Bridgewater Looking To Take Next Step In Program’s Building Process After posting the best season in program history a year ago, the Bridgewater College women’s soccer team will look to take the next step in moving up in the ODAC standings. The Eagles finished the 2009 season with a program best 13 victories and finished 7-4 in the ODAC. Duplicating that number of victories will be a tall task as the Eagles will face the toughest schedule in program history during

the 2010 campaign. The program took a big step forward last year,” Eagles head coach Mike Van Horn said. “We had an all-region player (Megan Groos) for the first time and last year’s team broke nearly all the statistical records. “I see this season as a transition year,” Van Horn continued. “We’re stepping up in competition, playing more national and regional caliber teams.” The Eagles return plenty of talent with seven starters returning along with several other players who received significant playing time. The Eagles are still a young team, however, as five of the returning starters will be sophomores. “Last year’s freshman class made a huge impact,” said Van Horn. “We will still be young, but we now have a lot of game experience.” The Eagles return both goalkeepers – Cari Hensley and Shauna Manovich. The duo split time in the net a year ago and combined for 10 shutouts. “We’re solid at goalkeeper,” said Van Horn. “Both did a good job for us last year.” On defense, the Eagles return three starters along plenty of depth. Morgan Keplinger, Jessica Palmer and Kelly Purcell each started in 2009. “We have experience and depth in the back,” said Van Horn. “That is definitely are deepest position.” The Eagles are not as deep in the midfield, but they do return talent with Abby Dehoff, Caroline Banks and Sarah Taylor returning. “We have three freshmen coming in who should provide us with quality depth at midfield.” The Eagles return plenty of firepower up front with all-region performer Megan Groos leading the attack. Sophomores Brittany Harris and Jacey Kelly also return after receiving significant playing time. Senior Ashley Andes could also join the mix if she is able to return from injury. “All of our forwards have proven they could both score and assist,” Van Horn explained. “We’re deep at the forward spot.” Van Horn also will welcome six freshmen into the fold this season. “The six we are bringing in can play. They will provide competition for our returning players and improve our depth. I

CARI HENSLEY can see some of them earning a starting spot and all six will compete and should see playing time,” said Van Horn Bridgewater’s non-conference slate will be extremely tough. The Eagles open against Stevenson, a team they battled to a 0-0 tie with a year ago. At the Elizabethtown tourney the Eagles will play College of New Jersey, a national semifinalist in 2009 and the tough squad from Elizabethtown. At the Mary Washington tournament the Eagles will a play host Mary Washington, a conference champion a year ago and Emory, an NCAA caliber team. An improving Shenandoah squad rounds out the non-conference schedule. “Winning 13 games against this schedule will be a big challenge,” said Van Horn. “Playing a team like New Jersey will show us how far away we are from playing against national level competition. Hopefully, our non-conference schedule will prepare us for conference play. “Last year we reached a lot of our goals and we bypassed some teams in the conference standings and closed the gap on the top teams in the ODAC,” said Van Horn. “This year we are looking to close that gap even more. We were competitive against the top four teams in the ODAC last year. This year we’re looking to take another stop an knock off one or two of the top teams in the ODAC.”

Mike Van Horn, Head Coach Mike Van Horn begins his third season as head coach of the women’s soccer program at Bridgewater College. In Coach Van Horn’s second season at the helm, he led the Eagles to a recordsetting season. The 2009 squad finished fifth in the nation for most improved program. They also finished in the top 100 in three categories for the first time in program history: most goals scored (50), fewest goals against (61), and overall winning percentage (83). During the 2009 season the team set new program records for most shutouts, assists, goals and wins in a season. They also set a new record for the fewest goals allowed during a season. During each of Van Horn’s seasons, the Eagles have significantly reduced the number of goals allowed. In ’09, the team finished 4th in conference and qualified for the ODAC tournament for the third consecutive year. In Coach Van Horn’s first season, the team posted four shutouts and gave up 16 fewer goals than the previous campaign. Under his direction, the Bridgewater women’s soccer team tied for the seventh seed in the ODAC tournament, qualifying for the tournament for the second

consecutive season. BC has qualified for the ODAC tournament in each of Van Horn’s two seasons. Van Horn brings a wealth of coaching experience from the high school, club and collegiate levels to the Eagles’ program. Van Horn served as the assistant soccer coach/goalkeeper coach for the Bridgewater men’s team. He was responsible for organizing and directing all goalkeeper sessions for the men’s team. He was also involved in many other aspects of the program including the recruiting process. During his three seasons with the team, the Eagles qualified for two ODAC tournaments, including one appearance in the conference semifinals. Van Horn holds a USSF National “A” license as well as a NSCAA National Goalkeeping Diploma. Van Horn also coached the girls’ soccer team at Turner Ashby High School for three seasons and led the Knights to one district championship. From 2003-2005, he served as men’s assistant soccer coach at King’s College in Wilkes Barre, Pa. During his tenure, King’s posted back-to-back, double-digit win seasons for just the second time in college history. Van Horn graduated from Christopher Newport University with a Bachelor of Science degree in exercise science. He earned his Masters of Science in athletic administration from James Madison University. “My goal,” said Van Horn, “is to develop a soccer culture focused on compassion and respect for each aspect of the game and each studentathlete, while progressively raising the standard of the program and maintaining high academic standards. Van Horn lives in Harrisonburg with his wife Molly and son, Ayden.

