Mayerling is based on the true story of the deaths of Crown Prince Rudolf and his teenage mistress Mary Vetsera in 1889. This dark and intense ballet was created for The Royal Ballet in 1978 and is regarded by many as among Kenneth MacMillan's finest works. Orchestrated and arranged by John Lanchbery, the music of Franz Liszt sweeps the story to its intense conclusion, and sumptuous designs by Nicholas Georgiadis bring to life the formal, oppressive world of the Austro-Hungarian court.

HERVEY Saturday 27 Oct, 7.30pm Tickets: £15/£12
Hervey tells the story – at once shocking and funny – of the feud between King George II and his son Frederick, Prince of Wales. The Hanoverian Royals were already notorious for their inability to get on with one another, but in 1737 their squabbling reached grotesque new heights. Prince Frederick, determined that his wife should not give birth beneath his parents’ roof, smuggled the poor woman – shrieking, fainting, her waters already broken – out of Hampton Court and back to a deserted St. James’s Palace, where she was finally allowed to finish the job between two tablecloths borrowed from the house next door. The sequel to this unpleasantness saw the Prince banished from court, his father racked by a mid-life crisis, and his mother – the vivacious Queen Caroline – die of mortification. Hervey is based on the memoirs of the King and Queen’s Vice-Chamberlain, Lord Hervey of Ickworth, a waspish and witty aristocrat desperate to make his mark as a statesman but ending up as nothing better than their Majesties’ drudge. The narrative – humorous and pacey – reveals all the nastiness at work among the Royals, as well as the bitter-sweet longings of the man who served them.
Join BAC Director, Curtis, on Thursday 25 October at 7pm in the Allsop Gallery for a talk about the Georgians! £7 a ticket, or free with tickets to Hervey. A Fundraiser for BAC see page 4

Jeremy Hardy is in his 4th decade as a stand-up this year. That’s a more dramatic way of saying he started 34 years ago and, without a lottery win, probably has at least another 34 years to go. In 2014, the tenth series of Jeremy Hardy Speaks to the Nation was broadcast on Radio 4 and more recently his brand-new series Jeremy Hardy Feels It. He is also well known for his appearances on The News Quiz and I’m Sorry I Haven’t a Clue. Indeed, Alan Bennett recently said he likes him “but he’s only on the radio”. However, Jeremy isn’t only on the radio, his television credits include: Jack Dee’s Election Helpdesk (BBC2), QI (BBC1), Mock The Week (BBC2), Grumpy Old Men (BBC1), Back In The Day (BBC2), Not Tonight With John Sergeant (BBC2).

THE DEAD SCRIBBLE ON WALLS
Saturday 13 Oct – Saturday 17 Nov Allsop Gallery 36
Book online www.bridport-arts.com
The Dead Scribble on Walls re-imagines a melancholic shadow cast by the First World War. The work explores a trans-generational connection to a legacy of embodied grief in which the desire to counter the risk of forgetting is mediated through the obligation of the artist to express empathy. This fragile act of expression traces memory and mourning through the writings of William Morris, Edmund Blunden and Ivor Gurney. Throughout, Wilfred Owen’s The eternal reciprocity of tears remains a central theme. The imperative of the practice is to reflect on how narratives of loss may be repositioned and reconfigured in retrieval through painting.
