in 2010. Delbridge hauled in 15 passes for 173 yards and a score for the Eagles a season ago, and will be looked upon to expand his role in 2011. At the tight end spot, the Eagles return Justin Bingham who started all 10 games last season. Bridgewater’s offensive line will be a major factor for the Eagles as the unit returns nearly everyone from the 2010 season, including ODAC first-team selection, George Sheaffer. The offensive line returns 24 combined starts from the 2010 season. Switching to the defensive side of the ball, the Bridgewater front four will again be a major strength for a defense that was near the top of the ODAC in 2010. The Eagles’ projected defensive front four returns 38 combined starts from the 2010 season and boasts D3Football.com All-Region defensive end Dominic Jeter, 2010 ODAC second teamer Stephen Howard and ODAC honorable mention selection Joel Francis. Along the defensive line, the Eagles will also be under new leadership as former Clemson defensive lineman Etta Tawo takes over the day-to-day coaching duties. In the linebacking corps, the Eagles will see a pair of new faces replacing ODAC first teamer T.J. Montague and conference second teamer Scottie Littles. Senior Chris Wholey is the lone Eagle who returns to the fray in the center of the defense with any game-time experience. Newly appointed linebackers coach Del Smith takes the reins of the group for the upcoming season after the summertime departure of longtime assistant coach Stephon Healey to Gallaudet. The defensive secondary will also see a number of new starters alongside junior free safety Jeff Mehlhaff and senior corner Terrell Corley. Mehlhaff and Corley both recorded two interceptions last season to help lead the Eagles defense to 10 picks on the year. Despite their losses, the Eagles return a salty defensive front, a first team All-ODAC goalkeeper and a group of young and fiery players to the fold providing an outstanding base for the Eagles in 2011. Senior Taylor Waddell will return to the mix for her final season in the crimson and gold and will be the premiere keeper for the Eagles this season. Waddell returns after a nine-win season in which she posted a pair of shutouts and turned in a goals-against-average of under two. Last season, Waddell was named to the All-ODAC first team. Bridgewater’s defense will remain one of the top units in the ODAC after turning in a strong season in 2010. Last season, the Eagles allowed just under two goals per game as a team and turned in 11 defensive saves in the process. Senior defender Megan Bach returns after starting all 18 games a season ago. Bach notched a pair of goals on the year, including in the game winner at home against Limestone, and was the cornerstone of the defense all season. Juniors Jennifer Bateman and Joan Burleson also return after aiding the defense to a strong season in 2011. Last season, Bateman was the third-leading scorer on the Bridgewater offense with four goals, but the junior also notched three defensive saves in the process. Burleson notched four assists and a team-high six defensive saves en route to being named to the All-ODAC second team. Bridgewater’s midfield will be without the services of Kalah Hess for the first time in four years and will have to quickly find a replacement for Hess, who commandeered the Eagles offense and was a four-time All-ODAC selection. Junior Kelly Ryan is expected to step into Hess’ role at the center midfield position and will be in control of the Eagles transition. Ryan started in 14 games a season ago. Bridgewater will have to replace its two leading scorers from a season ago in Kristen Combs and Brianna Jacques, and will look to some new faces to push the scoring front as the season gets underway. Sophomore Galen Goodman returns to the fray after seeing action in 12 of the Eagles 18 games from a season ago. Goodman posted her first career goal at home against St. Vincent. Fellow sophomore Jennifer Tompkins returns after a solid freshman season for the Eagles. Tompkins played in all 18 games a season ago and notched a pair of assists along the way. The Eagles opened their season with an 0-2 mark with losses at Dickinson and 16th-ranked Juniata College.