Jason Capps, Assistant Coach

Brian Turner, Assistant Coach

Jason Capps enters his third season on the Bridgewater College women’s soccer coaching staff as an assistant coach. He will again be involved in all aspects of the program. Capps previously served as a volunteer assistant with the women’s soccer team at Middle Tennessee State University where he was a member of the 2004 Sun Belt Conference Championship coaching staff. He also assisted a local high school team while in Tennessee and coached club teams in Maryland, North Carolina, and Tennessee before returning to his home state of Virginia. Capps is currently the head coach of the girls’ varsity soccer team at Eastern Mennonite High School. In two seasons as head coach of the Flames, Capps has compiled a record of 26-7-1. He ended the 2010 campaign at 14-3-1, dropping only one game all season to a fellow VISAA Division II opponent, a 1-0 loss in the state semi-final match. His tenure has sparked many milestones including maintaining a No. 2 VISAA Division II state ranking each season, posting a 14-2 record in conference play, and winning back-to-back Blue Ridge Conference championships. Capps has led his team to a victory over a higher division rival for the first time in the school’s history and in two seasons has produced the most VISAA All-State girls’ soccer players in EMHS history. Capps received his Bachelor of Arts in English, with a minor in Religious Studies, from MTSU in 2008. He currently holds a USSF National “D” license.

Brian Turner begins his third season on the Eagles coaching staff as an assistant coach. He will again be involved in all aspects of the program. During the 2008 season, the goalkeepers recorded more shutouts and allowed two goals or less in 11 of the team’s 19 games. Improving the team’s goalkeeping helped the team earn a second straight trip to the conference tournament. Prior to joining the Eagles coaching staff, Brian worked with the JMU men’s team as the volunteer assistant. While at JMU he earned his Master’s Degree in Athletic Administration and Coaching. Brian received his Bachelor’s Degree from Mary Washington College in 2000 where he was a four year letter winner with the men’s soccer team. During his career, the team earned two conference titles and two trips to the National Tournament in 1996 and 1997. Turner helped the 1997 team advanced to the National Semifinals and finish third in the nation as the second leading scorer with nine goals and four assists. After graduating from Mary Washington, Brian served as an officer in the United States Marine Corps for four and a half years. He currently resides in Harrisonburg with his wife Jenny and daughter Amelia. Turner holds a USSF National “B” license as well as a NSCAA National Goalkeeping Diploma.

2009 Season In Review

“Witness The Rising” It was a damp, muggy morning when the Bridgewater Eagles women’s soccer team took the field for the start of the 2009 season. Smiles, crazy hair, multicolor socks, and nervous energy abounded. The team motto for the season, “Witness the Rising” was nothing more than a hopeful, yet confident, prelude to the season. The preseason ran its usual course. Veteran players sizing up the youngsters, youngsters giving everything they have to prove themselves, and everyone leaving spent each day, with three-a-days to start camp and a team building, team bonding trip as a reward in the end. But, even during the first team scrimmage on day one, the coaching staff observed a shift in direction for the program. The newcomers weren’t just proving themselves, but holding their own, and the returning players weren’t going to budge, but instead elevate their play. This is what the staff wanted from their first day on campus, a strong competitive fire throughout the program that could change the culture, and this was their foundation to build upon. “We were really proud of the hard work that many of our ladies put in during the offseason,” said head coach, Mike Van Horn. “I know a few girls in particular, for example, even contacted me over the summer to get tips on furthering their workout. So, that, coupled with our first recruiting class, really began to change the culture of the program.” The team survived preseason, enjoyed whitewater rafting, and the regular season began. After a thrilling opening match that ended in a double-overtime draw, against eventual CAC runner-up, Stevenson, the Eagles would then go on a four game winning streak. In the process, the Eagles won their own BC Invitational Tournament for the first time in school history, and without allowing a goal. With an undefeated record, 4-0-1, all 5 shutouts, the Eagles would find their first loss in a very controversial match against Meredith, in Greensboro, NC. This would be the first time the Eagles would be scored against and that wouldn’t happen often, as the team would go on to set a new record for shutouts, 10, breaking the old record of eight. In turn, the number of shutouts contributed to also setting another school record, that of allowing the least goals against at only 17.

