The history of Barkers dates back to 1882, when William Barker started his apprenticeship at Oxendale’s Drapers. In 1907, William bought a share of the business, becoming Oxendale & Barker, and eventually bought out Oxendale’s in 1917, becoming Barkers. Today, the store is run by the 5th generation, and this year we are proud to be celebrating our 140 th anniversary.

OUR BEAUTY BUYER KAREN PARKES-HATLEY
Karen has worked at Barkers for 28 years and is one of our team’s longest standing members.
How many years experience have you got working in the Beauty Industry?
I’ve spent over 30 years in the beauty industry. I started in the late 80’s, working with Mary Quant cosmetics, and then went on to work for many leading cosmetic companies before landing the role as ‘Beauty Buyer’ in Barkers in 1996.
What’s your favourite memory of working at Barkers?
In 2011, the Beauty Hall was extended and transformed into a new inspirational look which took many months of planning. I enjoyed working closely with Charles Barker, the designers and the cosmetic companies. I had a huge input with the planning and designing and really enjoyed managing the project alongside Charles, who had some wonderful ideas and a great vision. He wanted to create a modern, spacious and luxurious environment to attract new and existing customers. 11 years later, it is still a beautiful environment and a pleasure to work in.
What’s your go-to Beauty product?
Lancôme’s Absolue Moisture Cream moisturises the skin and helps to diminish fine lines, giving a smoother, younger looking skin. I also love the Clarins Hand & Nail Cream, leaving my hands soft and protecting them against the cold weather.
Describe your ideal night in?
My husband Tony and I do enjoy visiting a variety of nice restaurants, however, I like nothing more than coming home from work to a lovely, home-cooked meal - which he does to restaurant standard.
Any stand out gifts for Christmas this year?

What attracted you to working at Barkers?
My Nana used to bring me and my sister to Barkers as children, and I was always fascinated by the personal service the staff gave. I remember feeling so grown up when we were bought matching handbags & purses one year for a wedding. I guess I was always cut out for a customer service roll having enjoyed waitressing on a weekend when I was still at school.
Any top tips when it comes to choosing new Bed Linen?
Don’t be afraid to make a statement with your duvet design if you have plain walls & floors. Alternatively, you can change the look of your plain dye seasonally by adding bold cushions & throws. Textured finishes & chunky knits are very on trend at present. Finally, remember to measure your mattress depth before buying a fitted sheet.
What’s your perfect day out?
A walk in the countryside followed by a pub lunch.
What inspires you?
Charles Barker was a huge inspiration to me. He taught me to welcome challenges, not be afraid of change, and not to dwell on mistakes but learn from them. This kind manner and willingness to listen to all points of view will always inspire me.