Men’s Soccer The start of the 2011 men’s soccer season has been a whirlwind for first-year head coach Ryan Bennison. Hired just two weeks prior to the start of practice, Bennison has spent the preseason getting to know his team while installing a new plan of attack for the Eagles for the upcoming season. The Eagles will be a young team in 2011 with just five seniors among the 19 returning players. Improving offensive production will be one area where the Eagles need to improve. The team scored just 14 goals in 17 games a year ago. Ryan Morgan, a junior, led the Eagles in goals scored a year ago with four. Senior Nick Rutten and Sophomore Patrick Thornton returns after playing in all junior Kevin Gorman added two goals each while 17 games a season ago. Gorman led the team in assists with four. The Eagles do have experience in goal where Travis Morris returns for his senior season. Morris finished the season with 95 saves and allowed 2.67 goals per game. Bridgewater opened the season with a 1-2 opening week, with their lone victory coming against perennial power Mary Washington. Women’s Volleyball Bridgewater first-year volleyball head coach Erin Albert has a good mix of veterans and newcomers to lead the way for the Eagles in 2011. The Eagles are looking to bounce back from a 13-17 record in 2010 – the program’s first losing season in a decade. Albert has eight returning players, seven freshmen and one senior playing for the first time on the 2011 roster. “I have a good group of returning players and the new players are meshing well as we try to build the program that we want here at Bridgewater,” Albert said. Leading the way for the Eagles will be senior middle hitter Katie Baker. Baker was a second-team All-ODAC pick in 2010. Baker finished the season with 246 kills and ranked just outside the ODAC’s Top 10 in both total kills and kills per game. Baker could move into the top five on the Bridgewater career kills list by the end of the season. Joining Baker to help lead the Eagles’ net game will be sophomore Katie Long and junior Cadie Castle. Long averaged almost two kills per game in her first season. Castle averaged 1.65 kills per game and was also ranked among the top blockers on the team. All-Conference performer Katie Baker Getting the ball to the hitters will be sophomore setter Lindsay returns to the Eagles squad in 2011. Kallam, one of the top freshmen in the ODAC a year ago. Kallam ranked third in the conference in assists with 8.27 per game. Leading the Eagles on the back row will be junior libero Casey O’Leary and senior Kai-Lynn Stoker. O’Leary has emerged as one of the top liberos in the conference and ranked second in the conference in digs with 4.46 per game. Stoker is also an experienced back row player and averaged 2.72
digs per game a year ago. Juniors Bethany Doman and Mara Hogan also return and give the Eagles quality depth. Both are outside hitters but are also adept at playing the back row. The newcomers will provide the Eagles with depth at every position. Kylie Graham and Lauren Johnson will vie with Kallam for playing time at the setter position. At 5-10, Johnson provides good size at the position. Senior Morgan Foster and first-year players Kat Snead and Emily Cassell will play at the outside hitter spot while 6-1 freshman Megann Grimes will play in the middle. Looking for playing time along the back row will be Ashley Weik and Kellie Finneran. The Eagles will play in five regular season tournaments along with the tough ODAC slate. Bridgewater was picked to finish sixth in the ODAC Coaches’ Preseason Poll. Bridgewater opened the regular season with a flawless 4-0 record at the Battlefield Classic hosted by Gettysburg College. Women’s Cross Country The Bridgewater College women's cross country team returns its top six runners from a year ago and expects to challenge for the top spot in the ODAC this season. The Eagles return three All-ODAC runners, led by junior Olivia Mills. Mills placed second in the conference and then added a sixth-place finish at the regionals to become the first female runner in Eagles history to qualify for the national meet. Mills should have plenty of support with junior Molly Smith and senior Katie Notarangelo returning. Smith earned first-team All-ODAC honors with a seventh-place finish at the conference meet. She also earned all-region honors by placing 35th at the South/Southeast Region meet. Notarangelo capped a solid 2010 season with a 14th-place finish at the ODAC meet to earn second-team all-conference recognition. Samantha Hancock, a junior, and sophomores Stephanie Breen and Rachel Cerrone also return. Hancock placed 17th at the ODAC meet and Breen finished 25th, one spot ahead of Cerrone. This year, we need our top five inside the Top 20." The Eagles opened their season with a runner-up showing at the Hornet Challange in Lynchburg.