The Eagles would respond promptly by defeating their next few opponents, and outscoring the middle section of their schedule 22-4 while going 5-1, 3-1 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference. Perhaps the most exciting moment coming on a gamewinning header served from the foot of midfielder Kathy Bundrick and the head of forward Brittany Harris, with only 12.7 seconds remaining in the rather defensive match at Emory & Henry. It was in this stretch that forward Jacey Kelley would garner ODAC Player of the Week honors for her performances in wins against RandolphMacon and Guilford, amounting three goals, one being the game-winner versus Randolph-Macon. This recordbreaking pace would amount to just that as the Eagles attack would set a new mark for most goals in a season, with 55, and most assists, with 47. As a result of this production, senior Krista Ready would move to fourth alltime in scoring, with 24 goals, and to fourth all-time in points, 51, when adding her 3 career assists. Sophomore forward, Meghan Groos, would climb to fourth all-time in assists with 12, and junior midfielder, Sara Taylor, would claim the third all-time spot on that same list with 13 assists. During the middle of the season, the coaching staff began to notice that the competitive fire from the preseason hadn’t vanished, but was now beginning to be stoked. Continued on next page

2009 Season In Review

Continued from previous page Going into the Virginia Wesleyan game, there was a confidence that had been lacking in the past. A game that in the past would be competitive possibly until halftime was now tight throughout. The Eagles would fall short, 20, in a closer game than the score would indicate, but amongst those two mistakes something more important was found. “I think what contributed greatly to our success this season was the competitive spirit that some players brought into the program,” said assistant coach, Jason Capps. “As coaches we’ve seen a lot, so it’s easier to put forth a game plan and be confident of the possibilities. You don’t always get that reflected back from the players when you’re facing a team your school hasn’t defeated. This year we found that and it was refreshing.” Found it, indeed. The Eagles would next play a team they hadn’t defeated in 5 years, cross-town rival, Eastern Mennonite University. And, after a solid halftime talk, they would take down their rival, 3-1, playing inspired soccer while keeping a promise to each other to end that streak this season. In the end, the Eagles have certainly shed the feathers of the past and are enjoying the new ones that

have them climbing upward. The team earned a seed in the ODAC Tournament for the third consecutive year, with this 2009 season providing Bridgewater their best finish and highest seeding in school history at fourth. The Eagles ended the season with the best record in school history at 13-6-1, the most wins in the history of the program. The Eagles improved their record in the ODAC as well, upgrading from 4-7 to 7-4, thus breaking the old record for ODAC wins which stood at 6. The team also had members honored individually by the ODAC with forward Meghan Groos named to the All-Conference Second Team and defender Kelly Purcell named ODAC Honorable Mention. In the past, a close game with a tough team might have been an anomaly. With tight games against Stevenson, Roanoke, Virginia Wesleyan, and Washington & Lee, that is no longer the case for the Bridgewater Eagles. The Bridgewater College Eagles have not risen like a phoenix from the ashes, but rather ascended to heights never mounted. The sparkle in the eyes of everyone wearing “Witness the Rising” gear early in the season has turned to the hardened, steely gaze of an eagle, with talons sharp, now ready to descend on its prey.

Commissioner Brad Bankston Celebrating its 35th year of operations, the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) is one of the nation’s largest Division III conferences. The 14- member ODAC, including one associate member, stands as the second-largest multi-sport NCAA Division III conference in the country. The league was formed on May 18, 1975 as the Virginia College Conference and began operations in September of 1976. (The name change to Old Dominion Athletic Conference became effective January 1, 1976). Charter members were eight colleges located in the state of Virginia: Bridgewater College, Eastern Mennonite College, Emory & Henry College, Hampden-Sydney College, Lynchburg College, Randolph-Macon College, Roanoke College and Washington and Lee University. From its initial year of operation through the 1981-82 academic year, the ODAC sponsored competition in 10 men’s varsity sports, including football, soccer, and cross country in the fall; basketball, wrestling, and indoor track and field in the winter; and baseball, golf, tennis, and outdoor track and field in the spring. Women’s sports were added prior to the 1982-83 school year. Today, the ODAC has grown to Sponsor championships in 22 sports (10 men and 12 women) and houses nine full-time coeducational institutions with four single-gender schools making up the current 13 full-time members. The conference expanded in the late 1980s, early 1990s and most recently in 1999. Virginia Wesleyan became the 13th member of the conference in 1988 and began full-scale competition in the league in the 1989-90 academic year. Guilford College, voted into the conference in the spring of 1990, began competing for conference championships in the 1991-92 season. The Catholic University of America (DC) was accepted for associate membership in football on January 12, 1999. Over the past 16 years the conference and the City of Salem, Va., have gained national attention through hosting five NCAA Division III championships in football, men’s basketball, softball, baseball, women’s lacrosse, and volleyball. The growing list of titles passed out in Salem began in the fall of 1993 with the DIII Football Championship. Through the 2008-09 academic year, the conference and city have hosted 46 NCAA Division III Championships since the ‘93 Stagg Bowl. This year, the two will serve as hosts to the DIII football and men’s basketball championships.