Men’s Cross Country The Bridgewater College men's cross country team returns six of its top seven runners from a year ago as it looks to contend for a title in the competitive ODAC. The Eagles will be missing Jake Griffin, the team's top runner in 2010, but the remainder of the roster returns. The Eagles finished fourth at the ODAC Championship meet a year ago with Griffin pacing the team with a 10th-place finish. Bridgewater was picked third in the ODAC preseason poll. Following Griffin, the next six runners finished between 17th and 30th at the ODAC meet and all return this season. Leading the way for the Eagles this season will be seniors Brian Barnett, Paul Johnson and Jordan White along with junior Ryan Speray. Barnett finished 17th at the ODAC meet with Johnson 19th, White 22nd and Speray 30th. A pair of sophomores who cracked the Top 25 in their first year with the Eagles also returns. Abe Rittenhouse placed 21st and Troy Jackson finished 25th at last year's ODAC meet. Colton Berrington, a senior, and juniors Tim Wisniewski and Troy Jackson returns to the mix for the Adam Eakins also return to add experience and depth to the men’s team. roster. Head coach Brian Flynn also added seven freshmen runners to the roster for the upcoming season and expects at least two to run among the team's top seven. "We have some good talent in the freshman class," Flynn said. "Luke Sohl and Tim Miller both should contribute right away." During his time at Marywood, Grant amassed a 41-24 overall record and an outstanding 20-6 mark in Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) and Presidents Athletic Conference (PAC) play. Following the inaugural season for the Pacer men’s lacrosse team, Grant was named the PAC Coach of the Year after leading his team to a 9-5 overall record. The next season, Marywood hit the double-digit wins plateau and finished as the CSAC runner-up. Grant coached 23 All-Conference players during his time at the Scranton, Pennsylvania university and posted four straight postseason appearances in just five years at the helm. Men’s Soccer On August 4 it was announced that Ryan Bennison would succeed Matt O’Toole as the head men’s soccer coach. Bennison takes over the Eagles program after serving three years as the top assistant coach at Anderson University, a member of the Division III Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference. While at Anderson, he helped lead the team into the upper half of the conference standings. The Ravens finished the 2009 season with a thirdplace finish in the conference standings. A year later, the team turned in one of the best seasons in Anderson history with a second-place finish in both the regular season and conference tournament. Bennison recruited the conference freshman of the year in 2009 and 2010.

Women’s Golf On July 11, Bridgewater College announced the hiring of Tarah Miller as the College’s first head coach for women’s golf, a program that will begin play in the fall of 2012. Miller is currently an apprentice in the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) and is expected to receive full membership in the Association this coming November. She is also a certified member of the United States Golf Teachers Federation (USGTF). Miller began her collegiate playing career at Wake Forest University before moving on to Saint Francis University where she played her final three years. While at Saint Francis, she qualified twice for the NCAA Division I Regionals and finished in the top five at the North East Conference (NEC) Championships in each of her three years. She won four collegiate tournaments during her career, was named NEC Golfer of the Week four times and was a Saint Francis Academic-Athletic All-American.

Beiler Signed to Jaguars Practice Squad JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Less than a week after getting released by the San Francisco 49ers, Bridgewater College All-American wide receiver landed across the country on the practice squad for the Jacksonville Jaguars. Beiler was one of seven players signed to head coach Jack Del Rio's practice squad after the team made the final cut to 53 players on Saturday evening. The 2011 D3Football.com South Region Player of the Year joins Mount Union's Cecil Shorts on the Jacksonville squad. Shorts was the fourth-round pick to Jacksonville in April's NFL draft. Following offseason negotiations from the player lockout, the new collective bargaining agreement has a league minimum salary of $5,700 per week for practice squad players. Beiler was named the Division II-III Player of the Year by the Manheim Touchdown Club at its annual banquet earlier in the year after pulling in a laundry list of hardware after a breakout season. He was named to the AP Little All-American team in December, in a compilation of the best players from Division II/III and NAIA. He was also named the winner of the Willie Lanier Award as the state of Virginia's top small college football player. In addition, he was named the state Player of the Year by the Virginia Sports Information Directors and The Roanoke Times. On top of his Virginia awards, Beiler was also named the South Region Player of the Year by D3Football.com and was a first team All-American selection by D3Football.com. Beiler led the nation in all-purpose yards and receiving yards per game, adding to numerous postseason honors.
132 Named to ODAC Academic Team FOREST, Va. – It was a strong year for the Bridgewater Eagles on their respective playing fields, but in the classroom the Eagles also competed at the highest levels, as 132 student-athletes were recognized by the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) for their classroom achievements during the 2010-11 school year. Bridgewater turned in a trio of ODAC Scholar Athletes of the Year, including Chrissy Rhodes who earned the NCAA Elite 88 Award for the second year in a row. On the golf course, May graduate Mike Redwood was named the ODAC Scholar-Athlete of the Year, while also earning Cleveland Golf All-America Scholar honors. Fellow May graduate Lauren Childress was named the ODAC Scholar Athlete of the Year in softball. The Eagles equestrian team hauled in the most student-athletes on the list among Bridgewater honorees with 24. Eligibility for the ODAC All-Academic Team is open to any student-athlete who competes in a conference-sponsored sport, regardless of academic class. He or she must achieve at least a 3.25 grade point average for the year to be considered for an ODAC All-Academic Award.
